Definitely not Battel of Corin, plus in Sisterhood of Dune, Valya's role is not so pronounced as the narration implies. Makes one wonder how much they'll stick to the source material. Maybe
I'm proud for Emily Watson. For years, she has consistently give good performances throughout her incredible career beginning with Lars Von Trier's Breaking The Waves, she never missed a beat when it comes to her acting skills. In my opinion, she's one of the most underrated acting legend of all time so to see her leading the Dune series is absolutely incredible. Go Emily!!! 🙌🙌🙌
Well Frank's son did write those books if you want to read them (or listen to them). It even covers the Bulterian Jihad. They are nowhere near as good as Frank's writing though.
Exploring post- Butlerian Jihad history by depicting the rise of each of the major forces in the Dune universe is a great expanded universe strategy. After the sisterhood, I'd love to see the Mentats, Spacing Guild, Ixians, and Tleilaxu given their own series (maybe the last 2 share a series?).
I loved the new Dune, but I've read the book and seen the Lynch version several times so I understood the stuff they didn't explain. I wish they'd explained the Butlerian Jihad and what Mentats, the tattoo of imperial conditioning, etc. just so newcomers would find it more accessible. I also missed the narration of inner monologue like Lynch.
You're not going to see any of that. Even though those previously mentioned groups are just as interesting they don't fit the "popular politics" of today. Just imagine what type of backlash there would be if a movie showed the average Tleilaxu female's life as a quadriplegic birthing chamber in a tube 🤣.
@@halfbakedvidja They don't want to give the audience explanation. They want to SELL FEELS. Girlboss is hot right now and that's the only reason this is being made. The history of the Butlerian Jihad isn't.

While it didn't do well in theaters it still has a cult following. It wasn't the greatest at all, don't get me wrong, but it did some things right that other adaptations failed in.
0:57 so that's how everything started, with a sister of the Bene Gesserit part of the Harkonnen's. I hope this prequel explain how it started the conflict between House Harkonnen and House Atreides
The atreides and Herkommen have already been at each others throats for about 150 years at the time of this show. The feud began at the Battle of Corrin, where Vorian Atreides banished Abulurd Harkonnen for cowardice. Vorian wanted the attack the planet head on, knowing that the billions of hostages would die, but Abulurd stoped that from happening
@@liampugh although Brian and Kevin have thoroughly desecrated Frank Herbert’s universe with all their retconning, the family feud lasting 10k years is one of the sillier things that was there from the very first book.
You want to produce a show or series with strong female characters that people can enjoy and get behind, this is how you do it, where it naturally exists without changing law and publications that existed for centuries. Can't wait. Well done HBO!
The question is how faithful to the books will this be? Will we have Norma Cenva show up? The Swordmasters of Ginaz? Raquella Anirul? Gilbertus Albans?
I think Norma might appear, but Raquella and Gilbertus won't. In fact, the series begin with Valya already as Mother Superior, having succeeded Raquella and killed Dorotea.
Well, they kind of have a history... The Wire, Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Band of Brothers, The Pacific, Deadwood, Succession, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Game of Thrones, Angels in America, Silicon Valley, Big Little Lies, The White Lotus, The Jinx, Big Love, True Detective...
I'm a little surprised that technology/society/family names haven't changed AT ALL in 10,000 years, but this is the duniverse so who knows what's possible
I also dont like that in worldbuilding when it comes to these books, like Asoiaf for example. But in Dune, it's actually a main theme explicitly told by Herbert. The first 10k years humanity explored and advanced beyond imagination. Then, after the Butlerian Jihad and the rebellion of machines, the Corrino Empire was stablished and the human civilization got limited by a feudal system. Thats why the next 10k years humanity embrace stagnation, a state of no exploration or evolution beyond spice, a state that would cause extinction. Thats why Leto II did what he did, the Golden Path, opress humanity for centuries so one day, the whole race would want anything but opression, embracing liberty and curiosity to expand beyond imagination, for humanity to reach eternity, to grow in trillions and live forever
In a society such as this it doesn't surprise me that they've kept their family names. It's clear that these family's hold an immense amount of power and history, and changing that name would separate them from that heritage.
I’m not gonna lie, the color grading is off, the blocking and set design seems a decent bit different than the films, and the cinematography is also a bit different. This doesn’t have to mean bad news, but I’d love to hope you guys pull through with this. Lots of potential and I do hope Denis was present on set as a producer. Absolutely love that there were no leaks. Can’t wait to see more!!

