  • After being written off by medical professionals, Sean & Doris Miller find strength in each other to carry on their 10-year battle with schizophrenia before they find a cure through an integrative approach employed by a physician in Florida. They have now embarked on a journey to share this message of hope through their documentary. Sangeetha Nair has the story.

There are actually a hell of a lot more functioning schizophrenics out there than one would imagine.

My husband was severely schizophrenic for 24 years. He is no longer. It took him a lot of self work, a lot of absolve, a lot of inner pain, a couple years of feeling he made progress then he'd have a sudden fall back into a psychotic episode. He never gave up. He knew what the brain causes, the brain can fix. It took him about 3 years total but he is now completely symptom free and takes no meds. It can be done, but it's work. It is not easy. People just need to realize that mental illnesses are a coping mechanism (or lack of ability to cope) of the mind. You can learn, but it's a hard process and not instant.

How did he recover? Can you tell me what treatments he took? I don't like meds myself and i want to find a way to recover.

    • @MzFirezone
      @MzFirezone 7 лет назад +21

He took meds and switched meds often at first until he found which one normalized him without making him feel weird or numb. That will be different for everyone. Once he found the one that kept him in a rational mind he knew a baseline of what normal is. He went to his psychologist weekly for the first year. They worked together with a mix of CTB and traditional therapy to retrain his brain to cope effectively with stressors. After a year on meds he went off them but relapsed about 7 months later after major life stressor although he had been doing well with daily normal stresses. He went back on his meds for about 4 months and continued seeing his psychiatrist but now 1nce a month. At the end of the second year he no longer saw his psychiatrist but continued to work on his methods of coping daily and over those couple years he just gradually learnt how to deal with the things life throws at him. Sometimes he can get stressed but when he does or he feels himself revert to old patterns that would induce a psychotic episode he has to take a few days to work through them but has not had to go back on meds and has not had a episode. Meds have their place, as it is hard for someone to think critically and assess a situation effectively when their mind is spinning out of control. But over time the need for meds decreases as the brain relearns since it is clear enough to rationalize while on meds. It's sort of like learning in school.... the more you do something the more automatic it becomes, until finally it is just how your brain processes. Brains are neuroplastic. Meaning the cells die and regrow just like all other cells in your body. As they die and regrow we can either wire things to the same place again or wire them somewhere new. This is how people with severe brain damage and strokes can teach other parts of their brain to do things the damaged part used to do. Healing mental illness is the same sort of process, it is teaching a differing part of the brain to pick up a certain job. The difference is, with mental illness it is the wrong place everything wired to, which causes the lack of proper processing and coping and you need to wire it to the right place, meds keep you normalized enough to start that process and working on therapies methods help to force it to slowly rewire those things o the correct place to handle them effectively. Like a stroke victim, this is a long process, and it takes a hell of a lot of determination and constant work on your behalf. But it gets there :)

Not understanding mental health makes people affraid and assume what the media tells us despite them having a vested interest in forming opinions, i believe many people are "given up on" by others and left in the system with no hope. This for me is a great example of how hope and love can always provail. And others should try harder to achive the same. Thanks so much for shareing.

You’ve both been through so much I can relate to the lack of polish on your past battles over everything. It’s difficult to put it in perspective the best and brightest way since life was very hard to go through especially being asked to rehash everything on camera. I learned recently in my own case to give positive feedback same with counselors and physiatrists. I’m on Caplyta with my Intermentant fish and veggies and this reminds me that our gut has a brain too. So, we need to cleanse our two brains everyday as much as we can. DE food grade is less than $10 a year and is good in lemon concentration water every day for clean blood, organs and gut health. Beginning any form of walking is so healthy and will improve energy as well as good sleep along with melatonin before bed. These are my beginning steps before I’ll afford a Dr.who’ll heal the schizophrenia completely. You are an inspiration and a strong hope to many who have been diagnosed. Always give a little to get a little and keep on reaching success.

Schizophrenia is largely caused by trauma. Trauma affects both mind and body. Changing the diet is important. Dealing with the trauma is also very important.
Developing a disciplined prayer life also helps.
These things - together - (diet, trauma therapy, disciplined prayer) help a person begin to heal. I am living proof that this healing can happen. Just as this man is.
God is the Great Healer and He has given us means to heal.

