Sonic Youth's ability to write singles was always overlooked and lost in the mix of everything else going on. They wrote so many catchy songs. All 3 songwriters still do.
I think he has almost suddenly started looking a lot more feminine, and older, since he broke up with Kim. Isn't that funny? I think he looks really weird, now. He always did look slightly weird. Now, he looks really weird. And old. Kim looks shit-hot. Even more so. Fuck the bastard! He is a pig! 👌
Paola Schmidt New era arising! This is like the 60s to the 90s, the 90s to the 20s. I’m excited, hopefully something will come good of the pandemic....
*Renaldo really was in stark contrast to Moore throughout the bands entire existence. Sure, Thurston could be melodious and catchy, but Lee was right in there with the grit and grime of it all. He just had the knack of making the most intensified feelings become magic. 'In The Kingdom #19' from EVOL is a real work of genius, artistic perfection. He was like the Underground Hendrix*
Listened to this on the radio when it came out. It was amazing. I didn’t know it was Sonic Youth and it took me weeks until I heard it on the radio again and heard the name of the band. No internet back then
Pretty well the best "bring it down" ever (right next to one on The Pixies Live in Chicago gig) . The Sonics are something else. Loved them forever. The two Kim's in rock are something to be treasured forever.
Rage is an Australian music show that was followed by the tv show Recovery. The band played live on Recovery, and a couple years later they replayed the experience on Rage.
I love that song! Yes, I love almost every albums of SY, I have to admit, I am a fan. But this song is very special to me. Thanks, SY, for your musik, words, and of course, noises. Such a very beautiful way to mix voices, words, poppy punky songs, and noises. Love, love. And, as a drummer, Steve Shelley is one of my heroes (argh, sister, first half of the album, not complicated technically, but fast, sooo fast...the best drums lessons I can have). Love you, my friends. Take care ❤
I remember watching this when it was originally aired - must I have been 15. Would have been soon after listening to Paranoid Android on repeat for the previous year or so. Changed my brain chemistry. In hindsight this was probably a gateway drug to noise.
@@JezielJovel I was "chaperoning" (from a campus activities point of view) the Tassie band that won the National Campus Band Competition a couple of weeks earlier. Flew back over for the Recovery gig. It was a tough job, etc ...
used to love going out Friday nights to gigs, then waking up hungover Sat morning and watching Recovery for 3 hours. live TV unscripted and always great music. you would quite often see the band you saw the night before on the show at like 10am
Sunday comes alone again A perfect day for a quiet friend And you - you will set it free I see new morning round your face Everybody says its another phase And now - now its come to me See the magic in your eyes I see it come as no surprise And you - you turn your eyes away Yeah you - you turn it all away I guess its true its never too late Still I don't know what to do today Oh why - can't I set you free Will you - do the same for me Sunday comes and Sunday goes Sunday always seems to move so slow To me - here she comes again A perfect ending to a perfect day A perfect ending what can I say To you - lonely Sunday friend With you - Sunday never ends.
Steve: Hardcore influenced rhythm boi Lee: Experimental guitar heart of the band Thurston: Rhythmic and melodic while still being noisy, had the best songs. Kim: Great at supporting the noise.
Yeahh ... we love Sonic Youth they have a great Sound...!!! If you like some german grunge you should hear this: Drunken Hippies - Sad things Peace.Love.Grunge
I prefer Sadgasm. "Pain is brown / Hate is white / Love is black / Stab the night / Kingdom of numb / Closet of hurt / Feelings are dumb / Kisses are dirt..."
After reflection, I realized that Sonic Youth can also lay claim to being one of the founders of shoegaze. Swervedriver, My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Catherine Wheel, etc may have defined the sound. But Sonic Youth was doing the art-noise dream thing around the same time, but independent from that scene as shoegaze is mainly a UK product. It makes perfect sense that Thurston wound up playing with Deb from MBV. If it can't be Kim, then it gotta be Deb. Anyway, Sonic Youth are in my top 5 American bands of all time. 1. The Replacements 2. The Jesus Lizard 3. Sonic Youth 4. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum 5. Steely Dan (I'm not joking. I'm an old fart and I love old fart music) If you made it this far then you are pretty cool for enduring another unsolicited opinion.....which is just what the world needs, right?

I think it’s because of their voices. They combine perfectly with the sound, but they are not „good“ by common criteria. E.g. no radio material.
"Catchy"?? :/
Thurston looking so young, although he was 40 there....
Ron Weasley...
Thurston never seemed to age until he was in his 50's. After the divorce, Kim started looking better and Thurston looks haggard. Just my opinion.
@@pdg887 I always thought like that lol

I dont know why this composition isnt on the world Top 10 or something related to Rock n Roll ones. Its amazing
Because Sonic Youth has 3 albums worth of better compositions.
Because their music is considered alternative, experimental and non-commercial. One of their BEST SONGS . . . EVER!!!!
Great song with great memories
beautiful.....what an era...gone forever... :-(
Paola Schmidt New era arising! This is like the 60s to the 90s, the 90s to the 20s. I’m excited, hopefully something will come good of the pandemic....
They look like they just came from thanksgiving dinner to play a rock show
awsome
True
Sunday was my entry to SY ❤. The first song I heard and I loved it.
Same
Lee’s guitar sounds massive. Holy shit
Dude was on Hendrix mode
Thurston was a fantastic rhythm guitarist. Just listen to him during Lee’s noise solo, especially from 2:52
Great catch. Hes a great strummer
very lou reedy

I think this is one of the best alt rock songs of all time.
For me is the best
Sonic Youth has been the soundtrack of my entire life since early 90s
Excellent vibe to this song, with a middle section to lose your mind into euphoric emotion. All i can say is thank you Sonic youth.
best fucking band ever
the truth
Love sonic youth with all my little heart
I loved "rage" subtitle on noise part
That's not a subtitle it's the tv show
Yr comment is making me rage!
Hahahahaha!!!!

Fun fact Kim from SY co produced Hole’s pretty on the inside.
98 was a phenomenal year. Remember it fondly.

who is the other? Kim jong un?
Kim Deal
Well, it's certainly not Kim Shattuck.
Kim Thayil
The Sonics are a garage band from Tacoma, Washington xD
That was an incredible performance!
I like how everybody shuts up right when they start the song
They knew something epic was about to happen
Amazing. Really miss SY :-(
I love how SY sounded so powerful without using extreme distortion

Amen to that
Woooow that was just perfect
That was fucking brilliant.
Maestros!!!
Cannot stop watch this ...
Lee ronaldo's guitar in this reminds me of Jim Jarmusch's guitar sounds in his band 'Squrl'
Underground 90s at its best.
Legendary
I hope this sound guy got a raise!
I was in the studio audience that day - pretty sure it was at ABC's Elsternwick studios, not Southbank.
David Wedd you’re a lucky person, damn.
There’s something faintly hilarious about this taking place in fucking Elsternwick, I don’t know why I think that though

This sounded amazing!
Steve: the heart of the band
Lee: the noisy and atmosphere boy
Thurston: melodic and alternative
Kim: great support of second guitar
Kim: Bassist, Vocalist Guitarist. Heart of the band. 😊😊😊
Steve: Hardcore influenced rhythm boi
Lee: Experimental guitar heart of the band
Thurston: Rhythmic and melodic while still being noisy, had the best songs.
Kim: Great at supporting the noise.
When you think, they all kind of trade these roles around depending on the song. Except Steve, who's basically the bandleader.
