  • In today’s episode (100th!!!) we are joined by co-host Claudia Belliveau and guest Dr. Bruce D Perry.
Here’s what we talked about in this episode:
-How the brain is organized i.e. a layered cake
-How to deal with after school - the sequence of engagement
-How humans communicate: repair and rupture
-How do we stop the cycle
-How can we change the health system and classroom based on how the brain works
-What parents need to know about being a parent: how useful are parent handbooks
-Humans were not meant to live in the world the way it is, and neither were parents
-How are single parents supposed to be successful? The caregiving challenge tool
-If the research is so clear, why is the system still broken?
-Why did Cindy and Claudia get into this line of work?
-Are child psychiatrists really doing the best job they can do?
-What can a parent do if they experienced childhood adversity themselves? Are they a lost cause?
-Is my child’s development at risk if home life is heated?
-How can we help our children build resilience?
-What is Dr. Perry’s #1 tip for parents?

Thank you Bruce!!🙏🏼😃 I also love Curious Neuron, and I really get the excitement around having Bruce come in and join you. 🤩 Thank you all, for all of your work. It’s such a precious gift for me, my child and so many others, to be able to learn so much from such brilliant people like you! It’s way past my bedtime. I just had to hear this episode through. (Bruce competing with Bruce, as I also wanted to read “What happened to you?” which
is sitting on my nightstand this very moment.😂).

I have a question. Dr Bruce says that children that experience trauma early on then go to a safer more stable environment don't get the benefit and still have the problems, even when a lot of love and support is given. How can adoptive parents help their children? Is there hope to help them out of the instability and destructive behaviour? I personally thought once the traumatised child is put in a loving environment they will heal and do well.

Just finished listening to this episode. The conversation is incredibly informational and accurate. As an elementary school teacher, I was totally able to relate to the part where Dr. Perry and Hovington's discuss "wanting the system to change, but getting sucked into implementing practices that go against your philosophy." It is always a pleasure to listen to Curious Neuron - topics and discussions leave you reflecting on yourself as a parent/teacher/educator.

Bruce Perry is a great doctor who understands human beings. Also, the word resilience is often used by white people to mask and avoid confronting trauma and the reality of our environments. Yes, im white. Thanks for the episode!
