Thanks a bunch. I got an inexpensive tool and wasn't thrilled. Figured that after it dulls, I'd try my x-acto blade, but the serrated knives will be much better.
You're most welcome Libby. I am so thrilled that you found this video helpful. Thank you so much for your positive and encouraging feedback. It means a lot.
how about distress the paper with knife etc b4 dyeing? Thinking the coffee / tea will absorb darker around the edges? Not sure, I will give that a try … OR spray more 'brew' onto the edges if the papers are already dyed?
Yep. Distressing the paper beforehand will spread the coloring out differently. It seeps into the exposed rips and inner fibers, and settles into creases differently. That’s my preferred method (whether with paper or costumes/props), but it’s a variation in your tool kit. Different tools and order of steps produce different effects, so find which one matches the backstory of your project the best.
Hi Sara. Sorry for my slow reply. I am not often signed into RUclips due to my circumstances. Thanks for your question. The paper weight is approx 180gsm, sorry I do not know what it is in pounds. Actually I have made a new recorded tutorial...coming soon on how to distress lighter weight paper...Thanks so much for watching.
Thank you so much for your kind comment. You make a valid point. In fact, thanks to your prompting, I went ahead a few months later in 2022 and made a tutorial to show how I age and distress paper, not cardboard nor cardstock but paper. The one used in the updated tutorial that I recorded in 2022 is 80gsm paper weight. I apologise for the slow reply. I have only just now, had a chance to edit that 2022 video and also to let you know that tutorial is now available, uploaded about half hour ago today. It is called...Part 1 Tutorial: Distressing & inking multiple papers at one time for junk journals & old letters. I actually mention you in the video, I apologise if I pronounce your name incorrectly or got it wrong, but I wanted to give you credit to address the point you made. I also hope this addresses what you were looking for regarding distressing paper. Thanks again for making it happen. Have a great day.
guys i recommend not doing the fire method since i almost burned my entire paper. be very careful when doing so and definitely have water nearby. if i didnt have water paper probably wouldnt be the only thing that wouldve burned
That must have been really scary for you and I agree, you would need to be very careful and have water nearby. I have in the past used the fire method to distress the edge of papers. I made sure it was done next to a sink with a running tap. However, for a long time now, I prefer the method (the fire-free method) I have shared in this tutorial. One needs to be careful when distressing with a cutlery knife or jagged ruler but it is a lot safer than using a lighter or candle on so many levels for sure. Thanks for watching.
Your paper was obviously aged before you started working on the edges yet your video doesn’t comment on how you did this. Can you enlighten me on how you aged your paper before you started in on the edges please?
Hi there, Karen. Thanks for watching and for your question. it is amazing how much one misses when recording a tutorial...I use to be good at multi-tasking but that is no longer my strength. Some of the papers when purchased were cream to begin with, then I coffee dyed/stained ..my apologies for missing this key point out of the equation. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Hope this answers your question. Have a great day.
That is a BRILLIANT technique with the knife there! As well as the other techniques. Love it! Thank you.
Thank you so much for your kind comments.
For multiple sheets at a time, I have a leatherman with a saw blade on it and it works really well.
Fantastic! Thank you so much for sharing your method, really appreciate it.
Excellent! I love that your method uses free or nearly free tools and the effect is perfect🐝🤗❤️
Thank you so much Deborah, most kind of you. Great to do things on a budget for sure. Best wishes to you.

Hi Paula, thank you so much.
Cool idea.
Could it be done by dampening the edge first?
Exactly what I was looking for!! Thank you!!

Thank you! :)
What paper did you begin with. Card stock or copy etc. ?
Hi Sherry, I am so sorry for this very belated response, I do not know how I missed your comment. I started off with card stock. Best wishes.
Hello. What is the paper weight? Sounds heavy, could it be 28lbs? Thank you
Hi Sara. Sorry for my slow reply. I am not often signed into RUclips due to my circumstances.

Nice video and method, but that is ageing a cardboard, not paper.

could you keep posting please
Why make it so hard? Just bend the paper back and forth and then pull apart with your hands. You will get a beautiful deckled edge.
