This is a very, very powerful comment. I'm only 26 and this became the band for me around 6 years ago. I can only hope to keep experiencing such things 50 years from now.
steve, this comment couldn't be more accurate. I love to play guitar, bass, drums, but the guitar is the only instrument i feel i can express myself through and not many can do it like Jerry!
Not even just the solos he’s been the primary songwriter the entire bands history and has written most of their most famous songs including the lyrics. One of the best songwriters of all time.
Oh trust me...anyone who knows anything about music/composition/guitar etc know exactly how powerful Jerry is. The only people who throw shade at him are players who think you need to shred on every solo. Jerrys catalog with AIC and solo is one of the most perfectly complete bodies of work any artist has ever released
David Lane Layne owned Nutshell . I truly wanted to hate DuVall, however, kudos to him he doesn’t try to sound like Layne because no one can. Unlike STP’s replacement for Scott who tries to imitate him and fails miserably.
I feel so fuckinig bad about Jerry, all of his friends in music just happen to die... Layne, Mike, Dime, Chris and now Vinnie... the man must be made of iron by now to take it. I hope he manages to still strong for many years to come.
I was just saying that to my buddies today the scary part is he’s fought addiction and been clean for awhile now, I just hope he doesn’t turn back to it during these tuff times..
jeb0112 Last July 1 Jerry celebrated 15 years of sobriety. The guy has been through so many heartaches. His grandmother and mom died 6 months apart when he was 21 and since then he's lost so many. I'd like to think that Jerry has a good support and set of friends surrounding him to keep him in the right path.
My big Brother died yesterday from overdose complications. It was one of the first songs he taught me on the guitar. Im gonna play it on the funeral on friday in honor of his memory. He was always so proud of my playing...
Curt Gipson I think it's a lot of stuff. The history, his body language and just the mere fact that he's not showing off. It's straight from the heart. He means every note.
Except that one crowd surfing kid. Doesnt fit good in that scene/song but i think he was drunk and had a good time - so fuck it - rock n roll - lets do it!

He has a good voice but he doesn't feel the lyrics and it seems like he tries to hard. No one will be able to do it like Layne though, and he truly lived it and his voice was one of the most unique voices ever.
Honestly, I'm pretty sure Layne would be watching this thinking "Thank fuck they got someone good enough to do it properly". Duval's a really good vocalist. Fans will have all kinds of opinions about all kinds of imaginary bullshit, musicians generally have a much clearer view of things; a side effect of actually making music and playing instruments/vocals. It's rare to find actual musicians (which Layne was) shitting on people for arbitrary crap when it comes to music, they just listen to what they can do. Duval sounds awesome and does the music the justice it deserves. I'd have a really hard time believing that Layne wouldn't have instantly seen that. Yeah, I'm pretty sure that he'd have approved.
@HellOWorld precisely, I'm just beyond happy Alice In Chains is still around and still touring and writing new music, William doesn't, and doesn't want to for that matter, replace Layne, in music the word "replace" gets used too often and I hate it, it sounds wrong, he is carrying the candle that Layne lit and is helping cement the memory and legacy of Layne Staley and the music of Alice In Chains, in fact, lets say, for arguments sake, there was a heaven, and Layne was up there right now watching Will and the band, he would be beyond happy to see someone doing what he is no longer able to do, to know he is remembered and missed and the music he helped write is still loved, if William was at that original rehearsal when Layne saw all the horrible singers audition for AIC, honestly, he more than likely would have said, you don't need me, there is your singer, he is amazing
Will is an addition to Alice in Chains -- not a replacement. Plus, he brings a solid guitar as well for live shows. Glad he's a part of the band and they're able to soldier on.
CB Salar I 💯 agree with you.. he’s definitely grown on me.. it’s totally obvious that he’s a fan because he doesn’t try to emulate Layne, but instead Honors him.. I like him a lot 😊👌

MrTechselect I always felt growing up those guys Kurt, Chris, layne, Dime, Scott and the alive and well Eddie (thank god) knew something I didn't like they had it all figured out but that's not how things really were at all
cobain/ vedder Sadly the majority of them I always had a gut feeling weren't long for this world. I was a teen in the 90s. I read about Kurt's, Scott's and Layne's addictions. It was all over MTV. It was a pretty public ordeal of rehab and relapse. When AIC announced they would stop touring. I knew something was going to give and sadly that came true. The biggest shock for me was Chris and Dime. Chris seemed like he was pass all that. Dime too. He has a fresh start with Damage Plan and they were good.
