Andy Nguyen that's some straight-up racist shit to say you're telling me just because this kid's got a dad and his dad's got $300 worth of shop equipment that that makes him privileged special or something better than any other black kid the color of your skin doesn't dictate the quality of life that you have the quality of life that you have depends on what you're willing to put into your own life educate yourself and Rise Above
Looks like you had a great crew helping along the way. It is great to see your family coming together to get the project completed and spend some quality time together.
I think it's awesome how his dad worked with him on this. You can always tell a great dad because he'd rather build a skateboard with his son, than play golf with his buddies every day.
Excellent video!! Cudos to your Dad and Grampa for helping. You'll never forget that board and years from now you can brag to any kids you might have that you and your dad made that board.
I love the way the father works with his son to make the board and get familiar with tools and stuff. Even the grandpa helps! That's is the meaning of a family. I didn't raised with a father or a grandfather but I can feel the magic of this! Be proud of your folks and by the way... this is a fantastic board :)
EXCELENTE!!! what I found most appealing in this video (apart for the outstanding final product) is the fact of three generations of a family coming up together to work on something just for the fun of it. I think this video represent the true american spirit and man willingness. I loved it!!!! hope you and your dad find another project to do together and please post it on youtube.
your so lucky!.., because you have a cool dad that have a time to bond with you in making this board.., i'm just too unfortunate that my dad is not cool as your dad.., nice build!
doesn't matter if you snapped it or not. having an awesome grandpa and dad to help you built it, that's what most important. you can say that i envy you, in a good way, of course :)
Wohohohoo what a beautiful baby you just made born. I would like to wish you to enjoy it but I'm sure that you already do. Great job all of you, that's awesome to see a little bit of cohesion inside a family !
When I made mine I used a foam mold 7 layers of oak 3 lateral grain 4 horizontal and a vacuum bag. It turned out awesome. Nothing better than the feel of your own board.
if you wanted to do this I recommend more Veneers. but for a really good quality board I suggest you save up and buy one if possible. the investment is worth it!
Great video on the subject. This is the best and most helpful video I've found so far and probably the one I'll use to guide me in making my board. But just out of curiosity, how much pressure did you have the board under when it snapped? Was it during a sharp stressful turn? I just don't want to go through the trouble and snap the board.
Gave me a new idea for pressing the board thanks! Its way simpler than mine and seems to work better, and for everyone commenting with prices of tool, we at Owl City have employees who also work at hardware store and you guys are way off. Granted you don't need to use a car for a weight, but what you have on hand works.
good work little man, turned out really nice! spending time with your family, learning new skills, and creating some functional all in one, more kids your age need to take a page out of that book!
That's a beautiful board man, great job. After I get a job I plan to build a custom downhill board over summer, thanks for the video it will help a lot.
i have done a similar project, its damn hard to get a good result but so worth it! You get so much more attached to something you've made yourself than something you've bought :D
Not really its like 100 for lumber 50-70 for trucks and paint and stuff was free so no it wouldnt cost more especially since he made a nice quality board (though he should have used bamboo)it costs way less with most good quality pre built boards costing upwards of 300 bucks
Zach Krantz maybe building a long board saves u less but ik that my long board and set up is around 500$ and I can guarantee that my long board and everything will be better than this (no hate just saying ahaha)
Ya but I'm just saying the quality of my board and even if I was pricey I'd rather have trust worthy than just saving money and getting something that not as good or last as long cus I'm really happy with my landyacths caliber trucks and blood orange wheels with an extra set of bear 50 trucks and loaded racing gloves (my dad paid for my shit) but point is I'd rather have a pricey reliable board than a chince board that'll last maybe a year
So you build boards for a living? Poor customers i must say. Crossgraining is the most stupid idea you could possibly have. Wood is like 1 million times stronger along the grain. By rotating every second layer of wood by 90 degrees you effectively make the board half as strong as it could be. I make it easy for you, imagine a board made from solid wood, the grain goes along the length of the board. What happens if you step in the middle of that board? Right! Nothing, solid as a rock. Now think of a solid wood board with the grain across the lenght of the board, it probably breaks from the weight of your shoe. So if you want to make a super strong board dont crossgrain, its much better to match the grain direction and add in a few layers of carbon/glassfiber just to stop the board from splitting along the grain.
I most likely own 80-90% of the tools used, and the ones I do not own I have pretty decent replacements for, don't call me rich or anything, still student.
Hey man! That's a sick board! However, some tips to make it sturdier would be to 1)put the maple in the middle instead of the bottom, 2) add more polyurethane (preferably 4 coats of brush on instead of spray on) and 3) fiberglass and epoxy resin makes it extremely sturdy if you apply it before the poly. You could also use 1/4 inch baltic birch instead of 1/8. But again man, awesome board! Keep it up!
Awesome job, thats not an easy build by any means and it came out great! Personally I picked up an 80 dollar Fleabay special longboard, changed the wheels and bearings and called it a day. Rides great.
To get a nice straight line when doing the longer ends what I did was use a skill saw and did the entire length of the board and used a saw zaw to cut out the corners and curves. Really helped for the overall symmetry of the board.
July 5th I commented on your video saying I'm gonna make one, well I did!!! your video helped a lot, but I would reccomend fiberglass on both sides it makes your board 100% waterproof and 10 test stronger
had to come back and drop a thanks, I wouldn't have thought to use my car to run over a mold for my street luge if I hadn't seen this video, just got it in the mold a few hours ago, I just drove my car onto the mold tho haha, can't wait to see how it turns out.
The amount of love for the vlogger in this comment section is amazing. It's always good to see people defending someone who put a lot of time and effort into something
Tools needed: Drill press, jigsaw, sander. DAD, GRANDDAD, can't easily replace those last two.. :) Nice tutorial, i built a skateboard out of 5 layers of Birch 20 years ago.. it's still in great shape..
I am building a skateboard in class, your process is very similar with the vinyl. The only thing is to give ours the curve we use a plastic bag, a foam layout, and a hand vacuum. We put 2-3 vinyl boards on top of eachother (with glue), put that on a curved foam template, then put it in the bag, air sealing it and waiting over night, each day we add 2 more layers until we get to 7 layers. its a pintail board btw :) your board is very well designed and crafted, may I assume that your dad is a crafts man/lumber worker? have a good day :)
wow i make alot of mine the same way, but it takes me about half the time... i could give you some tips on some things your missing, but over all you know exactly what your doing and it looks great!
Great job Josh - I really like your video. It looks like you had fun making it. I'm going to make something similar for my son in a few weeks and I'll be using some of your advice when I build. Well done and good luck with your next video.
Ok, seriously this kid has pretty much the best dad ever!
Antonio Borrego it's called being rich and white no hate just the truth
Andy Nguyen it's called hard working and education.
West Kotelko not that he would know anything about it though.
Antonio Borrego I was thinking the same thing to myself this dude's got a pretty Rad Dad :-D
You are blessed to have a Grandfather that will do that stuff with you.
I think it's awesome how his dad worked with him on this. You can always tell a great dad because he'd rather build a skateboard with his son, than play golf with his buddies every day.
Definitely one of the better longboard builds on RUclips.
It's awesome that your dad and your grandpa helped you.
Excellent video!! Cudos to your Dad and Grampa for helping. You'll never forget that board and years from now you can brag to any kids you might have that you and your dad made that board.
This is the best home made I've seen so far. Good tips to. :)
I love the way the father works with his son to make the board and get familiar with tools and stuff. Even the grandpa helps! That's is the meaning of a family. I didn't raised with a father or a grandfather but I can feel the magic of this! Be proud of your folks and by the way... this is a fantastic board :)
Bless ur dad, I want that family activities.

