How to make British history sound elegant and eloquent while also not glossing over any of the problematic bits: an excellent example.
i c o n i c
😆
"Not glossing over any of the problematic bits" Really? They were entirely glossed over. I'm not sure how else the video could be made unless they were glossed over.
@@Avril. I understand what you mean, perhaps 'without pretending there are no problematic bits' would be a better wording in this context - still very much a rare sight!
Being English, I apologise for this horrendous mess and can assure you that I have never had the urge to invade anyone.
Never apologise for things done before we were born.
Why do you say English instead of British?
I want to assume that you mean from England. Help.
@@state924 Yes I am from England 😂 I said English over British because it was the English that did the invading. To be honest though I prefer to say I'm English rather than British anyway, even though both apply to me.
@Sophie Poyser - All right, I think I’ve got it.
I’m descended from the Puritans, but the only thing pure about me is my heart.
I laughed so hard at your comment, it is so true! 😁
Questions I have been asked:
Is England near Manchester?
Which city is Scotland?
Where is the UK? (in relation to England).
Is England in London?
* Sigh
Forgot to mention that the reason for the famine was because the UK forced Ireland to export all of its valuable foods to the UK excluding potatoes which were the staple of the Irish diet, and there was a potato blight, and despite this the UK continued to force Ireland to export their other foods..
Actually Irish lords did the same. Most lived in England at the time. But it really was a case of the rich parasitising the poor to death. Compost the rich.
@@FaultAndDakranon The Irish Lords kept their titles through loyalty to England. However, I had heard that Quaker landowners tended to have less of a death toll.
Also, they were only able to export the food so fast because of the canals that british had built through Ireland
@@blueconnolly3394 Quaker are always big on taking evidence of human suffering, and using it to lessen that suffering. Basically they are the people who were so pissed off that the Protestants had gotten as corrupt and ungodly arms the Catholic church they split from, they redesigned their religion from the ground up to keep the focus on service, generosity and generally doing good in the world
Many in Ireland who know about the history prefer to call it the Great Hunger rather than the famine , because the word famine suggests as a blameless tragedy, whereas clearly the English are largely to blame for the extent of the disaster
@@smileyface702 I know plenty of ppl who know about it, in ireland, and i have never heard any of us call it "the great hunger" I have heard it called genocide since it was the wilful starving to death of a populous.
Some may call it the great hunger but i have never heard anyone here call it that (I'm Irish btw)
Jessica is the History teacher we all wanted.
Jessica.
If a LGBTQ+ History class is an elective that I can take in college, and Jessica is the teacher, I would love to be in her class. She made it educational and fun. 🙂
Fun fact, the Irish government doesn't recognise/use the term British Isles. They instead use Ireland and Britain. My personal favourite alternative is Atlantic Archipelago
I enjoy calling them the Irish isles
The wikipedia page for it is in a constant editing war
But the Hebrides are closer to Denmark islands?
Especially since "the britans" never got to Ireland. "The Celtic Isles" would make more sense since they lived in all of them at one point
Our (very, very Kenyan) Geography teacher in high school used Atlantic Archipelago and we didn't realize he was throwing shade at England until much, much later.
I'm Welsh and would like to thank you for acknowledging England having a history of being slightly awful to the non-English
England behaved the same to the English (well those of us who didn't have land... or money... or who had an opinion)
Haha, I love how you tell people to find an Irish person to ask about Ireland and the North! I'm from the Republic and am aways curious how people will address it in videos like this. 😂 Nice one.
I felt so seen when she said “are you Dutch?” Cause yes I love the confusion when I explain to people the difference between Holland, the Netherlands and the kingdom of the Netherlands (which includes a couple more countries with different relationships with the Netherlands cause history)
I know! And then the difference between south and north holland!
No one:
The Serbian language: The Netherlands = Holandija
& Denmark. Because of the Dutch/Danish languages & all that.
Hehe I was going to talk about Holland! Some of our counties are named after the capital city, not confusing at all: I live in city Utrecht, which is in county Utrecht. It is also in the region Utrecht on top of the Utrecht hills.
For anyone wondering: the Netherlands is the country, Holland are the two most western provinces (North Holland and South Holland), where our capitol and parliament are (fun fact, the Dutch parliament is not housed in our capitol Amsterdam). It's the most densely populated part of the country and the bit most tourists visit, but definitely not the whole country.
"hills"
Thanks guys for explaining it! I live in Poland, here we call your whole country 'Holandia' and there is no general knowledge about its origins.
