  • There's a lot going on in the anime world, specifically with MAPPA, and there's been a flood of criticism their way, on Jujutsu Kaisen, on Attack on Titan.. you name it. But this isn't just a Mappa Problem, this is an industry wide issue, this is The Anime Problem - Artists are overworked and underpaid, and it only seems to be getting worse. Let's talk about it.

I don't understand why they don't give them a break. Wouldn't you get more quality if you people refreshed themselves and had the chance to complete it. The mahoraga fight was amazing and the animators really said this is only 30% of my true power

@@azaangeorge9552 Simple answer : They can't, system sucks.
      Long answer:
It's just not the animators the suffer. It's most of the system. Good Forking luck trying to release episodes weekly where error or break will cost huge amount of money and time. Not to mention Voice acting, 3D, middle management and other department. If something goes wrong in one of them the entire thing gets delayed and now everyone has to work twice as much. And you know who has to work most of it off? Animators. So breaks are ABSOLUTELY OUT OF QUESTION.
It's like relay race but the track is impossibly long and they have impossibly short time limit and and top of that there are constant delays so most of the members have to run not twice but thrice as fast.

Because this is how the animation industry in Japan is like, that's how bad it's become, it's all more for profit than actual art, there's a reason why Miyazaki said that "anime was a mistake." Because greed and money destroyed the art.

It's a full time job. What is it with artists and wanting to work like 10 hours a week for a full salary? You're expected to work the full hours at a full time job and meet deadlines. You think a factory is going to just stop production to give all the workers a month long break? This narrative of "Omg! They JUST finished working on X anime, and now started work on Y anime!" Yeah. That's how work works. You finish a project, and start a new one, because projects are how you get paid. You want to do less projects, while also getting paid? How does that work? Where does the money come from? Mappa are one of the highest paid animators in the industry. Most of the narrative over MAPPA in the west is total hyperbole and exaggerated google translated posts from twitter that lose the context of the post. You don't see coal miners whining on twitter about their 18 hour shift in the mines, or oil rig workers hitting their 20th hour on the shift and borderline about to pass out.
The alternative is you get junk like Invincible which takes literally 2 years to release only 4 episodes. What a colossal joke. American art is dead and unions kill it. God forbid Japan unionizes because anime will be a dead genre if those viper organizers start sucking up half the "increased wages" and damage studios even more. You think anime studios swim in money? They don't. The publisher of the series does. Unions would only compound the budget and make the work significantly worse.

MAPPA will never be like KyoAni if they keep continuing the path they are going. KyoAni actually treats their workers like human beings. They pay their staff liveable wages and they actually educate beginner animators on anime creation. They also take their time on each project to ensure its the highest quality (hence why they only release less than MAPPA per year). KyoAni needs to be appreciated much more because of this honestly bc MAPPA makes them look like saints when its just the bare minimum.
Edit: Found out the animation studio was set on fire a couple of years ago and many staff have died bc of it, so please support KyoAni!!

Its funny how people kept complaining about the breaks in AOTs final season, when those same people are the ones criticizing MAPPA for rushing. With AOT they were super rushed originally, and had more time for the later parts which is why the further in you go the better MAPPAs AOT seasons look. Those long breaks are good for the abimators.@Cranson92

    • @Cranson92
      @Cranson92 4 месяца назад +3

@@Cameron-qe7il I mean, the pacing of releases for AOT was always a problem for me, and one of the things i disliked about the show the most. 4 years between seasons 1 and 2. Season 3 took a 6 month break in the middle. I didn't even know season 4 was a different studio when I dropped it because it was business as usual with bad release schedule.
That being said, I think part of why MAPPA specifically got so much criticism was the naming scheme. Why would you call something "The Final Season" to get everyone hyped up and then take a 10 month break, then an 11 month break, then an 8 month break? 2 seasons and 2 movies. THAT'S what they produced. Not a single "final season".

Correction: Chainsaw Man actually sold pretty well. The myth that Chainsaw Man didn't sell well because of the Blu-ray sells is honestly pretty wrong.
Oricon did report that Chainsaw Man had a low turnout in its first 3 days, however, it did not account the sales data for Mappa's online stores (about 10,000 copies were sold).
So while having large numbers for Blu-ray sales is a good thing, it's not the only way for an anime to be financially successful.
That said, I hate how the animators are being overworked and underpaid, especially at Mappa. It's ironic, considering that Frieren has a much healthier production schedule in Madhouse, and it looks amazing. It's gotten to the point where I'm cheering for the animators whenever they decide to take a break, because at least they're being careful of their health. Too many shows are being made, but Manabu Otsuka does not care. He just wants to produce as many high profiled shows as possible, which sucks! At the end of the day, I hope that there can be more ways to support animators.

