I don’t know why, but every time I hear this song I become very emotional. I really love this song. I hope I can sing this to my special someone someday.
Zach’s vocals threw me off a little at the beginning (no pun intended), it may have been too high for him or he was too nervous to give his all, which I see why the key change was made. Richard Marx is a saint 😂 But then the song picked up and while I didn’t like the change in his harmonies at first, I grew to love it and he just grew a lot in this one performance. This was glorious! Christy, fantastic as always. I love how they both got really hyped up with each other in the end. And the conductor just looked so pleased being there- shoot I would’ve been too!
I think the song is just written awkwardly where you have to jump up to a high note all of a sudden. It's not natural for anyone but Richard Marx. It reminds me of how different Sara sounds compared to the other Jennas in Waitress.
If you guys want to enjoy this with Derek's voice as well, there's actually a live version of these two singing it. You can look for it. It's amazing, the voice chemistry is incomparable.

Zach’s vocals threw me off a little at the beginning (no pun intended), it may have been too high for him or he was too nervous to give his all, which I see why the key change was made. Richard Marx is a saint 😂 But then the song picked up and while I didn’t like the change in his harmonies at first, I grew to love it and he just grew a lot in this one performance. This was glorious! Christy, fantastic as always. I love how they both got really hyped up with each other in the end. And the conductor just looked so pleased being there- shoot I would’ve been too!

Please, unless you have something positive about ZACH AND CHRISTY recording this stunning version of At The Beginning, please keep your comments to yourself. Derek is obviously dearly missed, but he hasn’t been with the show for 3 months now. He has moved on, so should you. Zach is an EQUALLY incredible Dmitry who has EQUALLY incredible chemistry with Christy both on and off the stage. I’ve seen them both twice and they’re both excellent. If this version really bothers you so much, I will happily refer you to the 54 Below performance where Derek and Christy sing this song. Everybody wins. Broadway is ever changing and no one can stay forever. Please give the same amount of respect you give to principals to understudies, swings, standbys and replacements.
