Howard's Orchids
Великобритания
Добавлен 2 авг 2016
I've been a passionate gardener all my life and live in Cambridge, England. Over the last ten years I've enjoyed developing a collection of about 300 orchids. I grow mostly species and primary hybrids and I'm particularly interested in those that are nicely scented. My orchids are in a lean to greenhouse built onto the shady side of our house. The growing conditions are 'Intermediate' with a minimum temperature in winter of approximately 14°C (57°F) and a summer max. that rarely exceeds 32°C (90°F). The minimum humidity is normally at least 70% and nearer 90% at night. The greenhouse measures 4.2m x 3.1m (12ft.6 ins. x 10ft.) but probably seems larger in the videos due to the use of a slightly wide angle lens for filming. The climate in Cambridge is USDA zone 9a. Our winters are not particularly cold but because we are as far from the equator as Newfoundland and the Southernmost tip of Chile our winter days are short and the light levels are often very low.
Episode 44 Phalaenopsis corningiana and more scented orchids in bloom
Phalaenopsis corningiana fills the greenhouse with a powerful scent.
Dendrobium aphyllum (syn.Dendrobium pierardii) has a mass of sweetly and delicately scented flowers.
Phalaenopsis hongenensis - a new cooler growing scented species
Dendrobium lawesii has long lasting flowers that come in a wide range of colours apart from my pink form.
A small batch of seedlings from my first orchid hybrid.
A big thanks to Orchid Alchemy for growing the seeds and supplying a flask of lovely seedlings.

I'm really pleased with two scented Epidendrum species - Epidendrum stamfordianum and Epidendrum ciliare. Phalaenopsis javanica is a delightful scented species flowering for me for the first time and proves so much better in real life than in photographs. My two forms of Coelogyne cristata have a tendency to grow straggly so I'm doing a bit of training to tidy them up.

… cordialement, Patricia.
Wow the tiny orchid will be looks nice in terrarium
Hope you are well. It seems like a long time has passed without a video from you. I always enjoy seeing your videos, you have such unusual orchids.
Stunning Bifrenaria plants Howard! Leave them! They are happy.
Thanks for the great video Howard. It would be great to have a video tour of your growing space, heating, humidity and general 'life support' setup etc. Thanks!
Hi Howard..I.miss your videos. I hope all is ok with you as we havent seen you on here for a while.
See the following: "The species epithet xyrekes comes from the Greek word ξυρηκής (transliterated as "xyrekes"), meaning "shaved" or "smooth," likely referring to the specific appearance or texture of some part of the flower, like its lip or petals, which might have a smoother, "shaved" look compared to other species."
Thank you for your videos! I am a new subscriber and this is wonderful knowledge. Thank you again
Thankyou. Glad you find them useful. Orchids aren't always the easiest plants to grow!
New subscriber here. I really like your content, very inspirational, beautiful orchids. Feels like i am watching an orchid documentary.
Thankyou. I haven't posted a new video for a while but I hope to enjoy some of the others too.
what a beautiful orchid! have you considered doing a video touring through all your dendrochilums? that would be really interesting to see. i have a dendrochilum gracile which i struggle to keep humid enough, but has the loveliest scent when she flowers!
That's interesting. I cannot detect any noticeable scent from my gracile. D. glumaceum is the best for scent if you haven't got one. I haven't posted a video for a while but I'll bear in mind doing a round up in future.
Enjoyed your video very much, thank you! I have large division of canhamiana coerulea that fails to flower but sends out abundant growth. We have similar cool and overcast conditions weather. Could you kindly share any advice to make them send those spikes? Would greatly appreciate it
The only thing that comes to mind is perhaps not enough light. Mine is right up near the glass in my case. I don't think it would flower if it was down on a bench.
Thanks lovely , my wish list is growing.
Greetings from Kentucky in the US Howard. I actually purchased a Pleurothallis dressleri that arrived in the post today. I ordered it from an orchid grower in Florida. I think I got a good deal on the price as it was $65.00 US dollars. Others I looked at were around $119.00 US dollars. Mine looks slightly smaller than yours. Like yours mine is mounted on cork bark with moss on it. I re-watched this video and I'm excited to try to get this mico-mini orchid to flower. Thanks for the inspiration. James
You are welcome. As a starting point I think normal pleurothallid growing conditions are fine but with high humidity/regular misting so they never get too dry. I spray mine regularly with rainwater and as a result I think they might be a bit starved of nutrients because they currently look a bit pale and grow slowly. I'm still experimenting!