Lol

Great video! Even though you said it snapped it's still very impressive how much precision you actually put into the building
Lads, one of the best videos I have seen of longboard making. A simple press that achieves the same. Good work, nice video.
your so lucky!.., because you have a cool dad that have a time to bond with you in making this board.., i'm just too unfortunate that my dad is not cool as your dad.., nice build!
"You're"
Fucking pansy
To see someone smiling to go to work.. man i wanted my life like this. You guys are such an inspiration to me
doesn't matter if you snapped it or not. having an awesome grandpa and dad to help you built it, that's what most important. you can say that i envy you, in a good way, of course :)
Wohohohoo what a beautiful baby you just made born. I would like to wish you to enjoy it but I'm sure that you already do. Great job all of you, that's awesome to see a little bit of cohesion inside a family !
do i need to consider buying a dune buggy for having right pressure amount when pressing the plies?
+Davíd Kyzer would it work with a pink aged buggy?
+Lionel Joseph no, sadly, i tried, its all falling apart now...........
seems life a legit reason too buy one
+Lionel Joseph
It has to be a red dune buggy with a yellow roof.
/watch?v=uYXBZbFXg4U
TremereTT oh that's great , bud spencer and terence hill !
Nice to see someone who took the time to make it instead of just going out and buying one
Very good, nice video and congratulations to your family. Greetings from Brazil.
Just want to say thanks for making this, this is one of the clearest tutorials I've found on the plywood and press method and so thanks.
What a great video and project you can do together -- Well Done it looked awesome!
Your gramps and pops are proper men and you dudes made a proper board.
Your dad's workshop beats mine :(
awesome video tho dude, helped a lot, the board turned out beautiful!
grandpa , dad and you . you are so blessed .
You did a great job on this video, and your board!
Poopy butthole
When I made mine I used a foam mold 7 layers of oak 3 lateral grain 4 horizontal and a vacuum bag. It turned out awesome. Nothing better than the feel of your own board.
You are lucky boy, that you have great father and grandfather ;)
Btw...great video ;)
Why are all the comments making fun of this dude. He did a great job and he is happy with it.
good edit...
good team...

