- I will show you what to do if your car is stuck in the park position. The shift lock override slot is the main component that controls the locking and unlocking of the shifter. Vehicles may get stuck in park if the vehicle ignition switch, the brake light/stop light switch or the shift interlock solenoid fail. When one of these components fail you may not be able to move the shifter out of park. Additionally, if your vehicle's battery is dead, the shifter will be stuck in Park. Follow these steps to release a stuck shifter. This is for automatic vehicles only! All Make & Model Vehicles.
1) Set the emergency brake.
2) Locate the shift lock override slot located on the shifter console near the shifter lever. Normally, the slot is plugged with a small plastic cap. Remove the cap.
3) Insert a small screwdriver, nail file, key or similarly shaped object into the override slot, push down and hold.
4) While continuing to hold down the shift override mechanism, depress the brake pedal.
5) Now, grasp the shifter, push in the release button located on the shifter as you normally do and then move the shifter to the desired gear. If you've completed these steps with the engine off, move the shifter to the Neutral position to start the engine.

Great video! It is frightening not to get your car out of park. It happened to my 2007 Corvette. Unfortunately, GM did not think of the safety release hole. However, I learned you can put ignition in Acc. Mode without foot on brake and then move shifter to N.
Just as I was getting ready to rip the cover off the steering column and look for a problem with my shift-linkage . . . I decided to see if RUclips had a solution.

I have a brand new mitsubishi outlander fresh out the showroom 4 weeks old and I was BAFFLED that it wouldn't go into gear when I started it.

thank you for sharing this i knew my shifter gear was bad and one morning turn my car did not move or go reverse. i was able to change the shifter gear but do not move at all so i think is the solenoid needed to be change aslo change oil transmission fluid
