There is a whole conversation in Black Phone where one of the past victims explains that Ethan Hawk waits for you to try to escape before he kills you.
yeah maybe he did not pay attention because they explain it quite clearly. also ethan´s hawk brother shows up unexpectedly and that also gives finney more time than what the other kids had
Maybe I'm redardy but I thought one of the ghosts said that he waits to lay hands on/beat the captives until they act "naughty" by trying to escape. Wasn't clear to me if that's when he KILLS them, or just hurts them. And what would he do if he kidnapped a pussy who never tried to escape? Keep them for years? And the brother showing up should have incentivized Ethan Hawke to kill Finny SOONER, not keep him around.
My own friends were confused at that part, and while I was able to get it in the moment, I had to really focus to be able to pick it up. It's easy to miss since it's a short dialogue explained in that dead-kid-with-amnesia way. It's also just a weird motivation to begin with. He's just waiting for them to escape so he can punish them, so the main character has to not do that, but since he isn't playing the game, he'll get killed quicker, so he actually should play the game? The whole thing is just very confusing.
...how did you miss this???? The black phone: the reason why he keeps him alive is because he wasn't playing "the game", but the longer he didn't play "the game"( trying to escape) the more the killer was just going to kill him. He needed to try and escape once to actually PROLONG his stay so he had more time to get out. It's a bit convoluted but that's the point. The killer wants the kids to play the "naughty boy game" so he has a reason to ultimately punish and beat them to death.
3:20 I believe the abductor likes to let the children escape the basement and that's when he kills them But I believe Finney escapes the house at one point only to be recaptured so I think there's something about specifically killing the children inside the house.
Yeah, part of his fetish or whatever is punishment. He gives the kids opportunities to try to escape so that he can punish (i.e. torture) them for it and eventually that escalated to murdering them. Knowing how real life serial killers often have processes like this, I didn’t find it unbelievable at all and I thought it gave that character a bit more depth.
@@CourtCjbLand yeah true, but when watching the film myself i felt the same way despite knowing it, it really feels like such a plot convenience "oh he doesnt kill u unless u escape and unless ur specifically in the basement" idk just removed a lot of the tension for me knowing basically nothing was gonna happen to the mc until the big climactic end, but by then you know he's gonna win.

Though I have my issues with the black phone, I do believe they explained the reason for why he was being kept so long in comparison to the other kids. It is mentioned how he wants the main kid to come upstairs when he leaves the door open so he can "play the game" he only does this once, and when he does it starts the game. Once that happens, he's on the same track as the other kids
true, but I think it really just needed more time in the oven. a lot there that felt like it was leading up to some interesting reveal or something genuinely horrific, but the end is just... unsatisfying and a little dumb? YMS summed up a lot of the issues I had but I think with that longer runtime, things could have at least been buttoned up better.
he kept the kid alive that long because he had a ritual or pattern which lead to a game he and the victims would play called bad boy. the kid never did anything the other kids did to initiate the ritual or game. Weed helps.
Personally I think the reason finny lasted so long is because he didn't play along with the "game" and to Ethan hawkes character he was semi "well behaved" and he was waiting for finny to do something or try to escape so he could punish him by beating him or killing him because maybe in his own twisted way it's a way of justifying killing these kids because they are misbehaving and the rules don't really make too much sense besides what the ghost kids tell finny
One of the dead kids on the phone literally tell him that. That he has to play the game in order to move on but he’s not and that’s why Ethan Hawkes character gets frustrated at him and doesn’t kill him for a long time because he wants him to do something wrong. Idk how Ralph missed that scene lol
Just watched it. He did get out using the combo lock and ran down the street then the grabber got him and put him back. Then the next day the grabber dug a hole for finny and got supplies for what he was gonna do.
SPOILER ALERT: I don't want to dogpile here, but there is literal exposition in The Black Phone that answers the question Ralph asked here ("why does the antagonist keep the protagonist alive?"). Legit, the protagonist asks one of the slain children Ralph's exact question, and the child gives an explicit answer ("you have to play the game" or something to that effect). I actually felt this was almost too much of an exposition dump, to be honest, as the explanation could have been visually inferred without any dialogue (which the film also does, so there are actually two answers provided to the audience). Edit: Completely agree that the dialogue between the kids was often a bit questionable.

Black Phone was pretty damn messy. It feels like they left out a ton of backstory and explanation about the actual room just for the sake of making a prequel or something. The kids go from cryptic to comedians and I guess the school just doesn't care about the students in the slightest because we see kids bleeding all over just walking into class the next day without any questioning. The stuff with the sister felt really weird (especially concerning the mom). And I'm extremely tired of the "serial killer is a gay man obsessed with kids" trope. I know Ethan's character wasn't explicitly gay, but the voice and affectations and presentation turns him into a giant stereotype. They were clearly trying to evoke a whole John Wayne Gacy kind of character but it just feels so unnecessary and weirdly offensive. It also stopped being a horror movie pretty quickly and the last line was so corny I genuinely expected the kid to put on sunglasses and for Don't You to start playing over a freeze frame of it. Tl;dr messy as hell, tone is wack, somehow too much and too little exposition. 4/10 coulda been way better.

Hey you won’t see this probably but I am letting you know that even 5 minutes is amazing. I love your content in general and would love to see it more!! Even these quickies give me something good to finally watch after hours of searching.
In the black phone, the only thing I remember is them getting T
they got T in the first few minutes
Low effort comment
