+Samuel Lopez I put up all the times for an album and people were copying it and claiming they did it when the #'s were exact, then I had trolls telling me I was lying .....LOL
And you had every reason to lie. For example, you could have posted the wrong info, then cornered the lucrative black market trade of legitimate time stamps for B-52 albums. I shudder to think of the globe-spanning consequences and how many once-powerful regimes would then be toppled as a result.
well i turn 60 soon... so 40 years sounds about right when I first saw them in concert at the University of Washington. very few people there so it was awesome!
Im right behind you 53 this year...I saw them 1st time in Central park. Concert was in the ice skating rink, but you could hang out in the perimeter...If I can tell you...people were dancing in the trees,! Actually I saw so many bands that summer...Pretenders Joe Jackson...Summer of 79!
I saw them at the US Festival in San Bernardino early 80's!! I was 16 and drove a 1974 AMC Hornet Station wagon in puke green (my first car) and took 4 others. Police played that day as headliner!
+M Newlon I was vacationing in OC, Maryland around 1982 or so and these two chicks from Baltimore I partied with turned me onto the B-52's. I took this knowledge when I returned to Corntown, OH LOL! I infected my high school with this good stuff.
+M Newlon I am sure I am not the only one who is captured by listening to the music of my youth, transported in my mind back to where I was and who I was with at the time. It's also funny that this was happening simultaneously to all of us wherever we were then. Good times. :)

