I don't believe this. What about people being born who will eventually grow up to have their own battles and need self help? There will always be people needing self improvement. Also you could say this about any industry, dentist fixing your teeth, hospital treating you, car salesman selling a car. That person might be okay today (new car, teeth fixed and no mental battles), but tomorrow their car might break down and their battles might continue.

I actually am a UK registered Chiropractor, and like you, I believe that my job is to get my patients as biomechanically stable as I can, as quickly as I can, and then give them the tools to improve, via home exercises, that are prescribed in much the same fashion as you, and functionally assessed 1month to 6 weeks later. I’m sure my bank manager would love it if my patients all attended weekly for the rest of their lives, but that would be morally repugnant, ethically indefensible, and it’s not the way I’ve run my (successful) practice for the last 20years. I have no shortage of patients, GP and other health care professional referrals, and , yes, we have to pay the bills like everyone else, but I don’t personally know ANY registered chiropractors that would fleece their patients. (Apart from the moral questionability, to be generous, it’s not a good business practice. Nobody would refer, feel satisfied with their treatment, or even come back after being disillusioned.). I don’t think you could do that for long. At least, not in this country, where we’re pretty tightly regulated. I do understand that may not be the case in the rest of the world, though….
Lmao, telling people to sleep 8+ hours, exercise, eat clean, journal, meditate and be social sure wouldn’t give them the framework to have a nice life or at the very least improve drastically therefore not needing self improvement content anymore. Sure buddy
“Spend more time looking outside” - really resonates with me. Went through my own “self improvement” phase at 18. Spent days upon days consuming countless videos, books and podcasts. I barely actually changed my habits and honestly just felt worse about myself. Later I phased out the bullshit and started putting myself out there and just doing shit like solo trips etc. I learned much more, picked up hobbies and developed a real passion for life.
If you picked up some actual valuable info along the way then that’s ok too. It’s not a bad thing to want to learn even some very basic stuff. It’s when we start telling ourselves “I’m nothing unless I resemble this guru person” that it’s probably a waste of time
Usually those books and podcast (least the ones I read and listen to) will always encourage doing the work you are learning. For instance, if maybe you feel lonely, they will encourage you to also go outside and put yourself out there. I'm reading a book related to the topic of fear and how 50 cent has this trait of fearlessness (it isn't not having fear that is never going to be a thing). One thing brought up was how the ones who learn this are the ones who practice pushing through the fear instead of running away. An example would be when I fell off my skateboard going down a slightly downward hill while pushing too much that I was going insanely fast. My wheels caught my deck (the trucks that hold the wheels together will wobble if the speed is too much for it's tightness) and I fell. I was hurt for a few minutes but pushed on and still practiced since I wasn't hurt and still wanted to skate (also believing that stopping it while only slightly hurt was not a good excuse at all). I end up going down that hill again but without pushing the board so much. I pushed through the fear of having fallen off this hill I went down countless times and conquered it. I did it again two weeks later when the weather was better and my knees were healed up. There is a verse in Meditations by Marcus Aurelius that expresses this and I think he does a bit more throughout his journals. He tells himself to put the books down and experience life. Basically, don't confine yourself to just books. Reading, watching videos, hell even going on social media is fine. Just don't do it so much that you neglect so much other aspects of your life. While you are reading on how others have achieved success, you could be doing.
One of my favourite Instagram creators said, "self improvement is not the solution. Character development is where it's at". This video indirectly says the same thing, and i love it.
Amen to that, I aim to be 1% better everyday if I can through working out, trying out my hobbies, making sure I better myself, etc. It can be difficult maintaining progress, but that's part of it. Cheers!
I feel like you put a lot of things into words that I've been slowly learning and had in the back of my mind. My favorite thing was the whole: Stop caring what other people think of me and shift it to stop imagining that everyone else is always thinking of me. I think there is a lot of wisdom in that that probably tackles a lot of modern day low self esteem.