Please stop using “aesthetic” as an adjective in that way. You’re basically saying it looks so atmospheric and style, which makes no sense. If you are using it as an adjective, it still makes no sense because it requires more context. “It looks so atmospheric and a sense of beauty” means nothing without more context.
@@korvo3427 Aesthetic doesn’t mean stylish. It means of a particular style. There are aesthetically pleasing things and aesthetically displeasing things.
I barely remember the source material but to my understanding technology is pretty stagnant due to weird AI fears. Mentats are used for calculating and spice is used for space travel because they'd rather use precognitive powers to navigate over a powerful computer.
The whole point of the books is that the Human Universe has been in stagnation the last 10.000 years before Leto II's rule and it's heading to extinction. Thats why Paul wants to start and later His son, the God Emperor, finishes the Golden Path, the inhuman project that would have humanity live forever across eternity.

as much as i want more dune i do feel its too early for a tv series. mainly due to the fact that when they were making this show i don't think they understood how massively beloved the look and feel of denis dune would become (i understand denis and jon are producers but they were knee deep in developing part two when this was being created). i do think given how this is 10,000 years prior to the films that it should feel and look different in ways due to being a different age but the scale, pacing, editing, and overall flow of the show needs to mimic denis films. hopefully the official trailer will be different but this teaser makes it look and feel more like a generic scifi show with a dune skin to me unfortunately, hoping its just the editing of the teaser. hope to being proven wrong and still can't wait to witness this.
I felt the same, the new Dune movies have such a unique atmosphere whereas this looks visually the same as lots of other shows like Foundation, Rings of Power, etc
Hey kayefbutterfly, Why are we getting soo many good shows in these few months. Fallout tv series came out last month, and then now we are getting dune tv series.and house of dragons s2. And also rings of power s2. But im not hyped or excited for that shoe because the first season according to many say it sucked. But theres been a dune tv series before. In the early 2000’s right?
Considering this is based on a series of books not written by Frank Herbert, which the fan community largely considers poorly written, I'm not sure who this is for.
For most of the Brian Herbert books, the story was OK - how the story was written sucked. A TV series drawing from the books is fine, because then the TV writers will hopefully make that story better.
@@historicarmourer I'm not so sure it worked *with* Villeneuve. It was very pretty, had very good sound, and I suppose there were thopters and worms, but...well, Dune isn't thopters and worms.
Dune stopped being about the writing when they cut out half the plot points in part 2 and changed them in part 1, now it is all just empty "cinematic" slop that looks pretty. Enjoy.
@@t2nexx561people are really mixed on it. It has some good elements, but it often makes some bizarre choices in changing the lore, and has inconsistent quality in cinematography.

According to the source material (Sisterhood of Dune), the Butlerian movement was destroying leftovers of machines and computers at that time and it was a big problem for the new Imperium because they were too violent (they killed any person who still used machines). I think it would be interesting to see that.

Well Frank's son did write those books if you want to read them (or listen to them). It even covers the Bulterian Jihad. They are nowhere near as good as Frank's writing though.
Read the books or do the audiobooks. They have done justice to the source material and considered as such.
They won't....to many straight white men involved "The Message" of Wokesim comes before good story telling

Vorian wanted the attack the planet head on, knowing that the billions of hostages would die, but Abulurd stoped that from happening
this is 10,000 years in the past, I doubt it will have any bearing on the current atreides/harkonnen conflict

They have know idea whom you talking about, the makers never read the books or any source material or they would not makes this series...
HBO is back with this and House of The Dragon? Surely this is easily the most epic streaming service
Scavengers reign and for all mankind are also really good
I'm a little surprised that technology/society/family names haven't changed AT ALL in 10,000 years, but this is the duniverse so who knows what's possible
That's weird to me cause in the books the family names and even the planet names have changed significantly over the coarse of a thousand years
This is the way to get ourselves in trouble by making our own death called
Paul Atreides
Nothing I loved more in the books than see them all fall from grace❤

It doesn’t make sense that they’d have the same technology as the Paul Arteides era, but still looks dope
I barely remember the source material but to my understanding technology is pretty stagnant due to weird AI fears. Mentats are used for calculating and spice is used for space travel because they'd rather use precognitive powers to navigate over a powerful computer.
not sure about this but i heard that ai and mankind had a war and after that nobody made any computers
@@martingenero6328 Yes...the Golden Path is merely the fear of death writ large across the galaxy by one man, Leto II.
@@danielgorda4393yes. Thing is though the Bene Gesserit formed at around the end of the war or right after it. So their technology should not have really regressed yet. Mentats, navigators and the use of spice should be a relatively new thing

as much as i want more dune i do feel its too early for a tv series. mainly due to the fact that when they were making this show i don't think they understood how massively beloved the look and feel of denis dune would become (i understand denis and jon are producers but they were knee deep in developing part two when this was being created). i do think given how this is 10,000 years prior to the films that it should feel and look different in ways due to being a different age but the scale, pacing, editing, and overall flow of the show needs to mimic denis films. hopefully the official trailer will be different but this teaser makes it look and feel more like a generic scifi show with a dune skin to me unfortunately, hoping its just the editing of the teaser. hope to being proven wrong and still can't wait to witness this.

Without Villeneuve, Dune doesn’t work. I hate that they could turn Dune into Game of Thrones in space. Yuck.
I'm reading House Atreides now and actually like it. People are whiny babies.
For most of the Brian Herbert books, the story was OK - how the story was written sucked. A TV series drawing from the books is fine, because then the TV writers will hopefully make that story better.

After the Machine wars human beings started advancing instead of technology which was no longer being so relied on.
According to the source material (Sisterhood of Dune), the Butlerian movement was destroying leftovers of machines and computers at that time and it was a big problem for the new Imperium because they were too violent (they killed any person who still used machines). I think it would be interesting to see that.
