Just a guess, but I imagine some stuff is so painful all you can do is keep playing the music. Utterly beautiful. Layne and Mike live on in those notes.
You said it best! Jerry pays tribute to his fallen band mates every chance he gets. That band has a great story to tell. Jerry is the stronghold to Alice…..!
Yeah I feel the same thoughts it’s a sort of look back on the good times through playing the songs like yes this is one of their most recognized songs (tbh their whole discography is beyond words every song is a gem) and yes this song was written during a very dark time in their lives but it’s not even about that anymore it’s about keeping their friends memory with them as it should be no matter where they go or do Layne is forever and as well as Mike too RIP to both
You know what is so great about Jerry? The thing I've never seen him credited for is the thousands (maybe) of interviews that he's done that inevitably go back to talking about Lane without him snapping. I think I watched one moment where he vocalized this, but consider the many times that he didn't, and played it off with class. That's Jerry Cantrell class.
I’m sure it’s probably been at least hundreds of interviews and you’re right he always handles those interviews so well. Since the beginning he’s always demonstrated a level of calmness which had to have been difficult especially in the months following Layne’s passing. He’s always been a very chill guy though, very down to earth.❤️
His dexterity, feel, and flow are unmatched by any other rock drummer I’ve heard. Him, Jimmy Chamberlain, and Matt Cameron are 3 of the best rock drummers to ever walk the earth
I have always this mixed emotions everytime I play this song from them.. sad and happiness and I don't know why. but overall it brings me back to good old memories during my teenage years. RIP Layne Staley and Mike Starr, you are dearly missed! Keep in on Jerry and Sean this is so meaningful. Thanks for sharing this video I love it!

I’m sure it was a heavy decision to make to continue on without Layne, as well as who to choose for vocals in this new era of AIC. I’m glad they chose to move forward and they couldn’t have chosen a better vocalist than William.❤️
Jerry has always been so good at evoking emotion with his guitar playing. I can only imagine every time he plays this song his emotions transfer to his playing and that feeling will never go away for him.❤️
Alice in chains my favorite grunge band ❤🎸🎸 i love all songs ❤ layne you were eternalized Forever in the history of rock 😎😎 greetings from Brazil 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇧🇷🎶🎶
This shit always brings me to tears and hurts my soul inside but is at the same time bringing it joy and healing my wounded heart.....simply so beautiful through and through.
Nutshell was always near the top of my list for favorite AIC songs, but after they opened their MTV unplugged set with this song, it not only instantly became my all time #1 song of their's, but that acoustic version became my go to instead of the album version as it is just so powerful! Losing Layne was no doubt devastating, but finding and adding William was a brilliant choice! Can he sing like Layne...no...not many can, BUT William isn't too far off and he brings so much passion in his singing.
Well, Duvall could never replace Layne, just as you can't replace Chris Cornell or Chester, but l he tries, and I'm so glad that there is still an A.I.C. to listen to. The later albums made with William are truly his and really really good, it's just you can't replace an icon on the ones he sang before you. Jerry is unbelievable, and I'm glad he's still making music !! Rock on boys !!
Great job on this one by William! I loved Layne! We all did and still do! Thanks for keeping the legacy going! The audience singing gives me chills! Great performance! Anyone with the balls to sing this and so we'll makes my hear happy!
Damn lol as soon as I heard “play for the boys” I balled my eyes out. 6 months sober here this has killed so many. Today is all that matters god bless ❤

@@Bella_X omg. Do you want my email. I got my tickets last night for march 11 at wellmont theatre in Montclair no. I’d love to see your vids and ask you about the show. So awesome
watching this video then realizing I was at this concert. Love layne and yes as he is a legend, i personally think Duval is an awesome replacement. all works well
I love Cantrell but without Layne, it's just not the same. They've definitely had some epic music come out with DuVall but, to me, Layne and Jerry's harmonisations made AIC as great as they are. The pain in Layne's vocals helped many of us through dark times. I'll always be a Layneaholic.