I remember buying the Jars of Flies album when I was in high school. That same week, a friend of mine died of heart failure unexpectedly. I listened to the whole album over and over again. Most of the songs, particularly this one, made me think of my friend. God rest my friend's soul, along with the souls of Layne Staley, Dimebag Darrel, Mike Starr and Vinnie Paul in Jesus' name.
I'm trying keep my chin up listening to Had To Know- Oh. I Wanna Know alright. 😊😮❤ Emp-Suburbs of Philly Now ATONE WOW Don't ya just love this? I just know you could sit down with Jerry and Talk human being to human bring
4:24 Jerry looks so intense here. Dude's just looking right through the crowd. It is almost like he staring at his past and telling it "No, not me. You didn't take me, motherfucker". Fucking Legend.
@@tracybush1970 is he supposed to ha? This is a band not a tribute act. He's not Layne but a good singer with his own style. A slightly worse Alice is still better than 95% of other bands.
Chills during Jerry looking off into the sky during his solo......probably thinking about Layne, Mike, Vinnie...... and anyone else they've lost along the way....
i seen the mtv unplugged live when i was younger. opening with this song you knew it was gonna be a masterpiece. and when they finished the song i then knew that the unplugged set was gonna be the crown of their music. it touches the soul. hands down the best
You know, the longer out from Layne’s death we get, the more I like DuVall. Sure, it’s not the same AIC, but Cantrell always has been the heart and soul of that band. Layne was the best rock and roll singer we’ve ever had in my opinion. Nobody has ever sounded anything like him. But it’s been a long time, AIC is still putting out solid grunge tunes. When Layne first died, I swore I was done with AIC, but over time, I’ve bought every album they’ve made and for the last 2 years I’ve been looking for a concert around Syracuse ny. I will be going. All my grunge icons have died, I regret not seeing these guys sooner.
Did you ever get around to seeing them live? Duvall does great and Jerry absolutely crushes it like he always has, they’re amazing live and adding Duvall as a 2nd guitarist really makes their new stuff sound great live, one of the best live bands around, if you still haven’t seen them you gottta make that a priority, they’re so good
I believe Layne was the soul of AIC. The “new AIC is good, I enjoy the music but I don’t seek it out and listen to it the way I do the original band. There can NEVER be another Layne in my book.
@@cynthiahutchinson459Kinda like Pantera without Dimebag. Just not into it. But good on them for getting back to doing what they love. Can’t knock that aspect!
@@nordicpride9708 at least Zakk is playing the closes he can to Dime and they were friends. I'm glad they're doing it (just like AiC has been doing it) because I wasn't old enough to go to a concert when they split and Dime died. Now I finally had the chance to watch the closest to a full Pantera lineup we can ever get.
I always found it incredible that AIC can go from something like Dirt to Jar of Flies. Not many bands can pull off such a dramatic tone shift from album to album without alienating their fanbase, but Alice in Chains were masters of it.
It’s because Jerry is one of the best songwriters ever and also an extremely versatile one, he can write killer heavy riffs for stuff like them bones but he’s also fantastic on acoustic and can write stuff like don’t follow or whale & wasp or the nutshell music etc. one of the best to ever do it and then obviously Layne was one of the best singers ever and Duvall himself is a great singer, just a very versatile band in general.
@@smudlicko just lyrics, the only 3 songs in AICs history that Jerry wasn’t a writer on are head creeps/hate to feel/angry chair. Meanwhile there are like 20+ tracks alone from just the Layne era of AIC where Jerry wrote the entire song alone, that includes almost all their biggest hits like would?/down in a hole/rooster/them bones. Jerry was a certified hit maker and one of the best songwriters ever
No he's not... he may not be popular with newer gens and "radio" or streaming services, but everyone worth their salt know what a geniuos he is. Underrated as in he should be know by more people given his contributions to music, yes there I agree
Renzokuken Leneyoyo He is a legend and a lot of people know that but he’s still underrated, he’s rarely put on top guitarist lists and when he is it’s usually far down in the list. Ppl who’re really into that type of music obviously know Jerry is one of the best rock musicians ever but I’d still say he’s slightly underrated
I was a insecure, depressed teenager . This band was always my medicine . My escape if I wanted to run from my problems and my strength when I was to face them. Thank you Alice in chains. Rip layne.