@@HowardRice It's morning here right now so I'm getting ready to water my mounts. I use distilled water because it never rains in Kentucky during the summers. I mix a little seaweed extract and Cal-Mag in the water once a week for my mounts. I found an online orchid nursery called Tarzane Group and been buying a bunch of mini mounted orchids. I really enjoy these plants.
i ve begun recently watching your videos mr Howard and i really enjoy them. i am learning a lot and i am inspired too
Awesome Howard. I really like your presentations. I enjoy it alot
Glad you like them!
I wish I have such a nice private green house.
Thank you so much for this video. I’m late to the party only finding out about box caterpillars this week when a relative showed me what was happening to my 8 box balls and picked out caterpillars to show me. I was horrified. I’ve immediately started picking them out by hand while I wait for delivery of the product you mention. It should be delivered today. If you don’t mind, I have two questions (1) am I too late in the year to spray? It’s September (2024) now but I can see the caterpillars wriggling around inside the plants and (2) should I take a dustpan and brush and gently sweep off the dead brown box leaves before spraying. Thank you so much, and for your brilliantly enlightening video.
I love pleione! My climate is far too hot for me to try growing any though. I image they would bake in my 105f+ summers.
Every video on this channel is a treasure. I own only two smaller orchids from a supermarket among my ither plants, but it doesn't matter one bit
My DJ keeps producing hand-sized maple-like leaves coming from brown fuzzey protuberances. Never any flowers tho :(
Fascinating videos. How do you come about your orchids? Asking out of mild curiosity.
The introduction was fun! I am learning a lot from your videos. Do you use a fan in your conservatory?
Yes I have a small fan high up which is one all the time just to move the air around gently. I also use another one low down if needed in winter when any water on the foliage is taking a long time to evapourate.
They are not selling the biological control anymore.
I have recently acquired this orchid, about a week ago, it is a very young plant, thank goodness it is a very healthy specimen so I have hope in growing it successfully. Your orchid is truly magnificent!! Hopefully I can achieve the same results, alas, patience and perseverance will be the order of the day!! I am going to try to repot the plant today and then hopefully it will grow successfully and become a beautiful plant like yours. Thank you for sharing, I love the greenhouse, small, compact and it does the job for what is needed. Have a super day.
Love the greenhouse
Nice one Howard. I placed my Bifrenaria harisonii in a wood basket hope it takes of like yours. We did not see you at the NEC but we will look forward to next time . David
Starting to watch from scratch. I do believe that you need a TV show!! I am so impressed with your videos!
So happy to have found your channel!
Howard any tricks or ideas to encourage the Pleurothallis cypripedioides to bloom? I imported mine over two years ago and it’s grown into nice size plant. About twice as big as the specimen you have. It had flower spikes and still does they’re brown and I think dead but no flowers! 😭 I’ve tried cooler temps more light/less light because I thought maybe it was just too warm. My conditions aren’t very warm to begin with except in summer. I’m stumped. Thank youuuu!
That's hard for me to answer. If it gows well that doesn't make a lot of sense. Do you have other pleurothallid type orchids that grow and flower well? This plant isn't very different. Is the humidity high enough? Mine is seldom less than about 70% and I mist the plant with rainwater most days. Could it be too much feed? Mine gets a dose at about 500 ms about once a week just the same as my other orchids. I you make a change to the growing environment you sometimes need to wait quite a while to see it it helps. Lastly some people are now calling it a Stelis.
You should also get Jewel Orchids. They have beautiful leaves that look like laced with golden thunderbolts.
Thanks. They are very beautiful. I have been growing several jewel orchids for a couple of years but only recently got them to thrive. I will do a video in future because I know they are popular but also tricky for many people. I was waiting until I had reached the stage of being able to offer useful advice.
Thanks Howard, I found this most interesting. I have just one pot of this outside Orchid. Now I know how to look after them. Your Orchid house is just wonderful. Very interesting.
