My only problem with this movie was it ended. I wanted more of Hollow Earth, I wanted more of Godzilla being a character rather than a spectacle, I wanted more of Apex creating and experimenting with MechaGodzilla, I wanted more Monsterverse world building. But in the end, I had a great time with this, and I’m glad it didn’t take itself seriously for the most part, and instead gave us a fun cheesy monster movie, just like the original. This is the Godzilla and Kong movie my childhood self would’ve went nuts for, and even at 25 years old, I still felt like that young child who got inspired to get into the art of filmmaking thanks to seeing the behind the scenes bonus feature from Godzilla Tokyo SOS. Nowadays, as someone who was meh with the Monsterverse, this movie cements my love for the Godzilla series and monster movies in general. It’s about time Godzilla got the respect and silliness from the general public he deserves. Finally, people care about this series that I was made fun of for liking Godzilla many years ago. Godzilla as a series is finally accepted. I look forward to seeing where Godzilla and Kong go in terms of films or shows after this movie.

I loved the ending with Kong at home and peacefully enjoying life. I was hoping for a scene of Godzilla arriving on an island (future Monster Island) with Mothra and her babies, Rodan flying overhead and some other monsters. That would have been a nice "curtain call" scene like the end of Destroy All Monsters.

While true, in this instance I think more would have been less. All the so called fat would have really exposed the flaws. This way, "all meat, no filler" approach left us satisfied. One thing that I haven't seen mentioned... just how good the CGI is in this movie. This is a first class job. Yeah, UftD did talk about the daytime and HK scenes but the whole experience is pretty spectacular. I have the feeling that Edwards would have killed to have such quality and would have made a much different movie if he had gotten it.

My biggest gripe was that this movie could've focused on Apex and Serizawa for the Mechagodzilla plotline and thus presented a genuinely conflicting view to team Kong while not being so completely throw away, but in the end I thought the rest of the movie was competently executed, and a super fun time. It knows it's completely ludicrous and revels in that fact

That's probably what Adam Wingard wanted to do, but he was stuck with that shitty Milly Bobby Brown contract from the last movie and had to bludgeon her into the plot somehow. Legendary has mostly made good calls and has been really cool with how they treat their directors, but that's gotta be like the dumbest decision ever to have someone contracted for multiple movies when you change the director and script with each one.

This film, whatever you wanna say about it's path to the conclusion, delivered on the ending. Godzilla's legacy has always been as king of the monsters. His title is secured. Kong, for the entirety of his existence has always been a figure of tragedy and a victim of human interference. I was happy to the point of tears that they finally broke that cycle. Whoever you went into the theatre rooting for, your kaiju won. Victory is all in perspective and both attain that which they value most in the end.

The director is a fellow graduate from my alma mater.
Having said all that the only real con to the movie is that there are moments where the director expects you to turn your brain off.
Like when they have Kong on the boat. They claim that they found a route that is outside of Godzilla's territory. Technically the entirety of the world's oceans are Godzilla's territory. So logically Godzilla should have attacked the minute he realized Kong was no longer on Skull Island however they make his attack happen when they're at least halfway to their destination. We see in king of the monsters that Godzilla went to Antarctica as soon as Ghidorah woke up. Godzilla's arrival and Ghidorah getting out of hibernation it was all a very short window of time between events.

I saw the film 3 times on HBO max and i can safely say that as a monster brawl, as a Godzilla movie, i thought it was good. It accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do, delivering epic battles in both day and night, all gorgeously shot and framed! No cutaways, no weather effects or shrouded in darkness, just Godzilla and kong and mechagodzilla all fighting. The film embraces the silliness and high tech vibe that while no consistent with the gritty realistic tone of G14 or KSI, at least was still pretty neat to see. Unfortunately, it's a pretty mediocre to bad movie, like kotm the pacing moves so fast that it never really takes its time to explain or move the plot in a naturalistic way, instead it just rushes by character and important plot points that it makes the film incomplete. An obvious example is the human villain, Ren Serizawa, whose a huge wasted opportunity and motivation isn't explained at all. Mechagodzilla himself, while badass and steals the scene, is barely in the film and feels like fan service and nothing more. The film could've been worked on so much more, and part of me wishes Gareth Edwards came back to direct KOTM ans GVk to gave the universe some consistency in tone and vision since this film doesn't feel like it is part of the same universe as G14 or KSI, and even discards some or the continuity and lore. With that said, I'm still glad i saw the film, i respect and appreciate the ambitions despite the serious flaws and i wouldn't mind if the MV does continue or if it ends here. I'm just thankful that the rematch of the century between the two biggest monsters of all time and a trilogy of Godzilla movies from America done pretty well happened, something that we never thought would happen in our lifetime. I didn't love or hate the film, I'm someone whose in the middle, as said before, great kaiju brawl but mediocre film.