Wow! Such a terrific album and songs. Brings back so many great memories of my youth listening to so many different types of music. B-52s were always a BIG FAV! Bitter cold nights skiing here in Upstate NY ... Sony Walkman jamming away .. burning weed and having a riot zinging down the slopes.
RiverVmanna a "sophomore album" refers to the 2nd album released by an artist or band. In this case sophomore simply means 2nd. No slight implied or intended. Top tier? Absolutely.
Oh... I've not heard that before. I thought you were using the term in the dictionary sense like "sophomoric". I love b52s from the moment I first heard them on up to everything.
what an excellent band, how can you not like this shit man, sure, you cant take them seriously but thats the point, its just crazy /happy/party music..ive loved b52s for over 30 years, seen them live in new zealand,,great band, love it
i grew up in NYC during the punk phase and the Disco era. I had the good fortune to see them perform at CBGB, The Ritz, and The Cat Club. Their unique sound is timeless and will always be influential.
I first saw The B-52's in 1980 @ The Beacon Theatre in NYC when I was 17 years old... unbelievable... I'm 54 now... WOW... where the hell did the time go... LMAO...
You come here for the nostalgia and then, with a few more miles under your belt, you realize how purely genius this whole album is. Truly a masterpiece.
too far away if you have the same .thiing in carrer curriculum its front 2 front two so much for that . red velvet with gry collar p.s can you make that a silver shiny collor instead of grey.
Listening to it for the first time I'm struck by how much they sound like Joy Division(!), obviously with much more up-beat vocals. There's the same up-front bass and motorik drums.
I saw them perform in Central Park, NYC. What a great show for free. What a wonder crowd as; no weapons, no fighting, and no mugging. Everybody went to party to dance this mess around. Awesome!!!
I know I stand in the minority here, but 'Dirty Back Roads' is one of the most perfect songs ever written. The one-two pacing and the theme make perfect rock and roll. Having spent a lot of time hurling big cars down dangerous stretches of dirt, I can relate to the adrenaline input that probably inspired this song to begin with. Cue up this song and show some footage of rally drivers doing their thing --- not wreckage footage, fuck that, but rally drivers at the top of their game --- and you'll start to understand the emotion that was probably behind this song. Poetry of the machine and controller. The rush of taking chances, foiling the fates, challenging the earth with your machine. It is harmony. And you can't spell 'harmony' without 'harm.'
This whole album rocks! The yellow and red albums I bought on vinyl back in the day 80s 81-83, still have them in mint condition because my brother and I never lent our albums out, not a scratch or skip on any. Just started listening to the B52's and Wild Planet again after quite a few years. Playing it over and over again on the way to work and back home again on my commute blasting it with windows up. Rocking the whole car. Passing youngsters bumping their unoriginal cRap. Quiche Lorraine jams ,Strobe light. Every song on the first two albums totally rock. Rock Lobster, Ricky smoked that guitar and the drums totally rocked toward the end of the song . Appreciate it more now than ever!
My favorite B-52's album, and probably one of my Top 50 all-time. Not a weak track out of all 9. This came out about a week before I started 10th grade and was huge at parties that fall and winter. Polarizing album among my suburban upstate NY friends, you certainly got it or you didn't, no middle ground. Awesome job by Rhett Davies as the engineer for this album. The album always sounded good on my original vinyl, even with a few scratches and pops.
I remember buying the original album as soon as it's release late Summer 1980. Their self entitled platinum album debut from the previous year was the rage! So when BILLBOARD posted the ad for this one I went right out and grabbed it. I was fortunate to see them that November, at The Tower Theatre here in Philadelphia PA. They were on fire ! ! ! I shall never forgot it......ever. True pioneers of the new punk wave. Awesome post!
Don Thapy what makes you say that? YES, of course I have heard, seen, supported and loved those undisputed pioneers, also. They are all a collective along with many others that you've failed to mention.
TONE B HURT Love hearing this. I'll admit to being one of the few who could equally find the pleasures in a band like Nine Inch Nails and the B-52s. For this album, just by itself, Dirty Back Road holds an honesty that some hipsters even in this day-and-age can't really get a grip on. I, for one, will always cherish this album for evoking that feeling without going overboard with histrionics and "meaning"... for anyone who dares to just "live" this song has a lot of meaning.
clivel5755 i totally agree with you, this lp takes me back to 1978 when i was 22yrs old, young, sexy now i'm 58 and over the hill as my young nephews like to tease me with. DIRTY BACK ROAD was my favorite off this lp also, reminds me of a country ride + used it as my e-mail address back in 200-2004 (boy did the business ppl look @ me crazy when they asked for my email address,LOL,i'd tell em "Its A Old B-52's Song" if they were squares i really got a look like "OK Sir" LOL!!!!! ROCK ON B-52's
Totally out there. I am 54 years old & first listened to the B52s in 1981 at school & I thought immediately WOW this is different & they have kept that unique sound for all these years. No one like them. Great band with great individual sound. May they continue. 👍🔊🏆
Just saw them last Saturday night, 8/12/17, at Pershing Square in L.A. Fred fell off the stage but kept singing! It's funny now because he laughed about it. I think we're so lucky they're still touring - what a unique and talented band.
So again my memory beckons, as I "turn and face the strange"? First being blown away (enamoured with Kate) viewing a live, televised, performance of "Rock Lobster" on SNL. At first, I wondered if I was being duped through some demented comedy skit? No way! This was art, and it was fun. So I got the album. Then the collection. (Including Fred Schnieder´s solo album.) Each lyric, style, beat, and remix has a well visited private suite in my frontal lobe. Memories.
David Oney How funny, I saw the same performance by them on SNL and laughed my head off thinking it was a skit the whole time. But i too fell in love with them over the next fews years and bought everything they put out as well including Fred Schnieders "The shake Society". Loved it!
just watched them in a 2011 performance in Athens, GA and they have slowed down a bit (their in their 60's) but the harmonies and band were tight as ever - amazing, campy, fun tunes that get you pogo-ing around the living room!
ayer , hoy y siempre , fiesta total, cada vez que los escucho me sacan una sonrisa , cuantas fiestas con sus temas , mis favoritos, únicos , por siempre the B.52's
As a "native Athenian" (as the social elite refer to themselves as) you are spot on Micah Buzan. These catchy riffs are true pop god-dom and should, can and are, held as the litmus test for the generations then, now and to come....hopefully. They never wear down, never fade, never get tired at all, imho.
yep the B-52s were always a cool band for whoever listened. didn't matter which "crowd" you ran with, if you ever went to a high school dance in the early 80s, you had to be familiar with them to some degree, becuause all the chics were dancing to this.
Every time I hear this band, especially this album, I just got to get up and bounce around, and still remember seeing them at a Berkeley concert. classic for sure
+Alizee Defan I saw them back in the 80's and then again at an Indian Casino here in CA a few years ago. I had this and ALL of their CASSETTES and they kicked ass then....AND NOW TOO!! :)
And the fact that the second album (this one) is just as strong if not stronger (I lean toward that) is HIGHLY unusual in R&R. Usually the second album is more about the record companies demanding something to make money with. Not here, sure it was relatively successful but the musicianship and quality of the material is what makes these two albums so special. Not to mention it was a total departure from music of the day. What only makes it better is that they are from GA, a place not known for the production of Rock acts. Sure REM, Love Tractor, and Pylon were all right behind them but since that spurt from Athens in the late 70s-early 80s there has been nothing.
saw them performing this at the Hollywood Palladium- Magickal, it was in the ballroom with the dance floor. A couple of hours of the best live dance music ever
alison craig Nothing beats honest music, no matter who or what way it comes out. My respect for Ricky Wilson and his effect (notably Keith stepping in) is not lost, even all these years later.
I had albums by the B52s the police , Joe jackso, Elvis Costello Devo, etc. And decied to have a punk party, in an Afro-American area, since my parents were on vacation.what a surprise when All these punk rockers came to house, we had the most fun EVER ! Music is universal
John McDonald No doubt about it. When Cosmic Thing first hit the charts in the late 80s I ran out with my allowance money to buy every cassette (lol) of theirs I could. Would listen to them before watching Friday the 13th (the tv show) on my little 7x5 portable t.v. my folks had bought for me. (I thought I was so hot ish at the time..listening to the b-52s and smoking my swisher-sweet cigars outside of my bedroom window...lol.)
Ricky's guitar playing shines through on this album. Great work on every tune. Nice clear sound that went far beyond the yellow album. Still holds up as an amazing piece of work today! Love the yellow album too!
Good hearing this album again (my cassette has been long gone now). I actually joined the b-52s fanclub back in the late 80s, on a lark. Does anyone remember that? I recall there was a very committed fan in charge of that (years before there was even a whiff of the internet)... does anyone remember that? She stamped the envelopes so you knew it was incoming B-52-affiliated goodness before you even opened the envelope.
Temazo se bailaba en las fiestas de 1981 por ahí al menos en Arica Chile..........hoy no existen bandas tan originales en su estilo, o las hay y me quedé en el pasado, el buen pasado....
There are only a few other bands that understood the shit from 80`s taking over. Maybe Talking Heads. One of the best albums from the period, for sure.
Love it. I have it on vinyl and had a cassette! I heard West of Venus the other day while shopping and realized I don't have a digital copy. Shame on me!

