The Winner Takes it All - the greatest Pop Song ever recorded. Agnetha Faltskog's voice is surreal. So much emotion. And that piano!

It is a lipsync presentation (something very common in TV shows of that time). This song also has an official video and an official lyric video.
Agnetha (the blond girl) is magnificent on this... an ABBA's masterpiece 👌!
A song of separation... of divorce... written by Björn, her ex-husband😮 (on her right on backing vocals and guitar).
Frida perfect on vocal backing and Benny excellent on the piano. (Frida and Benny divorced the following year 😔, 1981)
    Try 'Fernando' 🙏
    Take care, ✌️
    Love ❤️ from Chile 🇨🇱🤗👍

One of my favorite ABBA masterpieces, of which there are many. My other favorite is Dancing Queen.

... when you get a chance, watch the official video for this song... and you will see that Agnetha is not just acting the part in the song... towards the end, it looks as if she is ready to just start crying. For the longest time, Bjorn denied that the song was about his and Agnetha's divorce, but he later stated that the divorce did play a part in the lyrics. A later song called "When All Is Said and Done", with Freida on lead vocal, is generally considered Freida and Benny's breakup song. The funny thing is... one of their absolute best and most well known break-up songs is called "Knowing Me, Knowing You", and was recorded years before either couple separated. Strange foreshadowing.

Of course the divorce "play a part in the lyrics". But this song is not THEIR story. After the divorce they kept seeing each others and eventually they remained friends. There is a clip in the YT which explains their common projects after Abba. They are many. So in their divorce the winner "didn’t take it all".😊

@@teromattila3657they both admitted later on that it was about them. Agnetha said that the divorce left her feeling emotionally mangled and went on to say this
Speaking about the song in 2013, Agnetha said: "Björn wrote it about us after the breakdown of our marriage. The fact he wrote it exactly when we divorced is touching really.
"I didn't mind. It was fantastic to do that song because I could put in such feeling. I didn't mind sharing it with the public. It didn't feel wrong. There is so much in that song.
"It was a mixture of what I felt and what Björn felt but also what Benny and Frida went through."
She wrote in her 1997 book As I Am: “We always told the media that it was a ‘happy’ divorce, which of course was a front. Obviously, we all know there are no such things as happy divorces, especially when there are children involved.”

Agnetha... this wad written by her husband bjorn on the guitar, about there divorce... it must have been torture for her to sing this song, but it was a massive hit.

  • @tuijakarttunen9164
    @tuijakarttunen9164 Месяц назад +7

Björn said, he wrote the lyrics to this song in an hour while drinking whiskey alone. He then asked Agnetha, if it would be too painful for her to sing those lyrics but she said she could.
This is a lip sync. It was quite common at the time in tv shows. If you really want to hear them perform live, try the concerts and Dick Cavett show form 1981. They are amazing live. The official video to this song is also something worth checking out.

remember that ABBA is acronim with initials of Their first names, and tn the beginin two swedish couples too:
    Agnetha (blonde singer) &
    Björn (guitarist songwriter)
    Benny (pianist songwriter) &
    Anni Frid 'Frida' (brunette singer)
both couples separated before the break up of the group
"The winner takes it all" (1980)
is one of the Best Songs by ABBA
and the Most sad and emotional too
The best lyrics and the greatest performing with the amazing Interpretation of the lead singer
in this TV show express you could see the same blonde Agnetha free and natural in the next song "Super Trouper" and very energetic in the last song "On and on and on" (and with her ex husband)
but the people who see it only here (and not the whole mini show) are left with the incomplete morbidity of the guitarist who wrote the song for their recently divorced ex-wife
But it's a performance of ABBA, with magnificent interpretation of Agnetha, that She knows how to transmit with Her gestures and body and facial expression the spirit and feeling of the songs (I remember Her in others songs before like "S.O.S." or "I've been waiting for You" from 1975, when She was happily married)
The lyrics is a fiction, it is not about Their real life, although it is obviously influenced by Their own experiences and the realization of the legal divorce in the middle of 1980, even though They were no longer a couple or lived together more than a year and half ago, at the end of 1978
ABBA have more than 20 worldwide hits between 1972/1982, included:
Waterloo, Fernando, Take a chance on me, Chiquitita (songs that you didn't react yet)
All these songs , and the others that you did before, are in your album recopilation GOLD (1992) that have more than 1.100 weeks at Top 100 in UK Official Charts (first group singer or artist to do it)

Unfortunately it is a lipsynced performance, as far as I know there is no recording of a live performance of this song. They might have a recording in the ABBA vault though, they did tour Japan after the song was released so it's possible they played it there. Lipsyncing was pretty much standard when marketing new songs back in those days, because you'd want the audience to hear the version they'd get if they bought the record. Also it would require an orchestra to try to replicate their music live which isn't feasible for all the tv show appearances they made. I wish there had been a live performance of it though as I personally like hearing different takes on a song from the band that created it. Not a big fan of covers by other bands in general though. But nevertheless, the fact that Agnetha was able to sing it like this in the studio is mindblowingly impressive to me. No autotune or pitch correction to help her, it's all her own skill. One of the most beautiful intros to a song ever for me, the descending melody is so nice and their voices sound angelic when they come in. Edit *Just did some digging and they actually released it after the Japan tour so they wouldn't have played it there either

Is it really that big a deal it was lip-synced? Almost all shows of the time were. I was interested in the reaction to the song.
In fact I'm more in awe of how the instruments were instrument-synced!

@lemonfreshhrob....not to mention that a big number of today's 'superstars" sing mostly 'playback" in their "live" tours. At least Abba;s '75/"77/"79/"'80(Japan)tours /"81 Dick Cavet gig was Live and non-autotuned and still sounds fine.I also wouldn't care. I also just want to share the reaction and sometimes i even only look wanna at these 4 some.Esp.Agnetha's/Frida's sight. It feels like a serotonine injection for my system.
