- It's been a minute since I've done any woodworking, so I thought I'd take a crack at making a DIY version of the Keen Ramps Slap Stick. You could do this whole thing with a jigsaw and a drill. Simple build, super fun to skate, I'm happy! If you want to see more of this kind of thing, leave a comment below!
Materials:
1 2'x2' project panel 3/4" plywood for the sides
1 4x8 sheet of 1/4" plywood for the riding surface
4 2x4s for the supports
1 2x2 for the coping
2.25" screws for joining the sides and 2x4s
1.25" screws for attaching the riding surface
2" steel pipe
J bolts for attaching the coping to the 2x2
All totaled I spent about $140 - Видеоклипы
I found the specs (from the Keen video) 6" high from top of coping to bottom. 24" wide. Transition is 4' radius. I'm working on a template now.
ooo, thanks for that! I'm gonna pin this since a bunch of folks were asking about that!
@@thisgoestoeleven Hopefully I'll get to posting a video on my channel soon. I do have a PDF template now though!
@@ras0nehey can send a link to download a pdf working on this project now
6 ft would be the best length imo. 4 ft is too short to lock some grinds. 8ft is hard to transport.
could you share with me as well? i think a lot of people would be interested in this
love that little zoom in on the sign at 0:41 ! im sure everyone is dying to skate a fork lift 🤣
dude I'm a freshman in college and i use to do so much dyi with both wood and concrete and i haven't done it in so long. I miss it and ive also been wanting to build a slapstick bit im thing to go concrete and just put in on the side walk somewhere. love it dawg.
get after it! A concrete version would be sick
So sick !
This is definitely the way to go if you have the equipment and tools
If I were to make it again I'd use 1/2 ply and bevel the bottom where it contacts the ground instead of the 1/4". I'm sure the baltic birch stuff that Keen uses is stronger than what I had access to at Home Depot, I put my wheel through it and went flying last time I skated it lol. The 1/4 held up for about a year of semi-regular skating though, not too bad.
Nice video man, cool that you included your mistakes and all. Nice skating as well, looks like hours of fun 👍
thanks!
Nice man! Looks super fun, I'm going to try to build one as well
Go for it!
sweet dude ,i'm gonna "slap" one together soon myself to go in my DIY garage 'skate plaza'
This is awesome wish I had one of these so I could fall on it lol
haha thanks!
very relatable jigsawing
safety third kids!
You did a great job. I have been thinking about doing the same, just to be able to get a 6 footer. Hard for me to justify saving only $70 bucks with the price of lumber though.
Yeah, I feel that. If it was 6' instead of 4' I'd have probably just bought one. That said, I like woodworking and video production, so I got two fun projects out of it, plus the thing itself.
How long did it last or like how much skating did u get out of it
@@mattpriceplucky2646 I've only had a couple sessions on it, but so far it's holding up really well. One of the corners is chipping a little, but that may have more to do with uneven ground than the thing itself. The structure itself is really solid, so worst case scenario I replace the 1/4" plywood at some point down the road.
You should have framed it with blocks shaped like the profile every eight inches. That would save material and be more rigid. It is how the Keen ones are made.
ruclips.net/video/fbJ5v2BNAsM/видео.html&ab_channel=KEENRAMPS I built mine the same way Keen Ramps make theirs, with plywood templates on either end connected by horizontal 2x4s. Feels pretty rigid and solid so far, but we'll see how it holds up over time!
Yeh exactly u clown haha owned ^^ go build your own
Great video bro
Thanks!
@@thisgoestoeleven As thanks for respond i give you a sub to boost your subscribers bro. keep on shred!
cool!
I wud have used 2x for the transition s on both sides, just so U have more to screw into; but like U said, "It's not stoopid if it werks!".
Can't lie to u brutha - there were moments when u were making me nervous / can never be extra cautious no matter what ur skill level happens to be when having fun with builds...
Yeah, power tools are no joke and I always try to be as careful as I can.
Great job! I've wanted to slap (get it!?) together one of these since I saw their original video. Such a fun looking obstacle!
Thanks!
rad😊
Hi Thomas. That's a great project !
What is the total height including the coping ?
Do you have a diagram to build the sides ?