Hi Howard, sorry to be the bearer of bad news but there is no UK certification for Xentari, so you are prohibited to purchase or apply it in this country. I'm surprised you filmed yourself applying it.
I’m very interested in Aroids such as anthurium and monsteras, but your videos are inspiring me too look into orchids! Just found your channel and I love the quality, beautiful specimens. Thank you Howard!
I'm pleased to have given you some more ideas as to what to grow.
That is a beautiful colour on your P. honghenensis!
I ❤ your videos, and your way of going about explaining things and variety you manage to grow in rainy olde England! I can only dream!
Howard, this is David (and John) who moved from the Cambridge orchid soc in 2022. I’ve just come across your channel. Love it! I’m sitting here in Cornwall looking at my piece of cattleya canhamiana flowering now. It’s a lovely hybrid and I agree about the scent, stunning.
Hi David, Great to hear from you. Hope everything has been working out well for you both. I'm afraid my cattleyas aren't in the same league as yours.
Hi, love your channel. Very informative. Today i wanted to ask you about your hangers. I am looking at them and wondering if you make them yourself or maybe purchase them. If you make them yourself, it would be interesting if you could share this information. I'm from Venezuela, have a gian dendrobium and need to hang it from the ceiling. I have a wire basket but want to transplant it like you do -- in a separate pot and then place it in the hanging wire basket. But i need to make the wire hanger!
Hi Judy, Glad you like my channel. I make my hangers using galvanised or plastic coated wire and a pair of pliers. I originally copied one that came with a vanda a long time ago. You need a selection of wire sizes according to the size of plant/pot. For the biggest plants I have also used the common chain link hangers that come with wire hanging baskets.
Thank you for responding. I'm going to look for this type of coated wire as i did not even know this existed! But I found it on Amazon so i'll have that option. My noid dendrobium is blood red with a velvety lip. It blooms constantly! It currently has a one spike with 11 flowers but is also growing her next cane! I have a giant vanda too with an of shoot which has two long roots which I need to cut off (first time) and place in its own little basket. I am hesitating as i know this will be traumatic both for me and my plant! So i need to learn and master wire bending skills! @@HowardRice
I enjoyed this video very much. You present orchids very well, describe well also. Thank you for explaining everything about miniature orchids. New Subscriber .
You are very welcome
I discovered your channel last night. What a wonderful thing! Admire your knowledge, how you care for your plants and how you share your experiences. Wonderful camera work and facilitating abilities. The absolute best on orchid care in UTube! Thank you.
Gosh! That's really kind of you to say so.
I want a division of that prosthechea radiata please
Well. There's plenty of it so if you ever visit Cambridge I'll give you one. But sorry I don't get involved with selling or posting plants.
@@HowardRice basically I am from India and i would be visiting London from the 11th to 15th September. Hopefully if I get some time will catch up
Hi Howard - Ilove your video - thank you for taking the time to share your orchids with us. I am the webmaster for the Austin, TX orchid society and I was wondering if you would have any objections to linking to your videos on our website? I would love to share them with others in the society
You are welcome to do so but ofcourse your members will need to bear in mind the huge difference in climate. I watch 'Orchid House Fort Lauderdale. His videos are very good. You probably know his channel already.
When you say it is a calm day, I find it always calming whenever I watch your videos - I love how I learn from you, I enjoy your orchids and at same time, I feel calm and always feel awesome. Thank you.
Wonderful video, as usual!

Thank you once again Mr Howard. Love your videos and orchids. Very beautifully grown and so well taken care of. It's always a joy to watch your videos, so much inspiration! And always waiting for the next one. But i do re-visit your past videos again and again.
Thanks so much for sharing, Howard! I always look forward to your videos. Full of knowledge and beautiful orchids. Best!
Many thanks.

I love Dendrobiums and phals- but you are right the phals are a struggle in the UK. Fabulous plants!
In the UK growing indoors seems to be a better bet for most people - providing you have somewhere suitable.
Thank you for your videos, Howard. They are such a treat 😊!
Glad you enjoyed it. I always hope that my videos, added to all the videos posted by other growers, will help to create an amazing source of information and inspiration for all orchid enthusiasts.
