I can't believe you skipped the part about their wife! The PUF met a couple and shortly after the husband died and the now widow moved in with the Friend, and started calling herself Mrs Friend. After the Mrs' death, she left custody of her young son to the friend.

Okay, so i haven’t actually fully watched this video, but thank you for talking about an early non-binary icon!! Of course we don’t know if the Friend did actually would have used “non-binary,” but as a non-binary person, hearing about this is awesome. Also, I love that you as a cis lesbian use your platform to promote these sorts of stories in a positive way while acknowledging that because of changes in language we don’t know for certain how to refer to historical figures

The thing is, we always put disclaimers like "we don't know if they would identify as non-binary/gay/transgender/bisexual, etc" but we never hear "we don't know if they identified as straight/heterosexual/cisgender". The notion of heterosexuality didn't exist either yet people don't seem to walk on eggshells around considering past figures as straight and cis.

    • @The1stPurpleCat

Ok, I was a very sheltered Christian kid (my dad has been a pastor my whole life), who didn't learn about LGBT+ until I was 11(?), and 7/10 of my friends came out as genderfluid/sapphic/nonbinary (or something else). Then I was told it was bad and a "mental illness" and all that stuff you'd expect them to tell me. I was too scared to disagree with my parents until I turned 16.
However, I remember learning a little bit about The Friend in like, 4th grade(?) because we were learning about why some religious groups separated from England as a lead up to the American Civil War. And I loved when I was told The Friend was a Christian, felt neither man nor woman, and used "Friend" as a pronoun, and wished I could get sick with a fever and become like The Friend and use "Friend" pronouns.
Now I'm a queer Christian who is genderfluid!
Friend/Friend's pronouns still sound so cool though.
Edit: Someone in a different comment talked about how Friend actually was friends with a couple at one point, but then the husband died, so then the wife changed her name to Mrs. Friend and lived with Universal Friend until her death. I remember going "Yeah, I think I'd do that if I had a close friend who's husband just died." Young me, I don't think that was what you think it was.

If both men and women were created in God's image, then I imagine God doesn't technically have a specific gender, so differing from traditional norms shouldn't be considered aberrant. I will never understand why it bothers some people so much.

    • @aroace7913
      @aroace7913 4 года назад +19

Because these norms are pretty heavily pressed on everybody with the typical stereotypes that come with it and getting than outside of these norms questions this ´´ normality ´´ and can make people confused and angry.
I compare to when I people ask me if I want a beer or some other alcoholic drink and when I say no people immeditaly say ´´ why ? ´´ and sometimes get really pushy because drinking is ´´ normalized ´´ so questioning it causes people to get defensive because refusing to this norm is seen as an attack to what is considered ´´ normal ´´.

I identify as transgender (ftm) and I am a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. And chances are pretty good that your religious source materials even support the concept of someone being transgender or otherwise not being simply the two binary cis genders as expected.
If you follow any judeo-christian religion then it does indeed support such once ya look at the religious text of the older of those religions like Judaism which establishes 8 potential genders, not two.

I'm an exmo myself, and that's very interesting to me. I would not have thought anyone could be trans and also mormon given what the church teaches about sexuality and gender. I left the church myself partly because of those issues, and I'm a cis lesbian. Not to pry, but are you accepted by other members? Most members of the church that I grew up with are not properly respectful towards trans people.

Actually had their land taken from them because they weren't "legally married" and had to write back over seas to have someone write over to vouche for their marriage to get their land back. Colonel John Pleasants is his name he's my 10th great grandfather. (Despite being a Quaker he did participate in the Civil War and was a POW) He lived in Ceres, VA. I know how much you love history.

We learned about small religious communities in early America in school and couple months ago, but I had no idea that this was how one of them started!!

my boo appreciates you making it a 'winter jumper' she is muslim and I am agnostic so Christmas is.... not a thing in our house. Also, you and Claud are our peer inspo's (I'm disabled with ED and chronic pain/ fatigue and she is 'able bodied' to most people but has balance issues) I wish that the world was more sympathetic to samesex disabled couples but every post you make has this ripple effect that makes it easier for us :D/

I've been waiting for this video!!! Just like all historical persons, we can only go on evidence and accounts and sadly will never have a definite answer. But people like this show these sorts of feelings and personal views and actions are very very old, something I feel some people struggle with understanding. That people today are not so different from the past, even if certain groups would like to make it seem as if all these 'new fangled words' are a modern creation. While a word may be new, what is behind the word never is.

JESSICA! Please do a video on Victoria Hall! ❤️❤️ American/English Spy in WWII, multiple missions into France, had a huge heart for the people. She was considered “The most dangerous of all Allied spies” by the gestapo. I fell in love with her reading the book A Woman of No Importance by Sonia Purnell

What an interesting person! I saw the Friend's story on Twitter last week and wanted to know more, so thank you for this profile. It's always hard determining if people would fall into our current understanding of different genders, but I admire the Friend's rejection of gendered pronouns and wish I could do the same in my life :)

I had never heard of the Public Universal Friend! I'm disappointed in myself for not knowing about them, both a person studying religion, gender and sexuality, and as a queer person from Rhode Island. Also in watching this video, when you called Cumberland a Baptist town (which at the time was true) I almost burst out laughing, because currently RI is very Catholic. Yet, RI also has a unique religious history, with the oldest synagogue in North America and the history of Roger Williams, the founder of RI, advocating for some form of religious freedom. I absolutely adore your historical profiles, they are funny and researched and nuanced 💖💖💖

Thank you Jessica. I had not heard of the Public Universal Friend prior to watching your video. I am grateful to you for presenting this in such an easy to understand manner. I always appreciate being educated on people and events in history I was previously unaware of. I found this quite fascinating, and rather timely considering our current social climate. Like you, I hope this sparks meaningful dialogue, a heightened awareness of history, and a better sense of who we are as human beings. This video was captivating, informative ... with a touch of the usual 'Jessica' flair and whimsy.
Again, thank you so much. Take care!!
    Lovely as always 👍🤟💝

I love these videos so much. I'm a Conservative Jew, and I'm also bisexual. Someday, I hope to get married to a Jew and have children. However, I always imagine that future with a man, because I don't know any non-straight adults who are religious! I hope that if I marry a woman, I won't be afraid to love her and also love my religion.

    Hello Jessica,
Yay! More history lessons. Nope, never heard of The Friend. Sounds like a lovely person. As you were talking, I was making points in my mind, but you addressed all of them. Too bad about the celibacy destroying the group. Just like the Shakers. Gotta keep bringing in new celibate ppl to stick around.
    Much love!