Obviously no one wants this quality of animation to ever go away, but the animators absolutely MUST be compensated for their hard work. It’s a win-win for everyone. More people are willing to support the show, and the animators actually have motivation to show up to work every day and get things done, and in a healthy way. The Chainsaw Man team under Mappa is actually said to be among the more flexible teams under Mappa. Key reason being Mappa self-funds Chainsaw Man which also means profit 100% goes to them (aside from the portion that goes to Shueisha, obviously), which means merch sales of the CSM anime actually goes to the studio and its staff. That also means Chainsaw Man has no production committee they need to answer to, which means no executives breathing down their necks with ridiculously unrealistic deadlines. The CSM project still has overtime and deadlines for submitting shots, but from what I've seen of comments from the animators, nothing as near as the ridiculousness that are JJK Season 2 deadlines. So I am inclined to believe that the Chainsaw Man team under Mappa might actually have better pay and better working conditions compared to the other teams. The thing is, that flexibility really only applies to the Chainsaw Man team, and ONLY them. Other shows under Mappa are under production committees and the executives in those committees are really abusing their power with the other IPs Mappa is handling.

as a die hard yuri on ice fan since its release: thank you so much for adressing this anime and the issue with ice adolescence too! for me, the handling with ice ado is another perfect example of mappa's miscommunication (well, at least they've communicated in this year that yoi was their stairway to the fame while receiving the worst profit due to bad organization).
it's just so frustrating to know that other animes are getting season after season because their staff is overworked af.
    nevertheless, great video!
(and of course, i'd love to see a video about yoi/ice ado

This video really opens a lot to me and i genuinely didn't expect that there were workers in worst case scenarios i found to relate wholeheartedly.
I recently worked in a 2d animated short film that i directed myself and during the 2 months production it was just as bad as you'd expect, i literally enslaved my own friends just to make the progress faster and better and it definitely took a toll, the A1 worker is like a reminder to myself "I just want the work conditions to improve" but sadly this issue is very universal even in most recent Hollywood productions, Japan is just one of the worst places being highlighted by the media, anyway this is an amazing educational video and i hope it reaches a lot of people, thanks Browntable.
Edited note : i think this is also crucial but i'm also the lead animator of my own short film so i'm speedrunning 90% of the animation

