Unless you see an actual instrument, all sounds are done by mouth. They do do some layering to have a more full sound. They also do character voices so what you hear is them doing that voice. They are phenomenal
Every single song they've done from The Nightmare Before Christmas is amazing, they've got Kidnap the Sandy Claws and What's This, as well as Geoff recently doing Jack's Lament
Geoff's voice (as well as the rest of Voiceplay) in this song (Oogie Boogie) is unique to it, I don't think you can compare it to any other songs. They're all really in character. It's so good! And in This Is Halloween, which was the first full video I watched by VP. Hot vampire + funny premise + amazing run at the end = me seeking out more of their stuff, and shortly thereafter, I was a full-fledged Voiceplaya and was running happily down the rabbit hole!
Taking handsome Geoff and turning him.. ooh la la. This is the vampire of romance dreams. I do wonder if he re did this vampire look for Halloween costume. That vampire does not inspire fear. 😉 So much great music from VoicePlay and Geoff. And repeat listening just gives more time to hear/see the subtleties that are overwhelmed when listening to the whole the first time through.
In “This Is Halloween” we don’t see Layne’s beatboxing as much because the added nose made it hard to move his mouth well. They always record first, audio mix & then send for final mix. They are singing while doing the video, but they are not recording the audio then.
Forgot to add - video day was especially long on this song because of all the ‘make-up breaks’. I think I remember it as 7am to 11pm? That’s a 16hour day!
Just a little sidenote: "Acapella" doesn't necessarily mean "no editing/filters/effects" in post production. That would be a "live" recording. What defines acapella is "no use of instruments, synthesizers or computers to produce the sounds". Only Voice & body (snapping, clapping, stomping, etc) are allowed for creating the sounds. VP (and all other acapella groups, too) use filters like reverb, compressors etc. as well as mixing (cutting frequencies, adapting volumes etc.) and even add multiple layers of some vocals and vocal percussion in post production. Especially for their music videos, they aim for the "perfect audio". That said, you will definitely hear differences when acapella groups perform a song 'live', because there might be some parts or layers missing compared to the recordings, but everything you hear is made by themselves without instruments. Happy Halloween and greetings from Germany! 🎃😃
They do sometimes layer their voices (for example Geoff can be heard in the bass line and in a solo at once) and this is not live, there is post production done. But everything is done with their voices. They are great voice actors- there’s no voice switching😊.
Eli is a professional character voice actor. He did the voice of Santa Claus and a minion in oogie Boogie. I do not know if they had to multi-track some of the recordings for videos here. This was all them and all acapella.
The characters they turn into are from the movie: Nightmare Before Christmas. That is why the characters are not completely realistic, they are based on the characters from the stop motion animation. The transformations are simply amazing. The Arrangements truly make their covers works of art. The bit of fun they have is extra layers to enhance the experience. Love the works they've done. Thanks for reacting to both of these back to back.
They always sound amazing! And they still keep getting better and better! There is some post-production in their studio video, but their live shows are equally awesome! The kid is Layne's nephew. Happy Halloween! 🎃
I came here from your recent (2024) wonderful review of Valhalla Calling. Although that video was an absolute masterpiece in so many ways I still will always come back to Oogie Boogie’s Song. Maybe I’m a sentimentalist as this is one of the first Voiceplay songs I became obsessed with. Geoff’s show stopping performance, his five vocal range, the look and sound of pure unadulterated (child-friendly) gleeful evil he shows at 6:00 “I’m the Ooogie Boogie Man!” just captivate me. The fact that the others were willing to have most of the focus be on Geoff in this video is a testimony of their strength as a group. FYI “Santa” was a neighbor they randomly asked to be in this video. 😆🎅