Thank you so much for this. My mum is suffering from major schizophrenia since she was 50 (probably it started earlier) and is living in an permanent care facility now.. Not one of her sisters, or lifelong friends or neighbours she has been very close to for years has ever shown up to visit her (which would easily be possible) or even called me up to know about her. It's just me and her in this horrible thing. Let's suppose she had cancer.....can you even imagine the amount of phone calls, visits, tears, flowers, cards, presents she would have gotten? The stigma is so so crazy and I am really bitter when thinking about these things and people's behaviour. Anyway I so want to get my mum out there but do not have the means and possibilities to take care of her. To me it is 100% the GLUTEN in her diet that causes this and I am in a battle to fight with the authorities there to change her diet - obviously a nearly impossible thing, seen the ignorance that is out there amongst physicians. There is sooo much literature and scientific studies out there that prove a gluten-free diet to be very effective. Many Doctors such as Dr. Perlmutter and Dr. Curtis Dohan and Dr. Peter Osborne show how gluten is the cause - people get informed and get your loved ones and yourself off that deadly stuff - which causes schizophrenia in the first place. The science is out there .

The dosages are in the book. My son tried suicide less than a month ago and was catatonic and near death from being dosed with halcon by the shrinks. We started Dr Hoffer's regime 2 weeks ago. I dislike the way the psychiatric community just automatically assumes that after one psychotic episode, the person will be psychotic for the rest of their lives. For many, after that first episode they realize that the delusional thoughts are delusional, which takes the power away from them. Those beliefs become no longer fixed and technically, no longer fit the definition of a delusion. When you realize that you are experiencing hallucinations and that they are not real and are being created by your own brain, it takes away their power, and you learn to ignore them and cope with them. CBT and DBT and Mindfulness give you skills to unravel delusional thoughts and see them for what they are, and to cope with hallucinations. Those skills are much more helpful than any medications. Once a person has insight, schizophrenia can be managed without medications.

Hi, I feel you on your situation. I have been diagnosed since 2011 and its been tough. But one thing you can do is to apply for disability at the social security office. They help with a lot of the medications and hospital stays. Just take your meds for right now, and try to find some good christian friends that can pray for you and with you. And also get involved in a church and explain your situation to a Pastor, They will give you godly advice on your situation. God Bless you my friend. In Jesus name we will be healed.

Your story gave me a lot of hope! So thank you so much for this. I've watched it over and over again before. I have paranoid schizophrenia for 14 years now and am still going through it although it's a lot better than before. But my symptoms are a lot different than what other people with schizophrenia usually have. I feel this broken nerve cells or cell membranes or whatever it is that's broken, is always in my brain and the more I become fatigued the more I feel it breaking apart. I'm tired most of the time by the way and do get really tired easily. I just call it the cell membrane because I don't know what it is. It's almost like there's slimy separated jello in my brain. I was wondering if anyone has a similar experience as me and I want to know if this really is paranoid schizophrenia. Thanks for reading.

+Yuko Okuyama If you're hearing voices, you can definitely be called "schizophrenic" but try to remember that that term is only a very specific way to describe your condition to a specific set of people (doctors and medical-science).
I don't believe what is happening to you is that your brain -actually- has mush in it. I DO recognize that type of feeling though. Sometimes for me (I have schizophrenia too) it feels like the voices might be poking metal rods into my brain and raping my mind in a way. This can be very intense, but just remember that you are a spiritual warrior. You are not better or worse than the voices. You are on the same plane as them because you can communicate with them.
Have you tried relating to the voices as if they were roommates which you had to be with?

That's why I mentioned that my illness is different from other people who have schizophrenia although I am diagnozed with schizophrenia. I used to have delusions but I don't have that any more. All I have is this broken membranes or whatever it is and fatigue in my brain a lot of times. But thank you for relating to my symptoms! I'm glad that someone answered me back! Hope you fully recover too! And hope everyone out there fully recovers from these mental illnesses.