greetings from a Germany
Priceless board to have it build with your dad and grandfather! Great video. Thanks!
Nice bro! Post a vid of you riding it! I want to see how it handles
In the description he said it snapped because he didn't use enough veneers.
he snaped the board
if you wanted to do this I recommend more Veneers. but for a really good quality board I suggest you save up and buy one if possible. the investment is worth it!
John Hutchins Well he traced a Tan Tien which is a legit ass board if you ask me, so i don't think he needs to worry about it.. haha
Great build and explanation. Teamwork got the job done, a valuable lesson to be learned at an early age. Well done.
I am so jealous. i wish i had father son moments like this. Well any father son time in general.
I always wanted to learn how to create with wood
Me to bro me too
I'm starting my board tomorrow and thanks to you I think that it will be a less bumpy ride. Crazy Amazing job on that beautiful deck

You should open a brand for selling longboards XD cool!
some slow claps for you sir. this project would be the best father and son project!
Great video on the subject. This is the best and most helpful video I've found so far and probably the one I'll use to guide me in making my board. But just out of curiosity, how much pressure did you have the board under when it snapped? Was it during a sharp stressful turn? I just don't want to go through the trouble and snap the board.
Nice job. Maybe try with my grandson?
Even if the board turned out bad, which it didnt, it came out awesome man, i just love the family activity goin on here👍👍👍
READ THE DESCRIPTION YOU GUYS. IT SNAPPED!!! LOOK UP HOW TO MAKE A DIMM PRESS IT IS MUCH EASIER.
Gave me a new idea for pressing the board thanks! Its way simpler than mine and seems to work better, and for everyone commenting with prices of tool, we at Owl City have employees who also work at hardware store and you guys are way off. Granted you don't need to use a car for a weight, but what you have on hand works.
NICE BOARD!!!!
This kid has an awesome dad.! Great video bro.!
great video, you have a good life :-)
good work little man, turned out really nice! spending time with your family, learning new skills, and creating some functional all in one, more kids your age need to take a page out of that book!
How did you know the size of the design and the gaps/holes
Calvin van der kruit He used another longboard as design.
ohh ye true
bro i dont have a board at all and there are no good measurements online...(bought 1 today)
platypus?
Jk just bought a lowrider thanks anyways
Dad of the year awarded to this guy
Got one word, RICH!!
Jeahh and the dad did 60% of the work
Tobi Demming are you crying cus youre dad didnt do this with you?
Tobi Demming how cares?
***** Haha xD owned
yes and a normal rich teenager would buy a Longboard but he created one by hisself
That's a beautiful board man, great job. After I get a job I plan to build a custom downhill board over summer, thanks for the video it will help a lot.
That's awesome
Your pretty
griffin thompson and you're thirsty af lol
Pink Pretzel hell yea
+griffin thompson You're*
Dude thank you so much! Best tutorial on building a longboard on youtube for me. My board turned out perfect. Thanks so much.
The song is finally moving by pretty lights
Awesome video. I hope I can show my children useful skills like this. Really creative and wholesome.
As a carpenter, this made my brain hurt. lol
i have done a similar project, its damn hard to get a good result but so worth it! You get so much more attached to something you've made yourself than something you've bought :D
It most likely costs more to build