I actually think it is actually similar to how England is used interchangeably with the UK even though not technically correct. Both England & Holland are the most populous & richest ( and thus most powerful ) regions that helped consolidate ( dominate ) the rest into a bigger union.
The region of France I live in is called "Ile de France" or island of France despite not being an island and being very much in the middle of the country ! It's the region Paris is in
78 rpz 😆😉
I live in Australia, and this has been released right as I head to bed to try to get a good night's sleep before a big presentation. Thank you for keeping me calm and cheerful 😊
Same here my dude, who needs sleep anyway
I live in Queensland and it's only 9:52 pm here.
To you both, a very good night and presentation on the morn. Big heart from Thornbury Vic.
@@keldakellie9164 i love going to thornbury! Good luck everyone!
Good luch on your presentation
I live in the US and I really enjoyed this video because like most Americans, I could never understand the difference between GB and UK. I can't say I understand it but I don't think I've ever watched a RUclips video so intensely to try and understand! I really enjoyed it though. Even if my brain hurts just a little...🤔🤯
Same. I'm still not sure what the difference is, but I'll keep calling the people over there UK folks until a better term comes along. 🤷♀️
Last time I was this early, my joints hadn't started dislocating yet.
Hope you're feeling better now, Jess! Migraines suck 🔪😭
As an Irish woman, thank you! This explains it brilliantly- especially the British Isles bit. And without any condescension
I second this motion as a Scottish lass 😁
“Except to people who love the British Empire”
Why we are so confusing *cough* religion *cough* thanks for making me laugh Jessica I needed that ❤ also I am a massive history nerd so thank you for making this 😂❤
I always wondered what the difference was! This literally needs to be shown in history classes, especially in the US!
I live in Nova Scotia ("New Scotland") which has a whole rabbit hole of naming history rooted in colonialism (see: Expulsion of the Acadians), and of course it has names that the indigenous peoples referred to it with (and its surrounding areas) long before Europeans came and messed everything up. Our tiny neighbor Prince Edward Island was once known as Ile Saint-Jean by the French, and then "Saint John's Island" by the British when they unnecessarily translated it into English upon their occupation of it. Nova Scotia is a part of "The Maritimes" which is comprised of Nova Scotia, New Brusnwick, and Prince Edward Island, and is a distinct entity from the "Atlantic Canadian Provinces," which are comprised of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland. Swinging back a little - Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI, and part of modern Maine were all once the French-descended colony of Acadia.
Fascinating stuff. I'm going to have to go and try figure out the whole Acadians thing though as I'm aware it's part of the French colonists and they also have parts in Louisiana. What happened to the people native to the area? What were they originally called?
Gosh that "are you Dutch?" at the end there really caught me off guard. Yes, yes I am.
My province Saskatchewan is named after the "swiftly flowing river". My city is named after the berries found along the river, Saskatoon. Both anglicized from the Cree peoples.
Please make a history podcast. I could listen to you talk all day. That and the *sass* I love it
Yes, yes! A history podcast or RUclips series
I live in the Isle of Man but have moved to England for university. Even though I'm a british citizen and have home status for undergraduate, i am international at most universities for postgraduate. I'm not crying.
what? now this whole political/geographical terminology, however confusing, i can understand, but this??? especially with the cost of postgraduate studies (already pricey in general, but specifically high for international students)... can you at least pass for an EU national rather than international (just theoretically, because, well, brexit)?
@@navigating-the-void yeah the whole situation is mad, i've tried speaking to the uni and they all say its the first time they've heard of the situation. And no the isle of man is not actually part of the EU and therefore sadly no
As an Irish person, especially one living in England, I very much appreciate this video. There needs a to be a specific word for the tragically few English people who are 'woke' to the history of English oppression against Ireland, Wales etc.
I would however edit it to mention Cornwall, seen as a separate country until the early 16th centrury, with an ongoing if reduced indigineous language and cultural identity.
I'm married to an Englishman who originally identified as 'British', but now that he's aware of the history he's come to feel that the word is really quite an unpleasant invention used by particular English people to justify the cultural genocide of the Celtic nations and so he just classifies himself as English. I'd be interested to hear your take on this.
Also, I lived in the Netherlands, the country, in the westerly province of Zuid Holland, just below Noord Holland :)
Really? Like, this video would be news to a lot of English people?
@@hopegold883 It's not news to me but then again I am Cornish
OMG, the bit about Clara at the end, and your face. I died. I am dead. RIP me.
"one of these things is not like the other" I see what you did there, Jessica!🌈🌈🌈
11:37 Since I am Dutch, I think I can help you.
