    Other e-ink youtubers, who purchase and review all of the new e-ink devices, sometimes seem a bit enamored with the e-ink lifestyle, which makes me skeptical about the generalizability of their evaluations. By contrast, your evaluations seem firmly grounded in considerations of "is this actually better than a normal computer for getting things done", and that is why I find them useful.

      I appreciate you taking the time to watch! ..and love to hear that my videos have been useful for you.
      I agree with your observation and have found that it's widespread across an array of tech review niches on RUclips (not just e-ink tablets). I think a lot of the units you see are received (at no cost) for the purpose of reviewing. This phenomenon serves as a primary motivator for me in creating this channel and continuing to make videos - I hope to bring a level of "attention to detail and familiarity with the device from actually using it" and "integration into my routine" (determining if these devices and gadgets can actually serve a purpose in my day-to-day life).. over trying to push products for sales and to get more free stuff to keep my loop going.
      I have received similar feedback and observations in multiple comments across my 3 videos of the TUC; it's good to know that this style of video is appreciated.

    I am a student and I prefer to use electronic copies of books and take notes on the same device. I’ve been using a Galaxy Tab S6 for a little over 2 years now but I just put an order for one of these. This video helped confirm that I’ll have all the functionality I need from the tablet I’m currently using and more. It’s hard to find this information in one place so thank you!
    One feature I’ll be using a lot, if this particular tablet has it, is the marquee screenshot in the navigation ball. I like to take sectioned screenshots of course material and insert it directly into the notes.

      Definitely come back to let me know how you get along with the Tab Ultra C after a couple weeks. I'm curious how your use case will pan out; it will definitely work, but due to the limited "canvas" size, you will likely end up with a lot of "pages" of notes.. which may be awesome for you to help keep your notes more organized.

    You truly are my favorite new RUclipsr!!! Your videos have been so informative. I have a request for future content that I hope you will consider 🙏
    I am a self/community taught developer-in-training (former teacher and current stay-at-home mom), who was recently diagnosed with ADHD. My greatest challenge thus far has been establishing systems for studying and organizing notes and resources now that they are almost exclusively in the digital realm.
    It would be wonderful to see your strategies, systems, and tools to manage your digital workflow (your preferred apps, other digital tools, methods of visualizing tasks and responsibilities so nothing gets lost or forgotten, etc).
    Thanks for the great content!

    • @aline.tech.reviews

      I truly appreciate that! It means a lot. =)
      First, congrats and great job on taking on the beast of self-taught development! What language(s) are you learning?!
      I definitely know and understand the struggle of establishing systems and organizational pathways.. and am still learning as I go. For example, I had to implement new systems just recently for all these RUclips video / audio / thumbnail / description / etc. files - a new headache of trying to organize 100's of files and hard drives.
      I'd love to cover the topics you mentioned, as they are a big part of my routine and part of what keeps me "ticking" as a human. I plan to release a future RUclips channel that will cover digital productivity and small business tools exactly in this way!
      At the moment, however, I'm a one man show and it's tough to fit ALL the content I want into my schedule. I hold the role of Director at my career job which requires 55-70 hours/week. I'm doing my best to pump out as much quality content as I can in my spare times in hopes of generating secondary income so that I can take on less responsibilities in my career and focus on more videos as you have suggested.
      I'll definitely keep your comment top of mind for future videos - especially when I notice myself using a piece of tech or a tool that I feel is worthy of sharing with the community at large. I'm most likely to post this type of stuff on my "Community" feed here on RUclips for now until I am able to have additional time to push out extra videos.
      Really appreciate your kind words and look forward to exploring digital productivity with you in the future!

  • @Maisonier
    @Maisonier 10 месяцев назад +5

    In my case, I'm using the Onyx Boox Note Air 1 connected to a 5GHz WiFi. I noticed more lag when using the 2.4GHz frequency. Moreover, I've positioned my router nearby, as even with the 5GHz connection, lag becomes noticeable if the signal strength is poor. I've also made adjustments, setting the speed to "A2" for regular use in the e-ink center.
    Personally, I experimented with the split-screen functionality, but I found the screen size to be a tad too small (about the size of an A5 paper, for those unfamiliar). As a result, I've come to the conclusion that I should invest in another e-ink device specifically for reading, while leaving the one I currently have dedicated to writing and note-taking. Regrettably, I haven't yet managed to gather the funds for an additional device, and I'm torn between opting for a Tab X for reading or going for the Ultra C with its color capabilities.
    Your video was excellent, as always. I'm waiting your next release and I'm already subscribed. I'll be sure to share it as well. Thank you.