This is a great video on a topic that cannot be talked about enough. I love that your editor is popping in to provide accurate info on the industry, and where people can learn more and help out. Any video outside of anitube mentioning figures like KViN and sites like Sakugablog are a W in my book.
There are a few things that I feel like could’ve been talked about with more consideration, especially since this video is probably going to introduce some people to a lot of important info.
    TLDR
    1) Production committees, though mitigating risk, is a flawed system and Chainsaw Man's production issues are more a management problem seen in all of their productions than an issue with their self funding decision.
    2) Would've like to see more discussion on the specific teams/production lines behind MAPPA productions to help give more context on who is getting overworked and how.
    3) Would've like to see shout outs to staff you guys enjoy from these productions to better encourage people to do the same.
    1) 22:38 Even if it was risky, it isn’t inherently bad to forgo a production committee for an anime. Plenty of anime productions don’t have the studios on the production committee, leading to the studios getting less control of the production and less profit from royalties, instead only getting the production costs. Those production costs are low since there is a cap on how much production committees can provide for an anime production, meaning that if the studio isn’t on the committee, they get paid like shit. Ufotable is on the production committees for their shows, KyoAni is heavily involved in the committees for their projects. The added risk and higher production values lead to them just producing less shows than other studios, but they are amazing and make money. There’s more risk, or reward, and more control the more a studio funds their project, often meaning we get the best work from animators, and in cases like MADHOUSE and BONE’s passion projects, better schedules than usual.
It would’ve been better for MAPPA to give Chainsaw Man a better schedule to actually complete it while not overworking animators and staff, but that is a problem with management overall instead of an issue with their full funding decision. The show wasn’t even a failure, it made back its budget, particularly with help from its streaming distribution pay, but it was just disappointing compared to how much they anticipated, especially compared to JJK, which was a blowout megahit.
There is a pretty good video by HitReg currently called “This Anime exposed a $28,000,000,000 Slave Operation” (It was named something else before) about this topic, and even the Animator Dormitory Project RUclips channel made a short video discussing the issue with production committees. The system is good for diminishing risk, but it is far from perfect, and any step for a studio to be a part of this funding process is a step forward.
    2) Maybe it would’ve been outside the scope of this video, but it would’ve been nice to teach people about the different production teams at MAPPA. I am not the most read up on this myself, but I am aware of the two most well known production teams, the team led by Yuichiro Hayashi, the director behind Garo the Vanishing Line, Kakegurui, Dorohedoro, and AOT: The Final Season, and the team centered around animation producer Keisuke Seshimo, who has this role for JJK and CSM. There is some overlap, but understanding these production lines can give further context as to how animators are being overworked and the ridiculous standards to which Otsuka and MAPPA higher ups are holding them to. Saying “MAPPA animators” is so much better than just crediting the company, but there are certain teams working for certain productions that should be given credit when they can. It's already terrible knowing that the JJK anime was allegedly only in production for 4 months, but it is equally as terrible knowing that it is the same production line working on CSM with only around a year of production time around the same time, and having only around 7 months of lead time to work on JJK. It's terrible knowing that AOT staff were rawdogged by the production committee insisting that the series was released alongside the manga finale, but it is also sad that it's the reason that Dorohedoro has no known date of release, since Hayashi and his team can’t work on it because of the sudden priority of AOT.
There are some people who want these production lines to be combined, but another solution could be, like with every other problem in the industry, is to give better schedules and pay animators. Maybe make less anime while you’re at it too?
    3) Would’ve in general love to see you shout out directors and staff of the shows you enjoy and thank them while encouraging people to do the same. Happy you provided credits to the cuts you show in the video which is really cool.
Thank you series director Shoto “Gosso” Goshozono for JJK S2.
Thank you Souta Yamazaki and Sayaka Koiso for making corrections when you can that make these characters look the best they’ve ever looked.
Thank you episode directors Itsuki “Miso” Tsuchigami, Atsushi Nakagawa, and Kazuto Arai/ Sunakohara for making the best episodes of the year.
    And f**k you Manabu Otsuka.

Something I’ve also seen that’s absolutely crazy (and maybe this has happened in the past but idk) is that you have OP animations that aren’t even finished by the episode air date. Zom 100 is the obvious example but I noticed when watching Tokyo Revengers S3 (being one of the few people sticking with it lmao) the OP animation has slight changes every episode in the first few episodes. It’s just a shame that so much stuff is being pumped out so quickly that stuff will air unfinished

The entertainment industry in Japan in general seems like a very parasitic place
Manga authors are worked to the bone and end up with health issues, or even worse, they end up dead
Now anime has the same problem where animators are not only overworked but they barely make a living out of it
Some shows in Japan treat guests as less than human, the most prominent case being the man who was stuck in a room for a year named Nasubi
    Its a very harrowing state

7:07 I agree with your general point that anime fans get unreasonably upset about particular aspects of an anime's animation that they dislike, but I've seen that video that you brought up as an example of this and I disagree. That video is a genuine, well-put together critique of the One Piece anime overall as an adaptation of the manga in contrast to the quality of the anime adaptation of The Land of the Lustrous. It wasn’t unreasonably criticizing a few shots for not being perfect or something. I just wanted to bring that up, but this was a great video overall!

What really gets my blood boiling is people saying that Season 2's animation is worse and that this season is a filler season (as in MAPPA didn't invest a lot into it and the animation suffered, which it didn't)
Because the animation is fucking stellar and an improvement from Season 1, maybe some mean the art style, but even then. The animation greatly improved and that's because of the animators and directors, it's way more dynamic and fluid. It's genuinely the most amazing work, even with the shit working conditions, these animators really deserve all praise and compensation for Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2.