Usually super catchy songs get old after a few listens. These songs are almost 40 years old and they still feel as fresh and catchy as ever.
so true ! $

one of the most innovative & unique bands of all time
95 dislikes???? What´s wrong with these people? 40 years on and it is STILL brilliant! LOve The B52s!!
One of the best sophomore efforts by any band. 1980 I was 15 and way into this album.
fred handy They gave far more than a sophomoric level. They were top tier in their genre.
Also, may be the only time I could ever say I'd succumbed to being groupie.

It's (at least in my mind) about a girl gone crazy sad that her boyfriend died to a shark or something and she's talking to seagulls.
I purchased this decades ago. And again. Atlanta rockers ROCK

one of my all time favourite bands - love their style and voices
I love this....Especially "Give Me Back My Man"......
THEREALCANNA my fave. Then dirty back road.
I concur.
Private Idaho!
Listening to it for the first time I'm struck by how much they sound like Joy Division(!), obviously with much more up-beat vocals. There's the same up-front bass and motorik drums.

+Leonard Schneider Lennie are you kidding or just talking in metaphors?
Too right. Excellent song and fantastic song. Like I was 18 again.
+P Ruper ... He's not talking metaphor but the song certainly is!
Minority or not, you at least deserve a +1 for your eloquence. Write a novel !
I've always thought Dirty Back Roads was metaphorical!
it's amazing how these guys never fail me, i've been listening to these songs for decades and i still love them the same way.
B-52, they are the best band...i like this style...
THEIR MUSIC MAKES ME FEEL INVINCIBLE!!!
just listend to DEVO Q: Are we not men? A: We at Devo! then this popped up....both awesome!
This whole album rocks! The yellow and red albums I bought on vinyl back in the day 80s 81-83, still have them in mint condition because my brother and I never lent our albums out, not a scratch or skip on any.