People don't wanna see humans in a Godzilla film and thats facts. If i wanna see a film with great written characters i would go watch something else. If the humans are fine that's good if the monsters are fine that's even better but when it comes to the critics they always hate on human characters regardless of what you do with the characters. You can add more humans than monsters and the critics will complain you can add more monsters than humans and the critics will complain you can give the movie a equal amount of humans and monsters and the critics will still complain.
To put it shortly humans are necessary in monster movies but when it comes to us fans and even the General audience too when the humans aren't good we can still be entertained by the titled stars those being the monsters which do count as characters as well. The critics don't have a good track record of rating films in he first place so people at this point don't care what they say. They defend bad films and hate good films and switch right back to defending good films and hating bad films they don't know how to criticize films at all. At the end of the day gvk was still a successful movie and it's on its way to making more money and the general audience and fans are enjoying it regardless of its flaws good or bad it's entertaining either way and that's the movie's job to entertain people and make people have fun there's nothing wrong with that.

@@yonsetv5223 The human character hate on 2014 and KOTM were for separate reasons, to my understanding.
2014's was killing Bryan Cranston's Joe Brody-the heart of the movie-and leaving the rest up to Aaron Taylor-Johnson (though I agree with UFTD that he did a better job than people claim).
KOTM doesn't spend enough time with its central characters to really flesh them out which is objectively a strike against your film, godzilla movie or not. Though Serizawa was properly developed and given a commendable sendoff.

Something that I have nothing and i havent seen anyone talk about it, it the common theme of dealing with loss with team kong.
    1. Jia loses her parents, so she attaches herself to kong, when she lies to kong that there are more of his species in antarctica you can tell that she feels bad. In the end of the movie when she has to explain to him that godzilla isnt the enemy, at first kong doesnt trust her and then she cries, because she understands why he doesnt trust her, i whish they would’ve expanded on this.
    2. Same thing with the blonde guy, he lost his brother and hes been ridiculized, so when someone believes in his theories he latches onto them, he doesnt even question their motifs, and he essentially doesnt care about how he will get there, he just wants to see the hollow earth, But as the movie goes along he essentially warms up to kong and saves kong, althought i wouldve liked if he knew about mechagodzilla and the creators intention behind it.
    3. You can even see that with Kong, he’s been alone for most of his life and in the beginning of the movie you can tell taht he likes being around jia, he considers her his home, but when he is lied to, he rushes because towards the hollow earth entrace because his actual family may be there and in the end of the movie he learns that his home is more important than his family.
I whish they would've shown more of kong having an emotional turmoil and show him choosing to go to the surface bc jia is already there and he has to rescue her. I really agree with what you said about cutting the fat but i also think it’s unfair to not pay attention to small things in this movie and call this just a mindless blockbuster, because this movir has a beating heart, even tho it may be buried under tons of kaiju action.

Though Kong moments later was dying, Godzilla showed he wasnt on a mission to just rip Kongs head off. 2, electrifying Kong to bring him back. There were several nods to the first encounter in the 60s. I never expect some academy award type movie. Its a fun ride and they ended it well. We dont always need set ups for another film. I appreciated the finality. I would have liked to have seen Rodan or Mothra share a scene with Kong as a nod of welcoming. Some day. Now, if they can only acquire the rights to my favorite turtle, my inner child will have peace. Earth protectors Mothra and Gamera need screen time and a rumble between the Gs is a must. Will somebody out there just go negotiate for Gameras rights.

