Hey Brian! Thanks for the video. This covered pretty much the question I had a couple weeks ago on pad choice for my BMW 428i Grande Coupe. I did purchase the micro fiber blend and the orange pad from LC...I also purchased the black pad as well from LC for my sealant(PowerLock)...but I’m having seconds on that because I really like the Angel-wax T22 🤦🏽♂️🤓
As always Mr. Brian, Fantastic information. Can't wait until you actually put your polish on a brick, I know you don't want to show off though! Can't wait to try everything you've taught me. Knee replacement very soon.
I use similar lights and also have some warmer LEDs shining down. My eyesight isn't great and alternating between the two allows more defects to be seen by an old man. It's an excellent series, Brian.
Hey Brian first let me say Thank You so much for your dedication to putting out high quality very informative videos. I’m curious as to the brand of stool you use while polishing
Just bought a brand new RAV4 and it’s full of swirls. So I am debating if I want to put a ceramic coating or not. I love to work on it. So my guess is that I won’t put a ceramic coating like Brian does because he likes to work on his vehicles.
You know why I thumbs up before even watching? Because you're a down to earth, and cool. Like Jon from Forensic. Thank you, Brian. P.S. Just saw you were using 3D One again! I love that stuff too. I'm going to pick up the 3D ACA 500, and 520 because they both feature the alpha ceramic alumina abrasives. I figure that I like One enough to look into it.
Wondered if you have tried the Rupes Coarse/Medium Wool Polishing Pads ? I bought them in a 12 pack, six of each. I just had a big job on a 22 foot enclosed car carrier, with a very hard yet thin enamel white paint that had 188 feet of tree branch scratches. They did a very effective job of removing the scratches in 2 passes. I used the Rupes Mille for the whole job.
The Astro Pneumatic 50SL is a great light also! It is similar to the Scangrip ColorMatch hand held rechargeable light for less than half the price. I have a couple vids about the 50SL on my channel if you want to check it out. I am going to check out those Husky's!
This information on pad selection for different types of clear coats is invaluable. Without years of experience this is a very time consuming process. I find myself often testing multiple combinations of pads and compounds before starting a paint correction. This testing takes a couple hours for a multi-step correction. This often leads me to add an extra day when quoting a time to a customer. I have lost jobs because I’m slow and don’t like to rush! Looking forward to guidance on clear coats from different auto manufacturers. Thanks for all you do to help educate those of us new to the business.
Great video, thank you very much for sharing knowledge and experience positively. Would you assess the hardness of this Mercedes similar to a BMW alpine white? I’ve been struggling to find the seeet spot with that rock-hard coating
Hey Brian, just to follow up, in case it is useful to anyone, on the BMW alpine white, the cutting microfiber disc (Meguiars), Sonax Cutmax and Rupes LHR 15 did the trick for me. 4 passes, the first 2 very slow motion (1 inch/sec) in a criss-cross pattern, moderate pressure, speed 4; the last 2 passes at speed 5, 2 inches/sec with no pressure). Finishing just to deal with a bit of haze with sonax perfect finish, 2 pases with rupes yellow pad. It is a jewel now. Thanks for all the knowledge you share!
I have Mercedes Sprinter Vans.... I was told that it has (soft) single stage paint. It gets fine scratches really easy..... the van is dark grey in color. What process (chemicals and pads) would you use? I was going to buy a Rupe Bigfoot 15 or 21 to maintain my vans..... What are your thoughts? I really enjoy your channel! Thanks for the hard work!
Have you ever do a Q60 black it's a 2014 I got 3 scratchs what pad coumpound polish and pads should I get money's no issue n the scratches don't catch with finger nail thanks
I'm digging this new series! Do you have a resource that explains what hardness clears are from certain manufacturers? I've picked up on generalizations but I'd love to know if there is a chart or some data showing clear hardness vs manufacturer vs production years.
Question, How do you know how hard the clearcoat is by make of car? Is there s place to look that info up? Thanks Brian for your videos and explaining what you are doing.
I love audi paint (atleast on my past '13 A4), it was very easy to remove light marring by the dealer. Merc paint I thought was typically hard but Brilliant Blue metallic is very soft and I have had hard time getting it right. Any suggestions compound/polish/pad combo with flex 3401?
When just removing one scratch do you ever have concerns that the section you polished will look different than the rest of the car. How do you handle that scenario without polishing the whole vehicle?
For a weekend warrior, who does very light paint correction once a year, what Husky light setup would you use? I could see your setup coming out of storage only once a year. I typically do a wax/sealant type application every 3-4 months, and very light paint protection once a year on both my vehicles.