Loved Duval the second I heard him sing the first time. No, he's not Layne. He was never meant to be Layne or a replacement. He's a new addition moving forward, creating new music and memories. I feel like many Alice in Chains fans need to hear that you can love Layne, Alice in Chains, and Duval all at the same time. I've loved every album Duval has been in as much as I've loved every Layne album. They both have their own styles that fit and make Alice in Chains.
Ya know, for years I've kind of dismissed the new vocalist.. cause no one can replace Layne, but damnit, I gotta give it to the guy for being as talented as he is and getting on with the band. That's a huge honor. I'd imagine he is as big a fan of the songs as we all are. Congratulations brother. RIP DIME, VINNIE and LAYNE
Man Will has always said, he is not here to replace Layne, as no one can, he says he is just a fan living the ultimate dream. I took them with an open mind since I hear the first leaks of this "new" AiC and have seen them now on their 3 album tours. To a certain extent, thanks to Will's talent and love for the band and the songs we still get Jerry, Sean and Mike here with us doing what they, and we, love so much which is Alice in Chains music!
Agreed. I didn't care for him, but this performance solidified it for me. It doesn't have to be Layne, but he has enough of the same ingredients to fit this band really well and still be his own artist.
For real. Will nails this one. He seems like such a cool guy, too. He's always been so respectful of the shoes he's standing in for and does an amazing, original job doing it.
One of the best bands ever. Had the pleasure of working on Voices with them. Had a beer and a good convo with them. Still down to earth. Still kicking ass. It was 105 degrees in NJ that day but well worth it.
Dude that is an amazing experience! Thumbs up... and Voices was along with breath on the window my fav Dinosaurs cut! Such a great song and homage to fallen friends
Ive been listening to AIC for around 30 years. There will never be another voice like Layne's, but this is pretty damn good. One other thing; every time I hear Layne sing this, especially the MTV Unplugged version, I can't help but cry because you know these lyrics come from a dark, lost, tortured soul. RIP Layne. ALWAYS REMEMBER.
I totally agree brother. Im a musician and have struggled with addiction most of my life. I wouldn't wish it on anyone! Real music in my opinion has to come from somewhere. Its pure and true. And its not easy to bear your soul on stage to thousands of people. Just like Eddie singing black. God bless and take care brother.
Just listening to different versions of Nutshell solo, performed in different years. Without a doubt - the solo version of this video is the most powerful and beautiful. It sounds so special...
I find myself regularly coming back to this performance of nutshell. It just sounds so huge and the late afternoon sun seems to fit the vibe perfectly in this instance. Jerry's solo absolutely massive at the end
For sure! I'm backwards,I never liked AIC,untill I heard ,your decision,I did like down in the hole, millionaires, with a good reason to live! I was on pain meds for 26 years,dr prescribed, I never went to.the dumb shit,I seen it kill to many friends! Your gonna die,why speed it up?
It gives me hope and lifts me up to see thousands of like minded people in live concert venues feeling like I feel when I listen to certain songs like this one. I live in a town where nobody seems to give a damn or appreciate anything. Makes me feel even more isolated. I think to myself am I the only one that gets this? Maybe it’s just me. Maybe I’m just crazy, weird, psycho. All things I’ve been called. Then I go to a concert and see thousands of people enjoying it and I literally get kinda emotional and in that moment don’t feel alone and it gives me the strength to go on. The world would be so much a better place if everyone used blessings like music to unite!!!!
Brian Kemper I don't for one second want to take away from the song at hand, but look up The Darkness Within by Machine Head, if you can find the version with the spoken word at the beginning, it talks about exactly what you are talking about.
