Hi bro, glad to know that you are switching your career to fullstack. Same with me I'm also 24 used to work in hospitality industry and have made a decision to switch to fullstack web development. And I'm already done with intermediate HTML. I would like to know more about you, we can help each other.
As a tech lead, I can definitely relate to the challenges and lessons you mentioned in your video. It's always a learning process in this field, and it's important to continue learning and growing as a developer. Your perspective as a web developer is valuable, and I appreciate you sharing your experiences and insights with the community. Thank you for your contribution to the industry, and I hope your video will be helpful to others who are just starting out in web development. But a question: Why did you pick web? ML or App dev is much more in demand
Note: i know u didn't ask me but u can ignore my comment it's up to you. An app dev can't build web, and desktop versions of their mobile apps but a web developer could create an app that works on every platform web, mobile and desktop. We're the key developers of every start-up that's why web is the future and we're truly platform independent, and we earn more than app and ai developers thanks to endless freelancing opportunities we have and start-up shares.
Hey Chris, you’ve been inspiring me to try and take initiative to learn how to code, i’ve always wanted to code, i went to college for a CS degree and find myself struggling trying to balance all those classes. Your videos show me that i don’t have to do an unhappy path to get myself in the industry. Thank you for doing what you do i’m getting a Udemy course soon! ❤
As of June 2023 entering 2024, can you give us an updated outline of what to study to start a web developer career with no experience and base knowledge? Would be a great help!
I actually graduated from Coding Dojo in 2018. The in-person experience was the best. Eating and learning together. Helping each other out and playing basketball outside.
Damn I was about to forget what I'm doing and why, thanks to you my new goal is to become one of the best programmers, I will definitely try my best and I believe I'm going to achieve something great in my life ☺️
I have been watching your RUclips videos for a while and am now FINALLY on my development career path. Your videos have really served as an inspiration to never give up. So for all that… Thank you!
That's a great video Chris! I'm a CS undergraduate and have been self-studying web development. I currently have 2 amazing full-stack projects and 1 frontend, which just finished yesterday. I feel like I'll soon be ready to apply for internships. Could you make a video that talks about interview preparations?
I started to incorporate chatgpt in my learning or debugging research which for the most part feels like you have a teacher/mentor to explain things or help you code. It does need correcting though sometimes since it’ll make mistakes and repeat itself.
I was thinking on changing careers and learning full stack by doing a bootcamp. Do you think 39-40 years old is too late to get a decent entry job in web development? Have you seen any new comers who were in their 40s just starting? Any advice is appreciated.
Asking to many questions as a junior dev is a wrong turn. It's better for yourself to try and find the solution online rather to have it served by the senior devs. It's good to ask a question when you'r totally stuck.
But I wouldn’t wait until I’m totally stuck. If it should take 2 hours to fix something try it for 2-3 hours. If 1 hour try it for 90 min. If you can’t get it fixed ask for help.
I agree, for them TIME = MONEY. If you waste time being stuck and not progressing, they will not be impressed and give you shit. Don’t go online just to get bad solutions either, put something decent together with your resources or save time by asking the right questions. Some of us have a lot of pride but this is about wisdom and business. Always attempt to solve the problem first, so you can show them what you tried already. Then you can learn more efficient ways to do things.
I want to get a job within this field but I don't know where to begin. Any advice on how to search for these position and to be ready. I truly enjoy watching this video.
I know its recommended for an entry dev to initially work in office rather than remote at first, but what if you live in an area where that's not an option and moving isn't an option either?
Who said that? I was in a hybrid position and my senior developer would always get on a call or do pair programing with me. If you are self taught you can still use those same tools on the job to learn. Just apply and ask questions during the interview like how do you get team members up to speed
Been coding for 10+ years as a hobby and personal things. I need to jump into getting a job as it as I love to write code and solve problems. I just don’t know where to start
Hi Chris! Your journey has been so helpful for me as I learn to code! I'm doing Zero To Mastery right now and they recommend skipping the junior developer role and going straight for a mid-level job (so study, learn, and build more before applying). Do you agree with this or would you recommend a junior developer role for a first tech job?
I'm pretty sure it's impossible to work as a mid-level developer without being a junior since mid requires a couple years of experience and building projects sadly, isn't hands-on experience.

Also do you think that a web dev agency can be scaled up to $1,000,000/ year income? It just seems crazy to me that people can make all this money in tech without even a college degree! Excites me.

I’m in my first job as a junior at a non-tech company in a 2-man team. I came in with mainly backend experience from just a year of learning and 2-months paid work experience with a contractor (backend too). It’s my sixth week in and my manager wants me to build a GUI and he said “I thought you would be able to do a GUI by the end of the day in C#”. It’s like, I have nobody higher up to ask as he never hired a senior, and he expects me who has told him in interview and on cv that I’m backend based that he wants a GUI (that by the way, he wants written with the code logic to send and receive ASKII strings to and from a COM port device over RF) does this sound like they hired a junior to do a seniors job or that they don’t know what they’re doing? Stressed to my eyeballs!
