The light on the mic comes on when using USB because that means the mic is being powered by the USB and you are using the built-in converters. You don't get a light when using XLR. You should be hearing the mic in both ears, but it won't be stereo because a microphone is a mono source. Awesome video! I had purchased a presonus bundle pack years ago and it was too difficult. This seems a lot easier! Question: Can I use Garage Band instead of Pro Tools on my IPad?
I just bought the 3rd generation ! I’m now trying to record over a instrumental from my iMac I can hear myself through my head phones and the mic is on but when I play it back my voice does not play. I’m currently using a free daw called soundbridge could it possibly be the program or the interface ??
What is your process? Is the background music playing back from the DAW or another app? Can you see the vocal track recorded in your DAW? Is the output of the vocal track routed properly? Make sure the Scarlett is set as the playback device for your DAW. And you may need to checkout Focusrite Control to ensure you have the proper outputs routed to your headphones.
BenoniStudio the background music is playing through the DAW ..no I can’t see the vocal track recorded on the daw either .. but thanks I’ll check to see if it’s routed right it seems like it is though
very well done. what if you aren't recording but want to play live with others online. Can you add any plug in effects to your vocals in a live situation?
Sure. But you would have to route the output of your DAW into whatever program you are using to stream. OR do it in the streaming program itself. It all depends on what you are using.
Just to get it right: if I'm only recording my voice and want to hear the beat from my daw (through headphones) the only cable going from my laptop to the scarlett is a usb cable. It transfers a signal in and out? Im sorry im a tech noob, but your video was awesome and helpful!
Yes. An audio interface includes something called an A/D and D/A (Analog to Digital and Digital to Analog converter) If you were to plug a guitar into input 1, the pre-amp amplifies the signal and sends it to the converter where the analog sound is turned into digital information sent through the USB cable and recorded in your DAW. But of course we (humans) can't HEAR digital (numbers/0s & 1s) so the sound from the DAW is sent back to the audio interface via the USB cable where it turns that digital information back into analog sound that we can hear through headphones or speakers. The analog signal is essentially electrical impulses (from the interface) that cause speakers to move and create sound waves that then hit our ear drums causing the same vibration of the eardrums based on the frequency of the waveform. This eardrum vibration is then converted to electrical impulses by the auditory nerve that our brains can understand as sound, words, music, melody, notes/pitch, etc... TL;DR Yes, all you need is the USB cable. If you want to hear sound though, you must have headphones or speakers connected to the audio interface.
I still don't get the sound in playback, scarlett 2i2 is set up both in playback & recording sound setting. What should I do then in routing focusrite on my windows? Thank you
So i bought my interface on Ebay it came and btw it was already used and i tried to out the bundle code and it said bundle code was already used is it another way to install it without using a bundle code
Great comprehensive review, Brian. Am I correct in thinking that the second channel on this model can produce phantom power as well for a second condenser microphone.
Most artist record while their studio monitors are on. Whatever is going through the daw also comes out through the monitors at the same time. Can you do that with this interface
Hmmm, well it depends what they are recording. No one records in the same room with a microphone and their monitors ON as that creates a feedback loop. But you could record other non-mic'ed things. You can record, say a keyboard and have the monitors on and hear everything.
Sure you can do that, or just use headphones and turn the monitors down. When you have a microphone, it picks up everything. So if you have a mic plugged in to the interface and your monitors are on to hear your voice, the chain goes like this - Voice into mic which runs into the interface, then the voice comes out of the interface from your speakers. That sound gets picked up by the microphone again and goes back into the interface. The same sound comes out again and gets picked up by the mic again which feeds back into the interface again, and this continues forever. It's called a "feedback loop" Some microphones are more directional and reject more feedback than others, but any microphone can feedback if the source is loud enough. Generally, condenser mics will be more susceptible to feedback, where dynamic mics are less sensitive and more directional so they reject sound from the sides and rear, which is why you usually see dynamic mics in a live situation on stage. You may be able to be in the same room with your monitors on and use a dynamic mic like the SM58 if you are far enough away from the monitors. But generally, in a studio setting, you want the cleanest audio possible which is why the singer would be using headphones instead of a loud speaker to hear themselves.
You need to get your DAW to recognize your focusrite as an input. Once you have that set up you should be able to select that input and record it/edit it however you like
@@sumankurapati7984 I personally am not sure what DAW they use for their product. I use FL Studio myself for all of my recordings, but I know they use a free software for this
Hi:) I noticed in the comments that you know how to have effects on your voice while recording. Could you make a video explaining the process with the Scarlett 2i2? Thank you!
Just put the effects on the track in your DAW, and monitor through the DAW. Make sure the Direct Monitor is off. You may have latency though depending on the plugins.
You don't need a code for the driver. It is unlikely the code would work assuming the original buyer registered the unit. You just won't have access to the free plugins.
I have the exact hardware as shown, had it for a year or so with no problems, then I moved and left it in storage for about a month, after which connecting it all back up again. However, now all my audio that ISN’T my live feed voice, is terrible. My music sounds distorted from its original sound, RUclips videos are also distorted/cracking. I’ve made sure the drivers are updated, I’ve made sure my audio settings in my DAW (FL studio 20) are set to the “Focusrite USB” and I’ve made sure my audio settings in my control panel are set accordingly as well... AND I’ve tweaked with every knob I could and I still have terrible audio. 😔
What's your opinion in buying a very lightly used like new Focusrite 2i2 on Facebook? What should I check to make sure everything is working well. Is it worth to buy this if there is a $60-80 reduction on price or to go buy a new one spending that extra money without taking any risk. Can you please explain the possible downside on such a purchase. So I can decide if should spend that extra dollars and buy a brand new one. Thanks. Awaiting your response
Hello. Thanks so much for the information. I have the same one too. But I couldn't be sure of something. When recording an acoustic guitar with a condenser microphone, should we set the button of the channel to which we connect the microphone to "line" or "inst"?
