This video is what helped me and inspired me to dj. 12 years later I watch this video again to remind me how much I love what I do and how far along I've came. Thank you DJ Ravine!!
One day back in 2010 or 11, I was searching for a virtual dj tutorial and ended up discovering happy hardcore. Thank you. Many years later, hhc is still my favorite genre of all time. 💖💖
sweet tutorial, was playing around with this and I just got a few house music mixes down and they sound fantastic. All it takes is practice, thank you :) DjRavine
I'm not a real DJ, unfortunately as much as it was my dream to be one, it won't happen, but learning to be a Virtual DJ like this I personally think is fine when your audience is your friends all hangin out at home in basements.
It's really not that tough. Just get some decks, vinyl and practice like fuck. You can get good real quickly. 10 hours a day for two years and I was in. 23 years on and I'm shit hot Braaaaaaaap
Can you make a new video about the new version of VDJ, as i can't find the bass cross-fader in the new version, maybe making a new mix with new version will help a lot of people, thanks
That's exactly something I was wondering. It's usually almost effortless to mix from one song to another smoothly when they have the same key. See I want to learn little tips and tricks like that. They make the BIGGEST difference
Ewww dont tell people to use the sync button. Anyone who needs sync has no business mixing music in the 1st place until they learn to beat match, as if it's so difficult to do. The software even tells you the tempo of your songs, so if you have a 170bpm track you want to mix into a 175bpm track, you should know right then and there how much you need to adjust the pitch, thus eliminating the use of sync.
Convinient how? The software shows you the BPM, how much more convenient do you need? And yeah, you could say having BPM displays is just as bad, but everyone i knew would manually count the beats of our vinyls and write the bpm on the labels. Sync button allows new "djs" to bypass learning a very important skill. People use sync for the wrong reasons, like mixing with 2 decks, ect.
A lifetime??!!?? I had beat matching down within a couple months and this was long before Serato and Virtual DJ came around. People will just look for any reason they can to validate using sync. I see no use for it.
Dude, when you mixing on stage, in club or other place, NO ONE fking cares in the crowd, are you using sync or not. Crowd came for good music, for relaxing and beat the sh*t out of dance floor. Beatmatching takes away time from you, less time for creativity between 2,3 or 4 tracks. So, get your ass away from bedroom or garage DJing and after that you'll understand if it's good to use Sync or Not.
Yumitor So exactly how does Sync allow you to be more creative? Please someone explain this to me because i fail to see the justification for using it. And ive been DJing for 15 years and have played out plenty of times. I can match a track in as little as a few seconds, even with 3 or 4 decks, and still have all the time in the world for throwing in FX, Scratching, triggering samples, actual beat juggling over a beat and so on, all without a sync button. So tell me, how is sync going to benefit me?
I've been using virtual with this skin for ages. Never tried using the other features until I watched the video. Great tip. Will be using it more in the future!
So many years ago I saw that VDJ was on sale on Steam, googled for a tutorial and found this video. I just remember hearing the transition and thinking "holy shit, that sounded *awesome!* I wanna do that!" Which is to say, this video is what really got me into DJing in the first place. So thank you so much for making it!
You did a great job mate :) i just want to say something. i am 16 and i have been using virtual dj from a really long time... recently i bought myself a Numark Mixtrack Pro and it has been great ever since... guys this is a really good hobby and an even better profession so if u think you are a good dj. Don't stop mixing... just learn to do it better and better and if u do it good u will get the chance to live your live like you never imagined... in the good way :)
Thanks @DjRavine. This is simpler than I thought it would be. I wish I could fly to Las Vegas and catch you live. Unfortunately, I can't even afford the ticket.
This is the first video I used to learn how to DJ with software. Ravine is a goat. Once you hit your first few mixes and jump into the controller/software game, remember that you're already using the greatest software available (VDJ). Grab the pro version of VDJ8 and thank me later (in a reply right here). I tried them all and none offer what VDJ has.
I've been Djing for about 4 years now using various hardware but solely Traktor Pro as software.. I notice a lot of clubs i play at, the other djs use a combination of CDJs and Serato Scratch, but most do not use Virtual dj or Traktor. What software (if any) do you prefer, use and recommend using for someone with an external controller (like the Traktor Kontrol S4) and why? Just curious on your opinion here 5 some odd years later xD
Still helping dj,s all these years later wish you could do a new up dated tutorial with all the newer features of virtual dj a slightly advanced tutorial when ever you get some free time of course xxxx
to answer your question yes you can "swap" the basslines if thats what you meant. Myself personally, I like to wait for a drop or something, maybe loop a bar or two, then turn the bass on A down and B up. That usually does it for me, and when you are choosing which songs to mix its best to pick songs that compliment each other, so get a bassline that will sound good with the highs and mids of the previous/current song.
Listen I don't get this working, now I have virtual DJ 8 and I can't find the skin you're using in this video, the settings and everything is completely different, what to do?
i like the music that you made however i would like to know what your thoughts would be on a good deck that would be simple enough for a beginner to use but still well rounded enough to mix a wide variety of music
I downloaded both the skin from your link and virtual dj 8. Put it in the skins folder zipped up and it didn't work. Are you sure you don't need to unzip it?
Thanks man! Hopefully it will make me start it :) It did look easy for now. I would like to mix Liquid DnB and Dubstep (some liquid too). Anything I have to remember while mixing those genres?
hey my friend I regularly use VLC media player to play my music but I bought me virtual dj broadcaster and i wanted to see if you can tell me how can you do autoplay to your music list and also is it possible to skip playlist songs automatically so that it wont play them in order and so that it can jump from song one to song number 25? can u please help me?
Pretty good tutorial imo. Close to how I'd do it, though a few differences since I'm usually more prog house/electro/trance than hardstyle. One thing I would suggest for anyone though, when it comes to song selection, is to pay attention to the key of the song. Mixing harmonically (progressing through compatible keys) sounds so much better than just picking random songs that aren't in harmony.
But i dont want the tracks to have the same bpm. I like them to have the original bpm they was produced in the strart. I am not talking about mixing a 90 bpm with a 120 but if they are are i dont wont to change them. What mixing technic should i use in this case?
good vid ,for beginners like me , I have most of my music from limewire Can music be insourced to this program from limewire or cd's or windows media player ? Thanks Ben
I did some research and found out a very simple solution. Step 1: Download the skin and leave it as a zip file. Step 2. Go to finder and press CMD+SHIFT+G. Step 3: Type ~/Library/ and press enter. Step 4: Scroll down until you find the VirtualDJ folder and navigate to it's skins folder. Step 5: Drag and drop the ZIP file of the skin. Step 6: Restart virtualDJ and it should be there.
Which controller would you recommend for a beginner I've picked 3, pioneer ddj sb, numark mix track pro 1 or 2, and stantons scs.4dj. Or if you have another suggestion of a controller. Thanks
I'm just staring at the Maple story icon, and am beyond curious to know what server you're on. Also I love the Evo. I feel like you're me in another life.
DjRavine i have some questions and it could be really nice to get them answerd. 1.) If i am going to make a 10m mix and i start by choosing a song that is 125 bpm am i then limited to only songs with 123-126 bpm for the whole mix? 2.) I dont have the skin in you tutorial do you know where i can get ? thx -Beginner Dj
Is it absolutely necessary to drag a song? Is it possible to completely start from scratch? I just want to create my own song, from nothing.(: Please reply!