His loss wasn't because Kong was weaker, it was more because Kong was out of his depth in experience. This is detailed in the novel. In it, they explain how secluded a life Kong has lived. The first proper, huge Titan he even faced killed almost everything on Skull Island (Camazotz). He's never faced or fought anything like Godzilla, but according to the novel Godzilla has not only fought Kong's before he has even beaten several of them in the war between Titanus Kong's and Titanus Gojira's in the Hollow Earth. Kong has faced Skullcrawlers at most, he isn't ready for what Godzilla can bring. Hell, he isn't even ready for what his own species can do, he hasn't unlocked the intellectual capability his race exudes, building vast throne rooms and temples, making weapons of his own (not using makeshift tools, actually constructing weapons) nor has he even achieved contact with humans the way Kongs of old did. In fact in the novel it also explains physically Kong holds his own until Godzilla dislocates his shoulder. Another bout after a few years fighting in the Hollow Earth would be more even than this one, tho he did fairly decent here for a guy who's first enemy was literally Godzilla.

Its unlikely that Godzilla will feel threatened by Kong by in the future, or vice versa. He’s the alpha of the surface, whereas Kong is now the alpha of the Hollow Earth. The two can now remain in separate worlds, without either one interfering in the activities of the other. This works out for both creatures, as Kong making the Hollow Earth his new domain proves that the MonsterVerse can indeed have two alpha Titans.

I could've used more of an arc for Godzilla, but I dug what I got, and enjoyed him being crankier this time. The human characters are thin because they're not the focus. Godzilla 2014's characters were also actually quite thin for how stretched out their screentime got (especially the son). Here, the thin characters basically got us from one scene to another. I also agree that the logic of the plot is ridiculous, but I think it's enjoyably ludicrous. Gravity inversion? Blowing a hole to the center of the earth? This is hokey in a way that makes the kaiju seem even more larger than life than they did in the Showa era.

I think one thing that would really interesting to explore is the advancement of human weapons to fight against kaiju. In KOTM, the military was able to build and deploy the oxygen destroyer which nearly killed Godzilla and would presumably work pretty well against any other Titan that isn't Ghidorrah. Now we have a private corporation that was able to build a mechanical titan that nearly wiped the floor with Godzilla. Godzilla was tired after fighting Kong, but it is quite likely he might have lost even at full strength against MechaGodzilla. This was also done very publicly so even if Monarch is able to secure all the data on MechaGodzilla, people now know that it can be done and humans can fight the titans so a new movie focusing more on the consequences of the new technologies could be fun.

Making team Godzilla just be Maddy, Mark, and Ilene working to figure out the plot from Monarchs base, and adding more depth to Team Kong and The villains wouldve made the moving 8× better.
Still very glad the movie is doing well, hope that leads to more American daikaiju movies alongside the stuff Toho is cooking up in the future.

My issue with KOTM as much as I enjoyed it was that it didn't know what it was. A sincere family drama with tragic loss and reconciliation at its heart or a crazy ass Showa movie.
I love that GvK embraces being a crazy ass Showa movie made modern. It's fights are breathtaking, it has wacky but enjoyable human subplots and genuine heart with Kong centering the piece.
If Shin Godzilla was a modern masterpiece in the symbolism stakes a la G'54, this is a modern Kaiju master piece in the vain of KKvG or GvH.
I've always wanted to see a Godzilla or Kong film with a major budget that is essentially riffing the 60s TOHO production, I thought it would be the thing that finally made Godzilla mainstream and I think this might have achieved it.

This movie was everything I was hoping it would be. It knew exactly what it was, and crushed it! I definitely was staring at the screen with my mouth open smiling like a kid again. It was well paced, gorgeous looking, human characters were just passable enough for me, and they represented the G-Man and Kong very well. Fantastic flick in my opinion.

Good review! Yes, it came off as one of the lesser Showa era films, maybe something like Destroy all Monsters or Godzilla vs Megalon, but still good. There are people that don't like it, but that was to be expected. The real question is: will this be the last Godzilla film?? I feel that they may have painted themselves into a corner with this one. I think if they can make another it may be time to go off world, which they should've done with Transformers, but never did.

