    bars are beats. its a slang name for it, used espicially used in the hiphop compunity. bpm and tempo tie closely together. the tempo of the song determines the bpm. you are correct, i simply changed the name bars to beats.

  • @JulianGrayMedia
    @JulianGrayMedia  11 лет назад

    your correct. but from a basic stand point 2 measures is a better increment to mix in. other wise you will have things ariving at the wrong times. you also could have 3/4 time measures and 6/4 time measures. but the best time to mix in is 2 measures of 4/4

    Gain is nooooooot the same thing as volume. Gain is the essentially how strong the signal is, where as volume is the actual output that you hear. Turning your gain up or down will change the volume but it also distorts the music. As you turn up your gain, the signal gets stronger and can cause your waveform to clip, meaning at the top/bottom it will flatten out against the ceiling, causing distortion, depending on whether it's hard clipping (where a large portion of the waveform is cut off) or soft clipping (where a small portion is cut off). That's why guitar distortion pedals typically use a gain knob to control the amount of distortion is applied to your signal. It is possible to use the gain knob to get more volume, but you need to watch your signal meter and make sure it doesn't turn red/max out, otherwise your mix will sound awful and if done for long enough, it will ruin your speakers.

    its not the same as a volume. but its still a volume param. its like a combo of a volume fader and a limiter. it makes the maximum volume a track can play at as well as adjusts its volume. ive seen many djs use just the gain pot in there mixes. i use them both.

    Just to let you know, the gain control sets the input level of your channel or deck. If you are peaking out and distorting the music on your input, you turn down the gain to bring the input level down to a level to stop the distortion. The volume faders raise and lower the overall volume of the track or deck. If you have an improper gain structure your music is going to sound like shit all night. It does not do the same thing as the volume fader.

  • @danielcecchin

  • @JulianGrayMedia

    typically, you want to keep in the "traditional" genre of controllers when your first starting out. ie. 2 platters a mixer and a few knobs. some good controllers like this are the ion "discover dj" the numark "idj" series or their "mixtrack" (i use this as a section of my setup). some things you may want to avoid when your starting out is clip launching controllers like the novation "launch pad" or the djtechtools "midifighter".you have to know the basic understanding of djing before using those

  • @JulianGrayMedia

    you see. thats the thing. gain is the amount of volume a certain track has in the mix. it sets the bar for the maximum sound that can come out of a single track.. but its still technically a volume parameter

    A gain control is not a volume control. Volume is how loud you play the music through the speakers. Gain is for matching the level of the tracks.

    Sometimes songs are more complex and can have things like 3 counts of 16, repeatedly, or just between things there’s maybe 4 or 8 beats, or just an amount of time that’s not a whole number, or sometimes theres even weird shit like 7/4 time signatures and at that point it’d be pretty dam hard to use a track in a mix without immediate transitions unless you can manage to skip a beat every 8 beats or loop every 7th beat in the other song

    I appreciate you making this video. Thanks. One thing I don't get is I never saw where you match bpm's between songs. A tutorial saw on version 8 had the DJ hitting a button that would match beats. The second and third song you played here were both in the 128bpm range but slightly off from each other....maybe such a small difference doesnt matter or you have all the songs with similar bpm's organized together to know what to choose from ahead of time.