Thanks! It's 6" tall in total including the coping. I don't have detailed plans, but I posted a rough cut list that I used to get everything broken down at Home Depot on the r/OldSkaters subreddit, if you search for it there it's in the comments. Hope this helps!
What was the overall cost?
I think it was around $140
would they been more even and been easier if you clamped them together to cut them the end pieces?
Yeah probably, but my jigsaw is kinda janky and doesn't like going through thicker material.
Dope. Was totally thinking of building one of these. How's others holding up?
Thanks! I've only gotten a few sessions in because of the weather, but so far so good!
How did you come up with the radius and height of it? I built a mini ramp a few months ago and used galvanized pipe as a temporary coping until I got my actual sch 40 steel. So I've got 2-8' pieces of pipe and have most of the material left over to build a slap stick.
for the height I copied the dimensions for the Keen Ramps original version, so it's around 6.5" from the ground to the top of the coping, I believe. For the transition, I just kind of eyeballed a curve and sanded it until I liked the look of it. It's a little whippier than I originally planned, but it's fun.
@Thomas Neeson awesome! Appreciate your reply man!
Nice job, is this a 6 or 8 foot long?
I want to make one of those this summer.
Now that you made one, would you recommand more a 6 or 8 foot?
I made mine 5' so I could fit it my car with the seats folded down.
Any regrets with 5ft? Do you wish it was 6ft? Or have you been super happy?
Looks fun, though.
I can’t find any 2 inch steel pipe at Home Depot or Lowe’s, would galvanized fence posts be too flimsy?
I'd check around for a plumbing supply store near you, that's where I found mine. I've seen folks make them out of pvc and other materials though, so the galvanized post might work? Only one way to find out ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
hoorayyy
That is sick man! I watched Cory's video where he built one and made some screen shots so I could try to make my own. My question is, where did you find coping? I can't find anything useful at the local home depot and a 4 foot piece 2" schedule 40 pipe online is like $80 plus shipping. I'm starting to see why they charge $200 for the 4' slap stick.
I got my pipe from a local hardware store that cuts pipe to length, and I live in the middle of nowhere. i posted on a local "community forum" FB group and a bunch of folks suggested local places, so I'd start there.
where can i find that transition piece template?
I just sketched out a curve I liked the look of and used a sander to get the shape I wanted, so I'm not sure what the radius is. Keen Ramps did a video on their channel where they go through all the specs, and you can zoom in on the template he sketches out. That's what I did.
Could you give a list of all the parts and materials you needed to build this? I want to attempt this as well I’m just balling on a budget
2x4s for the supports, 3/4" for the transitions (you can get 2'x2' project panels), a sheet of 1/4" for the riding surface, and 2" schedule 40 steel pipe. cost for the materials is gonna vary based on how big you build it, plus screws, drill bits, countersink, etc, hope this helps!
Where did you find a 2” OD coping?
Local hardware store.
How did you attach the pipe to the wood?
I drilled holes in the coping and then slightly oversized holes in a 2x2 and attached them with bolts and washers. There are some really good detailed videos on that elsewhere on youtube, I just watched a bunch of those til I had the general idea and did that.
Seasons hoodie is sick are u from upstate
I'm a few hours north of Albany!
It's like not even that expensive for all the work you put in replicating it tho
yeah but making stuff is fun so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The thumbnail looks like a fingerboard ramp lol
I'd like to find someone to build this for me...wood shop is not my best subject to say the least. Anyone know the best way, I guess hiring a contractor that is knowledgeable of building similar things? Hard to find one on the East Coast and spending all that money for Keen Ramps to ship it to me is kinda out of the question....Wish I was better with wood shop!
May soon lose my back garden mini due to my miserable, narcissistic c**t of a neighbour. So I'm going to use the materials to build an 8ft one of these to use kerbside - right outside the window........😂
I'm building an 8' footer in two months..my problem is gonna be how to attach the steel coping..please someone post a video
In this video, Cory Keen explains how they attach coping for their 1/4 pipes. They use the same technique for the slap stick.
ruclips.net/video/nQOA6CWNhyg/видео.html
@@charlesging4630 That's a good way to do it if you've got a tap to thread the hole in the pipe. If you don't have a tap and die set though, you can drill the holes in the same places and use J bolts, which I had a hard time finding but ended up getting them at Tractor Supply.
Looks too short
okay, build yours longer then ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
