For this project ("Defying Gravity" is just the first from the new "Out of Oz" series), Schwartz gave him free rein to create." - See more at: playbill.com/news/article/the-story-behind-the-defying-gravity-music-video-everyones-talking-about-and-what-wickeds-composer-thought-368251#sthash.GpA17Zri.dpuf

Well, the hardcore Wicked fans are definitely going to flay me on this but I actually prefer this version to the original, especially outside of the context of the show... It doesn't convey the right emotion Elphaba needs to express at this point in the story but it's the one song i've always found ever so slightly dissonant. I appreciate the vocal mastery the original requires but it's never hit me like it's meant to and this version I find absolutely incredible. This I could listen to on repeat.

    Something has changed within me
    Something is not the same
I'm through with playing by the rules
    Of someone else's game
    Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It's time to trust my instincts
    Close my eyes and leap
    It's time to try
    Defying gravity
    I think I'll try
    Defying gravity
    Kiss me goodbye
    I'm defying gravity
And you won't bring me down!
    I'm through accepting limits
    'Cuz someone says they're so
    Some things I cannot change
But till I try, I'll never know!
Too long I've been afraid of
Losing love I guess I've lost
    Well, if that's love
It comes at much too high a cost!
    I'd sooner buy
    Defying gravity
    Kiss me goodbye
    I'm defying gravity
    I think I'll try
    Defying gravity
And you won't bring me down
    I'd sooner buy
    Defying gravity
    Kiss me goodbye
    I'm defying gravity

I LOVE THIS!!! I have to admit the first listen, I wasn't sure because it's quite different from the version in the musical. But that's the point...this is a reimagining...not a karaoke, not a copy. It conveys a different feel on purpose...and it does so beautifully. And I think because they actually WERE in the musical, they're perfect for this different arrangement. There's a place for both.

    • @dingledo23

      choir90mom agreed.
My sister and best friends life song was defying gravity. She died suddenly. This version has become very dear to me. I sang it with a friend at her funeral. We did it acapella.
This version is still triumphant but also gentle and somber. Which has helped my grieving process immensely. I've soaked my pillow in tears many nights listening to this on repeat. I hope they release the chords.
I'm singing it again at her one year gone date. Which is next month. 😰 hasn't gotten any easier. This version helps. If just for a few minutes.

This arrangement is beautiful, but just doesn't sound right with the lyrics or theme. It's Defying Gravity, not Pleading with Gravity.

I know what you mean. It's a beautiful song, truly I love this version, but its meaning - Elphaba finally standing up for herself despite everyone and everything else - is lost on it.

Love this performance and their vocals are great together but it's hilarious how everyone is romanticizing them looking at each other when it's literally sort of necessary when they're trying to hit harmonies at the same time so it sounds as neat as it does.

They need to cast theatre actors as Elphaba & Glinda. The roles are too vocally demanding for your typical cookie cutter Hollywood starlet, especially if they go the Les Mis route and sing it live. And please, no Lea Michele. I have nothing against her, but I didn't like the way she performed the different songs on Glee.
Elphaba: Rachel Tucker, Samantha Barks or Donna Vivino
Glinda: Megan Hilty, Laura Osnes, or Katie Rose Clarke (MAYBE Anna Kendrick? Idk though)
Fiyero: Aaron Tveit or Jeremy Jordan. I don't know if I'd be happy with anyone else.
Then Hollywood can play the name game with the rest of the cast.
    Boq: Daniel Radcliffe
Madame Morrible: Meryl Streep, Helena Bonham Carter, or Carol Burnett
Nessa: Emma Watson, Anna Kendrick, or Emmy Rossum
The Wizard: Victor Garber or Richard Greer. Or they could go with some of the Original Cast and do Joel Grey.
Idina & Norbert can play Elphaba & Nessa's parents and we can find some way to bring Kristen in.
But odds are they'll play the complete name game and we'll wind up with someone vocally unsuited to the task. Kinda like Russell Crowe as Javert in Les Mis.

    • @ComputerGeek1100
      @ComputerGeek1100 8 лет назад +34

I'd completely agree with casting Donna Vivino as Elphaba in the movie. Her No Good Deed is probably the best version I've ever heard.

    • @samanthaoblander9174
      @samanthaoblander9174 8 лет назад +13

+Lauren Smith I would agree, but all of the notes Madame Morrible sings are in the lower register, but acting wise it would definitely be different than what she normally does. She's a phenomenal comedic actress and it would be interesting to see her take on a villain.

This is not bad by any means...but it's just not quite right either! The moment in the story is supposed to be bold and strong and triumphant and... defiant! This sounds like two people trying too hard to sound pretty in harmony.

They're both excellent singers, but coming here after watching "For Good" from the Out Of Oz series I was expecting something better. This is a good cover indeed, but I was expecting something very magical, with a soloist (Rachel would have been perfect) taking us all somewhere else with her flawless singing.
Good rendition, but a bit disappointed.

xtinaroma I feel that the idea of the Out of Oz series is really doing something “out of the box”. “For Good” was exactly like the original version, sung by the two same people...
With the others, they took the chances to do something different. Honestly, I love the vocals in this version. It’s not a “theater” version... it’s a popular one, and it’s really good in my opinion

    Something has changed within me
    Something is not the same
I'm through with playing by the rules
    Of someone else's game
    Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It's time to trust my instincts
    Close my eyes: and leap!
    It's time to try
    Defying gravity
    I think I'll try
    Defying gravity
And you can't pull me down!
    GLINDA
    Can't I make you understand?
    You're having delusions of grandeur:
    ELPHABA
    I'm through accepting limits
    'Cuz someone says they're so
    Some things I cannot change
But till I try, I'll never know!
Too long I've been afraid of
Losing love I guess I've lost
    Well, if that's love
It comes at much too high a cost!
    I'd sooner buy
    Defying gravity
    Kiss me goodbye
    I'm defying gravity
And you can't pull me down:
(spoken) Glinda - come with me. Think of what we could
    do: together.
    (sung) Unlimited
    Together we're unlimited
Together we'll be the greatest team
    There's ever been
    Glinda -
Dreams, the way we planned 'em
    GLINDA
    If we work in tandem:
    BOTH
There's no fight we cannot win
    Just you and I
    Defying gravity
    With you and I
    Defying gravity
    ELPHABA
    They'll never bring us down!
    (spoken) Well? Are you coming?
    GLINDA
    I hope you're happy
    Now that you're choosing this
    ELPHABA
    (spoken) You too
(sung) I hope it brings you bliss
    BOTH
I really hope you get it
And you don't live to regret it
I hope you're happy in the end
I hope you're happy, my friend:
ELPHABASo if you care to find me
    Look to the western sky!
    As someone told me lately:
"Ev'ryone deserves the chance to fly!"
    And if I'm flying solo
    At least I'm flying free
    To those who'd ground me
Take a message back from me
    Tell them how I am
    Defying gravity
    I'm flying high
    Defying gravity
And soon I'll match them in renown
And nobody in all of Oz
No Wizard that there is or was
Is ever gonna bring me down!
