H.U.N.K and Ghost both being minor characters in their games' stories but both become fan favorites, and both never show there face much if at all. Starting to think if you're a badass that always wears a mask, then fans will love you no matter what importance you have to the story
I don't know where the canon sits now, but as I recall HUNK survived the Raccoon City event. Not only did they survive, they canonically were untouched.

For how batshit insane HUNK seems it’s actually pretty down to earth and realistic (in most iterations) hypothetically, if you had spot on aim, advanced tactical prowess, knowledge in the undead and weaknesses, and highly advanced military training. You could absolutely escape a lot of these scenarios no matter how bleak they seem. Take the 4th survivor extra mission for example, with his materials at hand, he has enough, if not more than enough to push through to the escape with the use of his highly advanced tactics and training. HUNK is that hypothetical guy, he is the peak of what could be humanly performed.
He dosent even have plot armor in most iterations either. Hell I’d even argue he’s nerfed a bit because I know damn well a regular zombie bite is not piercing his hi-tech spec ops’ armor or leather/fabric.
Hunk is an agent for Umbrella and later a mercenary. He's from the original RE 2 and remake in an extra mode called the 4th survivor where he fights through the RPD to escape with the G virus. He's popular for being a cold and calculating soldier whose sole focus is the mission.

This is the Mercenaries game mode from Resident Evil 4, where you can choose a character and location. The location itself is an isolated Spanish village. There is no time travel here.
