Rock Carnage: Payson to Pyeatt Draw to Mogollon Rim! Part 3 - Ultimate Adventure 2017

- Part 3 of Ultimate Adventure 2017. On Day Four of the Ultimate Adventure we left Payson, Arizona, and caravanned to the rockcrawl trail, Pyeatt Draw. With huge boulders, big ledges, and dry waterfalls, Pyeatt Draw held the potential for carnage. And it delivered on that potential. Any weaknesses the triple-digit heat didn’t expose were soon made evident by Pyeatt Draw’s terrain. Before the end of the day several vehicles would succumb to its hazards with flat tires, broken hubs, a busted motor mount, twisted driveshaft, and some other axle-related issues. While the trail fixes continued, the rest of the group climbed “the filter”, which is a gnarly off-camber waterfall climb at the end of the trail that’s just begging for any driver to make the slightest mistake. A tumbling fall into the dry riverbed below would be the result. Some gave it a whiskey-throttle high-horsepower attack with tons of wheelspeed, some crawled it with a little bump, and some had to resort to the winch cable. With the whole group through, we hit the road and climbed in elevation to one of the most scenic campsites Ultimate Adventure has ever enjoyed on the Mogollon Rim, which the whole group would discover when we woke up on Day Five. Check back as the adventure continues.

Absolutely outstanding!Showing the broken trucks is just the ticket for anyone wishing to get into overlanding so they know what they are getting into from the start.I'm a big fan of the S-10 and seeing one conquer this trail was awesome fun.
Holy shit the front articulateion on that h3 is amazing.
I live in payson Arizona it is amazing. It is beautiful.
Ok, three things.
1. That ledge in the middle of the trail @8:02 where the guy broke his engine mount is "The Filter".
2. The real obstacle at the end is that waterfall you first see @8:22, and then the buggy tries @16:26. The path they are taking @8:33 is the easier bypass.
2b. There is an even easier bypass which is a dirt road along the side of the creek bed.
3. It is an almost universal practice by local wheelers to attach a winch line to that nearby tree at the top of the bypass, not to help pull, but to prevent you dying if you slide off that ledge on the right.
For the love of America, bring back Fred.
Oh he is in there. But last video he looked tired as f. So maybe he decided to just join and have fun this time.
Come back Rick Pewe! You are the best host and trail leader ever
I wrote the article on TrailsOffroad for Pyeatt Draw, one of my favorite trails. The line on the filter is ever so small and most people winch it. You guys did a great job.
"Roadkill style" Love it, I would Love to see Frieburger and Finnigan with these guys.
Really suprised that with all the work on the hummer they skipped out on the beadlocks With a rig that heavy.
I never thought I'd see a H3 do ANYTHING like that :O
Motor Trend, do a "RoadKill Adventure" and post 4 or 5 videos in a row and you'll win back all your disgruntled fans.
Send Tony and Lucky on an adventure to meet up with Fin and Fry for some sort of contest.
Epic journey, epic hosts, epic rides and good times for all.
THIS!
Lankey Bastard wouldn't roadkill adventure essentially be just hot rod drag week? But the second thing would be awesome.
In my eagerness I forgot the "Ultimate" but yeah, no. Not another drag week, we have that. A series of shows showing a build, road trip and challenge, from both sides, culminating into the final episode, an amazing (and as of now unthought of) challenge. Or series of challenges.
Lankey Bastard a hot rod garage vs roadkill build series would be fucking epic.
They should do an episode with the hoonigaans
In the last video you guys literally drove by my backyard when you were in springvalley! i wish i had seen you that day
Oh nice, another chapter in the ultimate adventure!
Thanks guys. :)
Chris Durham is always saving the day!
Great UA Videos so far, loving all three Parts. Wanna go 4 wheelin in USA sometimes, in my homeplace theres nothin to compare to such great drives. Greetings from Germany.
That bronco is a dream rig. That thing is literally just too perfect.
These videos are no comparison to all the previous led by Rick Pewe
Running925 bring back pewe!
Pewe works for a different magazine now. He is on this trip just as an invited friend. But at least they got him to yell "Drivers Meeting!"
At least we still get them, have to enjoy what you get.
my favorite UA ! Arizona has so many wheeling adventures!
"hence going RoadKill style with the hood." lol
Wait? There's another style? I never knew that lol.
yeah l thought the same thing.
Thanks for showing more of the XJ!
I love that Ram. It inspired me to do the same on mine. AEV makes the best stuff
FRED AND PEWE FTW need narrators!
Trent McGee is the narrator, not Christain Hazel. The little that Christain narrated was good. Glad to see the UA back on hardcore trails instead of dusty dirt roads of the prior day. 👍🏻
Guys please learn something for this video. These brave men and women risked it all in the making of this video, The incredible camera work. The crazy skills of the leader or spotter .WOW just incredible. Please again thank these brave men and women especially the leader of the bunch. He has some mad spotting skills. WOW.I Please really comment on what you think. Lets be honest.
feels like I'm watching an ifnomercial with out Fred ...
