Helen Hayes Honors Assembly 2019 Honors James Casino

At just 19 years old, James was diagnosed with
Guillain-Barre Syndrome
after suffering complications from influenza.
When he was admitted to HHH, he could barely move his body,
was unable to breathe without mechanical ventilation,
and required a G-tube for nutrition. After two months of relentless hard work,
James was breathing on his own, eating a regular diet,
completing self-care tasks with independence,
and was walking on his own.
He was even able to return to college where he is majoring in mathematics!
For his incredible achievements, James was presented with the
Spirit of Achievement Award at the
119th Helen Hayes Hospital Honors Assembly on September 17, 2019