I love how people react to the C#2 in the end of the first verse. My mans can go 2 octaves lower. Yes, I meant two. He goes one octave lower in the Skyrim theme cover, to C#1, which is already pretty insane, but his lowest recorded fry note that actually sounded like a note was a C#0, which doesn't even exist on a double bass or on a grand piano. And he can go higher than the B4, almost an octave higher. He hit an A5 and said he didn't want to go further so as not to strain his voice too much. Holy crap that guy
So... The last note in "Oogie Boogie Song", the "subterranean", is a subharmonic E1. Geoff reached a B0 in two different videos: "Halo theme" (twice) and "Valhalla calling" (three times). And yes, those high notes are all Geoff. There's a partial LIVE video of Oogie Boogie where you can appreciate how it sounds live, although it's recorded by someone in the audience with a cellphone, so the quality isn't the best, but... 🙂 "This is Halloween" is one of their most enjoyable videos, IMHO. I love it, even if I'm not into Halloween and I never seen the movie. 🙂 See you next time!
You can listen to This Is Halloween dozens of times and still hear something new every time you listen. I just heard something brand new today on another channel - and I've heard this song at least several dozen times! Oogie Boogie's Song was my introduction to both VoicePlay and Geoff, so it holds a special place in my heart - but I think musically, This Is Halloween is what I'd use to introduce someone new to VoicePlay!
It's the same here in Norway, but then there's like... maybe 10% of the population or something, if even that many, who insist on doing so every year anyway, and then the rest of us are just expected to have candy ready to hand out to strangers' kids who come knocking after all, despite not having any kind of relationship to the celebration other than seeing the grocery stores flooded with halloween candy every October... Really annoying, to be honest. Like having other people pushing their beliefs on you, but then it's through kids asking for candy so you're not allowed to get upset either you just look like a nasty grump
@silviak5568 Geoff's son is William. Not sure what relation Robert is. The trick-or-treater is a relation of Layne, I think. Check the description of VP's video for the credits - it will list the kid's name, although not necessarily who he is in relation to the members of VP.
Great reaction! I've not seen the movie either, but I LOVE these two songs from Voiceplay, think 'Oogie Boogie' was the first 'costume' video of theirs I ever saw - Geoff also has some great ones for this time of year - 'The Headless Horseman' is another favourite - heck, I love all of their stuff!
scary thing is that E1 that Geoff hits at the end of Oogie boogie isn't even his lowest note. i swear his vocal range is larger than my life expectancy. 🤣
In some of his solo work, Geoff Castellucci clones himself to create 5 part harmonies. Check out Under the Misty Mountains Cold....among about a dozen others
As an explaination, Halloween has Trick or Treat. Many years ago, the kids would play tricks on people. Best trick was hitting the victim with a cloth sack of flour. As years went by, this changed into the kid demanding a treat, or payment to buy the way out of the trick. As a Viking, you might understand Tribute? Candy evolved to be the treat of choice. In this video, the little Jack demanded the Tribute. They didn't pay up, so they get the trick. Lessons learned here? Don't run out of candy. Don't take goodies from strangers. Or, he will Roofie you all!
I literally found you today and I am watching older videos, so sorry for double reactions. But Voiceplay actually dropped their cover of Thriller yesterday (well Friday it is past midnight). It's done real well! I'm really enjoying your reactions to this, playing one after the other 😂
Friend, the kid is Geoff´s son, I have seen him in those videos on the other channel . They often ask their kids to partake. The kids enjoy it. Ely works as a "voice actor". You can bet all of them helped out at Disney. Elmar from Germany
Ya gotta check out Jack's Lament by Geoff if you enjoyed these two videos from VoicePlay. Halloween is definitely my favorite time of year, not necessarily the whole candy thing, but the theme, the colors, the weather... So VoicePlay and Geoff Castellucci are definitely high up on my favorites of all time.
check out both these guys and the bass gangs "hide and seek" both released with the same guest artist last halloween and they are both epic in very different style with the same song
All sounds are produced without instruments but there are electronic effects and filters. The origin of the sounds is the human voice and mouth making it acapella. All of the percussion you hear is sounds made by a human without any instrument.

