I can still recall as a teenager being given a ride in one first 3000 GT's. At the time it was the fastest car I had ever been in. It made such an impression that I later owned 7 MK2 and MK3 3.0 litre Capri's and then a 2.8 injection.
I had a mk 1 capri when i was 18yrs old and bought it in the dark...next morning i woke up and looked out my bedroom window to find it was 5 different colours lol...had it resprayed midnight blue and bottom half stratus silver....even had matching fluffy dice (they were fashionable then)...i then stupidly after a few years traded it in for a TR7 .. How i long for my old Capri back, best car i ever owned and a definate bird puller....
Soon as i passed my test bought a MK 1,white with black vinyl roof , thought i was a rite cool dude cruising down cleethorpes promenade with windows down and radio cassette on full blast (lol).
Had a white 1974 1600GT as my first car in 1982. Insurance was just £85 (unbelievable). Ran it for 2+ years. What a great looking car, and fun to drive. Thanks for the memory 🙂
In the US, my 1st car, was 74' Capri, 4 speed, 2000 cc German engine model, in that orange.. I loved that thing, in 1983-84, I 🤔 thought I was the Sultan Siam, cruising around Northeast Philadelphia in a car nobody recognized at the time... I would up, owning 6 or 7 more over my 20's.. Great segment guys.... Thanks ...
This car had an enormous number of engine and gearbox combinations engineered into it. Don't forget there were two parallel offerings on the market - U.K. and Germany. I worked at Ford at the time and could never work out if it was the U.K. Essex V6 or the Taunus one. Mine was a 1600GT XLR in white with the black hood and trunk lid. I still miss it.
The Mk 1 3000E facelift variant ( 4 headlamps ) along with the highly desirable RS 3.1 were the best Capri's ever made by far! also the use of the 'Bullet' soundtrack was perfect!!
I loved my capri 2.2 l silver, black vinyl roof. A beautiful 6 piston V--engine running 'as soft as in the morning sunrise' had no trouble in winter -20' . The motor sound was awsome.
A great bit of automotive history and a awesome looker,my first car was a facelift 1600 GT XLR in Ermine white black vinyl roof. I kept that car for 7 years the longest I've ever kept a car, wish I still had it, a design classic 👍
My Dad bought me a 1970 1600 GTXLR, white with the black vinyl roof, 2 days before I passed my driving test. The first my best mate knew of me learning to drive was when I pulled up at the garage where he worked as an apprentice and said "Put 3 quids worth in." I only had the car for 2 years but, when I look back on those halcyon, always, it seems, summer days, it is always right there in my golden memories. That was 43 years ago now and I still miss that car. Happy, happy days.
The first generation cars were much prettier. I don't recall seeing many of the later ones with the ugly tail lights here in Australia. I know we sold them, but I don't think they sold as well as the earlier cars did. I think most of the Capris here in Aust have been V8 swapped. No one seemed to have bothered modifying the V6's when V8's were so easy to get and fitted in so nicely. Perfect bay for a Windsor
My big brother's first car was a 1973 Mercury Capri. He bought it in 1979 when he was 16. I was 10. It was really cool. Orange with black interior, and he added wheel flares with front and rear spoilers. It looked really slick when it was done. I can't remember if it was a stick, and I can't ask him because he died of a bad heart in 2015. GRHS😔 It was badged Mercury, not Ford.
In early 80's I had a 1969 1600GT Ohv in Sable brown, with tan interior. Rostyle wheels. Put driving lamps and fog lamps on it. 1st gear died on the first date with new girlfriend ( now wife for 35years ), spent 2 weeks staying away from hills. Got a replacement gearbox and new girlfriend came up to help me fit it. She was inside the car with a rope around the gearbox helping me put it into place. She should have run then. We have done lots of car work since then
This is great! ( The orange 2 litre ( v4) Gt in the thumbnail is the exact model I had as my first Capri. I was hooked after that and had four more eventually , all Ghia versions with the 2 litre Pinto lump. Thank you for sharing!
I had a '69 2 litre gt, in red with a matt black bonnet. Which after all these years, thanks to this post, may have been factory! This was in '78 and it was a rust bucket then. Cool though. A mustang for the Brits!
I had a 1973 Capri GXL 3 litre V6....Metallic Copper with white vinyl roof.....I was only 21 at the time....What a car, it needed a 5 speed box though, way undergeared for all that torque. 4 headlamp limited edition model, German built....What a car, chick magnet....lol.
Loved mine, I had a 69 GT XLR 3000. kept it for ten years then sold it to a guy in Leicester, it needed al lot of TLC by then. It was Orchid pink, TBE 210 H.
My brother had a mk1 1600 gt xlr red with black vinyl roof and period rostyles early 90s such a cool car hard to find a good example now in nz ,luving the bullet soundtrack you gotta luv fast fords
