  • The Mk1 Ford Capri (1968 -1973) reached it's pinnacle in 1969 when the 3 litre V6 powered 3000e came out, and I took this Aubergine purple 1970 car for a drive.
    Yes, I know I said '64 to '74 in the video, sorry misread the notes

    one of my employers was a windscreen fitting company,he had 3 company cars,we left some keys at a customers and had to go get them,no vans available so he said to me 'take the Capri' excitement overcame me,it was in black and at the time it was a 3.0 john player special,AND I WAS ONLY 18,it was like giving me the keys to a sweet shop,WHAT A CAR ! 😂😂

    I had 6 capri's. A 1979 T registration 1.6 GL automatic. A 1981 2.0 Caberet 1. A 2.0 S. A blue 2.0 Cabaret 2. A 1.6 Laser and finally a 2.8i Special in two tone blue. Simple mechanics and maintenance and fun to drive especially in the wet!

      I own 4 capri´s the last wasn´t released in Portugal where i live and had to order it from the netherlands where i have a friend(now he lives 50km´s from me in portugal ,sunny all year around (this year as made cold and rained a lot like it never hapened in the last 25 years, minimum temperature 5 degrees celsius) who sent me cars to sale and i choose that specific car because of the colour scheme that i have a fiesta 1.4S(this one instead of the alloy wheels like i have in a white sportive 1600 XR2i )as some caps but very nice ones have the look of racing wheels with a center in the shape of a screw with tightening in the form of a hexagonal screw and white with pearl painting and because they are screwed to the iron wheel with four screws they never left the wheels, this fiesta as lager and longer measures in the chassi like the RS1600(one year older)the regular XR2 are in portugal and Spain a 1.3Lengine with a dual carburator , also have a four door sierra 1.8 turbo diesel from the same year ,all have blue paint metalized and half the body bellow a trim with large dark grey plastic and a red strip in the midle ,the cars have a grey paint that seems rubber type having full extras with two extra round lights like i have in the 80´s older escort XR3i model, they have alloy wheels with round holes with the cut on the round shape holes painted with a darker grey shade, similar to Alfa-romeu´s early 90´s alloy wheels

      That was Ford's secret in the late 60's and 70's. Cars that were pretty good, but just looked so much more stylish than what most others were doing. If you look at the sports Escorts, Cortina 1600E, Lotus Cortinas, Capris etc. which other mass manufacturer had classics like that in their range that are still desirable today?

    That's a gorgeous colour on the Mk1 Capri and it's a pre facelift Mk1 which are the best looking in my opinion. The Mk1 Capri was produced from its launch in 1969 until the Mk2 came out in 1974 and was facelifted in 1972. The 3.0 Essex V6 Mk1's came out in 1970/71. Great video by the way I would love that car.

    Capri did not run from 1964, it was introduced in 1969. The Capri which was around in 64 was based on the Ford Classic and was completely different. Also, being an H reg, the Essex 3 litre at that stage was only giving 128bhp, it wasn't until late 1970 (J reg) when the engine was revised and the output increased to 138bhp.

Nice to see the old monster on the road - not sure how it would feel on a sharpish bend in the wet - only later marques had limited slip differential

      In NZ the Essex 3.0 was rated at 140bhp in the '71 Mk4 Zephyr. It had a large dual throat 40/40 Weber downdraft with both barrels opening by direct mechanical linkage and simultaneously too..!
      This was to give a really great throttle response, because the earlier NZ Mk4's were berated by Kiwi drivers as being 'gutless wonders' for towing etc, those early ones being all 2.5 V6's.
      After the early complaint the 2.5 engines were no longer brought into NZ, and the entire Mk4 range, regardless of spec, were all 3.0 dual throat Weber powerhouses.
      That engine had good power, and the big, massive frontal area Mk4's would still top out at over the ton easily..!
      103mph on a smooth paved level straight to be exact..!