  • @lazyworkingsloth

Very well made video over this issue compared to other videos where their research is surface level at best. However, there are a couple things I would like to clear up.
First and foremost, I wouldn't say the 100% funding of Chainsaw Man was a bad idea because it still earned a lot of money through streaming deals even if blu ray sales weren't the best. Also, more studios should fund more of their projects or not have a committee due to how shitty the production committee system is at causing studios to earn barely any money from their projects and then cause them to almost go bankrupt. Following this, it's probably the reason why Ice Adolescence movie haven't released yet as MAPPA was at the bottom of the committee of a large committee of 10 companies if I remember correctly meaning that they earned barely any profits off of doing so. The movie seems to be in a production limbo with Manabu probably focusing their teams on different projects that they would earn more which I can't exactly blame him for because they would earn drops of what that movie made.
Second point is however that the fact that MAPPA isn't as doom and gloom as you're making it in your video. MAPPA isn't one giant team working on multiple projects simultaneously and has multiple teams with an anime producer overlooking each project at MAPPA and having their own separate team. And MAPPA has a whopping 8 anime producers with each of them being talented but the two most talented would be Masato Matsunaga and Keisuke Seshimo. Following this, this means that issues in one production line wouldn't really affect the others to a major extent for the most part. Most of the lines at MAPPA are actually really stable with some heathly schedule projects recently (2022- 2023). Anime producer Matsunaga is probably working on Lazarus which has a very healthy schedule with production starting in 2019 for a show airing in late 2024 which is to be expected of a show directed by Shinichiro Watanabe. Ogawa line is also stable but their projects are mainly low priority projects that have good schedule allowing them to create good looking shows like Tondemo Skill with little stress. Hayashi team that works on AOT got a "decent" schedule for the last two episodes partly in due to Hayashi managing to get a delay from the production committee. Taking lots of projects won't mean more stressful productions if there's an anime producer available and the schedule assigned is actually good which it usually is for non Seshimo projects. The only exception is for projects that have the same anime producer which is what happened with Hell's Paradise under Kawagoe line and JJK and CSM under Seshimo. For Hell's Paradise, Kawagoe prioritized talent on AOT over HP resulting in HP looking mediocre along with it's bad schedule while AOT got good treatment along with its decent schedule. With AOT over, this'll mean that HP team will get some more help from the AOT staff but schedule is still in the air. However, Seshimo line is the only real problem at MAPPA that consistently gets into mediocre to terrible/hell productions due to the fact that they have to juggle JJK and CSM with both of them cutting each other's schedule. That can only really be solved when there's another amazing producer like Seshimo is available to replace him which so far looks to be Matsunaga once he finishes Lazarus because currently right now Seshimo is probably the best anime producer only rivaled by Fukushi at Madhouse that can gather talented freelancers in the anime industry.
On to my next point, MAPPA is a very large studio of over 400 inhouse staff members not including the large amount of freelancers on their projects which every studio uses. Kyoani and Ufotable mainly only uses their inhouse staff to make projects with Kyoani being 99% in house and Ufotable mostly inhouse. This results in them making about 1-2 projects a year with their heathly schedules. MAPPA releases more due to the amount of teams and the staff they have and also due to their large talented inhouse staff. All in all, they can support this amount of large projects as long as it's not a highly ambitious show like JJK and CSM that needs a lot of talent and not kill their animators in the process.
Overall very good video, I just wanted to mention how not all of MAPPA is hell right now and that there is a little hope for the employees if they can somehow fix the issues at Seshimo line which probably won't happen considering they are their powerhouse team. Hopefully in the future MAPPA along with other studios can overall improve their conditions.

In a recent interview with Nishii Terumi (animation director for JJK0 and JJBA), there's also a problem of not enough training and mentorship for young animators due to the industry prioritizing quicker production so that they can churn out more contents and gain quicker profits. This prioritization on profit hits inbetweening the most. Companies starts paying less to inbetweener (which of course causes in less applicants), outsourcing it to cheaper overseas vendors (making it harder to supervise and check ups), or not hiring inbetweener altogether, instead choosing to use inbetweening software and AI as shortcuts.
Yeah, inbetweening is labour intensive, felt insignificant, and a huge time sink. But it's an integral part of learning animation and developing the sense to become better animator. Because of this now you have a lot of young animators or even directors that aren't actually qualified yet to be at that level but has to be one because there's a target sales to be achieved and commities to be pleased.
Basically, veteran animators are getting old (and dying), and they're unable to properly train the fresh blood because of the changes in pipeline and reliance on shortcuts from how the industry has become.