Perhaps by modern standards he's more of a speculative socio psychologist than a philosopher, but then many of the renowned ancient "philosophers" didn't write about/study "the fundamental nature of reality and knowledge" (a good definition of philosophy) either.
"Spend less time looking in and more time looking out". As a full time single dad who sits at home nearly all evenings, i often find myself in this vicious cycle of introspection and over analyizing. Some of it may be attributed to my ADHD. This reptitive cycle has often led me to exhaustion, as well as how i find it difficult to put emotions into word. One of the reasons why i started training again (this time using the Push app, Thank you Delaney!) is because i got demons to fight, while also trying to get over a person i fell in love with. In my experience dealing with ADHD paralysis, and getting through challenging phases for the past months or more, hitting the gym again are one of the ways i can improve myself. As a 28 year old father i'm still young in some eyes, but i know from my own experience how dangerous "self improvement" can become if taken too far. Thank you for being so laid back while providing your perspective in a easy to digest. Your content is valuable and very often interesting ❤

The part where Joe talked about how when you get trapped in the whole self improvement cycle, you end up creating this life where you're inner monologuing and narrating your life from one event to the next really resonated with me. I've found it best to be present and in the now with what I care about. Really great video.
The point about thinking about self improvement is so true. It’s so easy to get caught in the trap of planning/envisioning improvement, when in reality you just need to get out and start doing stuff.

I wholeheartedly agree - I got lost in the self-improvement trap myself. I made a video recently about 'Monk Mode' that seems to have gripped a lot of young guys, but I think like you said, instead of spending your 20s working, go out and experience the world and do stuff. You'll then have a far better idea of what it is you actually want to work on. Thanks for being sound.

I got burned out from self improvement after one of my favorite self improvement guys (Hamza) just started saying polarizing statements for the sake of views and money. At this point, I'm going to do my own thing instead of trying to become a generic hustle bro
Hamza really did become one with the radical hustle bros, he used to be a beacon of hope in the industry, a genuine guy who doesn't sell courses or talks down on women, just uplifts the bros, and now he's become all that and much more and much worse, pretty much one of the tater tots, such a downfall, we got this however, we can do this on our own.
This is the first "self-improvement" video I've watched in a couple of months. Actually,, one of my new years resolutions was to stop watching these videos about certain topics that I "struggle" with and videos about how to become better in whatever kind of way. I realized that focusing on myself, focusing on "improving" just makes me feel like I lack in so many different areas in life. I, now, have to work on being easy on myself because this idea of improving myself has become such a big factor in my life. It's about finding your own path and getting certain basic things right, I think. Thank you for this video!

Self-improvement by all means is a category in which products are sold. A lot of what you've said revolves around the idea of just doing practical things. That's spot on, but it's actually quite difficult to learn new things and do things to “improve” - so what happens? People don't do it and they look for answers. Enter your “self-improvement” products (retreats, courses, classes, medicine, etc., etc.) In an attempt to be better I think we've confused efficiency with cutting corners - it doesn't work.
class video Joe, I’m thinking a lot more people are waking up to the work less way of life, you hit the nail on the head on realising what level of wealth actually makes you happy, if most people get out of the social media facade of more materialistic things = better life, people can truly find that they don’t need as much as they think to be happy…I’m saying this after changing careers and halving my income for more leisure time and less work related stress, I’m happier than ever.
I feel like the self-improvement game can be a trap that impacts you from the day-to-day complexities of life. One should strive to be better on the daily but not to an extreme degree. Life is already tough enough, you don't need Instagram gurus telling you to completely revamp your life around 24/7.