Hello fellow youtubers. I need some advice. My mom (age 52 now) was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2010. I actually dont remember if she had schizophrenia before that as well but my earliest experience with her psychotic episodes started in 2010. She has been taking Risperdal since then. She also took zyprexa and abilify in between but Risperdal suits her better. She takes 9mg Risperdone daily. She still hears voices (auditory hallucinations) 24x7 and sleeps all day and is not at all motivated to do any basic activities like brushing, bathing, etc. In her auditory hallucinations, she hears her sisters and brothers and many other family members. She laughs and cries sometimes while talking to herself. I asked her if she believes that those voices are actually true and she said "Yes those voices are real". Everytime she thinks, it’s like she is having a conversation with someone. I asked her whether she calls the voices in her head or they come on their own and she replied that they just come on their own. She says that someone she hasn't met for 30 years in real physical life asks her for money in her mind and troubles her alot. She used to believe that someone enters our house at night when we are sleeping and steals our stuff. She believes in all of this even when on medicines.
She has gained alot of weight since starting the antipsychotic medicines and also takes Thyroxine medicine in the mornings for her thyroid. She also had a tumor in her uterus bcoz of which she had her uterus + ovaries removed around 2010 itself (she was 44-45 that time). The removal of ovaries also may cause Depression and anxiety. Since I was a child, My mom used to doubt, suspect and mistrust alot before her psychotic episodes started as well. But she was very beautiful & intelligent and was a friendly teacher who the students and their parents loved a lot. I have provided as much history as possible....
The bottomline is that she has schizophrenia now and is overweight and 9mg risperdone per day isn't helping alot... I have found out from google and youtube videos about Niacin and i think i will definitely try them out. Does anyone have any advices for me on how to start her dosage of Niacin? I hope Niacin is the way to her recovery. And if it makes her better, i think I might try to reduce the dosage of risperdone and bring it to complete stop. Any advices will be very appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Please try the following vitamins and supplements plus other herbs together these will work gradually. It is difficult since you must have a close watch on progress of your patient..do not take the patient anymore to any psychiatrists, they will not help you, only they will prescribe continuously psychiatric drugs that only damaged her brain. Try these out:
      1) vit b complex with vit c in it already plus with iron - Ones a day only,
      2) vit b3 (niacin) start at 500mg - once a day
      3) magnesium glycinate - 320 mg for women and 400mg for men, taken 1cap twice a day, one should be taken at bedtime)
      4) garlic gel capsule - once a day ( be sure to monitor the patient's blood pressure)
      5) valerian root tablet at 125mg taken at bedtime,
      6) melatonin with passion flower extract. Chamomile, skullcap, hops ( I think you can find this in several supplements store) - taken also at bedtime.
Other: Turmeric tea, ginger tea, drink eight to ten glasses of water daily, teas are not included in count of plain water intake), have daily cardiovascular exercises such as Stationary bike, jogging, aerobics. Sweating is a must to do.
Foods: avoid sugar, sugary foods, less carbohydrates, no softdrinks, no any carbonated drinks. Eat only plenty of vegetables, fruits, fish rich in omega 3 such as salmon and tuna. Avoid also pastas, white bread, eat eggs but not too much.

Taper her antipsychotic medications at only 10% dose reduction rate from her current dose. Example: if 20 mg zyprexia it means 20mg x 0.10 = 2mg. So from 20mg down to 18mg only for a month and so on. However, during this period of tapering, you should incorporate the alternative I had mentioned to you.

Secondly meditatation(Read full catastrophe living, or schizophrenia books on ACT therapy), it helps with the brain too and helps with the positive symptoms like apathy. I read loving kindness meidation is said to be the most helpful. Third tell him to write a gratitude journal, this will help with the mood and lifts the spirit. Making him do all this is probably the hardest thing, but idk how let him know it's his life he's dealing with.

Stay strong and think what would Jesus do. Keep the serenity prayer in your heart. Never give up on anyone if they need help help. Do not think there's no danger theres more danger in the person hurting there self. Any stress can cause most ppl get this in there early teens threw the late 20s if I'm not mistaking. I also believe that alot of cases have been miss diagnosed. I think the generalised anxiety may be a big part of it because if ppl have this it looks like they have schizophrenia in my opinion. I have a question back tho. Do you try treating in the beginning or do you let them make the choice to try medications that are available for generalised anxiety instead of for schizophrenia or do you just let them rack there brains tryna figure it out. I hate how it changes there out look on old memorys. The thought of everybody in the word has been fucking with ya would dive anyone mad you would think.

Teresa, I'd suggest you contact Dr.Colbert directly in order to find a nutritional method that works for your son. Each person is different. This story was meant to highlight the fact that there is hope and not to sell anything. Dr. Colbert's website is drcolbert.com/

+Sangeetha Nair By cured do you mean he no longer hears voices or that he no longer suffers from the supposed "cognitive deficit" associated with the term "schizophrenia"?

So you never took medication or what did it help to heal and recover? I must know. Thanks.

Sean Miller I purchased and was a little bit disappointed with your movie. It didn't feel like you actually knew what truly cured you. (I am schizophrenic as well, still wrestling with the idea that this is something that would require medication in the first place.)
But I still received hope from your movie nonetheless because you feel healed regardless of how it happened.