      it wasn't terribly quick (Australia at the time had V8 Ford Falcon GT/GTHOs, Holden Monaro its V8s / Torana XU1 and Chrysler its Valiant Charger 4.3 litre triple webered 6, all with much more horsepower) but the Essex V6 was a nice motor that sounded wonderful. I still hanker for this V6 - perhaps refreshed with present day seals and gaskets, bigger radiator, brake updates, sorted suspension for ride comfort and a 5 speed manual PLUS (because I'm in Australia), air conditioning

      I was going to reply about the "64" error but you guys took care of it. I explained to my son that he may have been referring to the Consul Capri or it could have just been a typo he read somewhere. We had the "Mercury Capri" in the States through '78 and wound up with a FOX body Capri in '79 which was just a restyled Mustang. My goal is to find a MK1 Capri someday. I remember seeing a new white '71 Capri when I was 5 and it looked so cool. I had a joy ride in a '72 V6 Capri in high school and it left a great impression on me. My uncle had a '71 Celica which was a direct competitor to the Capri. They were both very cool cars amongst the land barges that filled our roads back then.

    There isn’t even a place in East Anglia called Anglia! I used to drive a ‘72 3-litre GXL (twin headlamps), which had the luxury of a radio and 8-track player! It was a very torquey engine and it was easy to spin the rear wheels in most gears in the wet. In fact, the tyres (185/70), brakes and handling weren’t really up to the performance of the engine, which sounded lovely. Thanks for the review and drive.

If you got the money, find one if you have the will to restore or repair it. I have a 1965 Valiant 4PV 273 V8, white with a vinyl roof (if you have ever seen one). The car used to be my dad's and when I first got the drivers licence I bought it off him. He wanted to trade it in for a new 1969 Ford Falcon. The Valiant is still with me today, garaged and maintained by me, a mechanic myself. Make a temporary email address and sent the email to me, names Mick. I will then send you the many customised Valiants I had in my youth. Once you get the photos you then can delete the email address.

    I ended up replacing the resonators with larger mufflers and adding smaller resonators near the tailpipe. I quieted the drone down, but at certain speeds it was still noticeable.

    In my opinion the Mk1 Capri was the best looking and most fun car Ford ever produced. Back in their day we called these long stem mirrors "Corsair mirrors" as we fitted a lot of them on the Ford Corsair. They worked ok as long as you took the trouble to adjust the head of them properly with a spanner, trouble was that you were in and out of your seat until it was adjusted right.. Door mirrors did catch on eventually which were a good improvement.

    • @Mortimer50145
      @Mortimer50145 2 года назад

      I agree about the uselessness of wing mirrors: far too small and therefore an enormous blind spot. About the only thing in their favour is that you can see both mirrors (and the road ahead) without turning your head, whereas checking the passenger-side door mirror (when pulling in after overtaking) requires taking your eyes off the road ahead and turning a long way to the left. Likewise when reversing, when you need to scan both mirrors (ideally simultaneously) to check for clearance from gateposts and walls, and being centred between lines in a parking bay. With wing mirrors, you can't have a passenger mirror which normally shows the road behind but which automatically dips to show the rear wheel in relation to the kerb when you are parallel parking and need to get the rear wheel as close as possible before turning into the parking space. Things that we take for granted nowadays but which we (or rather our parents) didn't have in the 1970s.

    I live in the USA and my dad had a 1974 Mercury Capri when I was a kid. He owned it circa 1980 to 1983. The main styling difference with the U.S. versions was bigger bumpers and round headlights. My dad's had a 4 cylinder, either 2 or 2.3 liters, and I remember my dad liked how peppy it was - he liked to bark the tires taking off. My dad got into an accident with it on the way to work, circa 1983. He was fine but it spelled the end of the Capri and he replaced it with a '75 Chevrolet Impala.

    They were great poor man's cars. We converted one as Cabriolet at our panel shop in 74 just as an experiment and discovered that the chassis held well and solid without a roof. But we still added a couple of stiffening channels under the floor just to make sure it wouldn't break apart. It drove real well too. As you see, it had all you need, a stylish interior for a small, beautiful sports car, even a clock.

