Why do we cry? It’s weird. Humans leak water out of their faces when they get sad. Are we the only animals that do this? What does it mean? What is it for? Here’s the science of human tears!

I cry when I'm angry or frustrated... Way more than I do when I'm sad or happy. I always assumed it was a response to being overwhelmed with emotions. I also cry when I laugh a lot and have a hard time breathing. I cry a lot.
Lol me too, I've noticed that lately.
Sometimes I get so irritated at being ignored by my peers that I cry. I probably look pathetic but oh well.

Last time I cried was when I was 9 and our team lost 5-4 in a championship final (in football/soccer), still makes me mad till this day.

My eyes water when I yawn. What's up with that?!

They did say there are 3 types of tears. It's probably one of those.
-I think it could be a connected reflex response to the irritants of drowsiness. Like how yawning is a reflex of low oxygen levels in the brain.
But it could also be your eyes lubricating themselves in preparation for sleeping.
When we yawn our facial muscles apply pressure to our lacrimal glands making them spill out more tears than usual.

Me, it's when I laugh. Every fkin time I laugh, I start to have tears in my eyes. So I never really laugh because of that, I don't want to look strange...

Elephants do cry as an emotional response. I've seen documentaries of them crying after their friends had been killed for tasks.

We laugh, but imagine you really needed to belch or fart but didn't know how to control that. Heck, I sometimes STILL chug too much soda or eat too much chili and spend a few minutes with that awful, distended feeling, trying to get the gas out. It hurts!

The beginning of up is amazing storytelling in my opinion. I really like montages and how they can tell a story with no words and in a compressed amount of time.

But I've seen dogs and cows cry when they witness something heartbreaking.
Edit: I don't think any of us humans can understand how a non-human being is actually feeling.... And I think only members of that particular species that the creature belongs to can understand that. So we can't for sure say that we are the only animals that can cry. But I love how the comments have taught and will teach me some new stuff and I thank you all😇.

Today i was so bored that i saw an ant and i put sugar cubes in front of it. It ate some cubes, then it went to call its friends. So i cleaned all the leftover cubes so that the ant looked like a lier in front of his friends.

Thank you. Recently have read a book on emotions "How emotions are built : the Secret life of a brain ". Not about tears specifically, but definitely worth to check it out. Fresh look on emotions, that contradicts traditional approach to emotions. For instance, it says that hypothalamus is not responsible for emotional reaction, there is no single area of the brain that is responsible for emotions creation.

@Syed Rehan Ali Khan I've seen a dark line in bulls and cows under their eyes, it's due to tear flow. The reason maybe a response to the pain they get through or ageing.

Even as a 32 years old man, I wish I could cry my eyes out to relieve stress!
It takes time and feeling very safe to cry when you feel the urge but are out of practice, especially the "ugly crying" that really releases tension. Looking at photos/movies/letters that remind us of what we are upset about can be a good way to push past that feeling of being "choked up" but unable to let loose.

I think it's the overwhelmingness of the emotion.
If I get extremely angry (like once every few years - angry) I also get tears in my eyes. I hate it, because people think I'm sad when I'm not.

I thought that the chimp raised in California by a scientist that was taught some sign language, actually cried tears when she was told that her chimp buddy was dead. I don't remember anything more about this but it was probably 40 years ago that it was reported. It was extremely interesting to learn that emotional tears release other things like stress and pain reducers, also. Great video.

Yeah.
We are the MOST Social creature on planet Earth so it is necessary for us to have a LOT and I mean A LOT of expressions and emotions. If a human is feeling insecure then he needs to express his emotions to another human. If he feels socially ill or mentally ill then he needs consolling else his chances of survival in the social world decreases. You can't just scream or shout because it maybe an indication of just physical pain. So crying is a way to express ourselves. Its an evolutionary advantage. If a human in the stone age cries then it means he is feeling distraught. He is socially challenged. And his chances of survival is lessened.
notKARTHIK. If the distraught stone age man were truly socially challenged, then he would not have been able to pass the emotional crying trait. Instead, as discussed in this video, the more socially inept early humans were those that could not express the change emotions present in the vast majority of modern humans.
pokechatter being socially challenged isn't a final ultimatum, emotions and status's are always changing.
Moma wolf and daddy wolf were once apart of a different pack and they were not at the top, that didn't stop them from passing along their genes and creating their own family though.

Also, 'Exaflare Bahamut', they have 'crocodile tears' which is a fitting metaphor for fake crying since crocodiles only cry to get rid of excess salt while not necessarily being sad while doing it.
