Thanks buddy, took me 10 minutes to get rid of this annoying intermittent fault that I have. Mazda shop quoted me over $1500 to repair. 1 x cable tie = 1cent
Thanks. I found I could leave the shifter plate in place and lift the entire shift unit up with the trim piece and access the release tab and tie wrap it to the side.
On a 2010 Mazda 3S will this work if I’m having an issue the engine staying on after shifting out of park ? Starts up fine no jerking previously just dies when I shift out of park any advice would be greatly appreciated, I’m googling and it’s not looking good lol I hope it’s something simple like this
Hi There, Thank you so much for sharing this informative and money saving video!!! I've recently had this very problem checked at the Paradise Motors (sales) PTY LTD Mazda Dealership in South Australia and they have quoted me $1768.25 AUD to fix the issue. The only thing that was additional to my problem is that when we shift the car in reverse we hear a loud rumbling noise which sounds like the whole motor is shaking. This goes away, once we shift it to drive. They have told me that rumbling in reverse is also a symptom of a faulty shifter assembly. I'm so impressed by your video, would like to ask whether you have come across my type of issue yourself, and can you tell me what it might be?
That rumble (or possibly a thud?) could very well be a bad transmission mount. Not 100% sure, but worth checking out. I've got a video on how to replace that. Glad this one helped you, please consider subscribing!
woow this not a rear fix this on some cheap fix. its the brake switch, i mean think bout it what sends the signal for the shifter to unlock when your press the brakes. brake switch.
oz zy I’ve been using this fix for about 5 years now with no issues, but only my wife and I have access to the car, and we are both aware of the modification. So for us, I’d say we’re safe. If I could compare it to anything, it’s as safe as a manual transmission.
That’s your neutral safety switch. More specifically it’s probably the cable on the end of it. Pop off the retaining clip that holds the cable to the switch, clean off all the rust buildup, put some grease where the cable and switch meet, and that issue should be gone forever. I did that for a 2010 Mazda6 a few months ago. There are some videos on yt for it
2012 mazda 5, Same problem. Shifter sticks to park. Sometimes if I wait a minute or 2, I can leave park. Annoying and alarming. I replaced the brake light fuse. Didn’t help. Friggin got a new battery cuz google said it could be the problem. Didn’t help. So most likely my selonoid valve in the shifter is fucked.
Hello! Im having the same problem but it only happens sometimes im wondering if it could be any other issue or would it be the exact same? My mechanic told me it is a computer issue but i dont believe it is and told me to go into mazda. Thoughts? Thanks
On 2009 and older models, it was a computer problem. Consider yourself lucky, because that pc board is really expensive. The issue on my 2010 started as intermittent, but became more frequent over time.
Hey boss. I have a 2014 Mazda 3 automatic the shifter slips out of drive when the car first starts then its fine. Would this cable tie method work? If not, how else can I adjust the shifter?
Fairly certain the cable tie can’t help you here. I’d be going to a transmission shop for an inspection/diagnosis, could get worse. I’m no transmission expert so I won’t pretend to know what’s causing that.
My problem is intermittent. Sometimes the brake lights don't turn on and it doesn't go out of park unless I do the bypass with a screwdriver but when I do that I still don't have brake lights. I changed the brake light switch and fixed the cracked wires in the trunk, it happens less now but it's still happening.
@@bkleen4674 My GF spilled an entire cup of coffee in that shift area on her 2012 mazda3,and after that we started having issues going out of park, so we also discovered the brake lights weren't working, changed the switch, still having issues going out of park, so my guess is when she spilled that coffee in there it shorted everything out, including the brake light switch, maybe even the relay which I have no idea where that even is,but spending a shixt load of money having all that fixed isn't an option so this looks like teh fix for sure.
@@will2dmax1 let me know how it goes because it wasn't the fix for me haha. I changed the brake switch and it was good for about an hour. Fixed and tested the wiring, still doesn't work. Had a mechanic look at it and he's got no clue either. I ended up parking it for now because I can't drive with no brake lights and I had another car sitting. I don't wanna put a bunch of money into fixing it without having an idea of what the issue is. I also replaced the fuses and fuse box because I saw that fixed it for one guy but it didn't for me.
Hey man, hopefully you can help: my problem is from the neutral light switch, which I was able to live with by switching to neutral before starting the engine. After lending my car to someone, they made the brake really hard by pressing it too many times (not realizing the battery died). Now I can’t use the brake to switch to neutral & start my car. Do you know how to make the pedal soft again without turning the car on?
BoyKing MB over by the shifter there’s an emergency release, put a thin screwdriver down the hole and push down gently until you can shift into neutral.
@@ambrosiotorres3387 in this case it’s the solenoid that moves the white plastic tab when you press the brake pedal. On many cars that piece can be replaced on its own, but not with this car.
Not likely. When you’re in neutral you’ve already moved the shifter past the shift interlock solenoid. Good chance it’s the neutral safety switch on the transmission.
Mike Edwards no, I haven’t had the pleasure of doing one yet. 1A has a video on how to replace it on a 1st gen Mazda6, it used same part as the 3 so it shouldn’t be too different.

Exact same problem, wont shift out of park, once started. will try it out today, and take all out for dinner as suggested.
Done... took 30 mins and saved me a grand on a 4 grand car... big thanks... if in dfw do join us for the dinner today.
Would’ve loved to do bbq but I’m about 22 hours away
Thanks for this.

It's a solution to a problem. It wasn't the brake switch.
This doesn't affect the way it drives right? Does this mean it won't ever lock, like at all?
Doesn't affect the way it drives at all. All this does is let you shift from park to reverse without having to step on the brake pedal.
will this fix cause the brake lights not to work ?@@416diy

You think this would work on a Mazda 9 08
I'd be lying if I told you I knew, you'll have to take the cover off the shifter and see if it has a similar plastic latch.
