It wasn't perfect but I haven't stopped thinking about it since I left the theater. Bloated for sure but it's peaks are unmatched and it's soooo ambitious. Give it a decade and I think it will be hailed as a classic.
There are so many movies about how great Hollywood is and it makes me wonder if any of these directors have ever actually LIVED in Los Angeles, because it fucking sucks out here. Then I realize, oh of course! You love Hollywood because you got lucky enough/had parents rich and connected enough to become a big successful filmmaker out here! Meanwhile the rest of us working stiffs who know what this city is ACTUALLY like aren’t famous enough to make movies about it, that’s why the most honest portrayals of LA are in noir movies based on novels written by drug addicts or drunks who probably killed themselves because they live in LA.
I think the movie was about Hollywood at the time being magical and innovative but something that would eventually destroy those who were involved. That’s why the only people that survive are the people that leave.
I know this is a well made film, but I still feel mixed on it. For all the brilliance we have come to expect from Chazelle’s work, there were a few awkward choices imo
Ey! Ralph! Appreciate the review, man. Looks fun. Hope you're well. Have a good holiday. Thank you for the years of great, creative videos and insightful reviews. Love yah man! Take care!
What sells the cinematography for me is the 35mm that was used instead of the convential digital camera. It gave the movie a gritty, classic kind of vibe that is sort of missing from films these days.
Explains why despite some questionable choices, I love how Tarantino movies look since he also uses 35mm. I know the drawback is how expensive it is to use, but I have yet to see the best digital cameras and editing to replicate the natural look of film stock.
Babylon's major problem(to me) is that it has trouble staying tonally consistent. It starts off on a good trajectory with the happy side of things and then drifting slowly to darker territory but every time it starts to feel poignant it jerks itself back towards romanticizing things. Sometimes it felt like it was trying to have a serious moment with you only to notice that 15 minutes have gone by and it needs urgently to show you a champagne bottle and a dead rat.
Feel like this film will play out a lot like Wolf of Wall Street or Gatsby in the sense that a lot of viewers will relish/praise the decadence porn and completely miss the point and ignore its flaws.
Even from the trailer, you can tell the film's exquisitely shot and staged. I'm not a huge fan of his stories, but Damien has such a cool, sophisticated command over filmmaking, and you just have to doff your hat.
I'll probably see this after seeing The Whale. I was surprised to see that this film has a three hour runtime! But this being Damien Chazelle, I'm gonna check it out.
This is definitely his weakest movie, but I liked it. The first hour was fucking amazing, but it started falling off the longer it went on. 3+ hours is way too long. I fucking loved the ending though. One thing that stuck with me: after watching Whiplash and La La Land, I left the theater with songs from both movies stuck in my head. When I left this, I had songs from La La Land stuck in my head. I don’t know what relevance that has, but it felt important.
I don't know there's plenty of stories to be told about that section of Hollywood pre-Hayes code before that whole bull crap happened with the Catholic influence on ratings and what could be shown in theaters. Hell I've yet to see a good story with that outside of some books. But honestly have no interest in sitting for another 3-hour movie if I wanted to watch somebody jerk off on screen for 3 hours there's plenty of free options c;
Wolf of Wall Street is amazing, it’s also more consistent. The things is, they are both trying to do different things, I think Babylon is a lot harder to categorize and is more than an outrageous comedy, especially after seeing that ending.
Hey Ralph, I love your old video on Spectre. You broke down the problems with that film incredibly well. Could you do that with No Time To Die? If you didn’t like Spectre you’re gonna hate this film. It’s so bad it makes Spectre seem great.
It’s not for most people it’s for lovers of cinema who know who Griffith, Keaton, Welles, Capra, Ford, Hawks, Walsh, Cukor, Ray, Fuller, Peckinpah, Altman, Bogdanovich are and they’re the primary audience. They might not even like the film, but they’ll get it.
He sounds really convinced when he said it was fun and he had a good time
Yeah just like the "loving tribute" to Fatty Arbuckle...
I’ve always wanted a movie where samara weaving and Margot Robbie interact, because they look identical, and now we have that
It flopped
@@anti-satanpro-life8531 ok, does that change is point? Lol
Their scenes together were really fucking funny too I enjoyed their parts (the scenes where they were arguing with each other)
Margot Robbie is 10x hotter but 🤷🏻
They sort of favor each other, like maybe they could be sisters or something. Not identical. Why does everyone have to be so hyperbolic all the time?

Chazelle’s parents are educators and lived in New Jersey… So you’re completely off from the second paragraph on.
i think out of many hollywood worship films this one shows alot of the dark side of it and how it affects people
I think the movie was about Hollywood at the time being magical and innovative but something that would eventually destroy those who were involved. That’s why the only people that survive are the people that leave.
Wait wait wait, stop. Damien Chazelle likes JAZZ???
Tobey Maguire 100% got this role because of the Spoils of Babylon.
He was one of the producers, pretty sure that's what got him the role, haha
I know this is a well made film, but I still feel mixed on it. For all the brilliance we have come to expect from Chazelle’s work, there were a few awkward choices imo
Just saw it today. It’s very crazy! I was speechless.
I’d definitely recommend it for sure, but the ending was so bizarre to me. Still tho…a very ambitious and entertaining film!
I enjoyed it,it was unique and crude yet beautiful and ambitious.I'll remember it unlike this marvel garbage we've been getting for the past 2 years.
@@naujie7986 I agree you with you all the way
Since it’s about the roaring 20’s obviously they had to incorporate avatar
At the very fucking least, it was nice to see Tobey Macguire again.

After my second viewing I have to say it’s definitely one of the best new modern epics. A rare story in four acts.
When is Hollywood gonna realize that average joe and jane don't care about old Hollywood?
You can make a good movie about nearly anything. It is all about the execution...
Only thing I care about is poontang
Speak for yourself, moron
I keep seeing these comments. I’m interested in the movie because of the director
No one should
Absolutely loved it. Would rather this than Avatar, which only appeals visually and nothing else.
What sells the cinematography for me is the 35mm that was used instead of the convential digital camera. It gave the movie a gritty, classic kind of vibe that is sort of missing from films these days.
Nothing gritty looking or classic about this post modern bullshit.
Try watching seven ups or to live and die in LA.

Will you still be doing your best and worst for the year? T.V wise, I highly recommend Severance.

Literally was exactly that
The decadence of these films is literally what they expect to get people in and watch it lol

The opening scene alone is 30 minutes long. Seriously.
I guess it wanted to represent cocaine: a quick hit, pretty colors, forget about it the next day.
I took it more of Day of the Locust, as it’s also about the depths of old Hollywood (sexism, racism, violence, etc)
Babylon had way too much going on, I actually thought it was pretty bad tbh. Lots of great pieces but nothing putting them together
Definitely not better than Whiplash or La La Land, but this was a really fun time, even with the 3 hour runtime
Merry Xmas and keep up the good work!!
The thing that's confused me most about this movie is why I was seeing a trailer for it before Strange World. That still makes no sense to me.
Question is, do I see this before The Whale or after

My favorite part of the movie is when Brad Pitt said "Its Babylonin time" and Babyloned all over those guys
Damien Chazelle make a movie that isn’t about Hollywood challenge (impossible)

He made whiplash and First Man