Hi there! I have a question and I really hope that you will see this (and reply! ;-) ) because I've asked this question in various different forums but nobody has answered or those who did just told me to get a different audio interface, one with a _send & return_ loop. I hope that _you_ can help! _(It's long, so bear with me...)_ So, here's my situation: I have a microphone, an external compressor (a dbx 166) and a small Behringer USB mixer that I use as my audio interface, as it has a USB port. I'm not very happy with the mixer because, even with the gain turned down, it has quite a bit of floor noise. So I've been looking around and I think that the Scarlett 2i2 would be perfect for what I do/need. At the moment, the way I connect everything goes like this: - Microphone into the compressor - From the compressor into the mixer - From the mixer into my computer I know, this is not ideal, to use the compressor's make-up gain as my mic pre-amp. The Scarlett, from what I've read, has great pre-amps and great converters, so I'd like to use the Scarlett not only as my audio interface but also as my mic pre-amp. The question is: how can I use my compressor in this case? Since the Scarlett 2i2 has 2 seperate inputs, I was thinking about the following but I'm not sure if this would work (hence this question to you). Here's the idea: - Microphone into the 1st input of the Scarlett - From the Line Out of the Scarlett into the Compressor - From the compressor into the 2nd input of the Scarlett - Finally, from the USB output of the Scarlett into my computer and in my DAW, only select the signal coming from the 2nd input. Would this work? My fear is that what comes back from the compressor into the 2nd input, that that signal will also go out through the Line Out, back into the compressor and create a feedback. Is there a way to seperate what comes out through the Line Out? For example, the 1st input comes out on the left side of the line out and the 2nd on the right side? Can you do that on the Scalett 2i2? OK, this was long but I wanted you to know all the details and what I was thinking about, so that you could tell me what you think. Thanks for reading all this!
My advice would be the same as what you have already heard. Get a different interface with proper inserts. I would also re-think using the external compressor. Will a plugin compressor not work? Is it a high-end vintage compressor?
@@BenoniStudio The compressor, it's one of the cheapest I could find, so no, it's not some valuable vintage piece of gear. When I bought the compressor, all I had was a digital 8-track recorder by Tascam. I didn't have a computer, so I recorded everything using my digital recorder only, so I had to get it right on the way in. I still do that to record the music but now that i have a laptop, I find it easier to record the vocals on a computer. I can add delay, reverb and if I need to cut or replace a part, it's a lot easier to do that in a DAW. Now that I have a laptop, actually, I use both: the external compressor on the way in, just to make sure that the volume doesn't go too high or too low. The compressor also has a gate and it works very well to get rid of some noise (like when my neighbours decide to start their washing machine or whatever just when I'm about to record vocals!). Then, after I've recorded, I use a plugin compressor to get an even more even volume. This has worked just fine so far but my problem is when I record something at a very low volume, something like almost whispering, that's when you notice the mixer's floor noise and this is the main reason why I'm thinking about getting the Scarlett 2i2. Thank you for taking the time to read my question and for your reply! I appreciate that!
6:45 maybe I'm just confused but why would you want to do this optional step? Will this step make it so that if I connect a synth to the audio interface, connect that audio interface to my computer, and connect the audio interface to external speakers, I can hear EVERYTHING from the speakers - both the synth and whatever I'm playing on my DAW, etc? For context, I only have one set of speakers through which I would like to hear everything.
I keep getting this error: There was an error when closing the file "C;\ users\ early\ OneDrive\Documents\ Ableton\ Live recordings\ Temp-8 Project \samples ecorded \ 1 Audio 0001 [2020-07-14 174509]. wav" I keep getting this error in Ableton.. I can't record or anything...can you help?
Looks like your are attempting to launch/save/grab a file from your cloud (OneDrive is Microsofts' cloud storage). Maybe try saving whatever that audio file is locally. Or point/change your default save file to local storage and not cloud.
Would you always need to use the interface when using Audio for your computer, eg if I wanted to watch videos would I need to turn it on so that the audio gets output to the monitors
You do not have the use the 2i2 as the audio interface for your computer. You can use it as the interface for your DAW, and the built-in interface for your computer.
some amps provide a direct out, but then you would need an IR loader for the cabinet unless that is included in the amp output. Generally you would put a microphone on a cabinet and record that. or just plug directly into your interface and use an amp plugin
Hi.. I bought that interface recently, and I have this question: Using a condenser microphone, the selector should be on "Line" or "Inst" position? Thanks!.. Great tutorial!!
Beautiful video! I need a help. Whenever I record guitar on FL studio it will record also the metronome, how can I do to just hear it with the headphones plugged into the scarlet but not record it?
Great video. I was wondering what you would recommend for me, the solo or 2i2. I am going to be rapping and using an XLR mic. I don’t really need multiple inputs for guitar/multiple mics. However, is the audio quality difference worth the money difference?
There won't be a difference in audio quality, but you between those two options I would go with the 2i2. That second mic pre-amp will come in handy and the cost difference is slight.
It depends on what you need. Most MIDI gear today can be plugged in via USB. I haven't used MIDI cables in years. My controller or MIDI keyboard get plugged directly into a USB port so no need for the MIDI ports on my interface. But if you have MIDI gear that needs MIDI ports, then I would go for the 2i4 or similar. Check out the PreSonus Studio C series as well. They are pretty nice too. As long as you are laying down the cash you might want to at least consider the 6i6 the new 4i4 or PreSonus 68c
It's pretty much the same except the pre-amps have a lot more available gain. I'd choose this or the 6i6 over the KA6 for anyone looking for a new small interface.
hello, I planning to buy this. but one question, if you plugged in your headphones and line outputs to speakers at the same time, sound from the pc will come to headphones and line outputs too?
I’ve had one of these for over a year now, and still not got beyond the registration part. Did get to the bit you showed with the choice of pianos but if this down loaded I’ve got no idea where, and the icon never appeared on my desktop. Whole thing is really complicated and disappointing. Will try and run this vid on my iPad while I try to load stuff on my laptop, but not holding my breath.