I don’t feel a lot of people take into account how heavy this choice was, to choose between quitting or moving forward. While all of you have the right to your own opinions Jerry, Sean and Mike had the right to begin a new era with the remaining members of AIC, respectfully.
Walked into my favorite bar yesterday. Only 2 girls in there playing pool. After listening to their 10 song stretch of country on the jukebox, I played my usual, which starts with some AIC. I hear the chic complain to her friend, that she didn’t like this song, which was real thing. Then this song comes on. She walks up to the bar to get a water close to me, and says to the bartender, who’s playing this stuff. I’m like, I am, she goes, yer gonna make me cry, I responded, I had to cry listening to your country music! 😂
i LOVED the Music Bank box set they released 20 years ago or so. there were a shit-load of great liner notes, some of them very personal, including the stories behind “Nutshell” and “Rooster”. painful and beautiful to read. RIP Layne and Starr…
@@randybrinkley my apologies i did alot of research and glfound that out. It was tragic none the less. Layne had such a unique voice and so much pain in the words.

just wanted to add i'm reading the desola BOOK, great insights! I really just started listening to the whole discography last year and dont follow was the first song i heard and i was hooked with that and the obvious blues influence and harmonizing vocals that isnt very common in rock bands.
Thanks! It was the only show I attended where he did the solo by his mic stand. The others shows he did it on the opposite end of the stage. I was so happy I was able to capture this!
I’ll never forgive myself for not going in Bend Oregon. I had the tickets and work got in the way, I should have just gone, this was once in a lifetime!!
To each their own, but AIC was the Layne Staley/Jerry Cantrell harmonies. William Duvall is talented, but it hasn't been Alice In Chains since Staley's death. Staley made this song heartfelt & haunting, Duvall is just singing someone else's song...
To each their own indeed, but what a different world it would be if every single band that lost an original member just decided to give up after said band member passed away. A lot of music wouldn’t exist if that were the case.
“We’re gonna play a song for the boys, Layne and Mike” perfect
It absolutely was a perfect night.
This song will forever be a time machine for me. I can close my eyes and be transported to 1994 at any moment. RIP Layne.

this fucking song man. it hits me deeply ❤️❤️
Every time man, every time.😭😭😭
Layne Forever!!!
Hell ya! I was there on the left side of the stage
Alice In Chains got me through some dark times
I imagine they got quite a few of us through some very dark times.
great solo coveraGE
Thanks! It was the only show I attended where he did the solo by his mic stand. The others shows he did it on the opposite end of the stage. I was so happy I was able to capture this!
@@Bella_X appreciate you sharing a little more about it.
I’ve looked for a decent cover of this song and nothing comes close enough
It was a good night and they performed this song so well.
Aaron Lewis is decent I guess

I cried when he played this live 😢
Holy shit awesome
I’ll never forgive myself for not going in Bend Oregon. I had the tickets and work got in the way, I should have just gone, this was once in a lifetime!!
I’ve heard there is definitely a new album in the works. You’ll get another chance.☺️
❤❤❤
I love jerry Cantrell.
Love and miss Layne
Thanks for sharing!❤
You are so welcome!☺️ Watch this space for more videos of Jerry coming next month.
@@Bella_X Thank you so much!
Is that Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys (starting at 4:07) with a full size camera capturing the show?
I don’t know is it?🤷🏻♀️
I’m definitely playing this song at my funeral!
It seems to be a common choice amongst us AIC fans.❤️
To each their own, but AIC was the Layne Staley/Jerry Cantrell harmonies. William Duvall is talented, but it hasn't been Alice In Chains since Staley's death. Staley made this song heartfelt & haunting, Duvall is just singing someone else's song...
To each their own indeed, but what a different world it would be if every single band that lost an original member just decided to give up after said band member passed away. A lot of music wouldn’t exist if that were the case.
❤❤❤🎸
@Fulton_Jr like to meet and greet you🎸
5:10 onward epic!
