I discovered your channel last night. What a wonderful thing! Admire your knowledge, how you care for your plants and how you share your experiences. Wonderful camera work and facilitating abilities. The absolute best on orchid care in UTube! Thank you.
what a beautiful orchid! have you considered doing a video touring through all your dendrochilums? that would be really interesting to see. i have a dendrochilum gracile which i struggle to keep humid enough, but has the loveliest scent when she flowers!
That's interesting. I cannot detect any noticeable scent from my gracile. D. glumaceum is the best for scent if you haven't got one. I haven't posted a video for a while but I'll bear in mind doing a round up in future.
Thanks Helen. They flower when quite small and flowering times for different species cover most of the year so I have at least one in flower most of the time. I think they are really worthwhile orchids.
Beautiful orchid!. and thank you for a very informative video. I really like Dendrochilums having three myself. Hope you can keep the temperature under controle during the heatwave.
Thank you for that great video, i recently bought D. filiforme as well D. yuccifolim for my mother at a local orchid show and in watching your video relized that i may have made an error in doing so as she only really has experience in caring for various Phalaenopsis hybrids. If you could point me in a direction where i could find some general care information on Dendrochilum sp. (if there is such a thing) and how to adapt these to household conditions i would be grateful. Regards, Daniel
Hi Daniel. I had a quick look but couldn't find a convenient source of info. for growing dendrochilums indoors but, compared to Phalaenopsis, they are going to need much higher humidity so a position in a bathroom or kitchen with be a good starting point and mist them with rain water frequently. Aim to keep the compost evenly moist. You didn't say where you are but if the weather outside is ever warm and rainy a sheltered and shaded position outside might be a good place to put them while conditions last.
@@HowardRice Thank you for taking the time to answer. You are right i forgot to mention that. I am from central europe, so a sheltered shaded spot shouldn't be a problem from end of April or May to September. We run the risk of frost the rest of the year. We will try our best i suppose. Again, thanks, Daniel
Dendrochilum filiforme is the only Dendrochilum I grow for now as I haven't found any other I'd like the fragrance of. Mine has actually a nice mid strength fragrance. I'd describe it as fresh cut grass/cucumber/watermelon with floral undertones.
Dendrochilums should flower every year once established but small divisions might take a year to recover and start flowering again regularly. Hopefully yours should flower regularly from now on. If not something isn't quite right about the growing conditions. They need to be cool, shady and humid with regular watering during the growing season. Hope this helps.
Hi Howard! Could you please suggest me an easy to grow scented dendrochilum? It would be my first dendrochilum, i grow my orchids indoor ( intermediate-warm), ourdoor in summer . Thank you
I would start with Dendrochilum glumaceum. It's not too big, it's quite widely available and has what most people would call a lovely spicey scent. It comes from quite a wide altitude range so will be okay in a range of temperatures. In summer a shady position and kept moist should be fine and only bring it indoors once the nights go below about 12 deg c. Bear in mind when you bring it indoors that in the wild it grows on mossy trees and has misty conditions some of the time. Maybe add some live moss to the pot if there isn't some already. If the moss stays green that's a good sign.
@@holleyisobel9205 You could also ask the very nice people at Spicesotic plants. Although they don't list it at the moment they are very helpful and might be able to obtain one. I have bought many plants from them and they are totally reliable.
That's worth knowing although the scent of some Dendrochilums very much divides opinions. D. glumaceum is probably the best bet for scent and it's not too big, unlike some others.

It is truly a wonderful orchid 😌🙏💞
What a wonderful orchid! Thank you for sharing. I have a couple of young Dendrochilums but no flowers yet. Your advice is helpful.

Very vibrant looking plant! Mine has no scent either.
Beautiful!
How do you get it to flower every year? Mine has three flower stems for the first time since I bought it two years ago

Hi, I don’t suppose anyone can recommend a place to buy one? I’m struggling to find any UK sellers online.
Try Orchid Botanics in Bristol
Thank you!!