Hello BenoniStudio, I own a Fractal Audio AX8 which has its own amp/effects modeling. How would I connect the AX8 so I am not using the amp modeling etc which I believe the DAW has (e.g.. ProTools first). I am considering buying the 2i2 or the 6i6 which doesn't seem to be on Focusrite website. Is the AX8 (preset) used as a plugin on the Focusrite? Since the AX8 costs over $1K I would think it has better amp and effects modeling than what comes with the ProTools First? Not sure how and what cables to connect guitar -> AX8 -> Focusrite -> to PC (windows). I also have powered monitor which has XLR. AX8 has both XLR and regular guitar cables.

Thank you 🎉 merry Christmas 🎉
Just to get it right: if I'm only recording my voice and want to hear the beat from my daw (through headphones) the only cable going from my laptop to the scarlett is a usb cable. It transfers a signal in and out? Im sorry im a tech noob, but your video was awesome and helpful!
Yes. An audio interface includes something called an A/D and D/A (Analog to Digital and Digital to Analog converter)
If you were to plug a guitar into input 1, the pre-amp amplifies the signal and sends it to the converter where the analog sound is turned into digital information sent through the USB cable and recorded in your DAW.
TL;DR
Yes, all you need is the USB cable. If you want to hear sound though, you must have headphones or speakers connected to the audio interface.
@@BenoniStudio Big thanks man. This explanation is exactly what i've been looking for!
Interesting thanks appreciate it very much
Thanks for the detailed info. It helps-a lot!