      In the early 70's, Ford had four solid (non-metallic) colours among others in their pallette, that you could specify with your new Escort or Capri. They were red, which was no different to any previous red, either from them or any other manufacturer, but they christened it Sebring Red and it was lined up alongside Monza Blue, Daytona Yellow and Le Mans Green, which was a lime green. But they were all strangely desirable colours.

    My first car here in the US was a 1980 Mercury Capri. I've tried to find one but they have all been the later 80's ones with the ugly bubble rear end where the 1980 was the same as the mustang . I loved that car, I had no idea that name went this far back and started under the Ford name in Europe.

    Being your Yankee brother from the states, I love the Euro Capri too. Which is a rare sight over here. There were some sold here under the Mercury badge but slightly different and choked down with smog crap for American market. My friend Steve bought a used Euro Capri made in Germany that a GI brought back to the States. First time I saw one as a kid, i didn't understand the significance of its relationship to the mustang of which i had several early ones. So here's a little build recipe from your yankee brother. I also love the Triumph spitfires, but always felt they were under powered for the beautiful design. I built a Spitfire on a GT6 Chassis. Installed a European V6 Capri and gearbox. Added wide lettered wheels, full dash Smith Gauges, an early Jag wood steering wheel with a Triumph center cap. On the hood a very very low profile Austin Martin DB style hood scoop. Added a dual high flow exhaust with dual twin tail monza exhaust tips. I almost went with super chargers too but it didn't need it. And made the car appear as if it came from the factory in that configuration. The car was a screaming monster and could lay rubber from 1 to 3. It was the perfect power to weight ratio for the car. It was a Triumph Spitfire Super GT. Someone told me later there was a company here in the states that built a handful of this configuration in a very similar way. Including the Hood scoop. I actually installed a triumph gas cap I found at a swap that had Super GT cast into it in red letters. But anyway. If you want a bad ass concept for a blown up triumph that needs an engine. Try finding a good Capri drivetrain. I only sold it after almost losing my drivers license after accidentally putting on a performance show in front of a cop. Did anybody do this conversion on a spit over there? I forgot to add that the Capri engine was bored over, mild cam, heavier valve springs, balanced and port and polished with Weber carbs. But that's not neccessary to do as the stock configuration of the engine is a bounty of power for the Triumph Spitfire. Those things let it go over 6 thou rpms no problem. Think about the sound. Lamans,,,lol

    • @furiousdriving
      @furiousdriving  4 года назад +1

      I dont think Ive ever heard of that conversion before (and I work for classic car and hot rod magazines..) The Spitfire with GT6 running gear, so the straight 6 and a 5 speed box from something else is not uncommon, but not the Ford. Nearest thing would be a Reliant Scimitar - glass fibre coupe body with Ford V6 and running gear.
      That sounds like an great project...once Ive done my Morris Minor with Iprezza WRX running gear Ill move on to that!

    • @bcabmac
      @bcabmac 4 года назад

      @@furiousdrivingReally? I,m elated! After I built it, the only thing I might of changed was the GT6 Differential. And the flex coupling drive axles. I didn't have any trouble with it, but sometimes you keep wanting to go a step more. The Capri engine I used was out of Connecticut US and had been in an SCCA race car from the 70s. I have pictures of my car somewhere and be happy to share with you. It's been 15 years since I sold it. Have no idea what happened to it. But I would love to see you built another. Its everything I felt a top notch Spitfire could have been and should have been in a dream configuration. Your in for a thrill of a drive. Over here there is plenty of chevy V8s stuffed in them, and rover engines mostly with bulging hoods and chopped up a bit too much. But to me, the Capri engine was a match made in heaven. Please let me know if you do it. Many thanks. Mac

I had a v4 in my earlier car and my brother had a 2litre pinto in his facelifted car, so perhaps the pinto engine was introduced with the facelift. The v4 was very torquey and easily able to bark its tyres when rolling in first or second. But it was done at 3500-4000 rpm.