Oh boy………I’ve been in some situations like this. Always need to deeply research the company and the team/tech stack. You need to get out of that company as soon as you can, but try to stick it out for 6+ months if possible. My first tech job I got let go after 2 months because my degree was delayed during pandemic and arguing with dumb IT guy who was acting like I stole their missing laptop. Just running up my blood pressure. Was for one of the biggest IT consulting companies. Second job was very similar situation to yours……..in fact it was worse. There was a senior developer who worked remotely in Florida that I never talked to. There was NO team of developers, the guy in Florida would do some sub-contracting where another developer would work on the code base. I’ll never work for a company again where I’m told “2 guys wrote 4 million lines of code, I don’t like big teams.” So I worked under CTO, he said to think of him as my partner in crime/friend. Well, he was a great conversationalist and very accomplished in his own right. He worked on a Mac and I a Windows, they let me choose the machine. You wouldn’t believe how many issues came with just that choice seemingly, got berated because BitBucket would throw obscure errors and I wouldn’t know what they stemmed from. When I had configuration issues of some kind, would just tell me “I have used a Mac for a long time, I won’t be able to help much if it’s something Windows oriented.” Like you, I don’t dabble much in one domain - backend for me (but plan to for some of my upcoming personal projects). I completed two or three assignments there with assistance but it was such a grueling headache, I couldn’t sleep many times. There were no teammates or a senior developer to talk to for guidance. When I got help from the CTO I was often berated and given a hard time like he didn’t want to help. So I started not wanting to communicate with him and just try my best on my own. Struggle ensued and then I ran into this dumb database error that he said doesn’t happen for him. I wasn’t strong in backend (this was fullstack role) and no idea how to solve obscure error, that prevented me from testing the assignment I was working on (cards that displayed patient transport data). He insulted me several times in the office and in front of other people. When I ran into the last problem, which wasn’t a code problem he refused to help me and I knew that spelled the end. Actually I was going to visit my mom and sisters in Maryland over the winter for a few weeks while I polished my skills and applied to other jobs, he probably sensed I was about to leave. He gave me a take home assignment, which I passed but it was nothing like working on that monolithic gigantic code base where I ran into obscure errors and no one to help me pinpoint it half the time. He would just keep saying “get your stuff working.” This was for a startup, small medical and transportation based company. So, I don’t want to just work under one or two people where my whole job will be based on getting along with them and overcoming their personality strongholds. It was so stressful and he said originally they were hiring for a senior developer. While I wasn’t given senior level tasks, it definitely felt like mid-level and was far too much for me to chew. They are definitely saving money on you and giving you higher level tasks. He started off by giving me tasks, then rushing to get it done with me and would tell the CEO I finished the task already. He would do this continually until I couldn’t match it anymore and burned out. I have a buddy in a pharmaceutical company who was hired as a senior statistical programmer out of college, yet his pay was not senior level. My current job is for a big fintech company who put me in a tight spot by ending my mentor’s contract early (about 6 months in now). Team used to have 10 people, now down to 3. Company structure is disorganized and apparently new CEO from merger is anti-remote. I’m looking to bail asap lol, working on my personal projects and applying for positions now. Hopefully by spring companies will be hiring and I will have more time in this company by then. My only teammates here are in India. Really hoping I get some good team and communication structure in my next role with advantageous tech stack. Companies are quick to give you a lesser title with more responsibilities, don’t let them run you into the ground man! The tech grind has been rough but it is starting to pay off now……
I was assigned to replace a feature in a project with another feature. Finished the work in 3 days. Had the pr up. And the pr was rejected for being too big. So they asked me to break it down to 1 file per PR. I did that (which require writing a lot more unit tests for every PR to ensure code coverage didn't decrease). As I got to 11/12 PRs completed, they said to undo everything and assigned as "senior" developer to work with me. Half the stuff he did was wrong, sloppy, full of bugs, and missing half the features. And his PR was literally twice as big as my original PR. But they accepted his because... culture of seniority. It was then I knew that I'm way better than most of these "senior" engineers, and need to find a new job with people who know what they are doing. From now on every single PR I have up stays there for weeks/months. It takes me 1-3 days to do the work per sprint, but the approval process is what really slows everything down.
Sounds like a senior that didn’t improve his knowledge and skills much, but stayed in positions for a long time. Senior by time, not skill and knowledge. I feel you.
Hey Chris I’m in school and I’m studying CS and trying to balance all learn java, js html at the same time is kinda stressful please I need your advice 😢
My suggestion: Do personal projects you are passionate about at your own pace and learn the fundamentals well! Use those technologies to solve problems and build the features you want. 😎 Never rely on school for full learning and in the classes just try to keep up, while learning and engaging. I know it’s hard, even harder if you work.
Hi Chris, can we ask why you moved to Data Engineering? The tech stack of DEs are very different from Web developers? Are there more opportunities in the Data Engineering space?