In 1971 the Capri v8 Perana was launched in South Africa. Colours were red and yellow. Two racing stripes in black were painted on. These ran on either side of the body from back to front across the bonnet. Bonett also had a dome or buldge. The automatic version added a beautiful Jericho sounds from the twin exhausts when gears changed. An option existed to have your car tuned by Basil Green a Ford specialist who would then allocate a number to your car with his signature. A new Perana sold for 5,000 rand in 1971.
I had a 300GXL when I was 20, far to young for such a powerful car at the time. Inevitably I wrapped it round a lamp post and wrote it off. I should've put a couple of bags of cement in the boot.
GREAT music choice for a GREAT video - LOVED it! A 'wide boy' farmer's son in our village had a Capri - souped-up and rusty as hell, in which he would roar around the lanes. He had 'Dixie' as his air-horn but the motor never had quite enough power to get to the end of the tune - hilarious, but frightening if you came across him after he'd been to the pub! He died prematurely at 50 so I'm glad he had his fun. Mad Mick we'd call him.
I was gutted when the Capri was released, as I had just recently bought my Fiat Coupe, having sold my '66 Cortina GT! Didn't even know about it, in advance, as we didn't have "jungle drums" like today! Couldn't trade out of it, but made it up later when I got my 3000E.... Dark green metallic, with an all colour keyed turquoise interior, and rear window louvres added by me....lol
My Dad used to like going to our local Ford dealer and driving a couple of the new Fords and when the Capri came out I was old enough to have my license so I drove one...we both thought it drove very well.
steve Fowler iv had capris every day for the last 31 years and have a 1.6L a 2.8i for 26 years plus a 3000 GT Mk1 touring car replica, blue and white and box arches.
Great video, putty you never put the one I owned new in 74 3000 Ghia great tow car crap at going round corners but I loved it, it's hard even to see a picture of one these days.
I had quite a few luckily 3.0S mk2 and mk3 and a 2.8 injection only had 2 mk1 s a yellow 3000E black vinyl roof k reg and a white 1600 m reg which was a rs 3100 copy including boot lid , the 3 litre Capri ,s were brilliant nice sound drive etc good old days !!!
Even though I'm a die hard Holden man- these Capri's are awesome! I'd sell both my VC and VH Commodores for one with a good body and was V8 swapped Capri already. Parana's are just too rare and hard to find. You'd be devaluing it modifying it the way I would want it with tubs in the rear and a decent ANDRA 7.5 second approved 'cage. A full Pro Street inspired build is what I would want to do with one of these. It might not be the "in" trend today, but I think Pro Street rocks!!! Everything should be tubbed, 'caged and wheelie bar equipped and have stupid power. Haha, my daily runs 10's on low boost (21psi). When my meth injection kit arrives from Summit Racing I'll wind it up to the 40spi the motor was built for and shoot for 9's. It'll still be my daily though, doing it for Dale on the daily... ;)
OK, I know it:s not pretty, but I owned a 1974 blue /silver capri in 1978 (cool Car) It had a 2.8 liter V6 made in Germany by BMW it was an awesome car and fast!!!! Mine had the shame of having rubber bumpers. I cant find a damn site that will show them. It must be the Herpes of it:s past. Rock on Capri lovers!!! Rock on.......But don:t be ashamed..It:s OK
One of the few British Fords seen in American roads . They did well with women but the guys had big blocks available and didn't give this car much notice .
I think Ford hadn't even thought about selling just one capri in the US..bc Mustang. If i was an American and had lived in that time, I'd be like "Why buy the 'european fake' Mustang, when you can have the real one?"
Always loved the sporty and smallish more sports car look of these compared to the mustangs here in the US. My fave was a 74 w/a 2.0L SOHC engine. In the 5yrs I owned it it went from a sporty lil runabout to a snarly, high revving, super bike sounding engined car w/vastly improved suspension that made it handle like a slot car. definitely one of my favorite cars I ever owned.
My first proper car was a used metallic blue with black vinyl roof Capri 1600 L....when I went to the Ford used car dealer to pick it up there was a 1600 GT XLR in the showroom which wasnt there when I initially went to see the 1600 L....the salesman in no way would allow me to change as all the paper work etc had been done also he was,nt the salesman for the GT XLR so his commision would be affected....what a loss for me....but that 1600 L lasted me for years without any problems except the stupid headlight switch going on fire. My second Capri was a Black 70 2000 GTXLR V4 another great car...then a 74 RS 3100 written off...and lastly the 2.8 injection converted to Tickford...all were great cars and cheap to buy and cheap to run.