The whole country is called The Netherlands. The name Holland refers to the two westernmost provinces, known in Dutch as Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland. I hope this answers your question.
Scotland is 'up there' and Wales is 'over there'🙂
I'm Dutch and whenever someone asks me what the difference between Holland and the Netherlands is I refer to a video CGP Grey made a few years ago. Saying "Holland" instead of "the Netherlands" is like saying "Dakota" instead of "USA", with as a big difference that in North- and South Holland most of the major cities and industry of the Netherlands are happening.
and then there are whole countries, like mine, that just translate the Netherlands as Holland anyway
@@batfamiliar which country is that?
@@TheMarjolein96 well, I live in Poland, and the Netherlands is called Holandia here, but quick translate googling tells me, something similar is also the case in Turkey, Greece, Slovakia and Hungary
Thx!
@@batfamiliar Same in Serbian
As a Midlander I am offended that Clara confused us with the Welsh. Although, we do share an affinity for sheep #Derby
I really appreciate that Jessica makes the information on her videos easily digestible.
As a history major, this was actually pretty accurate and as thorough as a 12 minute video can be. Lol love your videos and I can't wait to see more ❤
Northern Irish here - you did a great job!
It's a confusing set up but it does baffle me when (usually English) people don't know the borders of their own country. My sister had an English friend ask her: "So, do we own you or the other part?" And then I've had English people be convinced that Dublin is the capital of NI and thinking NI uses euros or Ireland uses sterling.
(... this was before Brexit though so I imagine general awareness of NI and the border has increased a smidge)
Irish here, I honestly doubt its gone up. at least from the tourists I've overheard/talked to.
My uncle is English and when he married my aunt we had to teach him all the things in this video pulse the other hundred reasons for Irish resentment because he wasn't taught it in England. He's an intelligent man, it just didn't come up.
@@blueconnolly3394 Yeah I guess I was being optimistic.
It is wild though that this specific ignorance just seems to cut across all levels of society and education. Like I've met English students studying in Oxbridge who don't even have the most basic knowledge of NI and Ireland.
@@helenb9909 and then they get really surprised that generally, Irish people have a low level anger towards England or they think its for no reason or jealously and its like, no no, both NI and RI have legitimate grievances with England
@@blueconnolly3394 Haha yeah, definitely experienced that one too!
While at university in England I was once asked if I could drive home to NI for the holidays and I had absolutely no idea how to respond to that level of knowledge
Love you're historically informative videos and the eloquent way you handle them without glossing over the less flattering bits.
I appreciate the way you're able to take a convoluted subject and express it in a succinct and eloquent way😊
This was so informative and suprisingly easy to understand, and I thoroughly enjoyed it!! 😊
i live on the isle of man and the amount of people who dont know where it is or wont deliver here is huge. loving this series and the fact the iom got a shout out! xx
I genuinely thought when I was younger that Isle of Man was a made-up place for literary use, like using 555- for phone numbers on TV shows. It's weird to think some real place in the world has such a generic name. (Clearly, American history classes suck.) : /
I didn't think I needed this video until I watched it. thanks for enlightening me about the different islands!
All I want for Christmas is for companies to stop using the term "UK mainland". There's no such thing! Might as well say they deliver to Narnia.
Lol, Narnia, wonder if they can get a letter delivered quicker than "3-5 working days"
What should they say instead?
it's the country made up of countries bit that always makes my head hurt
Thank you! This was fun!
Glad that you're feeling better!
History is so fascinating. It's amazing how which authors you read shape your views (sorry, not really totally on topic!!) Thanks for your explanation 😊
Thanks for making this! I've explained it to my mother so. many. times. But this was the first time she actually got it!
I really love this editing style. It fun to hear her lizzie McGuire like commentary
I already knew this but had to watch your awesome video for all the joy
While I already knew most of this (especially the Irish bit from a college course), it was still very much worth watching this video for your unique form of history telling. Stay amazing, Jessica and hope your migraine has subsided for a bit!
Thank you ❤️
Thanks again for yet a lovely and educational video! 💖As someone from Sweden I love learning about different countries history. ✨
I'm with Clara, looking forward to learning more😉
Just getting all caught up on your vlogmas. Absolutely obsessed! 🎄❄️ You are so elegant and your wife is absolutely lovely! I'm so fascinated by other countries nobody better to learn from then you Jessica❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for the history lesson by the way. happy holidays jessica.
Yay! Do maritime boundaries next (cos they're an absolute mess and I may need a refresher if I were to sail again).
this was absolutely fab!!!!
