i love this because clara IS the one that got away (greatest love story the doctor's ever had imho), and also she's the reason twelve finally finds it in him to face river's death -- he may not be able to remember clara anymore, but he learned from her loss that he can't keep avoiding endings, that avoiding them will end up hurting even more, and so it's only after losing clara that he can give river darillium
I used to not ship river and the doctor when I was younger but it grew on me as I grew older. I think both pairings are beautiful (and I was surprised by the amount of parallels I had never noticed until recently!)