This is too beautiful to even put into words... The emotions with this song is just so different from the rest. RIP Layne, Vinnie, Dimebag, Chris, Kurt \m/
At this time i had Come home to the uk from living in SA for 5 year's, mum had cancer, but pregnant wife back in SA with my son and heard the news about vinnie paul. Slayed me. But then i heard this performance..holy shit...the power of music. Mum passed in July just gone was hard to see her battling again 5 yrs later succumbing after a brave battle.. my dad having to witness the pain of his loved one of 60 yrs. Its been fucking hard but this song and performance always lifts me❤❤❤❤❤😢
There is a sadness & transparency in William's voice that carries this song to different depths then it's held for me in the past. Musicians & artists that share their gifts with us all. If AIC tours again...for me it's probably time to get back out to a live show.
When i saw them back in 2019 in Minneapolis this one they played hit hard home man, i was about to graduate and i didnt really know what was next. I was getting teary at the concert.
This made me tear up man. Freaking beautiful. A.I.C has been a part of my life since the early 90's and their music still hits the same as it did when I was 13.

sparky genocide I’m sorry for your loss bro. They are all looking down on us & smiling now!
Gerry Cantrell is the David Gilmore of Grunge.
A phenomenal and intelligent guitarist
Great way to put it.
Perfectly spoken.
❤ Yes he is truly a special kind a guy. SPECIAL KINDA MAN.🎉😊 Whoa!!
I'm trying keep my chin up listening to Had To Know- Oh. I Wanna Know alright. 😊😮❤ Emp-Suburbs of Philly Now ATONE WOW Don't ya just love this? I just know you could sit down with Jerry and Talk human being to human bring
DuVall has a great vocal and Jerry's solo hurts right in the feels
Same man!!! I teared up first time seeing this tbh
4:24 Jerry looks so intense here. Dude's just looking right through the crowd. It is almost like he staring at his past and telling it "No, not me. You didn't take me, motherfucker". Fucking Legend.
Absofuckinlutely
Everyone stop hating on them playing and singing it. They deserve it especially Jerry.
❤❤❤
And this song already always saddens me becuase it reminds me of how we lost Layne. Sleep well, Vinnie.
id love to hear vinnie paul dime layne and mikes version of this.. id say there definitely playing it somwhere in heaven
Danny Ennis They play this song in purgatory not heaven. But we can dream right?
+Kyo Ackerman
. How does it "remind" you?
@@dannye3325 oh my god... reading your comment made me realise they got a full band now in heaven :'( bass, guitar, drums and vocals
Jerry looks like a God of War 4 boss, a guitar god from Norse mythology
Btw...his maternal grandmother was from Norway (wikipedia source).
I truly believe he is a guitar god from Norse mythology
Like the others said, he reflects his ancestory. The dude is legitimately a Viking guitar god.
Naa! He looks like a whitewalker knight. Haha!
You have best comment ❤️
Jerry is the man. Highly underrated and overlooked.
As far as I concern they could go on forever with that solo at the end.
Jerry Cantrell is a legend. Period.
I just thought the same
Duvall nails this and all in his own style. Spectacular
Will is an amazing part of alice, as much as Jerry, Mike, Mike, Layne and Sean are.
Nails it...!!??? No doubt about it, he is a great singer. He doesnt sound like Layne at all....
@@tracybush1970 Maybe because he isnt Layne???????? Your comment is so dumb
@@tracybush1970 is he supposed to ha? This is a band not a tribute act. He's not Layne but a good singer with his own style. A slightly worse Alice is still better than 95% of other bands.
Not..no way no how he nailed it..sorry....
Chills during Jerry looking off into the sky during his solo......probably thinking about Layne, Mike, Vinnie......
and anyone else they've lost along the way....
Layne was such a great singer and you can't ever replace him but this guys has a great voice and I'm sure Layne would approve.
Living Haiti I love old Alice I love layne too, never forgotten....💔
Great comment!
He is spot on with Layne. I never thought someone could sound like him again. He does an amazing job.
he defo does a good job..love aic yes of course i prefer old stuff. but the 3 albums with duvall very solid. pleased there still going strong.
I agree he can never be replaced but this guy does a hell of a lot better than I ever expected for someone to have to follow in layne's steps.