. Appreciate it more now than ever!
I am proud to possess the original Island's record copy of this LP, recorded in Bahamas in 4/1980. one of my most influential records ever!!!
Awesome and timeless ..
J'ai découvert en 1980 - j’ai adoré. Aujourd'hui rien n'a changé, j'adore toujours autant B-52's Merci pour ces excellents souvenirs
TONE B HURT I guess you've never heard of Billy Idol or the Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Damned, Patti Smith or the Ramones either....eh?
:-)
Don Thapy what makes you say that? YES, of course I have heard, seen, supported and loved those undisputed pioneers, also. They are all a collective along with many others that you've failed to mention.
TONE B HURT Love hearing this. I'll admit to being one of the few who could equally find the pleasures in a band like Nine Inch Nails and the B-52s. clivel5755 Dirty Back Road is IT!!! Played it like crazy. I had a british import 45 single of it too.
clivel5755 i totally agree with you, this lp takes me back to 1978 when i was 22yrs old, young, sexy now i'm 58 and over the hill as my young nephews like to tease me with. Such a tight great album and still have it! Dirty Back Road & Give me Back my Man are such groovy songs! THX!"I'm going to kiss your pineapple!"
Totally out there. I am 54 years old & first listened to the B52s in 1981 at school & I thought immediately WOW this is different & they have kept that unique sound for all these years. No one like them. Great band with great individual sound. May they continue. 👍🔊🏆
Wow the first song was a hit I never stop dancing it when a was a teenager I have a good memories..
Such a unique band...i love em.
Just saw them last Saturday night, 8/12/17, at Pershing Square in L.A. Fred fell off the stage but kept singing! It's funny now because he laughed about it. I think we're so lucky they're still touring - what a unique and talented band.
man....if THIS album doesn't get a party started, you are at the wrong party !
Copy that powerwindow2.
Big smile and upvote
So again my memory beckons, as I "turn and face the strange"? First being blown away (enamoured with Kate) viewing a live, televised, performance of "Rock Lobster" on SNL. At first, I wondered if I was being duped through some demented comedy skit? No way! This was art, and it was fun.
So I got the album.
Then the collection. (Including Fred Schnieder´s solo album.)
Each lyric, style, beat, and remix has a well visited private suite in my frontal lobe.
Memories.
David Oney How funny, I saw the same performance by them on SNL and laughed my head off thinking it was a skit the whole time. But i too fell in love with them over the next fews years and bought everything they put out as well including Fred Schnieders "The shake Society". Loved it!
+Carl Smith A skit? Never occurred to me. Knew Rock Lobster before seeing them, which sealed it.
Though I love Kate and Cindy harmonizing, Cindy just nails Give Me Back My Man. It's got to be my favorite B-52's song.
just watched them in a 2011 performance in Athens, GA and they have slowed down a bit (their in their 60's) but the harmonies and band were tight as ever - amazing, campy, fun tunes that get you pogo-ing around the living room!

Such an Original Sound! Some how always sounds fresh.
My teenage kids say 80's and 90's music is better than today's...
+Enrique Soto They're right....
Enrique Soto You have rased them well.
more like 50's, 60's and 80's, at least that's my personal taste.
adam Healy I like 70s music too. I'm twenty and love them and older music more than today. Same with TV shows.
There were part of the 70ies that were so bad (disco, jazz rock, rock symphonic...) (not everything of course). Punk and new wave wiped all of this
yep the B-52s were always a cool band for whoever listened. didn't matter which "crowd" you ran with, if you ever went to a high school dance in the early 80s, you had to be familiar with them to some degree, becuause all the chics were dancing to this.
Every time I hear this band, especially this album, I just got to get up and bounce around, and still remember seeing them at a Berkeley concert. classic for sure
i was lucky enough to see them live a few times in the UK. F.A.B. Historical note. They famously mis-tuned their guitars for their signature sound.
Saw them twice One of the best "live" acts ever! Fun, tight, entertaining unique
+Alizee Defan Love to hear that others have experienced The B52's live. I saw them at Red Rocks way back in 83'!! Great Band. Great Venue!!
Me 2... saw them twice....amazing.
+Alizee Defan I saw them back in the 80's and then again at an Indian Casino here in CA a few years ago. I had this and ALL of their CASSETTES and they kicked ass then....AND NOW TOO!! :)
Ahh Yeah I am Happy now..Such a Great album!
Oh Still is!
Classic man! they don't make shit like this today!
Best party band out there!

