In regards to Frasier's dad being dead in Cheers, he also claimed his father to have been a great intellectual so it can also be interpreted as him being ashamed of his working class origins and making up a fake ideal dad.
I really appreciate you doing this one because I literally just finished a re-watch of Frasier last night. Niles is by far my favorite character of the show, and I agree with pretty much everything that you said about Cheers as well. I'm looking forward to hearing your opinions about the Frasier sequel, because personally, I really enjoyed it. I really miss the presence of David Hyde Pierce, but otherwise the show is fantastic. I did hear that apparently, Ted Danson wants to appear in season 2, and I think that would be really interesting to see what has happened to the character of Sam Malone in the preceding years.
Archie Bunker, Al Bundy, Homelander... some things never change. There is always a shockingly high number of people in the world who can't understand how awful they've become.
Happy belated birthday! Sorry I missed the stream. I miss Fact Fiend already, but I hope everybody is enjoying their time. I know doing the same things for years on end leads to unavoidable burnout. Thank you for still making content!
Always wondered if Becker could be worked into their universe. Was a surprising endearing character who truly cared about his patients. I know he wasn't the same guy like Frasier, but it could have worked with a cameo or something.
@@CasLok88 oh thankyou man. that has been itching at the back of my brain for months now. was trying to remember what it was but could only remember clips of it without any names. it was one of the go to shows for me to watch when it was on
I grew up watching Cheers with my dad when it was in syndication. But I remember enjoying Frasier more. Frasier syndication in HS was so popular along with Father Ted and Fresh Prince means we had guys in my class acting out like Dougal, Niles and Carlton. It was super hilarious as teenagers to watch these boys doing these characters to a T in the classroom.
12:16 John Ritter (Jack from Three’s Company) was also like that imo. A great physical comedy actor that was just naturally funny! RIP! And I love that scene with Niles in the coffee shop having a nervous breakdown. He’s a comedy legend! Fraiser will always be one of my top favorite comedy shows.
What I love about Frasier is that it’s his and Niles’ own pomposity that does for them. They willingly over complicate everything in their pursuit of societal standing and sophistication. Yet even when Martin, Daphne and Roz are skewering them, its ego popping rather than something actually nasty.
I remember an example, when they were trying to take Eddie to the vet to be fixed. Frasier mentions that they have to be careful what they say because they don't know how much Eddie will understand. Niles starts speaking in French. Frasier agrees it's a good idea, and after about thirty seconds Frasier explodes in frustration over the lengths they're going to to outsmart a dog.
People who don't get Frasier think it's all highbrow humour but it really isn't. It's about a pair of snobs and the people around them who bring them down to earth. The snobbery is the setup, not the punchline. The various dynamics in the cast were the highlight, I particularly liked Roz and Niles whose interactions were always sniping at each other but you never got the sense they disliked each other all that much, they were just keeping their teeth sharp. Led to one of my favourite exchanges when they were all in the booth. Frasier: Oh Niles, guess what thriving Seattle night spot is closing its doors. Niles: Roz, you're moving?!
If it counts as continuously being a character even if there's a gap when they aren't that character, then Welker DOES get that half-century title. SPOILERS for a show that's like... a decade old: The ending of Mystery, Inc. implies that when the world resets it BECOMES the original series, ergo it's the same Fred.
Of course slapstick is what they're best known for, but Rik Mayall and Ade Edmonson were incredible physical comedians. To the point that half the sitcoms they were in together revolved almost entirely around them just kicking the shit out of each other (The Young Ones and Bottom are the big ones for those unaware)
Completely off on the Sam from Cheers being the same as the soc from Sunny. It's actually worrying, or maybe telling that anyone can see the characters as similar on anything but a facile level. Al Bundy is a tragic figure, or meant to be. His "opinions" get worse because his life does. He has no reason to not be an arsehole. Can't disagree on Archie though, still funny as a love to hate. Melissa McCarthy, as Sookie St James is brilliant. In anything else she hasn't really worked. So agree there, mainly as any other actor is a better fit in everything aside from Gilmore Girl's she was in. Those aside, Frasier Crane day is maybe the best episode to summarise the character. Trying to get someone to watch, this was around y2k. That is the episode I used. He spends the entire episode getting in his own way, being an ass and selfishly aggrandising Frasier Crane, his day and literal parade. Then, with the goal in site, literally he misses it intentionally to help a taxi driver fan who is depressed. That's Frasier. To add, should have waited till the end. Chris Pratt for comedy/physical comedy as Andy Dwyer in Parks and Rec. Action star my arse.
If y'all haven't seen it you should check out the American sitcom 3 rd rock from the sun. A great cast including john Lithgow, wayne knight and a young Joseph Gordon levitt. And others

Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson in Bottom and The Young Ones. Also, fabulous work.

Hard agree on Niles, one of the few actors where you're laughing before he starts his line.
My wife also called Frasier a perfect show. Something you can put on if stressed etc.

Madelin Khan!
Did M.A.S.H. air in the UK. If so did it have the affect it did in the US
If young people don't know All in the Family, their parents failed them.
Also the fact that Carroll O'Connor was really a liberal is so fascinating. Everyone knows Rob Reiner is.

I'm not sayin, I'm just sayin...
Niles was a terrible person back then and he's basically awful by 2024 standards.