I love you. I live in Nova Scotia. We have a delightful mix of First Nations and Gaelic place name.
Anyone else wish they had Jessica as their history/geography teacher in school? :)
Thank you for the education, Jessica. My head is still spinning. Going to watch this video again, and again, to fully grasp all that information ;)
Lovely as always 👍🤟💝
I was honestly worried clicking on this as an Irish person but honestly you are spot on at describing everything and thank you for acknowledging the resistance to using the term British isles by Irish people
Jessica, thank you so much for the history of the British Isles and. Great Britain. Here across the pond, at least when I was in school, the information about the area you live and the surroundings was a bit jumbled up. I can now understand very clearly.Thank you again for including this video in Vlogmas 2019 .😃🎄🎄🎄
I would like to hear you do a video of the history of Scotland and the fight for independence from the start, because your so unbiased and because it’s obviously coming back up
Thank you, Jessica.I finally understand what Great Britain and the United Kingdom are all about. You made it all so much fun👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Amaxing. Learned more here than years of school! Given I live in Australia however....
what an amaxing experience 😛
Complete perfection!!!
Can you do the commonwealth next?!?!
Thanks for remembering Jersey! And of course the island is close to France, it is part of the Duchy of Normandy, and along with the Duke of Normandy it invaded and conquered England! The Queen was still referred to as our Duke when she used to visit.
I love your history talks!
As a history major focusing primarily in pre-modern Europe, this video made me truly happy🥰
As an Irish person, it was really refreshing to hear an English person so well-versed in Irish history! Thank you for all your research and sharing it with us, I feel I learned a lot.
Love your videos so educational and love your humour
This is amazing! Thank you for this.
About the Netherlands: "Holland" used to be a province. In 1840, it was split up in the two current provinces North and South Holland. When one says "Holland", that actually refers to only two of the provinces.
I don't mind British Isles so much, since it apparently came from the "Britons/Brittonic people", who were a Celtic people and are now the Welsh, Cornish and Bretons. So, it's like our Isles are named after the Welsh and Cornish people's ancestors, which meh. There are worse things to be named after. At least it's not "the English Isles".
A strange practice here in the USA (United States of America) is referring to all of us as American, when all those born in North, Central or South America are American. Bizarre.
Yep, I try not to refer to the continent of "America" when talking to my Canadian friend about her home country. Not easy though.
A cup of tea and a lesson in history and geography.
You're a delight, Jessica. :) My ex actually put me onto your videos, and since being diagnosed with PoTS (as well we Crohn's disease, arthritis, and Ehlers-Danlos; which for me has also resulted in hearing loss in my left ear), your content, personality, and general awesomeness of your life with Claudia, Walter, Tilly, and the awesome anti-nausea tip that is Diet Coke (THANK YOU!!!) has made me feel much less alone. Thank you.
Can you two answer a question for me? Does the Diet Coke have to be caffeinated? I've been trying to stay away from caffeine, so I was wondering if the Caffine-Free version would work?
@@crisnemitz1606 I don't think so, no. I couldn't have caffeine for a fair while, and over here (in New Zealand; UK born, but moved here aged 9) you can buy Diet caffeine-free coke. :)
@@thepoppyvalentine Thank you for answering me. I'm a little confused. I'm sorry. Are you saying either kind will work? Or is caffeine necessary?
I'm from the north of Ireland (or "Northern Ireland" as the British empire has affectionately called the it), and I think you did a great job with this video. Lovely history teacher you are
This video is so well done and accurate
In the state of Louisiana in the United States, instead of Counties, we call localities Parishes. Also our legal system uses Common Law for criminal law, but Napoleonic Code for civil law since we were a French colony.
Wow thanks for talking about wales in a bit more depth. People usually gloss over it.
Nan told me about how when her mom was a kid or her grandmother. They had to wear signs saying they cant speak english, as a shame tactic to convert to speaking english. Dont know if it happened a lot in wales, but prevalent in our down the south area. It was something to do with work industry . Thats all i know really, we didnt learn any welsh history here if not religious .
This was so interesting. As a Spaniard I knew a little bit about the difference in naming but I still get confused. Great to know all thr little bit of history
It's 3am here and putting off going to bed because JESSICA!
Irelands population has never recovered it was 8 million people and now it's only around 5 and the english shipped off what little food the Irish had to feed them selves during the famine
Almost all right. The population quoted for Ireland before the famine is for the entire island of Ireland as there was no separation of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland at that time. Therefore you need to count the population of Northern Ireland into today's population comparison which brings you from 5M to about 6.7M.