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  10 месяцев назад +2

      Interesting; do you have any indication of how far away you can get with your Note Air 1 before the signal becomes weak vs. your smart phone or other compatible device? Is it similar or are you finding noticeably poor performance from the Note Air?
      I feel the same regarding size of the screen for split-screen - it is a tad small. It's another scenario where a Tab "X" C would come in clutch. That extra 3" of screen would make a major difference in usability!
      I think if you're going for mostly reading, and you won't be heavily invested in graphic novels, then the Tab X is probably the way to go. I definitely understand the difficulty of finding funds - these devices are ridiculously expensive. It may be wise to hold off some months to see if Onyx plans to release a 13" color version - as that will reduce the cost of the default Tab X (and will cause an influx of folks selling their used Tab X for cheaper so they can upgrade).
      I truly appreciate that - thank you for taking the time to watch and comment with your experience and thoughts! It means a lot.

    I really wish you could dual screen the notes app on both sides, so you could refer to one note while writing on the other.

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  5 месяцев назад +1

      Agreed! I tried this as there are apps that will let you "clone" or run "dual-app copies" of other apps, but because the Notes app seems to be internal it can't be accessed/copied by those apps.

      @@aline.tech.reviewsSo I bought one and have turned it.
      I found the small delay between an action (finger swipe etc) and the effect to be too much. The screen is quite gray in comparison to the scribe. I expected this, but it was too much. The battery seemed to tick down quite quickly too as the light needs to be on.
      I went into it with my eyes open, but the device just didn’t do enough for me to justify the expenditure.
      I’m glad I bought from Amazon but found out too late that although the tablet was returnable, the keyboard was not unless it was defective. I have sold it on privately but at a loss.
      Hoping by mentioning it that others might avoid my mistake.

      Update. I missed the Tab Ultra C and so bought a Tab Ultra. The screen is much “whiter” and the battery life is very good. I like almost everything about it. I don’t love the 227 PPI vs the 300 on the kindle scribe. I also cant use my university email on outlook on the device, which also can’t find the university wifi network meaning I have to use my phone hotspot. Ultimately I have also returned that as right now my iPad and surface pro do everything i need.

    I would love to see a laptop with a transflective layer that can be turned on and off, like some smartwatches do.
    it would be awesome to go into the sunlight and the screen flicks into "ultra readability" mode where a screen like the pebble time come in and turn the laptop into this amazing outdoor laptop
    we absolutely have the technology, it just feels like companies are not trying to make something truly unique.
    I do personally think that for things like laptops, e-ink is not the answer, it's transflective adaptive LCDs
    the last device to do this was the OLPC XO. I think that it could make a huge comeback, especially with our modern tech, where we have transflective color LCD's like the pebble time.

    Hi Thanks for your video. Since we have to use the frontlight to max capacity due to inherent grey screen. Do you think it's similar to led screens. I don't own any eink Device but looking for one to reduce eye strain. Do you still recommend this device for reducing eye strain?

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  9 месяцев назад

      Hello, and thanks for watching!
      Yes, I do. Even with the backlight at 100%, this reduces my eye strain. I don't know the science behind why, but the effect is instant.. if my eyes start to hurt at my computer scree, I can simply pull out this device and keep working without pain. It has been extremely useful in that regard and is probably the best thing about the device in my opinion.
      It is the primary reason I would suggest anyone buy it - if eye strain is not a problem then I would suggest a Galaxy Tab or iPad, but if you have eye strain then this device is perfect.

    Thanks for the reviews of the device. Can boox drop be disabled? Do you do any programming, database or remote terminal work on the ultra c? How does something like vs code look?