So i bought my interface on Ebay it came and btw it was already used and i tried to out the bundle code and it said bundle code was already used is it another way to install it without using a bundle code
If you're talking about the drivers, you can download them from the focrusrite website.
Does that 9 string djent?
Hi, Thanks for video. One question- can I plug my Rega planar turntable into this guy & put my vinyl onto my pc to then edit on audacity? Thanks .👍🏆
Great comprehensive review, Brian. Am I correct in thinking that the second channel on this model can produce phantom power as well for a second condenser microphone.
Yes. Both inputs have Phantom 👍
@@BenoniStudio Thank you
Most artist record while their studio monitors are on.
@@BenoniStudio what if they record with a microphone in a separate room
Sure you can do that, or just use headphones and turn the monitors down. When you have a microphone, it picks up everything. So if you have a mic plugged in to the interface and your monitors are on to hear your voice, the chain goes like this - Voice into mic which runs into the interface, then the voice comes out of the interface from your speakers. That sound gets picked up by the microphone again and goes back into the interface. The same sound comes out again and gets picked up by the mic again which feeds back into the interface again, and this continues forever. It's called a "feedback loop"
Some microphones are more directional and reject more feedback than others, but any microphone can feedback if the source is loud enough.

You need the ASIO driver for this interface to work correctly (on Windows). Why can't you install the driver?
Is this also usable for DJ-Controllers?
when I restart it doesnt do anything after downloading the driver
Could you please make a tutorial on recording electric guitar with scarlett 2i2 ive searched many videos but couldnt find beginner lesson basics
You need to get your DAW to recognize your focusrite as an input. Once you have that set up you should be able to select that input and record it/edit it however you like

Please confirm. FIRST install the drivers, restart computer THEN plug in the Scarlett?
Yes.
What If i bought it 2nd hand. Would the code still works upon registring for installing the driver ?