fantastic album,i heard it fist time when i was 14 altaugt i am a blues and jazz enthusiast!
Soundtrack to my life, 30 years ago. OMG this album rocks crocks.
Running around!! Underrated.
I love the B- 52's
Great music!! Wow. As a kid, I never really appreciated the B52s until I became a teenager (1983).
saw them performing this at the Hollywood Palladium- Magickal, it was in the ballroom with the dance floor. A
couple of hours of the best live dance music ever
Time-machine back to a 15 year old me; where does all the time go, and why does it go so blasted fast? thanks for posting.
Me too...and I really don't care what anyone says about the superiority of digital audio; there was simply nothing like my record player and my LPs.
Second album i have love it still and its 2015 now.
Seen them in early 80s at the Ritz ...great show
esse disco marcou minha adolescência... saudosos anos 80, com seus sons e cores.
My favourite B52's album. Their gig at the Hammersmith Palais at around this time, is still up there as one of my favourite gigs I've ever been to.
alison craig Nothing beats honest music, no matter who or what way it comes out. My respect for Ricky Wilson and his effect (notably Keith stepping in) is not lost, even all these years later.
Very interesting album i love this band
Really feelin this album 👌
Gotta love that percussive guitar
Wow, Dirty Back Road is such a good song.
...GOOD TIMES, and GOOD MEMORIES!!!...
I had albums by the B52s the police , Joe jackso, Elvis Costello Devo, etc. And decied to have a punk party, in an Afro-American area, since my parents were on vacation.what a surprise when All these punk rockers came to house, we had the most fun EVER ! Music is universal
She's a sweet, sweet ,sweeeeeeeeeet Puppy........
Great great álbum, one of their best. Got it the original tape, now I can't play it, thanx 4 postin'!
How many cassettes I burn through in my truck as a teenager. Good times!!!!!!!!
Be glad it wasn't 8-tracks, like I did b-4 casettes!. lol.
Love the yellow album too!
gotta love them
wow good music
Good hearing this album again (my cassette has been long gone now). I actually joined the b-52s fanclub back in the late 80s, on a lark. Does anyone remember that? I recall there was a very committed fan in charge of that (years before there was even a whiff of the internet)... does anyone remember that? She stamped the envelopes so you knew it was incoming B-52-affiliated goodness before you even opened the envelope.
Can't get enough of this song.
Man..Living in your own private Idaho... great tune on here.
They're playing the Lane County Fair tonight!!! I'm so excited to see them live!!!
Lucky!
+Monty Diamond They were so much fun!!!!!
Redefined music WAY back in the "early days" of the '70's and '80's for those who dared!
purchase it?? I have the original on vinyl I still listen to.
Vinyl and CD of both the album and the Party Mix. B52s FTW
Love how the cover aesthetic vamps up that early sixties vibe, like their sound actually. A very cool and yet very accessible group.
I only started listening to the B52s a few days ago. They're great and i kind of understand why people consider 'Wild Planet' to be their best album!
most awesome album !
I used to listen to this album years ago. My sister had it on vinyl, and we would listen on her turntable. Brings back memories.
Heská písnička😉😆😮😎
Temazo se bailaba en las fiestas de 1981 por ahí al menos en Arica Chile..........hoy no existen bandas tan originales en su estilo, o las hay y me quedé en el pasado, el buen pasado....
Easily the best band of the last 40+ years. Them and Uncle Tupelo.
Timeless hot stuff....
I can't find my copy CD of this. So, hooray for RUclips.
There are only a few other bands that understood the shit from 80`s taking over. Maybe Talking Heads. One of the best albums from the period, for sure.
very good music to remember the old times lived, encourage with joy on my part ...
The first two albums together stand in a class of thier own. . Pure raw and cool. Just brilliant.
b52 bárbaros en su epoca y su musica excelente saludos desde venezuela
THE VERY GERMAN EXPRESSIONIST ""RUNNING AROUND"',tugs at all our hearts,we've all been there!!
Love it. I have it on vinyl and had a cassette! I heard West of Venus the other day while shopping and realized I don't have a digital copy. Shame on me!
Fala sério, banda mais foda que tem.
B-52's is always the exemplary and greatest band ever
A favorite since I had it as an 8-track! Who's to blame?;)
Wilson's guitar isn't complicated, but he hammers it. I love it.
Fish and candy. Make love to me with your eyes, Cindy.
I was going to buy it, but now I can listen to it here
:D
Have my original vinyl, still spin it!
