    Toddlers and teens seem to both be a big transformative phase where this is super helpful. There seems to be less tolerance for teens/preteens needing that guidance where we automatically go into power struggle seeing an adult instead of a child who needs that same guidance

    The narcissist does not know thyself. They know only the lower self. This is evil. They cannot relate to the higher self, the Spirit. The soul. They lack feelings of regret, remorse, empathy, sympathy. Things that make us connect as humans here on the earth.

    Dysregulation is a new term to me. I used to take a park and ride bus home on the freeway for a 20 minute ride or so, then a 5 minute drive home. The bus engine would roar at the high speed, but it didn't really bother me. However, when I would get into the house, if the TV was on, it would sound like it was blaringly loud to me. I always had to turn it down. It made my nerves raw. After a while, I always needed it turned back up again, but I always wondered what it was that made it seem so overwhelming initially.

    I never had kids myself, but I have this memory of sitting in a waiting room at a doctor's office alone. A mom and her toddler came in. She brought over a laundry basket they had in the waiting room that was full of toys. I sat and watched the two of them. She pulled out a toy and handed it to her son on the floor. He very slowly and carefully began to explore the toy and play with it. What I began to notice is she couldn't leave a happy child alone. She started to try to hand him another toy, but he was busy with the first one. So she got short tempered and insisted he take the next toy. This kept playing out with each next toy. I said nothing, but I was absolutely dying to say to her, "Someday you'll be bringing him back here complaining that he has attention deficit disorder." I think in our society we mistakenly believe that a child is developmentally slow when they are actually focused and intelligent. Remember when using flash cards with babies was all the rage for developing their intelligence? Have you ever read Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut?

    I have a question. Dr Bruce says that children that experience trauma early on then go to a safer more stable environment don't get the benefit and still have the problems, even when a lot of love and support is given. How can adoptive parents help their children? Is there hope to help them out of the instability and destructive behaviour? I personally thought once the traumatised child is put in a loving environment they will heal and do well.

As an elementary school teacher, I was totally able to relate to the part where Dr. Perry and Hovington's discuss "wanting the system to change, but getting sucked into implementing practices that go against your philosophy." It is always a pleasure to listen to Curious Neuron - topics and discussions leave you reflecting on yourself as a parent/teacher/educator.

    Any advice for how to gently prepare a toddler (currently 14 months will be closer to 16/17 months when in care) for sleeping without being nursed to sleep? Currently I am the only person able to get my child to sleep at any time except when she is in the car. We currently cosleep and feed to sleep.

    • @CindyHovington
      @CindyHovington Год назад

      That's a great question! I would say to start by making some changes to your night routine. If you read a book before nursing, read 2 or do something after you read the book (perhaps play some calming music or a meditation/calming audio from my app called Wondergrade). I used to play with a flashlight with my child in the dark and create shadows on the wall. They would love it and get sleepy (eventually). This way you are allowing them to fall asleep while still connecting with you (if this works for you!). Hope this was helpful!

This Cyprus story is so close to my imagination. 🎉😂. Yes it is on the track to the right way to run a prison, I would say. I was looking for more information about it and found your podcast. Also very interested in your subject, as true criminal justice will address the issues you are talking about. Intimate connection between Cyprus prison and your focus. ❤. Very helpful.

    Thank you so much for this. My husband and I started the adoption process. We work for a governmental organization in New York City. We found out that since we both work for the same organization, we are only allowed three weeks of parental leave. If it was just one of us, it would be six weeks. We both work in mental health and we know full well that is not enough time to bond with your baby. This was such an informative, inclusive conversation and seeing it approached through gender dynamics, mental health and parental leave in different countries is not something I have seen promoted a lot. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you! Looking forward for more of this and more action on the political level.