I live in arizona and never seen so much beauty. I have to trail more!!!
This series is great...
Good times, all fun & games on the trail & great team work. Only downside was the skills & voice of the narrator.
Geez looks like the paved roads in my city.
Good stuff love hitting trials cant wait to get my k20 ready for stuff like that
i love all the different rigs!
NO WAY I DID SEE UA IN PAYSON!! I saw the double end JK and Wayne's K30 when they were getting parts at the O'Reillys in Payson
bannablitz247, yes that was us. No one in Payson had the seal we needed. So we spent a couple hours in the O'Reilly's parking lot, pulled the skid plate, a crossmember, the rear drive shaft the rear output and slip yoke eliminator. Then we straightened the rear output seal that fell out and had gotten bent. Used an exhaust coupler, a piece of 2x4 and a hammer. We bought another exhaust coupler to use as a seal driver. Drove the seal in the slip yoke, and peened around it with a punch so it wouldn't fall out again. Got it back together it time to do about 1/4 of the Payatt draw trail and catch up to the group. The seal finished UA, got us back to SoCal and is actually still in and not leaking.
Awesome as always! Keep kickin ass
Really enjoying this need more like the tank trap
That H3 is quite impressive.
It pains me to see the Howitzer all beat up. What a truck though!
These vids make my day
Motor
That quality inn at the start of the video is not even 4 blocks away from my house!!
Snipps_the_bunny hahaha so many roadkill episodes I can literally see my house or work and I never see them. I'll be watching the episode and see my house, truck, work, BOSS WALKING and just do the Homer Simpson DOOOH!
end preview - ohv trails just north of flagstaff on 89.... woot!
That Dodge is awesome.
it's incredible! yeah, yeah, it's amazing)
Keep em Coming! Love the Vidz!
"it's kind of different for me driving a schoolbus, but I enjoy it." 😂
When I Ran this trail about five years ago, the drop off to the right of the filter had about 4 feet of water in it, so if you did roll you would be upside down in the drink.
We called it a waterfall, but MT called it the filter, same trail different year. Az trails change with the seasons as people and the weather move rocks and relocate lots of gravel. The extreme line the green buggy attempted was pretty much impossible when I ran the trail as your tires would be wet if You didn’t flood your engine on the approach.
Ok two things. Fred should be the host of this show, Second.. Why the fuuuck does it say DED Host next to freds name but not daves?? How fucked up is Motortrend... Dave IS a host of dirt every day. Just how they should put him in the start up of each episode
mike Mitchell thanks for saving the day hero
Its simply not Freds event. the Host is doing fine warrior.
Rick Pewee or Fred please. The voice over narrative during this video made me feel like I was back in a classroom.
Discovered the bridge hiding from Apaches? Those Apaches certainly would've have known about it before than?
he columbesed it
I like that they use cars that are good first ones like the bronco and XJ. Something cool for us people who won't have much money to get a 4x4
Bahahhahahha "hence going Roadkill style with the hood" priceless
Cool stuff brother.... see you in the web
How many times are they going to plug Warn??? It seems like it's all they said for a while.
great video! Thanks for the escape! ha
Like how that ram looks
My first car was given to me. A suzuki sidekick that was the same as geo traker. So i always loved going off road. Now my wife and especially my 5yr old daughter loves going off road. I got a 98 Cherokee classic. A garage screwed me by putting in wayyy over sized sway bar bushings that made my car into a bucking bronco first time on highway when i hit a bump around 70mph. Long story short, i need a whole new front end basically. I don't have the money so outs been sitting ever since, about a year.... sucks cuz i put a good bit of money into it before this happen and had plans to do a junk yard lift.....
My daughter told me she wants the parts to fix the jeep for Christmas. That's my girl! Don't have the money but maybe one day i will.
Toyotas !!!!!!
The diesel power truck is a badass little truck it looks like
It even looks like a Laramie with the passenger side door like that. My 2500 is the same in the interioir
Good video
what kind of tires were on the ram? I like the tread on the side walls.
Super short wheel base works best big rocks
Tubesock is awesome.
is there anywhere i can see the specs on that bronco?
Me encantaria partisipar en un Grupo de estos👍
Im Torn About This Show. Rock Crawlers Doing Overland’er Road Trips..? I Suppose That Explains All The Breakdowns And Opting To Take The More Difficult Lines.
Duraham wrangler 07 grill/fascia?
I like the old CJ. Almost better than the scout.