Their MTV Unplugged is THE BEST
Anthony Rivers facts
Yessssss!!!! He totally bared his soul.in that whole moment. Raw as music gets
hands down the finest Unplugged...
Amen to that. Was 13 first time I learned of AIC. DIEHARD FAN SINCE. BEST LIVE PERFORMANCE OF ANY SONG IVE EVER HEARD IN MY OPINION
i seen the mtv unplugged live when i was younger. opening with this song you knew it was gonna be a masterpiece. and when they finished the song i then knew that the unplugged set was gonna be the crown of their music. it touches the soul. hands down the best
Man... Jerry's guitar tone. Right in the feels.
Layne Staley Forever
MICHAEL MAYERS Ceifador that’s my name brother
Layne Staley Forever I love layne Staley .....forever love and missing him.......
cks? 3 letters short?
Till we meet again 🤘🤘✌️✌️
Duvall does great and Jerry absolutely crushes it like he always has, they’re amazing live and adding Duvall as a 2nd guitarist really makes their new stuff sound great live, one of the best live bands around, if you still haven’t seen them you gottta make that a priority, they’re so good
Syracuse ... yes
Great call dude..the darkest band out of the Seattle scene but so relatable as well.Awesome band
@@puppetmaster8551 nutshell was Layne song I believe or only a text ?
@@smudlicko just lyrics, the only 3 songs in AICs history that Jerry wasn’t a writer on are head creeps/hate to feel/angry chair. Meanwhile there are like 20+ tracks alone from just the Layne era of AIC where Jerry wrote the entire song alone, that includes almost all their biggest hits like would?/down in a hole/rooster/them bones. Jerry was a certified hit maker and one of the best songwriters ever
Such a heavy performance.. jerrys riffs move mountains.
Jerry is an underrated soloist
No he's not... he may not be popular with newer gens and "radio" or streaming services, but everyone worth their salt know what a geniuos he is.
Underrated as in he should be know by more people given his contributions to music, yes there I agree
Every single person I know who knows him recognizes him as one of the all time greats.
RebelSlash Fuckin-A
Renzokuken Leneyoyo He is a legend and a lot of people know that but he’s still underrated, he’s rarely put on top guitarist lists and when he is it’s usually far down in the list. Ppl who’re really into that type of music obviously know Jerry is one of the best rock musicians ever but I’d still say he’s slightly underrated
Nope, far from underrated...
I was a insecure, depressed teenager . This band was always my medicine . My escape if I wanted to run from my problems and my strength when I was to face them. Thank you Alice in chains. Rip layne.
me fr.... I hope that i grow out of it
Hope you’re doing well now man, long live AIC, they’re still making good music and helping people get through life.
Need to get out of this loop. Ive ruined my life because of depression, these songs are so powerful to me and will ever be.
Such a hauntingly beautiful song.
Bless William DuVall. He has been spectacular filling a big role and adding to the guitars has increased their sound
Amen!
Literally in tears from Jerry’s solo. ❤️
That solo is incredible and the best version of it.
i'll ncver get tired of this song
Me neither.
I'll never tire of this album💝
Same
my stomach turns into a knot when I hear this song. So many emotions and memories tied to the 90's for me.
Me too💝
Same ✨
I sang this song w/an old friend once while he played guitar- he took his own life many years later. It still hits hard every time I hear it!
What about Mike? Come on man
totally respect the way he heads to the back when Jerry goes for the solo
William gave new life to Alice. While she's not who she was, she's still pretty fucking great.
Agreed. I didn't care for him, but this performance solidified it for me. It doesn't have to be Layne, but he has enough of the same ingredients to fit this band really well and still be his own artist.
Layne , I miss you
As do i...😭 beautiful man inside and out
Me too omg 😢⋯⋯
Still miss him
Same these new generation bands dont sing from the heart or gut it's all processed rip Layne forever cherished
It’s not shown here, but Sean’s main kit has the letters “LSMS” written on his bass drum. (Layne Staley/Mike Starr). Very nice tribute.
There’s something about the vibrato that Will adds to his vocals that just makes me wanna weep...absolutely beautiful.
Rest In Peace VP!!!
Yup. Goosebumps.
Well said!