It sounds like you have a Sample Rate mis-match
It won't make any difference. Those buttons are for the 1/4" input. The XLR/mic input will automatically be MIC level.
Hi there! I have a question and I really hope that you will see this (and reply! ;-) ) because I've asked this question in various different forums but nobody has answered or those who did just told me to get a different audio interface, one with a _send & return_ loop. I hope that _you_ can help!
_(It's long, so bear with me...)_
So, here's my situation:
I have a microphone, an external compressor (a dbx 166) and a small Behringer USB mixer that I use as my audio interface, as it has a USB port.
I'm not very happy with the mixer because, even with the gain turned down, it has quite a bit of floor noise. So I've been looking around and I think that the Scarlett 2i2 would be perfect for what I do/need.
At the moment, the way I connect everything goes like this:
- Microphone into the compressor
- From the compressor into the mixer
- From the mixer into my computer
I know, this is not ideal, to use the compressor's make-up gain as my mic pre-amp.
Here's the idea:
- Microphone into the 1st input of the Scarlett
- From the Line Out of the Scarlett into the Compressor
- From the compressor into the 2nd input of the Scarlett
- Finally, from the USB output of the Scarlett into my computer and in my DAW, only select the signal coming from the 2nd input.
Very well explained....thanks a ton :)
I keep getting this error:
There was an error when closing the file

Looks like your are attempting to launch/save/grab a file from your cloud (OneDrive is Microsofts' cloud storage). Maybe try saving whatever that audio file is locally. Or point/change your default save file to local storage and not cloud.
Thank you so much brotha really helped me out
Thank you and very helpful
What is DAW? What is studio monitors? Can I download the driver without registration? What is ASIO?
Would you always need to use the interface when using Audio for your computer, eg if I wanted to watch videos would I need to turn it on so that the audio gets output to the monitors
You do not have the use the 2i2 as the audio interface for your computer. You can use it as the interface for your DAW, and the built-in interface for your computer.
@@BenoniStudio how do you do this
thanks. interesting. I thought I'd plug my guitar into my amp, get the effects I want, then plug in the amp to the interface, no?
some amps provide a direct out, but then you would need an IR loader for the cabinet unless that is included in the amp output. Generally you would put a microphone on a cabinet and record that. or just plug directly into your interface and use an amp plugin
Hi.. I bought that interface recently, and I have this question:
Using a condenser microphone, the selector should be on "Line" or "Inst" position?
Thanks!.. Great tutorial!!
It doesn't matter. For XLR you are using the mic pre-amps. Line or Instrument is for the 1/4 input. There is no effect on the XLR input.

Great video, I thought it was just plug in and play. Not surprisingly it hasnt worked
BenoniStudio would a 2i4 be even better? Since it has MIDI input as well
It depends on what you need.
Great video, does it sound better than the Komplete audio 6?
It's pretty much the same except the pre-amps have a lot more available gain. I'd choose this or the 6i6 over the KA6 for anyone looking for a new small interface.
excellent tutorial. thanks
hello, I planning to buy this. but one question, if you plugged in your headphones and line outputs to speakers at the same time, sound from the pc will come to headphones and line outputs too?
Believe so. My homie has a headphone splitter coming out the headphone jack, and two speakers plugged into the back. Both work at the same time.

You would take the main outs into a line input of your Focusrite. Or SPDIF if it has that.
@@BenoniStudio Thanks so much for your reply. Sorry to bother you as I am a novice. 1. How would I be able to use the amp modeling in my fractal audio AX8. 2. my mic is a dynamic mic sm58 vs condenser mic. will that work and does the 6i6 have a preamp built in? 3. how do I connect my powered monitor to the foucusrite 6i6? 4. what is the best approach to listen to my friends vocals track and then record a guitar track on top of it? I guess I can't do #3 and #4 at the same time.
Guitar in to AX8, Main Output to Scarlett Line in. Create a track in your DAW with proper input channels.
2. 6i6 has 2 mic pre-amps on the front. They will work with ANY XLR mic.
3. Connect monitors to the rear LINE OUTPUTS using 1/4" TRS cables.
4. Import the vocal track into your DAW. Play your guitar along with the track.
If I buy one used, will that affect my registration process since the previous owner would have already registered it under their name?
Yes. You can't register something that's already been registered. So you won't get the free stuff.