Facelift 72 -73 1.6 Capri XL did not come std with GT wheels they had Rostyle type centre wheel trims as std as per 3.37 i only know this because our family had 3 one with vinyl roof M reg and 2 x L reg without but all 1.6 XL models honest i have pics to prove
My dad had a white facelift 1600XL in 1973, brand new, red trim, GKD370L, that came with steel wheels and chrome hub caps (no trim ring) from new. It was his first and only new car, had 3ltr GXL quad lamps fitted after a slight bump but he was disapointed with the lack of performance and bought a 2nd hand 3000E. I went on to have a 3.0GXL, Mk2 3.0S and Mk2 3.0 Ghia.

What model was it, hope it wasn't a GT.
Brad Manchester, a lad had a blue and silver m reg 3 litre in Rochdale in the 80,s nice car !
Very informative video..Thanks for posting.pre face lift all the way.will always be my favourite car.so much fun was had back in the eighties.
Steve McQueen " Bullet" music is spot on for this advert great video well done I love it

When I was a kid my father had a 3000GT in the seventies. Yellow. Now that was a head turner back then I remember! And it could burn rubber!!!
As a young lad I painted my red Mk1 Capri yellow...with a paintbrush, done the bonnet black, looked superb in the rain.
My father told that some tweaks had been done to the engine. I have no idea what, but to me because of that it was a real RACE CAR. :-)
A great bit of automotive history and a awesome looker,my first car was a facelift 1600 GT XLR in Ermine white black vinyl roof.

The Mk 1 was much the prettiest. One of the most beautiful cars of the 1960s.
I agree, the Mk1 had a style the updates were never the same.

Absolutely Luvly video and music. I had the 3000GTXLR.
Great video, very well researched and 'Bullit' overdub really well done.
The RS3100 Mk1 Capri with wide body kit ...if only they built them now!
Finally I understand the early Ford trim levels. I've only known about Popular, L, GL, GLS, Ghia etc, as they were around when I was a kid.
I had a '69 2 litre gt, in red with a matt black bonnet. Which after all these years, thanks to this post, may have been factory! This was in '78 and it was a rust bucket then. Cool though. A mustang for the Brits!

