You should have a look around the old stables buildings on Panmure Estate there used to be a Chestnut tree reputed to be around 500 years old with only one living branch left, Ewe trees 100's of years old also a huge tree which had been planted by prime minister William Gladstone.
Your right BKR it was a dense forest back in the day I remember working my chainsaw round that monument on a first thinning's contract must have been around the late 1970's.

Unfortunately you can't get up to the old stable block or the Gladstone tree since some grumpy farmer turned it into a house 😒

If I remember correct that part of the former forest was known as the Spiral wood.?