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  10 месяцев назад +2

      Happy to help, and thank you for watching!
      The BOOX Drop application has a "terminate" icon in the top right of it to terminate the connection. I have not found any native way to permanently disable it (it seems to turn itself back on eventually or whenever you accidentally open the Boox Drop app - which can't be uninstalled natively). If you are logged in to the device, their website version is always open (regardless if you terminated that connection).. but it at least requires a login! Your best way to combat this is likely to install a firewall and block that port+web connection.
      For programming, I have tested out VS code through the virtual monitor Spacedesk - it works well in light mode but there is a lot of text ghosting you have to get used to.. and the mouse lag is real. If you are used to touch input in your code editor it may prove to be productive. It's hard for me to say I'd pull this out to code on because I expect my IDEs to be extremely responsive and the TUC adds a bit of latency to most tasks. If you would like me to download and try out specific apps let me know and I will do that for you!

    Does this Boox device have the "Speech to Text" feature, which converts speech to text, like the Bigme device has?

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  4 месяца назад +1

      It does! I believe this is a feature that is built into Android and can be customized, so you could use a host of keyboards or TTS engines to get the one you prefer... and use it in any app. I presume this works on any Android modern e-ink tablet with the customization option of keyboard.
      I've used the Boox version built into the default Onyx keyboard/Notes app as well as the Google version and both work well. The default Boox one is accurate and quick. I use it sometimes when I'm in the middle of writing and get hungry, I can place it on my counter and talk to it while I'm preparing food. It also has the opposite, text to speech, when reading documents via the Google TTS engine - turning your documents into audio books.
      I have the Bigme Inknote+ on my desk here for reviewing but I have not yet fully tested it. I hope to have a review out the first week of April here and will have more experience with their version directly.. but I presume it will be the same as any.

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  10 месяцев назад +1

      I appreciate that!
      I do not have any definite information on the battery or implementation there, but I will reach out to Onyx support on our behalf to see if they will provide any details. I do know Onyx is very specific on their suggestions for charger types - so for the tab that is 5V 3A (or higher) - as they have repeated it in many support threads.
      Technically speaking, no battery is 100% safe - especially if you have bad luck of the draw. Generally speaking, though, in today's age there's a lot of safety mechanisms built in to prevent things like overcharging, overvolting, overheating, etc. and that risk is massively reduced. It's to a point of commonality that I don't even worry about it anymore.
      I leave mine charging overnight whenever I'm at 30% or less. The Boox hardware + build quality gives me confidence enough that this thing isn't going to blow up in my sleep. We'd also know by now if Boox devices were blowing up all over the world.
      I have not seen any smart charging settings or noticed it smart charging.. so at worst you'd be degrading your battery a little more quickly (but again, it's one of those things I don't think you'd notice an impact from for many years out even if it was tricking up every virtual 0.01%). I will ask this in my support request though!

    Very informative video, appreciated.
    06:00 - Though I should point out that Supernote does run on Android, and owning an A5X I'm holding out for the A4X2 available soon... so long as it has a split-screen function, which I feel confident it will.
    One of the things that concerns me about the Tab Ultra C is the longevity of the battery, and if it can be replaced. I mean, I have to wonder how quickly you burn through a charge when the settings are set to a level when you get good [not necessarily great] performance, and then how many cycles the battery has, which is the very reason why I haven't entirely written off purchasing the soon to be available... Supernote A5X2 instead of the A4x2.... because it will include the ability to replace the battery without dismantling the unit as we used to be able to do with our computers, now so long ago.
    Anyway, again... great video which expounds the practical use of the Tab Ultra C better than any video I've seen this far.

      @aline.tech.reviews  10 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you for taking the time to watch and provide an insightful comment!! I truly appreciate it.
      RE: Supernote - as far as I'm aware it's a custom OS that is Android-based (using a no-longer-supported version of Android), and lacks the ability to install Android / third-party apps (without working around the kernel as intended). Technically Android, but lacking the ability to install apps, and lacking the productivity features like split-screen mode, etc. (which is why I didn't count it in my categorization here).
      RE: Battery - I believe it's a similar situation to most smartphones in today's world, unfortunately. =( You can't easily get the battery replaced yourself without voiding the warranty. Boox has in the warranty notes that : "Faulty device caused by dismantling and repairing without permission from Onyx." - which means you would have to e-mail them to get a valid replacement. It seems to be sandwiched in there like a phone and the screen is flexible/fragile enough that I would be afraid to perform that myself (whereas with my smartphone I feel comfortable doing so).. Depending on what country you are in, it may be difficult to ship it to where they need to repair it. I haven't had to go through this process, but I am e-mailing Onyx this weekend to ask about their battery's smart charging capabilities and manufacturer, so I will add this inquiry to that e-mail and let you know their reply!
      In my full review, I have a chapter dedicated to testing the battery drain % per hour through a handful of use-case scenarios. I'm typically burning at 10% for light writing use/handwriting and anywhere from 13-16% when managing projects, switching apps, and split-screening to write these RUclips scripts.
      Are you enjoying your A5X long-term? I am debating trying out Supernote / Remarkable / Kindle devices to provide additional reviews.