There's a free alternative called Mixxx with full functionality. Here's the download link: Ez.com/mixxx (US only)
Thank you. That helped me a lot.
Cool software! Thanks
Dang, it doesn't open for me.
Thanks for the link, I will download it now.
yeah that's a cool alternative. Will try it sure

you are just writing this trying to defend something you had to learn the hard way, technology and young kids will replace what you use.... your ears.
Actually quite amazed how a 30 second lesson in beats and bars completely unlocks a song you've heard a million times.
I've been using virtual with this skin for ages. Never tried using the other features until I watched the video. Great tip. Will be using it more in the future!

+Evan Davis Holy cheese, you look exactly like my brother.
this video is what helped me get started djing. I now finally own a controller and use Serato DJ. Thanks DJ Ravine for your help!

The beer bottles and maple story icon add to your credibility
Thank you so much, I'm doing my first attempt at dj'ing in 20 days and I was freaking out, I'll practice a lot and hopefully it'll go great.

i think this has been one of the easiest lesson of Virtual Dj... i will add this

12 anni fa, intro tutorial e outro, era avanti anni luce...
I like to come back to this vid from time to time
I remember this... Ahh.. Virtual Dj and the Numark Mixtrack Pro... Takes me back.

Just curious on your opinion here 5 some odd years later xD
Do I have to pay for MixLab v3.1 or is it for free somewhere? My Virtual DJ doesn't have it as an option.
This is why I subscribed DJ Ravine.
Still helping dj,s all these years later wish you could do a new up dated tutorial with all the newer features of virtual dj a slightly advanced tutorial when ever you get some free time of course xxxx
This also helped me years ago. Big up UK Hardcore!
Guy, u are the very best. That session was awesome
Yes, it would. There's usually a button near the BPM indicator that slowly returns the BPM to normal, but it may sound warped on the return.
I know the video is very old but your sound sounds comfortable
RESPECT !
FINALLY A GOOD THING ! BLESS.
GOOD TO GO FOR MY HALLOWEEN PARTY
Stahp bein alive.

Sometimes I use sync and sometimes I don't but when I do it sounds better than most the songs I've mixed without it
Do you use vdj primarily or ableton live or any other software?
Pioneer CDJ 2000's are pretty damn SIICCK!
Thank you so much. Exactly what I was looking for. Helped me out a lot man, again. Much appreciated.
I downloaded both the skin from your link and virtual dj 8. Put it in the skins folder zipped up and it didn't work. Are you sure you don't need to unzip it?

On VDJ8 my itunes list has been loaded with several tracks having just a number instead of a title, how do I replace the number with the correct title
DJ Ravine, I'd like you to know that you're my DJ role model and favorite!!!
I tried watching this thing through captions, couldn't finish I was laughing too hard.
Thanks Ben
Limewire is still alive?!
+Bit Pixeled haha I still use frostwire, my computer is dying from it haha
I've also mapped the deck 1 and 2 volumes to a key, makes it a little easier as you can use your mouse on the eq crossfader whilst changing volume

Thanks so much! Im going to be making a mix for a party here soon
What is the 00:00 on where he talks about fitting the Mixlab V3.1 into your window?!

Step 1: Download the skin and leave it as a zip file.
Step 2. Go to finder and press CMD+SHIFT+G.
Step 3: Type ~/Library/ and press enter.