They do put effects on in post sometimes.
This is why voiceplay are the kings of Halloween songs. They should be on everyone's holiday playlist
They were played at my daughter's wedding reception which was Halloween based
Every single song they've done from The Nightmare Before Christmas is amazing, they've got Kidnap the Sandy Claws and What's This, as well as Geoff recently doing Jack's Lament
Jack's Lament is AWESOME!!!! You MUST check it out!!!
Kidnap the sandy claws is one of my favourites because of the F#2 subharmonic lol

It's funny you mention Voiceplay covering Thriller here... VP dropped it this year and you NEED to see it ASAP!
You can listen to This Is Halloween dozens of times and still hear something new every time you listen. I just heard something brand new today on another channel - and I've heard this song at least several dozen times!

Yo, you're out here lookin' like Bray Wyatt at 4:05 with that grin and all. I love it. (RIP Bray) Good stuff all around, my guy.
These are the songs that introduced me to VoicePlay...and I've never regretted it for a second.
The Tricker-Treater is Layne's nephew.
🎃 - we also don't celebrate Halloween, but always happy to watch Voiceplay make it fun! Thanks 🔥

A fine set of pumpkins you have back there. He can go even higher. Lock, Shock and Barrel.
Thanks for the double reaction, that was a nice birthday surprise for me 😀
This is my favourite Voiceplay cover. I love your reactions, keep them coming.
Love the costume, love the reaction. Glad you enjoyed the theatrics 🎃
And a blessed Samhain to you, Sir!
Hello ,fantastic reaction . haha love the look btw 😈❤🤘
There was a Robert Castellucci in the list, so I guess the boy was Geoff's son. So epic, both songs and reactions - love it!

Great Reaction to a phenomenal Acapella Group.
Dan Vasc just dropped a new video and it's epic.
Blessed Samhain to you. And thank you for your reactions to two of my faves.

They also do what's this from the movie. Nightmare before christmas is my absolute favorite. 💯
scary thing is that E1 that Geoff hits at the end of Oogie boogie isn't even his lowest note. i swear his vocal range is larger than my life expectancy. 🤣
I hope that is not entirely true ;)
@@VikingReacts Na its just the twisted humor of a chef 😅
Ah yeah, been there… done that. I can attest to the dark humor of chefs :p
Really fun reaction.
In some of his solo work, Geoff Castellucci clones himself to create 5 part harmonies. Check out Under the Misty Mountains Cold....among about a dozen others
I see fire is a great example of that and his range, its misty mountains "sequel" too :)

Geoff has a laugh in their “Enemy” video that reminds me of Vincent Price from “Thriller.”
Hij maakt echt alle geluiden zelf, net als Adam Rupp van Home Free Groeten uit Eindhoven.
"That laugh was pure evil"
oh no no no this mans lacks critical information... you should definitely check out the "Enemy" cover for a better laugh
I love me some Voice Play!!
Love your reactions!
I literally found you today and I am watching older videos, so sorry for double reactions. But Voiceplay actually dropped their cover of Thriller yesterday (well Friday it is past midnight). It's done real well! I'm really enjoying your reactions to this, playing one after the other 😂

Awesome reaction Viking,
Thank you :)
Your the best dude
Layne swallowed a drum set. 99% is just his face.
Also check out Marwan Ayman's "this is halloween in 30 styles" that he has just released... fully acapella... its genius and hilarious
OMG I LIVE IN THE NETHERLANDS TOO. and we do celebrate halloween.
2024 This year, you might want to do Geoff Castelluci 's JACK'S LAMENT for Halloween. It is awesome.
Pain and Panic are Hades' henchmen in the disney version of Hercules
I think you would love The Phantom Of The Opera by VoicePlay
Geoff Castellucci has a five octave range. You hear it from top to bottom in the last part of the song.
Very festive!
check out both these guys and the bass gangs "hide and seek" both released with the same guest artist last halloween and they are both epic in very different style with the same song
Try high and dry by geoff to see his range
All sounds are produced without instruments but there are electronic effects and filters. The origin of the sounds is the human voice and mouth making it acapella. All of the percussion you hear is sounds made by a human without any instrument.
Not sure if you have been requested to react to the group known as The Bass Gang but I think that you would like some of their songs
If you like this video, you should react to their version of The Hall of the Mountain King
If ytou like a good evil laugh, permit me to recommend their cover of Enemy.
❤😊❤
I prefer Tommy's version . This version feel like i'm in Hawaii. Too relax , haiyaa!
You have to check out their cover of the classic In The Hall Of The Mountain King. It is absolutely wild!
