- A short tour of the greenhouse in winter and coping with some unusually cold weather. New miniature orchids in bloom and scent from some older favourites. A longer video than normal as a result!
Wonderful video. Please keep producing these.
So happy to have found your channel!
Love the greenhouse
Ah, I asked you to give a tour inside your greenhouse in another video and here I am watching it hahaha. Very wonderful collections and beautiful greenhouse also. Your knowledge about orchids is outstanding. I always enjoy your videos.
Great to see RUclips colection, thanks
Thankyou
Enjoyed your video so much that I just had to subscribe. Thank you for sharing your greenhouse orchids.
Scented orchids are my favorite as well!
Thank you so much, Howard! Love your greenhouse, your collection and the way how you present your treasures. As others already have said - please keep going. In northern Germany we even had around -10 °C night temperature the last 8 days or so. It's quiet challenging even for window sill growers, but so far my plants are doing well, some of them even seem to like the lower temps. So intersting experience.... Wish you and your family all the best 😊🤗
Thankyou
Very interesting video. Thanks Howard and greetings to Cambridge :)
I enjoy your green house. You have a nice selection of Orquids. Thank you.
I’m catching up with your previous videos, makes excellent watching.🤗
Orchids are great and I have a few, but they always look so mangy.
I'd be the first to agree that in most cases even very well grown orchids aren't the best looking of plants when not in flower.
The zygopetalum has a cute little happy face in the center of the flower. I love it!
You have created such a marvelous environment. I wish I could ship it to California, in its entirety! Thank you for such a treat of a video!
Great to see the workings of your greenhouse! Love your collection !
As always most interesting, lovely collection Howard.
Splendid!!
absolutely stunning collection
Thankyou
@@HowardRice Apart from watching how you take care of your orchids. I like listening to your English as I find it so refined.
@@GoldenArrow297 That is a lovely compliment. Thankyou.
I really liked this episode - it’s interesting to see the workings of your greenhouse. The under-shelf heating strips are an interesting idea!
Always thank you for good lectures
Thankyou
Looks nice! I like the mini small orchids with large flowers to
Looks very relaxing.
.....and i though I had a crazy conservatory! fantastic, it looks great! Just came across your channel, I'm an orchid nut and brom collector
Thankyou
Wow so lovely to see yoir whole collection Howard. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
What a wonderfull collection you have. Thanks for sharing.
I love your greenhouse. I'd like to just pull up a chair, settle in with a warm drink, and just relax. It really looks cozy. Best of luck with it always.
Funny you should say that! I had a table and two chairs in there once apon a time. But now there's no room for either!
@@HowardRice There's always room for a single fold up chair just to sit and listen to the plants. You need to try it, it's extremely relaxing and healing.
Thank you so much for your exellent content. your videos are so informative and good. And yes love the minis! Also like finding out about the scented ones. Keep us updated on your greenhouse.
Hi Cecilia. Thankyou for your kind comments.
🥰💚👍Amazing! Bullbofilum is awesome. 💗
Really nice presentation
Thankyou very much
What a fantastic channel I've found. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks. That's kind of you to say so.
Good afternoon, I personally like video 28 the most of all the ones it has, I love the plans from different parts showing the entire greenhouse. I suggest that one day you make a video while you water to see how you do it, since it won't be an easy task, I have half of your greenhouse and it takes a while hahaha, greetings and I look forward to your new video.
Good suggestion. I'll bear that in mind for sometime in the future.
Love your videos! Greatings from Argentina, the very zone of Sophronitis Cernúa; great you can grow her that well!
Thankyou but my plant doesn't compare to those I saw when I went on an orchid trip to the Atlantic Rainforest about ten years ago. It's very difficult to reproduce cloud forest conditions in a greenhouse in Cambridge.
@@HowardRice What differences did you find? Neither here it's an easy plant to make bloom.
Hi Howard , just found your channel and subbed 😀! You have a beautiful collection, love your big bulophylum. I love orchids with beautiful scent too and would collect them too. I am going to heck all your videos and you probably will see few comments from me. Thanks for sharing and happy growing.
Just discovered you channel, what a great collection
Thankyou
Wonderful orchids😊🙏The dendrochilum was beautiful! I'm interested in that. I grow cattleya, dendrobium nobile varieties and Japanese native orchids too. I grow all my phalaeonpsis indoors though. Thanks for the tour🙌I enjoyed it
Che sogno!