They have smaller set ups as well...such as this...www.walmart.com/ip/Husky-1-500-Lumen-Rechargeable-LED-Worklight-Work-Light-K40067/733671468?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=6562&adid=22222222222144475113&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=e&wl1=o&wl2=c&wl3=75179174912868&wl4=pla-4578778745202206:aud-807615483&wl5=&wl6=&wl7=&%20wl10=Walmart&wl12=733671468_10000006672&wl14=husky%20shop%20lighting&veh=sem&msclkid=8599d43f2166156801178fe562b96b74
Brian, I've got a question/problem. My cars are in very good condition with exception of light swirl marks from hand washing and winter machine car washes. I used a suggestion from Scott Bly (Dallas Auto Detailing) and I'm using Meguiar's D300 with a light compound orange Lake Country CCS foam pad with a Harbor Freight DA polisher on speed 4-5 out of 6 max. This problem is on both my 2012 black Acura TL and my 2001 Speedway white Vette. Yesterday I washed, clayed, decontaminated, and cleaned with Duplicolor Grease and Wax Remover to remove clay residue. I followed the directions for D300 and the paint looked so smooth and glossy in my garage. Followed up on the Acura with more Duplicolor, two coats of Jescar Color Lock Carnauba Wax and Meguiar's Fast Finish. Then I parked it out in the sun and swirl marks were horrible! The paint is smooth as silk and glossy but the swirl marks are killing me. Today, I did the same prep work on the Vette. After pulling it out in the sun and before waxing, I have the same issue with it. All the swirl marks are still there yet the paint is smooth and glossy. Before polishing, I need to know what I am doing wrong and I've got to get rid of the swirl marks. The paint has light swirl marks and nothing is through the clear coat. Is my arm speed too fast? Too much or too little pressure on the polisher? Using the wrong products for my paint? I've watched Scott's, Luke Wilson and your videos at length to get up the courage to try a DA polisher and all I have is a mess on my hands. Your thoughts or guidance would be appreciated very much. Thank you for the videos and all the help.
I ran threw some internets as I do not use D300 at work. Some people were mentioning swirls after use (maybe itll finish better with a microfiber cutting disc?). I'd follow up with M205, Sonax Perfect Finish, Jescar Finishing Polish. Those are my go to polishes I have at work and personally. Final choice is yours obviously. If you have watched videos from some of the best on RUclips I doubt it was your speed or anything like that, it just seems like the paintwork needs refined to finish out.
You're either not going aggressive enough to level existing scratches and only jeweleing the top layer of clear coat or somehow introducing new scratches. Use a good spot light and clear away spent polish as you go to check your work. Try a different compound or polish. HD Cut+ for step 1 and Sonax Perfect Finish for step 2 might work better. Also make sure you're polishing with a less aggressive pad for finishing and cleaning out the pad frequently for all steps. Finally, make sure you're not marring the paint as you wipe the spent polish away (this is more of issue on ultra soft finicky clear coats). Use an edgeless decent quality medium pile microfiber.
These guys have some great tips here. On the acura... use a white foam polish pad and Perfect Finish or Angelwax Perfect polish. Quality edgeless quality microfiber to remove residue. It is difficult to assess without the vehicle in front of me, but do not get aggressive as you have already removed a decent amount of precious clear. Tread lightly from here out.🙂
@@apexdetail85 Thanks so much for the quick reply. I have some M205 and white polishing Lake Country CCS pads. I'm wondering if I could use it rather than ordering Perfect Finish or Angelwax Perfect to save time and money. I thought I was doing everything right, but this has left me doubting my ability to use a DA polisher on either car!
I am starting to use just wool pads injected with foam. Lake Country (thin/thick) purple wool pads. Much more forgiving panel temps and they finish down great. Can be used with hard and soft clear coats. I use a Rupes Mille for cutting and a 15mm Maxshine DA for finishing. I use black foam pads to finish, SDO or HDO is my choice. I Also use a Adam's 3 inch swirl killer for tight spots.
Brian, great video as usual. You should check out Andy Ward’s technique on paint correction very interesting. Specifically check out Matt’s (obsessed garage) video series on sanding this is where you can really see Andy’s technique and why he does it

Hi Brian, I was wondering if you can help point me in the right direction with pads and compounds. I am working on a truck I painted with bc/cc and have to wet sand the orange peel, what pads/compounds would you recommend to get out 1500-2000 grit sandpaper scratch's thanks in advance!!! ~Bryan~
Does microfiber are stronger than pre washed lambswool? Even when the medium foam is higher in temperature you are removing more clearcoat with the pre washed labswool?
You seem to use the eurofiber pads quite a bit or is it just me? BTW great videos bud keep the coming~! Just realized you are just on the other side of the Reading from me. Do you ever prime the foam pads with anything? What do you suggest for Toyota?
