Micah joined the gang and their luck turned sour by chance. Then, as their luck continued to rot, Micah put the nail in the coffin by turning informant for the law. Micah also sewed seeds of doubt in Dutch and fed into his maniacal tendencies that had been kept at bay by Hosea and fanned at by Arthur. Dutch began to care less about the weaker gang members and even those who were strong if they were in disadvantageous spots. Micah is the ultimate bad guy in this story, but the gang's unwavering loyalty to Dutch cost them everything. They treated Dutch like a demigod when really he was declining into a madman.

Then he hit his head (this is probably meaningful, otherwise it wouldn't have happened) then Hosea died.... meanwhile Micah used the situation to himself. That is how he totally went crazy. This line sums up the whole plot of Dutch’s change. During the first keiren mission John says that Dutch is far different from the o’drisscols (sorry for bad spelling) because all the o’drisscols try to do is survive. From gruarma onDutch only wants to survive, making him no better than the o’drisscols, leading to the downfall of the gang...

I feel like the one true moment when Arthur could no longer deny/excuse Dutch's actions was leaving him (an ill man, Dutch's son figure and more than that, the man who had been loyal to him from childhood) to die with a knife inches away from his chest. With all my personal doubts mounting, seeing Dutch grow shallower and shallower, that was the final nail in the coffin. It's a confirmation of what's obvious, but you still want to run from everything until you finally have to accept that every time you turned the other cheek in the past, you risked the end for yourself. Still doing it only brings higher and higher chances of such.
After losing so many family members, along with his main father figure, Arthur watched the man he was most loyal to walk away while his life was in danger. Arthur wouldn't have hesitated for a split second if the roles were reversed, and he was already a dying man. Dutch had no physical weaknesses (the concussion, maybe, but he acted pretty stoic through everything after a day's rest, certainly enough to physically fight). Immediately afterward, it must've sunk in that not only had he lost the man he thought Dutch was, it was because of Dutch that he lost everyone else. Arthur died after watching his family, purpose (loyalty), and everything he held dear in life fall away, running from the man that was supposed to protect him. The only comfort he had was that John would likely make it (it's unclear, but I would hope he'd remember and cling to the hope of the others who fled making it, as many of them indeed did and lived fulfilling lives), and the sunrise depending on how one played.
To think, Dutch raised Arthur. Dutch said to his face (paraphrased) "I would say you're a son to me, but you're more than that." This same man... walked away while Arthur was being killed, got Arthur's family killed (many in front of the man's own eyes), and didn't so much as pat him on the back while he died.

I feel like as the game progressed it revealed the real Dutch. Some people say that he changed and used to be good but I agree with John that Dutch showed his true self in the game. He loves killing and causing chaos. And he loves to feed his ego. He’s got the most beautiful horse in the gang, dresses very lavishly, and is always finding excuses to make money. Like how after the valentine bank robbery he still asked for more money and how he left behind that gold bar after he killed that old lady in guarma. And he chose to side with Micah who kept telling him what he wanted to hear over two guys who he considered his sons and were telling him what he needed to hear. And he was getting jealous of Arthur because Arthur proves to be a better leader and was taking things in his own hands more by chapter 6. Half the muscles (John, Charles and Sadie) sided with Arthur over Dutch. Only when he saw that he was betrayed and that his gang members were leaving him, he became broken and didn’t care at all about anything. Hence why his looks and actions in the epilogue and in rdr1.

I don’t think Dutch went crazy. Like Arthur speculated, he is showing who he truly is. An Iago caught up in his own lies and inability to spite his ego. Hell he doesn’t even show love for either of his “sons” in chapter six and throughout the game he ignores his “lover” Molly. He doesn’t actually admit to loving his former lover and he doesn’t have remorse for his actions. Dutch can charm but he can’t love and the people he did “love” fell under the materialistic possession of those people.

I've long said Dutch was the true antagonist in RDR2 (and RDR1). Micah was a rat bastard, yes, but it was Dutch who made the final call, Dutch who turned his back on Arthur all because Micah lavished praise on him (Dutch has a narcissistic personality), Dutch who got half the gang killed for his stupid plots and plans, Dutch who used Eagle Flies and the other braves as pawns for his own gain... the man is a true villain. What makes it even worse is we can see how charismatic he is, and how he traps his followers with that charisma. I'm not even sure he killed Micah at the end to avenge Arthur so much as avenge his own ego.

    • @RD1456-j8j

Put yourself in his place.. Dutch raised John Arthur, helped them, and saved their lives more than once, along with most of the gang members, until he ended up betraying him.. and Dutch did not know who the traitor was. Arthur is the person who disagrees with him the most at the end of the story. For this reason, he suspects that he is the traitor, but at the end of the game he recognizes the traitor and takes revenge on Micah.