    The way you use the tablet here, meaning visability of colour and contrast looks very good. I am disapointed though, that you do not mention the battery life. I did send it back because battery is empty after 4 hours. And that is crucial for an ink tablet. The battery life on this device is not acceptable.

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  6 месяцев назад

      Hey there, per the title, this video specifically is targeted at the "6 BEST features" (aka, my 6 favorite features) of the TUC. In my full review of the device, I do perform a battery breakdown and estimates of different use case scenarios.
      If you purchased the Pro model, then its battery is even worse (I have a TUC vs TUC Pro video that addresses that) and my full TUC Pro video should be out this weekend which will also contain a battery breakdown.
      I do feel inclined to ask what you're doing to drain the battery in 4 hours - even with the TUC Pro, which has a smaller 4600mAh battery, it seams implausible to drain it naturally within 4 hours unless you are playing a game + watching a video at the same time. This suggests you may potentially have had a faulty battery.

    In addition to the Tab Ultra C, about which I feel pretty much the same as you (see my comment on your 1st vid or Reddit) I also dabble with the Kindle scribe at the moment. By far the better hardware (not considering the lack of colour) and an excellent pen writing feel and experience. The software lacks sooo many features though that it sadly currently doesn’t work for my needs at all. Nevertheless, I’ve decided to keep it in the hope that Amazon will improve the experience with the next few updates.
    P.S. I’m using OneNote on the Tab C for which Boox apparently has some optimisation tricks up their sleeves that make it quite usable… apart from the still lack of up-to-date security updates (except if you’re on the 3.4 beta which takes it to June 2023) which makes it unusable for security conscious enterprise users.

      I truly appreciate that, thank you!!
      You may have to DM me your username there so I can connect the dots! But, very interesting. I was considering buying the Kindle Scribe to do a review of it and a potential comparison to users who don't want to spend that much on the Tab Ultra/don't need the extra apps. It seemed like the "best bang for buck" currently, though as you said it does seem to be missing some quality-of-life features in the software. Assuming the device is selling and reviewing well, I presume they will keep updating it.
      Agreed I've had a good experience with OneNote in testing - though it's not a program I use regularly. I am going to play with it some more to see if I can integrate it better into my life.
      Have you updated to the latest beta firmware? I was hesitant to do so in fear of bricking the device or getting stuck in a buggy OS version and not being able to go back to a stable version (that's a big risk for a $700 device); however, I may take the leap once I'm done testing the device fully so that I can make a video on the updates.

    never seen a color eink in real life
    im just curious, do you find that the color highlighted text on a PDF would change the quality of the paragraph text? i mean, if its 150 ppi for color, and 300dpi for bw

      I don't find that it does! The black text is still sharp. It does, however, get a bit more jagged around the edges (like the opposite of anti-aliasing) because the colors go right up to the black text. Honestly, it feels like they have perfected the accuracy and layering of the two.
      If you want, go to my YT profile and click the About/Bio area and ship me an email. I can send you back a close up photo of how it looks and maybe that can help you see what I mean.

    Does the USB output audio? And does it have bluetooth for audio? I noticed Spotify in the demo.

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  5 месяцев назад +1

      A USB DAC does not work for audio - I use one as my daily driver for wireless listening and it can also be plugged in; it doesn't output audio on the TUC. I will see if I can find a passive USB-C->3.5mm adapter to test; I've read online that a passive adapter works. I might have one in an old Samsung phone box I can test.
      Yes to Bluetooth for audio; its Bluetooth can support all android compatible - including audio devices, keyboards, mice, and pointer/clicker devices.
      Battery drains quickly enough that I still use my phone for Spotify/etc. while I'm using the tablet. I'd rather not use that extra battery for bluetooth + using spotify.