@@Avril. still hasn't recovered
@@marieryankelly5517 I didn't despite that point. No it still hasn't recovered.
Hope you are feeling better, Jessica! I love all your videos, but I especially love the videos that teach us about your country’s history. 💜🏳️🌈
Please please please do a video on Holland vs. The Netherlands!
It's amazing that there were so many tiny countries on an island smaller than Saskatchewan. Like "I'm the King! The King of from here to (points at a rock 2 km away) over there!"
Being in Canada, the most controversial parts tend to rely on which tiny, largely unpopulated, parts of the country are owned by Canada or the United States of America, and the fact that we are still part of the British Empire... and yet not?
This is helpful. Thank you. My husband has tried to explain this to me but it has never been very clear to me. This was not taught to me well in history class in the US, or I was not listening, which may be more to the point.
Very informative. I'm of Welsh descent.
Love your videos,
Umphres
Thank you for explaining maam i deadass didnt get it
You should definitely get someone on to talk about Northern Ireland and the troubles! I’m from Northern Ireland and I find there is a lot of people who do not know our history and believe we are still apart of the Republic of Ireland and have little to no understand of the history.
CGP Grey has a video explaining the difference between Holland and the Netherlands.
I'm from Brazil.
We have a messed up political history, because the king and queen of Portugal actually moved here, so were a colony that housed the monarchy, and then we were an empire, and then a parlament, and then a republic, then a military dictatorship and then a republic again.
And that's in 200 years.
(Also my state tried to separate from the rest of the country because racism and diferences in colonialism, but they failed. Some people still think we should try again.)
Oh I live in dublin county which in Irish is dubh linn which means black pool
Finally a video to use when my friends ask me to explain that whole mess, even though I'm only technically British and my grasp on it all isn't the best.
there are also independent sates within England that can become independent if they wanted (a village/town in Sussex has its own currency, mayor etc. but doesn't use them and would only in the case of war or something else)
I'm irish and we have to learn the whole story when were like 12
They get us raging at injustice young. Tho they do leave out the worst part of the famine. aka, the lords exporting the good food
@@blueconnolly3394 I learnt about the food exporting when in primary school. It's taught thats its a potato blight that caused it and called the potato famine, one of the first things as kids we asked was why not eat something else?
I dont know if I could call it left out. I will conceed that when referring to the famine that the emphasis is on the death, immigration and combined the massive population drop of the time.
IT'S MY BIRTHDAY! And your video made it even better!!!
Happy birthday!
Thank you!
Happy Birthday 🎈🎈
Is there some sort of arrogance towards Scotland?
My grandmother said that I am British, Welsh, Irish, but definitely not Scottish.
She said that last bit as if Scotland is horrible.
What is that about?
(She is no longer alive and so I can’t ask her)
Maybe not quite as confusing a situation as yours, but as a Norwegian I do get to explain the relationship between Norway and it's neighbouring countries (and the terms Scandinavia and The Nordic) on some occasions. Especially fun when people think Scandinavia is one country, or that Norway is a part of Sweden...
Please do a video on dealing with diagnosis?...!
I love this hairstyle💖 Is there a tutorial on it??
Your hair looks so fluffy 😍
I went to the Vienna International School, which was formerly the English School, so I also had to learn the differences.
For many people it's very difficult to see through it, especially as it's United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest (funnily quite a few Northern Irish singers participated for Ireland), at the London Olympics there was a team Great Britain and in many sports England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Jersey and Guernsey have indivual national team.
I do know that in every British colony, a lot of chaos was left behind when indepence was achieved (because the people were hit by sticks every time).
I'm from Austria (the remain of the Austro-Hungarian Empire) and am sad that the UK is leaving the European Union. This could also mean the beginning of the end for the United Kingdom as I believe that Scotland and Northern Ireland will leave the UK within the next few years.
I am Dutch but was born in Scotland, which results in me googling all the time about how to fill in official forms and such when it comes to birthplace: should it be UK? GB?? Scotland??? Most frustrating is actually that I almost instantly forget, so by the next time a form comes around I will have to look it up again. I envy my siblings who can just say "The Netherlands" without any effort :') Luckily saying Holland or The Netherlands for me isn't an issue, because I actually live in one of the two Holland provinces, yay!
I'm from Cornwall and there has been a Cornish Nationalism movement that's been going on for some time now. The Cornish language has also gained support over recent years with over 5,000 people being able to speak fluent Cornish.
This video made me realize that i dont care what you're talking about, your voice just soothes my anxiety
Quite interesting and informative.
