What's amazing to me is the polarity of this song against 'Deadbeat Club', it's like one is the first weekend in June, and the other is the last weekend in September. It's like 'Summer of Love' is looking forward to the fun times ahead, and Deadbeat Club is looking back on the memories.
This is how they sing it live. The original version is just too cute and silly. This is just right. I saw them live at Radio City in NYC right after they had achieved major commercial success with "Cosmic Thing". They were successful and obviously excited and yet somehow incredibly sad due to the fact that Ricky Wilson wasn't with them. It remains the greatest concert I have ever seen. People were dancing and crying while they played this song. It was extremely wistful and sad. Cindy Wilson was a super nova that night. Every move she made got people cheering. I honestly was stunned at what they had become. I had seen them many times before but nothing prepared me for this concert. This song was one I had only heard maybe once or twice before in the other version. I was crying along with everybody else.
It's nice to hear a song with just the women singing, just for some variety. They nailed that "summer" feeling with the 'Orange Popsicles & Lemonade' line.
They do this periodically - lately one song each album has them just singing. "Roam" comes to mind on "Cosmic Thing" as does the new hit on this greatest hits album, "Debbie" which is about Debbie Harry of Blondie. Interestingly enough, Cindy Wilson who rarely sings lead the whole song did it on Debbie - when she came back to the band. It made it to #35 on Billboard so it became a hit in its own right.
The B-52's helped transition from the 70s to the fun of the 80s. I like almost every song they have made. I still lament Ricky's passing. I love the great happy energy. Ricky's guitar plaing was unique.
Thanks to my brother and sister, I've been hearing this amazing band since I was a kid. This song is beautiful is like a nostalgic feeling ... The keyboard, lyrics, the ladies voices... I hope I can live a summer of love once more :,)
Polaris Nova Was lucky enough to see them in Austin. Tx early 80's... Probably 5 times, with pretenders, talking heads....tickets where 3.50 ! Piece ...lol ! Great days !
I like this version someone was playing bouncing off the satelittes ages ago when I was in Greece on a funky wooden train around the coastline this music really made it so special
I had a Summer of Music once. Found a Seattle bar with an out-of-this-world DJ... I'd go in there and hang for hours. This cut was one of the discoveries - I'd never heard this version. Still as dreamy as the first time. He also turned me on to My Morning Jacket, Polyphonic Spree, Annuals... with blasts of Dusty Springfield and Bow Wow Wow. I learned to visit there with a freakin notepad.
I saw them play the Legalize Marijuna Festival in Washington D.C. in 1989 with the Butthole Surffers and many others. Fucking Unreal and Glorious! I'm 40 now and would trade everything now just to go back!
Man, this throws me back in time when I was a pre-teen. Hanging out with friends during summer vacations at Knott's Berry farm! It was a much better pleasant time to be. 🤗
This is an older version of the song. The band used a Fairlight C.M.I. II x extensively on the Bouncing Off The Satellites album. Ricky Wilson the B52's guitarist died of A.I.D.S. from a blood transfusion. The B%2's drummer switched from drums to guitar.
The ending of this version is epic, but I miss all the keyboards parts from the album version. In fact, a mixture of the two versions would be awesome !
I'd love to hear something similar, but less sophisticated than George Martin's Strawberry Fields Forever. I'd assemble intro + verse from this version and chorus from the album one. With one small difference - I'd drop the synthetic clapping sound.
Went to see the Hooters at the Mann Music Center, Phila... B52:s opened & Cindy & Kate blew them out of the water Fantastic in every way ....can you say percussion? Just Fab!!!
THis is when you put on your bright yellow jumpsuit with mauve lipstick, gold glitzy eyeshadow pink happy faced underwear, and push up bra that had leopard print. The energy of this song means love is possible, when you love yourself you really love others. JMJ
This may be the original mix, but it clearly sounds like it was remixed in the 90s when it was released. Not quite the original it claims to be. Both mixes are special though.
Fred's absence is too much to bear. He doesn't need to be *as* present as he is in the album version, but to not have him at all is just too much of an anomaly, and the music sounds empty and hallow without his booking voice interjecting his spoken-word soliloquies into the harmonizing rhythms of what essentially makes the B-52's sound quintessentially theirs. 👂💔😢. Nah. May the rest of you find Double the same treats in this this world.
For the longest time, I thought this was the studio release I was listening. In my opinion, THIS is the better version of the song.
i swear this song will never get old to me

This song is really bittersweet (counting that this one is in their last release as a quintet).
It's like a goodbye and an epitaph for Ricky Wilson.
I always thought the same thing too. This version is more upbeat, but there is an underlying somber and sadness because of Ricky’s passing.
@@mmolay Glad I am not the only one who thought this. Happy and sad. Melancholia.
Aint it a shame.
@@sharksport01 Ain't it a Shame tears my heart out, especially Ricky and Keith's vocals on the chorus.