I want to know about all of the Jeeps with Cummins decals..... I have a 99' WJ with the 4.sl0w, that my crack pipe dream is to strait six Cummins swap.
every time i see the jeep xj its broke down:( or being pulled by another jeep
What seats are in that dodge ram truck?
Merry Christmas everyone. Lets hope we can save civilisation from collapse next year
GOAT McGregor Wut
YAY, TUBESOCK!
Is the rust on that jeep a wrap?
Genial...
so do all the trucks with cummins stickers on them have cummins engines or are they just sponsored
The white Jeep called Tube Sock is running a prototype Cummins R2.8 crate engine.
The Tube Sock white TJ and the UA CJ-6 had the new 2.8 Cummins, and the full-size Ram single cab has the regular Cummins 6.7
A drag racer friend a long time ago explained that some vendors or manufacturers may give sponsorship money to winners that use their parts if they've put the stickers or logos on the car in advance of the winning. No sticker, no opportunity for money.
Plus if you've got a customized vehicle where the work may not necessarily be obvious, like that Cummins 2.8 engine, then the sticker is a way of calling attention to the work you did to install it.
Cummins sponsored the Ultimate Adventure this year and provided stickers/hats/t-shirts to all participants, regardless of whether their rigs had spark plugs or not. As mentioned, the white TJ, bluish CJ6, and fullsize Ram all have Cummins engines.
Cummins was a sponsor this year, everybody gets stickers from all the sponsors
Is there a build sheet on that Cherokee in the group?
Nicks posted alot of info on it online
does warn provide everyone with a winch for ua? is it a requirement everyone own a warn to participate? i have a superwinch and love it!
A winch is required, but it doesn't have to be a Warn. They are the only sponsor of EVERY Ultimate Adventure though, they make great products, and they give participants a discount, so it is a no-brainer to run a Warn winch at UA.
Is it possible if someone from outside US joint these awesome adventure ?
There's no reason you can't just visit, rent a vehicle, and drive these roads/trails yourself. A friend of mine makes the Lake Pleasant to Crown King run two or three times a year in his basically stock '95 or so F150 4x4. Some of the other trails may be a bit too much for his truck but a lot of this run can be done with factory vehicles, albeit the ones meant for severe service.
UA has had participants from Canada and Chile in past years. The catch is that you have to 1) Apply, 2) Be selected by the staff, 3) Pay your own way to get you and your vehicle to the start of the trip.
Owesome reply man, thanks... maybe next year i will planned to joint. Btw i'm from Indonesia n usually drive Toyota LC 40 rhd with 13B diesel engine just for fun in the mud. Is it regulary these event in every year ?
tube sock is the only UA vehicle that has driven under water.
Where’s all the Toyota’s at?!!
i sure hope you unstacked that fall before you left
Where's part 4?!
Love the videos love the wheelying but maybe more trucks, engine sounds, and less talking.
Love the xj, these guys must not have to work regular jobs and still have TONS of money. Must be nice
Terry Brown ha, I wish!
And thanks!
Is that Wayne Lambert or Keith Urban?
I'd like to see what they did with Econoline Sportsmobile van at the Filter...
It was just driven up the access road that parallels the trail (but it would have been rad to see it dragging its bumper up the Filter!)
*grin* a friend of mine (mentioned in another comment already) once snagged his OE rear bumper on his '90s F150 and turned it 90 degrees pointing backward at the bracket coming down off something half that bad.
How topheavy was the van? Years ago before we decided against it I was considering getting one of the Dodge Class-B RVs and trying to do a 4x4 conversion. Thing would have been HEAVY but I wasn't exactly planning on rock crawling with it, just didn't want to get stuck on forest service roads.
Fred Williams is building a 4x4 Winnebago now for Dirt Every Day, keep an eye out for it!
Will do, thanks.
Was the guy welding connected to the car battery? Is that a thing you can do? or did not see a component in the engine bay that is some small ass welder???
Cyril Daley it's a Premier Power Welder.
where did you guys do the voice overs? in a wendys bathroom?
Tim Hardy is never inn?
Nice
What engine is in the amigo?
It is the original 3.2L V6.
man i miss fred from dirt everyday i miss road kill
FRED FRED FRED!!!
Where are the dogs?
Where's the mud ? Oh in the south.
Wish I was younger
Классно!Но если б ещё и субтитры были ваще TOP было)
учи язык, douchebag
брууум бруммм брумм бдыыыж бруум бруум бабамс
More dirt head Dave!
Hi
Saw so many opportunities to go around obsticals instead of through them. Why do you do this when it would be so much easier on your vehicle? Makes no sense at all.
From whom is the music in the beginning?
I'm yawning at yet another rock crawling episode
...What else were you expecting?
I also found the first two words of the video title a little cryptic.......................
It’s like golf. It’s fun to do it, but damn I can barely stay awake watching it.
It's this new narrator they've got this year.
Then go do something on your own