For real. Will nails this one. He seems like such a cool guy, too. He's always been so respectful of the shoes he's standing in for and does an amazing, original job doing it.
Me too
omg jerry thats an amazing guitar tone..
Such an incredible band. Jerry is the heart of it.
This song touches the heart.
No one could ever replace layne but Duvall does such a good job. Awesome voice
Damn, Jerry's tone is gawdlike son.
Jerry is godlike
For sure 👍 it's super distinctive
I wanna look like Jerry when I'm old
You're gonna need some norse genes for that, brother
OcelotDAD His maternal grandmother was from Norway, and his maternal grandfather was from Czech Republic.
nice name
Hes hot af still
I think im gonna end up a big old pile of them bones before i get that old.
Jerry Cantrells guitar playing is so amazing!
Cantrell is a legend man. Nobody plays more soul touching solos and riffs like he does. His solo here brought tears to my eyes
Hard to not have goosebumps and a teary eye in this beautiful dedication.
Duvall kills it. RIP Vinnie,Dime, Layne and Mike...so many others. The afterlife must sound incredible
Jerry’s Tone is monstrous ✊🏼🤘🏼
Remarkable how Jerry feeds his emotion through his guitar. Moving ❤️
Love me some Jerry Cantrell 😍😍😍
Just listening to different versions of Nutshell solo, performed in different years. Without a doubt - the solo version of this video is the most powerful and beautiful. It sounds so special...
I find myself regularly coming back to this performance of nutshell. It just sounds so huge and the late afternoon sun seems to fit the vibe perfectly in this instance. Jerry's solo absolutely massive at the end
Just broke down against the barrier as they played the first chords and cried all along... that was amazing, as usual
RIP TO ALL FALLEN LEGENDS! HENDRIX, MORRISON, COBAIN, LAYNE, VINNIE, LEMMY...CANT NAME EM ALL!
Call Me AfterWords and Dime!
And Andrew wood
Call Me AfterWords Chris and Chester and Scott.
You can't forget shannon hoon
Call Me AfterWords Thank you Mr. Lennon
Man. Jerry Cantrell still has it👏🏻
Staley would be proud of Duvall, rip angel.
Duvall, does it justice. 🤘❤❤❤❤
My question to all Duvall haters
IF. LAYNE. WOULD. COULD. YOU?
He's amazing.
I don't get why he would have any haters.
Would love to see dime come out play with them!! He was so nice!!
You’re not alone. Stay away from your TV. We’re all just taken a break. Stay tuned my friend.
You got your head on your shoulders, it's all positive. You're good my dude!
No words can explain the feelings this song gives to you inside your soul.
Its been fucking hard but this song and performance always lifts me❤❤❤❤❤😢
Damn... So much emotion bursted through my speakers. I almost let out a tear. R.I.P fellas
Jerry's voice breaking at the beginning was too much, man.
Duvall is so perfect. One of my all time favorite bands. Both versions!
There is a sadness & transparency in William's voice that carries this song to different depths then it's held for me in the past. Musicians & artists that share their gifts with us all. If AIC tours again...for me it's probably time to get back out to a live show.
Every year i hear this same video, and i still think this is the best guitar solo of Jerry Cantrell...
You can tell Jerry misses his friends so much. Definitely my favorite guitar solo from him
The guy just never ceases to amaze...
Wow a few songs bring me to tears this is one of them, amazing guitaring , amazing performance
Seen them 4 times in the early 90s. Jerry is a killer guitar player. Layne can sing ANYTHING.
There’s something so strong and powerful about this song that I feel whenever I listen to it. Anyone else feel that?
what a magnificent solo at the end
Amen
Beautiful & heartbreaking tribute 💔 RIP all of them 🌹⚘🌹⚘
It took me 43 year, but holy shit I’m glad I found AIC
Now it’s all I listen too
I must've watched this 1000 times by now
You could hear the emotion In Jerry’s voice before the start.. Love Jerry Cantrell and William crushes this for sure ☝🏼☝🏼Respect
Awesome! Jerry Cantrell still rocks and one of the top ten greatest guitarists of all time in rock!
Beautiful performance.... Love the solo jerry played
Beautifully done! Lots of emotions in that song. RIP