    I actually intend to watch academic lecture videos, my iPad gives me eye strain. Do you think I will be able to watch and understand lecture videos as these devices have a slow refresh rate.

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  10 месяцев назад +1

      Are your lectures mostly the presenter on a stage/podium speaking to an audience, or do they heavily include whiteboard equations / PowerPoints / graphics / etc. or where the presenter is sharing their screen a lot?
      ..or do you have a lecture you could link me to (you might have to do that on Instagram because I don't think YT will allow links) and I can ship you back a quick video recording of how it looks.
      If the former, I think you can get away with it. Watching videos is "doable", for instance I watched part of my full review video of this device (the 49 minute one) and it was watchable. It's just not a great/fun experience so I wouldn't want to watch a movie or show; for learning, it works fine. The sound will be fine, it's just the video that is going to be extremely grainy, washed out, and have lots of ghosting on it.
      If the latter, it would likely be difficult to read the whiteboard text or PowerPoint presentations clearly if there is a lot of writing/movement/changes happening between slides. It's also difficult to read the text on screen shares at 1920x1080 (full screen mode).

    Is it possible to make it force black/white mode to increase DPI for 300? Or just an option to cancel color mode?

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  10 месяцев назад +2

      Not natively, no!
      As far as I understand, the b/w layer is always 300 DPI , it's only when it believes color exists that it "tunes" into 150ppi mode. The color layer is a passive layer and therefore it cannot be "turned on" or "turned off", it is only manipulated by the ink configuration of the b/w layer below.
      You can supposedly force a monochromatic filter since the device has a dedicated GPU - but it also doesn't "disable" the color layer, it just forces a monochromatic color space on the device (similar to if you put your phone in greyscale mode). There is a Reddit post that details the steps to do this. This method is generally safe as you can always put it back (though you are circumventing the Boox launcher).
      I believe the TUC only supports 16 shades of grey so curious how that will function.. the Tab Ultra has 256 shades. I will try it out this weekend and report back just to let you know how it works if you don't beat me to it.

    How did you get the colors to be that bright? Mine are barely visible even with the Vividness and Brightness at max.
    Thanks!

      Set your dark color enhancement below 30 and max the other two.

      I believe RUclips deleted my reply to your comment because I included links to the original images for you - apologies for that. If you are referring to the thumbnail, that is NOT real and is cheekily exaggerated.
      However, the video itself is not edited and what you see there is more natural. I did my best to dial in the camera settings to match what I was seeing with my own eyes in person against both my camera screens to be as neutral as possible.
      In the video, most shots are with all sliders on 0 unless you see me moving them to show how it changes things (and in the browser).
      For day-to-day use I typically run: Dark Color Enhancement: 25, Vividness: 100, Color Brightness: 5
      For web content I run: Dark Color Enhancement: 33, Vividness: 33, Color Brightness: 3
      For writing or text editing, I bump all 3 up to 100%.
      ^ it does vary between apps though, the way colors are displayed change a lot between apps.

    Another fine piece of work, thank you. QUESTION: Would I be able to create voice recordings and then be able to attach them to a document so that my students would be able to tap an icon and listen to the audio examples ? Would it also be possible to do the same with short video files ? And would I be able to do all of these things using only the Tab C with no external devices needed ? Please forgive my lack of proper "tech jargon" in framing my questions, I hope you can understand what I mean. Thank you.

      Thank you for watching!
      For a document, no; you can't insert voice recordings or videos to a document from the NeoReader app. You are limited there to highlights + annotations (comments) and writing on the document. You can highlight text and create a "link" to a notepad that contains a voice recorded note but once you export that off the device, the link+note does not come with it and is only marked as a highlight in your PDF file. The functionality you are looking for would need to be done in another PDF program like Adobe after you've exported your document from Boox software.
      For the Notes app, if you are writing a note and leave yourself a voice recording in that note you can listen to the recording on the device. HOWEVER, once you export that notepad to PDF/off the device, the voice recording is no longer attached (rather it becomes an image of the recording file, but the recording isn't actually there/you can't listen to it - so simply a visual representation that a recording existed). You would have to export the voice recording file separately and attach it to your document separately/through a different app.
      Let me know if that is helpful or if you have any additional questions! Happy to help!
