I think it needs to be said for those who might be unfamiliar with shotguns that the three large holes were made by the “wad”. The wad is plastic and separates the powder from the shot, keeps the shot together as it travels down the barrel and then separates from the shot after leaving the barrel. The wad only travels a short distance as it has very little mass and will make a hole in the paper or cardboard at a short distance but it will not harm a man or animal.

I could maybe understand using slugs if you live by yourself in a very secluded area out in the countryside but other than that I always tell people don't ever try to use slugs for home defense.
At home intruder range maybe at most 10 feet the shot no matter size is going to be nearly as tight as a slug. I’ve shot a 2” pine tree in two with no. 8 shot at about 8’. The shot doesn’t have time to spread so you still need to be accurate. I think no 4 shot would be a great size heavy enough to be lethal but not as capable of blowing all the way through the house which I think a ball the size of a 9mm is still capable of. Just my two cents.

Idk how far you are shooting at someone in your house, but birdshot is 100% lethal and is far less likely to penetrate your wall and harm someone on the other side, like if you live in an apartment so the same problem with slug you would have with buckshot just now there are more pellets
ER doctors disagree. Birdshot at close range is lethal, and or it stops people. Those little B B' penetrate nicely and cause alot of damage, yet they don't pass thru walls like buck and slugs.
Buckshot will penetrate more than one wall as well as #4 also. If this does not risk a loved one in the next room then Ok. If the risk is there then my choice is #6.