Zach Krantz maybe building a long board saves u less but ik that my long board and set up is around 500$ and I can guarantee that my long board and everything will be better than this (no hate just saying ahaha)
Ian Cassady yea probly considering it was made by professionals not guys like us
Ya but I'm just saying the quality of my board and even if I was pricey I'd rather have trust worthy than just saving money and getting something that not as good or last as long cus I'm really happy with my landyacths caliber trucks and blood orange wheels with an extra set of bear 50 trucks and loaded racing gloves (my dad paid for my shit) but point is I'd rather have a pricey reliable board than a chince board that'll last maybe a year
Ian Cassady true man me too im just sayin some people dont have too much money to spend on stuff like that ya know what i mean?
10 years laters this got recommended to me. Awesome video :D
i don't even need to see you on that board to know that it's gonna snap any second
Why? What's wrong on the way he makes the board?
Snivelk it just looks like it would snap, you can tell just by the way it looks
cool, it better have, it was junk
no he needed to cross grain the layers i build boards for a living was a very nice board but not very strong
So you build boards for a living? Poor customers i must say. Crossgraining is the most stupid idea you could possibly have. Wood is like 1 million times stronger along the grain. By rotating every second layer of wood by 90 degrees you effectively make the board half as strong as it could be. So if you want to make a super strong board dont crossgrain, its much better to match the grain direction and add in a few layers of carbon/glassfiber just to stop the board from splitting along the grain.
Hey man, this is great. You're a true craftsman and you do quality work. I'm sure you have a board you made yourself that kills the brand-name decks.
must be nice to be rich
I was thinking the same lol
It is
Vince Prado And why is he rich? Because he's making a longboard himself?
***** All the tools he's using is almost a standard where I live, I don't see it as being rich.
I most likely own 80-90% of the tools used, and the ones I do not own I have pretty decent replacements for, don't call me rich or anything, still student.
Hey man! That's a sick board! Great job on the board. Even better that your dad and grandfather helped. Nice job on the video as well.
To get a nice straight line when doing the longer ends what I did was use a skill saw and did the entire length of the board and used a saw zaw to cut out the corners and curves. Really helped for the overall symmetry of the board.
great project, looks like it was a good bonding experience with your dad
This was a great vid, dad guiding you through, nice job 👏👏
the best thing about this video for me, was the to see a bit of the relationship between him and his father.
July 5th I commented on your video saying I'm gonna make one, well I did!!! your video helped a lot, but I would reccomend fiberglass on both sides it makes your board 100% waterproof and 10 test stronger
Iv been wanting to make a board for a while, and Iv watched a few vids but this is definitely the best by far!!!
Nicely done video! I like it when the video is sped up like this. Also enjoyed the Watchtower chords.
That's a great family project. I'll be sure to remember it when I have kids of my own. Thank you guys. :)
had to come back and drop a thanks, I wouldn't have thought to use my car to run over a mold for my street luge if I hadn't seen this video, just got it in the mold a few hours ago, I just drove my car onto the mold tho haha, can't wait to see how it turns out.

Nice video! Your dad is a nice guy for help out! Hope the board was nice to ride!

Read the description though.
Wow man , you really took time with this video and the longboard . i give you total props , im subscribing .
Gotta admit, that's a sick looking board.
I've seen people male longboards but man is yours sick
Tools needed: Drill press, jigsaw, sander. DAD, GRANDDAD, can't easily replace those last two.. :) Nice tutorial, i built a skateboard out of 5 layers of Birch 20 years ago.. it's still in great shape..

great vid man, I've been thinking about starting longboarding, but now I've made up my mind. I'm gonna make a kick-ass board first! thanks a lot!
you put so much work in it, respect
Dude thats freaking aweosme i never knew how to bend the board like you did when you put the car tire on it
Its awesome how much effort your dad puts into your project :D
that board turned out really sick!
Very nice choice of music as well as a well-made video. Good job.
im amazed how ppl can dislike this video. great job, awesome looking deck

This caught my interest. An absolute masterpiece, and pure creativity. Good job!! :D
wow i make alot of mine the same way, but it takes me about half the time... i could give you some tips on some things your missing, but over all you know exactly what your doing and it looks great!

That's a nice board! Good job dude!
Very impressive! Well done and hope you enjoy it
I hope you gained a lot, whilst making this, You did great man!! I'd be Impressed if i could make something to that standard!!
Great job Josh - I really like your video. It looks like you had fun making it. I'm going to make something similar for my son in a few weeks and I'll be using some of your advice when I build. Well done and good luck with your next video.