I feel like the people behind the Monsterverse respond really well to criticism.
Too dark? Crank up the lighting and make cool shots
Not enough Godzilla? Show him kicking more ass
Humans taking screentime away from the monsters in 2014? Do the bare minimum with the humans and give the monsters what they deserve because no one cares about the humans even if they're good
Giant monster fights? FUCK YEAH GIANT MONSTER FIGHTS!!

For me, the most love it or hate it thing about it was Mechagodzilla. On the one hand, he is the generic final minute boss, who brings the fighting heroes together. On the other hand, him being a revived Ghidorah, makes him an already established villain, who is back for revenge. That's what saved him, but oh boy did I wish he had more screentime, and more hints that it's Ghidorah, who is in control. Like perhaps the Skullcrawler test, could have been a full on fight between Mechagodzilla and a previously established monsterverse titan, where he shuts down before the fight is over, but then Ghidorah takes over over for a second, and wins. Put such a scene early in the movie, and it would have been so much better.

The movie sounds like it has hints of drama and even realism in places you wouldn't expect to find it.
If we're going full "empty spectacle," then logically the fight should be as even as possible or for Kong to scrape the win as the underdog, but instead it's fairly one-sided in Godzilla's favor, which makes Kong even more sympathetic and highlights that his battle is an act of defiance in the face of overwhelming odds.
"Kong bows to no one" means very little if nothing can strike fear into him.
This in turn allows Godzilla to be in his element as a force of terror. These aspects were muted in 2014 and KOTMs because we needed Godzilla to be the underdog until the climax. Now we get to see how scary it feels to be the one facing Godzilla.

I did like Godzilla KOTM more because I felt it was better paced and delved into the lore and themes of what's going on a bit more.
But I also understand why general audiences enjoyed Godzilla vs. Kong so much, given it does just give what they came to the cinema for, which is watching Godzilla and Kong punch each other in the face.
I do hope we get an extended version that fleshes things out a bit more, though. The director has said he won't, but you never know.

Godzilla 2019 criticism- too much human stuff
Godzilla vs Kong criticism- too little human stuff

Personally, this might be my favorite Monsterverse movie, it’s not favorite Godzilla or Kong movie, but it’s definitely my favorite of what this series has delivered. Sure the human characters aside from Jia are still on the bland side, and the score is a step down when compared that of KOTM, but the Kaiju scenes are spectacular. I like how Kong had more personality than in Kong: Skull Island, I love how Godzilla was more Violet and Destructive than in the previous Monsterverse movies, and Mechagodzilla was an absolute Beast in this movie, and best of all he’s the Bad Guy!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!! FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I also like how we finally get to see the Hollow Earth, and they definitely went for a Journey to the Center of the Earth style which I think works for this type of movie. Like I said, it’s not the best Kong movie, or the best Godzilla movie(not even in my Top 10) but it’s definitely my personal favorite of the Monsterverse movies. 4 out of 5 for me.

This is very well-articulated and is essentially what I felt about it. As much as I’d like something thematic, I had a great time watching this. KotM had more thematic elements and at the end of the day, I just had a much better time watching this one. I’d love to see a film that felt like a combo of the two. The thematic, world building strengths of KotM and the well-lit/choreographed action of this film

1st off, thanks for your great channel. Yes, this film isn't perfect but it lives up to the title. I saw it in Dolby w/ my grown son & it was one of the best times @ a movie I've ever had. For spectacle, it far surpassed all superhero movies ever done. It was basically the best of the old 70's GODZILLA films in 1 movie w/ a massive budget. Can't wait for the new era of TOHO GODZILLA films now.

Maybe it's because this movie feels like a big-budget Showa film that I love it so much. I grew up with Showa era films and it's good to have the goofy plotlines with utilitarian characters. Not every movie in the franchise needs to be Shin Godzilla (I love that movie too). Godzilla movies can be many things, from serious movies like 2014 to goofy films like GvK, and that's part of what I love about this series.

Godzilla 2014 is still my fav. Dark, horrory and realistic. And the music is still the best from all of the movies imo.
Edit: I left Godzilla 2014 fulfilled but at the end of GvK I felt like something was missing. Absolutely great movie imo but not the best.