Super greenhouse
So beautiful
Thanks Julia
Just subscribed to your channel and I really enjoyed watching this video. Lovely and beautiful greenhouse you got.
They are soo beautiful
Angraecum distichum is an interesting plant, one to look out for. I've got a Kingianum in the post from a well known school that grows top quality plants and sells off the keikis/divisions, I will definitely mount it when it arrives. Thanks again for a great show.
i recently found this channel. it is very informitive and fascinating.🙂
Thankyou
So interesting! There is a Dendrobium kingianum called Berry Oda which is quite a keiki factory!
Nice. update, thanks Howard😀. I've once seen a telipogon growing in-situ in Costa Rica, it looked pretty similar to your hybrid. It was growing kind of terrestrial in moss alongside a path in an area near where the Quetzals can be found.
Hi Justin. I think Equagenera made this cross to produce a plant that looked like a Telepogon but easier to look after. So far so good for me. There is nothing as useful as seeing plants in the wild to observe what conditions they need.
The zygopetalum could be Zygopetalum Mackayii if it has a hyacinth scent . I love mine!
A reliable bloomer with little care required on my part
Actually, since my video, I'm pleased to say that, with the help on one particular viewer who had been at RHS Wisley, and by researching some archives at Cambridge Botanic Gardens I was able to piece together it's name which is 'Warringa Wonder'. It has just finished flowering having lasted over 6 weeks. Same wonderful hyacinth perfume and even when it is quite cool in the greenhouse. A real asset.
Your zygo looks like Artur Elle x blue blazes. Looked it up on etsy
Спасибо большое за интересный рассказ о вашей теплице в зимнее время! У вас много очень красивых и интересных видов!!!!!!! Вы большой молодец! Trichopogon Ecuagenera Dream - гибрид Trichoceros oñaensis x Telipogon thomasii . Расскажите , пожалуйста, как вы содержите это растение и через какое время после покупки он у вас зацвел.
Looks like Zygo mackii
I just found your channel and I am absolutely ENTHRALLED! I wanted to give a suggestion, if you ever need to warm up the greenhouse, you can put bubble wrap inside the windows and that will provide some insulation from the outside. Also it's not terribly invasive or difficult just to simply cut some bubble bubble wrap to size, and use fourth pieces of double sided tape on the corners. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy!
Thanks Ann. Yes, bubble wrap is a favouirite of many growers. I'm fortunate in that my greenhouse is actually fully double glazed which makes a huge difference to the heating requirements and is also wedged between our house and the house next door which further reduces heat loss. The double glazing also massively reduces condensation and helps to keep the humidity high.
Hello Mr. Howard!
I stumbled upon your videos while searching for miniature orchids. I really enjoy all of your videos, keep doing them! Ido have a question though. Could you tell me whats the humidity in your greenhouse in the winter and summer? Thanks
Great video. How do you water your collection? Do you have automatic system for misting or watering?
All done by hand although I have a humidifier which comes on automatically if it needs to in summer.
Where do you get your orchids?
I buy from mail order orchid specialists, from orchid shows and by swapping plants with other enthusiasts.
Hello, I have a question regarding seed starting plug. I think these sponges are bound by a particular polymer. Does anyone know the name of this polymer used in production of the seed starting sponge plugs? I am open to any documents and information regarding the production of these sponge plugs as well.
Thank you
I suggest you post this sort of question on a website that concerns seed sowing, not orchids
I had an orchid that the actual plant was only roots I cant remember what it was called or find it on google. Could anyone tell me please?
Chiloschista, probably.
@@HowardRice thats it, thank you
Dear Howard,
I recently bought a bulbophyllum saltatorium var. albociliatum online, not realizing that it was a miniature. Now I am a bit worried that I wont be able to take proper care of it, since I so far have only managed potted orchids. It came potted as well.
Do you have any idea or tips on how I could keep this orchid alive and happy in a pot?
Warmly,
Aaron Nora
Don't worry. It should be fine. In the Botanic Gardens here in Cambridge they have a very large collection of Bulbophyllums and they are all grown in bark and potted. Mounted orchids need such frequent and careful watering and spraying that it isn't practical in their case.