I didnt know Ricky sang on it.

Superb version of this song, much better than the mix on Bouncing off the Satellites.
The Best!
ugh I miss the 80s. I saw them perform at pride 2001. it was unreal.
@ted ritola nope, 85
This song is what nostalgia feels like.

That's crazy... this version sounds like it could be from 2000s alternative. Way ahead of it's time.
My all time favorite B-52 song
By far my favorite version.
I like this version someone was playing bouncing off the satelittes ages
ago when I was in Greece on a funky wooden train around the coastline
this music really made it so special
This gives you a good feeling very upbeat song and very magical......oh this was the 1980's wish it could come back the summer of love.............
was driving through joshua tree and this was the first song that came on. absolute bliss. what a memory.
the organ/synth notes at 7secs and 22 secs are way cool..reminds me of '60's sci-fi flicks
right👍
Their whole first album sounded very sci-fi to me
Classic Tony Mansfield
the best summer of my life...and now im grateful for the memory.

love the sort of dark keyboards in the background in this version, cool contrast!!
This is the only version that matters !!!!
I used to really like this song back in the day. I heard this version for the first time a few days ago and I can't stop listening to it. I love it.
What a lovely energy felt in their early voices...
Orange popsicles and lemonaid.....
Yes, so perfectly positioned in the song too
The guitar reminds me of Andy Taylor from Duran Duran.
Interesting observation
My thoughts exactly!
Neon pastel beachy surf wear, KROQ, 1987, Huntington/Newport Beach~ the Summer of Love🏄👙🍔🍕🍟
I saw them play the Legalize Marijuna Festival in Washington D.C. in 1989 with the Butthole Surffers and many others. Fucking Unreal and Glorious! I'm 40 now and would trade everything now just to go back!
Been lovin this gang for 40 years.
Wow! This is a cool version. The B52's is a one of a kind band, the awesome vocals and the exceptional music they make. Thanks for this
Man, this throws me back in time when I was a pre-teen. Hanging out with friends during summer vacations at Knott's Berry farm! It was a much better pleasant time to be. 🤗
Cool tune .... hadn't heard this semi-trippy version before. Rock on 2's !!!
This song reminds me of driving through the Hollywood hills with the sun blazing in my drop-top Cadillac.
Just magical.
I love its psychedelic ending !!
I'm in love with love love love

this band is still a kick ass band
It is definitely my favorite B52's song.
This song always makes me want an orange Popsicle and an ice cold glass of lemonade.
Everyone transcends here. I'm thinking of you, boy. Love, energy..... I'm in love with the love love love...
The ending of this version is epic, but I miss all the keyboards parts from the album version. In fact, a mixture of the two versions would be awesome !
I've been saying that for YEARS. :)
I'd love to hear something similar, but less sophisticated than George Martin's Strawberry Fields Forever. I'd assemble intro + verse from this version and chorus from the album one. With one small difference - I'd drop the synthetic clapping sound.
OK - I love this version, too!
I LOVE the original one, but this one seems like it's 'LIVE'.
I love this song

One of the best house party bands. The Bay Area rocks.
Casey Moore Non sequitur
Love this song
I like this version better.
video very well done
The nuance scares me a little but I love the boom, boom, boom on the regular da, da dahs...
People who think this is better than the album version need to have their heads checked!
Why?
let's get this up to 1 mill views ! Tell your friends!
imember me my first love of child 1980 good good good tanks!!!!!!!!!!!!
does that legalize festival happen every year or has it been band
😎

This is the version Tom Rubnitz used for the short take of artists against aids (amfar?) In the 80s.
This song is all sweet and gooey. Love it so much. This was a one hit wonder.
+era fina but they have so much more! no one hit wonder......
*****
Yeah I never heard this song on the radio... what is this guy talking about?
so we thought
era fina Sumbody trippin.
S.Y.U.20
Roam was a radio/MTV staple as well.
im surprised how good they were. im more 90s guy and remember their later songs. this main singer cindy is really good.
Marshmello should do a remix of this...
Best version, all this later remixes are so bad, particularly the drums.
Also is it just me or was this song on GTA: Vice City ?
VanielDeeform unfortunately it wasn’t i played that game recently on My PS3. And this song not in there.
Keith is always a slight distance away from everyone in photos. Can anyone respond to that?
He's trying to find the essence from within.

The B-52's are 20x times better without that guy singing.