@Sean Gavin Happy to hear that Sean. Take good care of it. Thanks for sharing.
Love the Car & the Music ............
When cars were interesting. Not like today
Anyone else think the "facelift" was more of a "face drop"?
It's got to be an early 3000E for me.
Smaller version of my 69 Mustang ... NIce looking Ford
I had a 300GXL when I was 20, far to young for such a powerful car at the time. Inevitably I wrapped it round a lamp post and wrote it off. I should've put a couple of bags of cement in the boot.
Oops. I live in Texas and my 18 year old has a 5.0 V8 mustang.
In South Africa they dropped a 5.O V8 into the Mk1 Capri and called it the Perana Capri.
Excellent video, thanks
Thank you for the upload
Loved the music.
Music from the Steve McQueen film Bullitt.
It had a great shape !! love the music from "Bullit" the movie the famous car chase scene !!
Is the music at the beginning from Bullitt?
yes
I drove my mates 3000 GT Mark 1. We used to love posing in it.
I love this car

Definitely Nothing wrong with the Fiat Coupe if it was a 124, way better than the Capri in every respect.
That was awesome with that car and that music! James Bond meets Jimi Hendrix lol McQueen from Bullitt right.

I always loved the look of the Capri, I wanted to buy a second hand 2.3 V6 GL in the mid 80's but I let the wife talk me out of it, still regret that!
Nice video thank you...😊
THE BEST EUROPIAN SPORT FORD 4EVER !!!
The music from.Bullitt...
wish i kept mine
Great video, putty you never put the one I owned new in 74 3000 Ghia great tow car crap at going round corners but I loved it, it's hard even to see a picture of one these days.
The 3 litre s is the one
the rs 3100 came into being by a cock up at the engine plant, when they over bored a load of engine blocks and the rs 3.1 was born.
Good stuff, thanks...

@Sean Gavin They did a Mk2 Boss V8 too
Great music.
In the min. 04.39 Ford Capri 1600 L. 1968-72.
I have someone 1987 in Germany and later transit in Kosovo.
I used to have 1.3 V4 engine it was absolutly beutiful then a changed it with 2.3 GT mk2. Both was beuatiful cars.

And so did I. Reg no. WNA 88L
They had a very complicated model line up.
Good video.
But what about the models I owned, 1.6s, 2.0s and the last Capri and the one I emptied my savings account to buy the Brooklands 280.
Worth emptying your savings for a Brooklands.
They weren’t 69-74 obviously.
I was in a Ford Show room and I thought what a load of rubbish The Capri was such a stunning car for its time shame ford lost the magic touch
Signature tune for bullit the film
I WISHD ID HAD 3 CAPRIS 69-72... I LIKE IT
Best ever ever and ever!
One of the few British Fords seen in American roads . They did well with women but the guys had big blocks available and didn't give this car much notice .
We had cars with 300 + horse power and top speeds of 125+ . This modeljust couldn't find a niche . Its a shame too because I rather liked it .
I think Ford hadn't even thought about selling just one capri in the US..bc Mustang. If i was an American and had lived in that time, I'd be like "Why buy the 'european fake' Mustang, when you can have the real one?"

In South Africa you could have bought a Capri Perana to scratch that V8 itch
My first proper car was a used metallic blue with black vinyl roof Capri 1600 L....when I went to the Ford used car dealer to pick it up there was a 1600 GT XLR in the showroom which wasnt there when I initially went to see the 1600 L....the salesman in no way would allow me to change as all the paper work etc had been done also he was,nt the salesman for the GT XLR so his commision would be affected....what a loss for me....but that 1600 L lasted me for years without any problems except the stupid headlight switch going on fire. My first car in 1983, was a 1970 1600gt Capri , it was absolutely rotten and I paid £20 for t
Der gute alte Maurerporsche.
nothing about 2600rs?...
Did you make that track? If not, what is it?
"Shifting Gears" the first track, then "Bullitt" - both by Lalo Schifrin 1968
Love Lalo Schifrin. May have a listen to his famous 5/4 jam right now.
Bullit music nice Cars 👍🌍
Text is too fuzzy to read? Shame.
What about North American Capris?
ma mère a eu 3 Ford Capri

What's with the Bullitt Chase Scene Music?
There was a Broadspeed Bullitt version down by that tuning company.
Nice :)
Très bien
6:16 MK1 hilariously photoshopped into a MK1½
I prefer the Original Capri ( The two door version of the Ford Classic ).
they were awful rust buckets
Stylish ones though
