Deer seem to be crazy no matter what time of year here in western PA...we see them in the day, in the evening, at night. TommyG is very good at spotting them. Glad you have never hit one. No, we don't let it stop us from riding.
I think they're crazy in Ohio, too. We watched a huge buck run full speed across a golf course and put his head down right before he hit the side of a van. Staggered the deer, but he then ran off. The van didn't fair so well.
I hit a deer on a motorcycle back in the 70s when I was a teenager. I was young and resilient and lucky enough to walk away with only some stitches needed in my arm. It's something that stays with you forever. Currently ride a 2020 Gold Wing. Not crazy about riding in the dark. I've had some close calls since then, but I'm always on the lookout.
I'm sure that's a vivid memory. Yeah, we don't bounce back as quickly when we get older. Thanks for watching and commenting
Nice road! If we are in a deer traffic area, I always remind Dawn to help me look out for them. We have avoided dusk riding in some situations in that season. But just keep living!
We noticed that West Virginia has a lot of deer hanging around the edge of roads at dusk. Even on the interstates, they were in large groups standing next to the road eating grass. Fortunately, they stayed off the road and let us ride by before crossing😏
I worry enough about deer to be very wary of them during evening hours. It doesn’t stop me from riding, but it heightens my spider senses !!!
I imagine there are a ton of deer in your neck of the woods! And a lot of other creatures you wouldn't want to run into.
@@motorcycleden Very true, I’ve come across a few of the bears in my travels as well!!!
@@Motoramblings my Dad and I seen one come down out of a tree on the Tail of the Dragon, then disappeared into the weeds. Didn't know if it was heading toward the road or what. That's been my only experience with a bear while riding.
@@motorcycleden I’ve had a few encounters, mostly just passing by each other. I do have a video where I can across one eating on the side of the road. I stopped, and watched him for a bit!! I used to see them constantly when I was delivering the mail. Usually the best part of my days….
@Motoramblings the Mrs wouldn't be too happy if I stopped and watched him eat. Lol Cool experience, though!
Definitely have to be wary of the deer in my area, too. But it doesn't make me stop riding. But, boy, can they come at you like a random strike of lightning.
I even had a big ol' wild turkey scoot across my front yard a few days ago. Have to be careful for those around here, as well. :) And racoons, skunks and possums.
While on the bike, I've never had to miss a racoon or skunk (thank goodness) but deer and turkey have given me close calls. The Mrs was just telling me about a guy on a fjr forum just wrecked from hitting a turkey. Some of those things are huge.
I stay alert for them, but it doesn't stop me from riding.
That's good! They blend into the scenery so well, it can be hard to see them. Especially at dusk.
Had two occurres last week on the Natchez Trace. First one I swear was a big foot sighting.. it was running on the road then after I backed off the throttle it took off into the woods.. deer... the 2nd one was just standing in the middle of the road and off he goes up into the woods..
Bigfoot sighting, awesome! I'd hate to hit a Bigfoot, lol. We rode the northern half and I don't think we seen one deer.
Did you ride the entire Trace? How did you like it?
@@motorcycleden yep. whole thing from south to north..and the best part was that last 12 miles or so.. otherwise boring pretty much except for the sites like the reservoir needs jackson mississippi.
@dougm5231 that's what I was thinking. At least you can say you rode it.
Thanks for the info
They just stand there in packs ….
I got hit by a small (thank God) doe. It was early in the am she was running along a bridge. I slowed down and started moving over, she turned right unto my side. She hit my crash bar. The bike shook pretty bad but i kept it up. Benrt my crash bar and cracked my lower fairing.
Good thing you were able to keep ot up. Some of those deer seem suicidal! I've seen them do some crazy things.
Never hit one (on a bike, I've bumped one in a car), missed by less than a foot once though. Just something to be wary of. not worry about. Rode down to Tazewell VA one time, arrived late, came down VA61 from I75 (if I'm remembering the route numbers right), figured there would likely be deer around so took it slower than I normally would, sure enough, came around the first right-hander and there was a six-point buck right by the road. He stayed put though. Less than a mile later, two more came out across the road, and there was another in the middle of town! Had a real close call a couple years ago up in PA on the way to my mom's place, heading up US11 near Danville. That part has a center lane for left turns and a through lane on each side; there was a car stopped on the shoulder with its flashers on, and I moved over into the center lane going by, and I very nearly didn't see the deer carcass in the lane another hundred yards ahead! Actually ran over a hoof. I've run over an opossum, but thankfully never anything bigger!
When we were in West Virginia at night on one of the interstates, there were deer all alongside side just there eating grass. Didn't see any come out in the road.
At least all you hit was the hoof. I've hit a possum in a car and felt like I hit a concrete block.
Had an interesting not-so-close encounter down in NC back in October, riding out of Maggie Valley one morning heading towards Cherokee, just outside of town. There was an animal walking by the opposite side of the road, at my first indirect glance I thought it was a horse; then I looked right at it, and saw the head. Not a horse but a female elk! Glad she stayed over on the other side!
@triumphrider9796 yeah, those things are huge! Wouldn't want to run into an elk.
Two years ago in Allegheny National Forest at 4:30 PM in 90* heat in July a buck ran out of the woods and broadsided us. I had no time to react? Bike was totaled. I broke 4 ribs, wife and I had lots of road rash. She's never riding again. After a year I bought another bike and just rode 500 miles round trip to see my brother. Instead of the turnpike I took Route 30 over all the mountains!!! Screw the deer 🦌 (my head was really on a swivel though!)
Sorry to hear that happened to you guys. It makes no sense to me why a deer does that, but we watched one run clear across a golf course and intentionally hut the side of a van. Had to scared the people in the vehicle. It was a big buck and crushed the side of the van in. Glad to hear you got another bike and I'm sure you're extremely alert watching for deer.
Yes would be scary with deer 🦌 going across the road, however I'd take the chance. Riding a bike is dangerous anyway so just go ride. We went driving in our tiny car the other month and a massive cow almost as big as our car flew out on the road all of a sudden without warning, and we just about hit it. But we were ok. So I don't worry about stuff on the road & go for it. Also riding on the highway on bikes is dangerous where cars fly everywhere across the road but you just have to cope and keep your wits about you & ride on.
Tiny car? What type of car is it? Hitting a cow would be very bad.
@@motorcycleden It was a Suzuki Swift and the cow was almost as long as half as wide as the car. Like a big bear size.