Good, Joe. Adding a gloss - since the start of the year we have been bombarded by the media telling us how to lose weight … get fit .. get EVERYTHING we want in 2024. None of them ask “How do you feel?” Fact is, setting aside all the media crap telling me I’m fat, poor, ugly and lazy I actually feel great!
I’m grateful for your vids and all the wisdom you’ve passed down to me bro. If you focus on self improvement too much, it creates anxiety, which I’ve found to be the case with myself at least. Some anxiety is good, as it gets you to do the things that you know you should be doing. However, a big problem arises when you’ve done all that you can do, and you still don’t feel like you’re enough, you never enjoy being present in the moment and never enjoy the journey itself, which is life. I’ve got the physique of my dreams and I’m constantly setting and hitting goals, but I find myself telling myself that I “should” or “must” do things, rather than reframing it into a playful “I want to hit this goal” or “I get to do this”. Maybe a video on this would help.
Fiction, specifically Anime/Manga, really helped me become more interested and learn from characters. Some incredible stories can be found in them and they are fun 😊
I like the more abstract videos just as much as the fitness content. And you have made a great deal of fitness content. So this is like your Super Saiyan 3 mode. A natural evolution from a discussion about tracking macros and caloric deficit to a broader topic about why do we even want to be fit? And what makes us happier? I remember when you started these videos about "peak happiness." I enjoy these so much. They are more about quality of life and not just look at how shredded I am. I appreciate them because they show you aren't just another content creator finding ways to rephrase the same 5 topics you have done for years. Too much internal investigation is the worst form of procrastination. Too much time wasted in thoughts, get to actually know yourself by doing things, either with others or solo Try new things, do something uncomfortable and find out who you are right now. If you find something you don’t like through that process, it’s lived experience rather than thinking you don’t like something

There's a great video on big think channel about the pursuit of happiness and how to create an 'anti fragile' mind. The principle of that video is similar, saying that the pursuit of happiness should not be the focus but rather creating a mind and life that is not only resistant to 'depression' but able to bounce back when sad things (that will inevitably happen) occur in our lives. For me 'self improvement' has become this trap of information that seems to take centre stage, when in reality it should not be the focus (especially for someone like me in their early 20s) but rather a product of just growing up as is said in the video.
You're a cool and funny dude, and I appreciate your vids. Albeit, your long hair days were not my fave...but that doesn't matter. I appreciate you're ability to grow into your own self understanding. It makes the content way cooler.
Self improvement is focused on teaching the basics. Otherwise, where do you learn them? The curse of knowledge is powerful in these comments. Introspection answers the questions that you cannot find externally. The fundamental question that I believe most people are asking is why? Why do I care what people think? Why do I make promises and not keep them? Why can’t I commit? If you don’t do the internal work, how do you plan on fixing the problems? If you don’t know the cause, how can you find a cure? Yoooo I used the same blank canvas metaphor in a late night chat with my sister years ago and we still reference it to keep each other grounded 😁💖 cool. I knew you were a real one.
I think the main thing is just find a hobby i know a lot of people go "I don't have time" but everyone has time for at least 1 hobby that seems interesting it can be as simple as "I kinda wanna learn guitar" then get a cheap guitar and start it doesn't need to be super expensive just try things out see what you enjoy note learning things sucks, but it's time/effort in accounts for all your progress so if you do really enjoy it or wanna learn it do it. We will always make time for what we wanna do even if we "don't have time" you don't need to do it all the time just whatever feels right. I feel a lot of people don't pick up hobbies out of fear of failure or the whole "an old dog can't learn new tricks" you absolutely can learn at any age and failure is part of learning you cannot grow or learn without failing first and realizing what went wrong I've met a ton of people that are unhappy and when i talk to them about their day it's "I go to work, go home and watch tv" that's why. working out is a great mental clearer and helps loads with depression and picking up a hobby that hobby can even be working out granted i think everyone should but picking up a hobby will significantly help with stress can also cause stress so when it does take a break but end it on a good note so you don't hate your hobby or start to dislike it because ending on a bad note makes it harder to go back to

Hamza really did become one with the radical hustle bros, he used to be a beacon of hope in the industry, a genuine guy who doesn't sell courses or talks down on women, just uplifts the bros, and now he's become all that and much more and much worse, pretty much one of the tater tots, such a downfall, we got this however, we can do this on our own.

This is the first "self-improvement" video I've watched in a couple of months. Actually,, one of my new years resolutions was to stop watching these videos about certain topics that I "struggle" with and videos about how to become better in whatever kind of way. I realized that focusing on myself, focusing on "improving" just makes me feel like I lack in so many different areas in life.
I, now, have to work on being easy on myself because this idea of improving myself has become such a big factor in my life. It's about finding your own path and getting certain basic things right, I think. Thank you for this video!