Hi I have a question. I have started my front-end journey from html/css so It seems like I know html pretty good (structure, div, meta, different inputs, button, img, p ,h etc) now I practice css so do I need to know only that base before starting js or should I be able to create likeable websites ?
I love the channels that actually care about teaching, simple titles and videos that get to the point or this guys channel with every video being some useless click bait that really teaches you nothing about software engineering and anyone who is serious about this field would never watch these videos
If anything, this tool will be incredibly beneficial for developers who struggle with searching for answers online. Have you tried it yet? Without a deep understanding of the subject matter, it would be difficult to discern when the tool is providing incorrect information. It will truly act as a force multiplier for those who know their craft.
I think it's key point to people understand this: you can't get rich by doing someone else's job unless you create your own startup company. If you're salaried: The more you earn money the more stress u have.
Chris I cannot focus on my life I am relying on my parents for financial support. I am addicted to playing video games and Warzone. I am a lazy bastard, how do I become like you and make 6 figures a year?
I was the same way until I was kicked out of every home I ever lived in. It made me homeless and changed my perspective in life to the point I never looked back ever again.
Can’t know until you give it a shot. Coding isn’t for everyone, but just like math, I do believe anyone can learn it with enough time/dedication. Just gotta dive in, start learning, and see if it’s something you’re genuinely interested in. If it’s a constant battle at every step in the process, and more frustrating than fulfilling, then that’s probably your most telling sign. 😁
Nearly 50% of this video is sponsor content. Unbelievable. I'm happy you're making this money but this is definitely NOT what I wanted to see when I entered my search phrase into the search bar.
Hey bud I totally understand why you’d be upset. I’d feel this too. This will be the only video that’s like this. I needed the money to pay for hospital bills at the time. Never again.
I’ve tried Treehouse, and the techdegree is actually really cool. ZTM was cool and everything, but the explanations aren’t super thorough. When you get lost, you’re just lost… so now you’ve moved on to Coding Dojo? Lol it was too expensive when I looked into it

I feel you.
Great video
20+ years experience. Stay away from big corps with large dev teams. Startups and smaller is a lot more fun and less soul-crushing.
Never rely on school for full learning and in the classes just try to keep up, while learning and engaging. I know it’s hard, even harder if you work.
So I noticed you were sponsored by Coding Dojo. Are they recommendation over ZTM?
Hi Chris, can we ask why you moved to Data Engineering? The tech stack of DEs are very different from Web developers? Are there more opportunities in the Data Engineering space?
Hi I have a question. I have started my front-end journey from html/css so It seems like I know html pretty good (structure, div, meta, different inputs, button, img, p ,h etc) now I practice css so do I need to know only that base before starting js or should I be able to create likeable websites ?
Thanks for your video! Also, your chapter is missing #1 =)
Oops thank you
Is it too late to start a web developing company ?
Does it help to have connections within the field?
Always
Chris are you going to start a software company in the Philippines and hire Filipino developers?
Hey, i am a junior developer in the UK earning 24k, do you think it would be worth it to move to the US and what states?
I think the pay is far greater in the US
I love the channels that actually care about teaching, simple titles and videos that get to the point or this guys channel with every video being some useless click bait that really teaches you nothing about software engineering and anyone who is serious about this field would never watch these videos
Sometimes Logic don't get clicks and it feel like gosh is it really for me ??
Hm?
How do you feel about this ChatGPT making the developer obsolete madness that's going on???
lol
not happening
If anything, this tool will be incredibly beneficial for developers who struggle with searching for answers online. Have you tried it yet? Without a deep understanding of the subject matter, it would be difficult to discern when the tool is providing incorrect information. It will truly act as a force multiplier for those who know their craft.
@@danielcano7410 force multiplier, I like that
I think it's key point to people understand this: you can't get rich by doing someone else's job unless you create your own startup company.
If you're salaried: The more you earn money the more stress u have.
Hence why living way below your means and investing your dollars in the market of a long period will be a necessity.
Chis your selling out bro
Chris I cannot focus on my life I am relying on my parents for financial support. I am addicted to playing video games and Warzone. I am a lazy bastard, how do I become like you and make 6 figures a year?
I was the same way until I was kicked out of every home I ever lived in. It made me homeless and changed my perspective in life to the point I never looked back ever again.
For me I bounced around at different jobs because the thing Im good at doesn't make money, but coding Im just meh but can make some money.
Does chatgpt scare you?
Nope. It excites me and will make our lives so much easier lol.
@@RealChrisSean good attitude about it! It's pretty amazing what it can do right now.
LOL on my last 2 weeks in coding dojo
Hi, asking for a friend, can an autistic person get a career in web development?
Because coding looks abit difficult for someone with autism

Lol it was too expensive when I looked into it
i am about to graduate in week did onsite Burbank location first stack web fund was kinda waste of time but python, react, and java stack are so good
Hey mate, chill out, you meed to do collab with @joma
The dream lol
Here in the Philippines if you're applying for junior dev you need first to have senior devs skill set. 🥲
