  • While Aang was struggling to come to terms with his role in ending the 100 Years War and the implications of his final battle against Firelord Ozai - he called upon his prior Avatar incarnations for help. Avatar Roku, Avatar Kyoshi, Avatar Kuruk, and Avatar Yangchen didn't exacty tell Aang what he wanted to hear, but their sage wisdom was still impactful in helping Aang shape his own path and ultimately deciding to take away Ozai's bending.

There is a word for what aang is trying to achieve and killing the firelord was in the way of that goal, that word is called moksha but there is a contradiction here. Aang is the avatar and he is supposed to reincarnate into the next element in the elemental cycle but achieving moksha would mean being free from reincarnation, if aang achieved moksha, that would be the end of the avatar cycle, this is why yangchen says "but the avatar can never do it, your sole duty is to the world.".

@@cordisdie8109 Yeah. She was basically saying "The Air Nomad's teachings don't apply to you, because you are the Avatar." Which is true. Yes, the avatar reincarnates into one of the four nations, but they mustn't focus solely on their own nation or teachings. This also comes into play during the original confrontation between Roku and Sozen, when Sozen states he is Roku's fire lord and he must be beholden to him, but Roku is the Avatar, thus he is beholden to no nation, but the entire world.

Yangchen's advice shows such a deep understanding of Buddhist/Taoist traditions, which often emphasize that enlightenment, while an admirable spiritual goal, shouldn't be one's only or primary goal in life. In fact, Lao Tzi consistently emphasizes that obsessing over spiritual pursuits or trying too hard to achieve enlightenment is the most surefire path to ruin. The Avatar is the embodiment of doing-by-not-doing. A living contradiction, who achieves great wisdom as a result of NOT actively seeking it, because their role requires them to not waste time on vain sophistry, but instead go actively embody ideals of balance and justice.

If countries can sort out their differences in a peaceable manner, then interference is not required. He probably still traveled the world ensuring people are fed, and are safe, but considering there likely wasn't a world shattering conflict such as during Aang's or Korra's reincarnation I would say high level interference likely wasn't required. Yangchen and Kuruk are such interesting Avatars. From what I remember, Yangchen was so revered because Kuruk had to clean up the messes she left behind. She kept the peace between the nations, but failed to keep the spirit world in check. Which resulted in powerful dark spirits being unleashed. Kuruk had to deal with these spirits, and on top of that lost his lover to Koh. Citizens disliked Kuruk’s incarnation because he wasn’t active in the politics of the world. But as he said, his era was relatively peaceful. If he could let the nations work out their conflicts, there’s no need for him to get involved. Unfortunately his battles with the spirits took its toll and he lost his life at a very early age when he should have been in his physical prime as an Avatar.
On the flip side you had Kiyoshi who blamed Kuruk for her problems because he didn’t keep the peace between the nations. Her era was filled with conflict because of it. But she likely never realized she didn’t have to deal with powerful spirits because of him. Being the Avatar is basically a double edged sword. It’s either dealing with spirits, or keeping the peace between the nations.
It’s so funny to me how each Avatar usually just leaves problems behind for the next incarnation. It makes me wonder how the new Earth Avatar is going to deal with Korra leaving the spirit portals open. He might have to deal with powerful spirits the same way Kuruk did.

They seem to be metaphysically trapped in the physical world and whatever avatar is currently alive. Whatever experiences they accumulate just get added on to the next avatar for them to use as some sort of encyclopedia.

Isn't that kinda what detachment and Buddhist enlightenment is all about ironically?
In a way, Yangchen was guiding him towards a better understanding of enlightenment than his young understanding of it. That one is more enlightened and objectively aware of things when they are willing to empty themselves and be beyond just their personal wants.
It's in being beyond yourself that brings one to enlightenment if I understand correctly, it is not quite a personal desire in itself like his desire to keep his pacifist code.

Aang’s character suffers for getting the lion-turtle copout, imo. His character arc is about accepting the responsibility to solve problems only he can, but at the story’s climax he is gifted a way to bypass a dilemma that cuts to the core of his beliefs and character. The fact that the writers allow Aang to keep his hands clean in a war story doesn’t help.

I know that this is a kid's show, but personally I think Aang should've just ended the Fire Lord. It was selfish for Aang to prioritize his own principles over the safety of the world. As Roku said, the current war was a result of his leniency towards Sozin. If Aang didn't discover the method to take away Ozai's bending away, he could've put the world at jeopardy. It would've been a 2 Avatar-long conflict due to a lack of decisiveness.

What is very Mature about this segment is how Aang, young as he was, and with a Huge burden on his shoulders, was having to face the reality that he had to be more selfless than he ever had before (which was at odds with how we first met him, the boy in the ice who ran away from his duties).
Each of them told him how their choices or preferences or teachings or culture had to take a back seat to what the world needed, and that when they didn't, others would suffer.
When Roku failed to, he allowed the war to begin in earnest, especially since he knew the foundations for it had been slowly put in place.
Kuruk apparently didn't have much to worry about or get involved in, so beyond his learning to bend all the elements out of obligation instead of necessity, he mostly did what he wanted, enjoyed the sights, and chilled.
But the spiritual side of things, for someone enjoying the physical, is what caused him to overlook that the Dark is an ever present threat, and he still made enemies that willingly targeted those he cared for.
And finally we have Aang. He unfortunately inherited the war that Roku failed to put out, and for all that he was raised as a monk, he was far too attached to the worldly pleasures of fun and friends, and ran from his duties, and the world and so many people subsequently suffered extensively for another century on top of the decade prior.
Aang didn't want to accept the harsh truth of Yangchen's wisdom, even if she understood his hesitancy and monk background the most, and it's only thanks to eleventh hour luck that he managed to receive the knowledge of suppressing/removing bending (not to mention reactivating his avatar state) that allowed him to win on his own terms.
Its a failing of his, but it kept him flawed and human, and i can appreciate that.

Let's be NOT real, Aang leaving the air temple was the worst thing to EVER happen to him if he stayed, he would have gotten EASILY killed just like everyone else in the air temples. It's Roku's failures that allowed Sozin to start his war and Aang had to unfortunately he was far too young to deal with any of that at the time so no one can blame a child for running away from his duties but it was for the best as he would have gotten killed if he didn't. The whole story of Avatar is Aang doesn't fix up Roku's mistakes but Aang going to a NOT A whole different period, a hundred years later was really the best thing for him because he could do anything at the time.

Aang took all of their advice but in a way that they wouldn’t have. He was decisive by choosing an alternative to killing Ozai (taking his bending), he was just by forcing Ozai to suffer his worst fear (being powerless) just as Ozai and his forefathers made the world suffer, he actively shaped his own destiny and the destiny of the world by sticking to his guns and still winning and introducing a new, non violent solution to the world, and he was selfless and dedicated to his duty to the world by recognizing that he could have died if it went sideways but recognized that putting himself at risk was what needed to be done to protect and save the world.