Self-improvement by all means is a category in which products are sold. A lot of what you've said revolves around the idea of just doing practical things.
That's spot on, but it's actually quite difficult to learn new things and do things to “improve” - so what happens? People don't do it and they look for answers.
Enter your “self-improvement” products (retreats, courses, classes, medicine, etc., etc.)
In an attempt to be better I think we've confused efficiency with cutting corners - it doesn't work.

class video Joe, I’m thinking a lot more people are waking up to the work less way of life, you hit the nail on the head on realising what level of wealth actually makes you happy, if most people get out of the social media facade of more materialistic things = better life, people can truly find that they don’t need as much as they think to be happy…I’m saying this after changing careers and halving my income for more leisure time and less work related stress, I’m happier than ever.

None of them ask “How do you feel?” Fact is, setting aside all the media crap telling me I’m fat, poor, ugly and lazy I actually feel great!

I’m grateful for your vids and all the wisdom you’ve passed down to me bro. If you focus on self improvement too much, it creates anxiety, which I’ve found to be the case with myself at least. Some anxiety is good, as it gets you to do the things that you know you should be doing. However, a big problem arises when you’ve done all that you can do, and you still don’t feel like you’re enough, you never enjoy being present in the moment and never enjoy the journey itself, which is life. I’ve got the physique of my dreams and I’m constantly setting and hitting goals, but I find myself telling myself that I “should” or “must” do things, rather than reframing it into a playful “I want to hit this goal” or “I get to do this”. Maybe a video on this would help.

I like the more abstract videos just as much as the fitness content. And you have made a great deal of fitness content. So this is like your Super Saiyan 3 mode. A natural evolution from a discussion about tracking macros and caloric deficit to a broader topic about why do we even want to be fit? And what makes us happier? I remember when you started these videos about "peak happiness." I enjoy these so much. They are more about quality of life and not just look at how shredded I am. I appreciate them because they show you aren't just another content creator finding ways to rephrase the same 5 topics you have done for years. There's a great video on big think channel about the pursuit of happiness and how to create an 'anti fragile' mind. The principle of that video is similar, saying that the pursuit of happiness should not be the focus but rather creating a mind and life that is not only resistant to 'depression' but able to bounce back when sad things (that will inevitably happen) occur in our lives.
For me 'self improvement' has become this trap of information that seems to take centre stage, when in reality it should not be the focus (especially for someone like me in their early 20s) but rather a product of just growing up as is said in the video.

Self improvement is focused on teaching the basics. Otherwise, where do you learn them? The curse of knowledge is powerful in these comments. Introspection answers the questions that you cannot find externally. The fundamental question that I believe most people are asking is why? Why do I care what people think? Why do I make promises and not keep them? Why can’t I commit? If you don’t do the internal work, how do you plan on fixing the problems? If you don’t know the cause, how can you find a cure? Just my thoughts. Great video. I’m a new follower. Love the workout stuff too

I think the main thing is just find a hobby i know a lot of people go "I don't have time" but everyone has time for at least 1 hobby that seems interesting it can be as simple as "I kinda wanna learn guitar" then get a cheap guitar and start it doesn't need to be super expensive just try things out see what you enjoy note learning things sucks, but it's time/effort in accounts for all your progress so if you do really enjoy it or wanna learn it do it. We will always make time for what we wanna do even if we "don't have time" you don't need to do it all the time just whatever feels right. I feel a lot of people don't pick up hobbies out of fear of failure or the whole "an old dog can't learn new tricks" you absolutely can learn at any age and failure is part of learning you cannot grow or learn without failing first and realizing what went wrong I've met a ton of people that are unhappy and when i talk to them about their day it's "I go to work, go home and watch tv" that's why.
working out is a great mental clearer and helps loads with depression and picking up a hobby that hobby can even be working out granted i think everyone should but picking up a hobby will significantly help with stress can also cause stress so when it does take a break but end it on a good note so you don't hate your hobby or start to dislike it because ending on a bad note makes it harder to go back to
