Is There Really Such Thing As "Stress Free Singing"?
I see many vocal coaches (and their students) promoting the idea that "there should be no stress while singing" and therefore frustrating the heck out of singers who think there is "something wrong with themselves" because they can't, over night, achieve this "stress free" singing.
(this also gives a vocal coach "tribal knowledge" to keep you coming back to them as the only one who has the answer to this elusive concept)
This is nonsense and here's why:
Singing is like a sport. And with any sport, it's not the absence of stress, it's the management of stress that makes a great athlete.
    Think of it like this:
When Lionel Messi is going to goal, do you think his body is "stressed?"
(Anyone who says it isn't has never played a sport before).
But Lionel has learned the art of training his body and mind for that moment when it's time for him to step on the gas, take on 3 players and score what "looks" like an "effortless goal."
But you can be assured, it was not done "without effort" or without "stress."
Lionel achieved this through training his technical abilities as well as building stamina and muscle memory to achieve this consistency.
Now it is true that some styles of singing require less stamina than others and therefore can be accomplished with less strength training.
In other words, singing a light pop song requires very little "strength" in the sound whereas singing a heavy rock song often requires incredible strength and stamina.
This is also true for those (like myself) that want to push their "limits" and abilities to be all they can be. This of course requires more "effort" and technical training.
With that said, there are many stages to building this "stamina" and it's ok to "find yourself" as one first starts with "damaging street singing" (with total stress) and going through the different stages of learning how to manage this stress away from the voice through correct training.
If I didn't show the different stages of this process, and only showed "perfection", people would never learn that these people are all human, having to work on their craft just like yourself.

Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy Ken, could you comment a little on the changes to Chris's voice over the years? By the time he'd gotten to Audioslave, he was still superhuman compared to most, but compared to his glory days... he sounded like someone had set his voice on fire and put it out with a baseball bat. And then after Audioslave, SOMETHING shifted, because especially in the last few years, his voice has gotten crystal clear again. What do you think happened?

Regarding My How To Sing Like... Series:
People say "I want to sound like me and not anyone else."
And I say - Absolutely! No one should "clone" anyone.
But we all have influences, and it is the sum of those influences, and how we "re-present" them with our own style that makes us great.
Learning a difficult cover song where the bar is set high, is an excellent grading scale to see how well our technique is working.
This is also true for learning different styles as this increases our vocabulary for diverse singing and helps us find our own unique voice.
In my "How To Sing Like" videos, I still sound like Ken Tamplin, but seek to show you how to sing in their "style" safely.
Check Out One Of My Original Songs Featuring Some Of My Singing Influences (singing both soft and heavy) Here: How To Sing Like David Coverdale - Glenn Hughes - Lou Gramm - Paul Rodgers
When Choosing A Vocal Coach Or Singing Program, Make Sure The Coach Can Prove Their Technique With Their Own Voice & Their Students Voices Whether It's Cover Songs Or Originals.
The Proof Is In The Singing.

  • @kentamplin
    @kentamplin  11 лет назад +2

Yes my course specializes in building range. Most people want to "power" there way through the sound but that is exactly the opposite of what you want especially when singing heavy like this. If you are interested, you can check out the course under the singing lessons tab on the top of my KenTamplinVocalAcademy(dot)com page (I too started out as a guitarist who learned the art of singing. In fact instrumentalists do better with my course because they know what it takes to practice to achieve.

Yes, you don't see me breathing from the shoulders in fact I am dead against that (I teach this in my course). You see me taking a "quick hit" of air to fill up the lung and then I use my whole abdomen to support the sound. Notice how quickly my shoulders "drop" to a relaxed state immediately after taking the hit of oxygen. Also realize how much "air" is required in a song like this. A LOT. So short small "unnoticeable breaths" are not possible with this kind of advanced compression

The lessons are taught by me. I would recommend starting with my How To Sing Better Than Anyone Else course on my KenTamplinVocalAcademy(dot)com web site under the top tabe that says "singing lessons" as it will save you a lot in time and money. :-)

Yes but it's not something you do overnight. You need to understand and use open throat technique first, then hyper glottal compression and little by little add that grit to the voice and THEN always come back and clean up the sound to give freedom and resiliency back into the cords. It's one of the things I teach in my course.

Yessssss please! In my opinion is a very versatile singer with many resources so a deconstruction from someone with your knowledge would be awesome! The hard part would be to pick one (tool)song which sums up (more or less) his style. btw: your channel is awesome, I'm learning by myself and your videos are really helpful!

Dude. I have to check your series out. Every time I even try to open up and sing something from Cornell (Soungarden, AS, or even his solo stuff), my voice just goes really, really high. Like, Axl high. Or like Cornell of Jesus Christ Pose. I can't find that deeper, grittier side of my voice. Very impressed that you're able to consistently replicate the sound and styles of different singers. Great job.

"It's not the absence of stress but the proper management of it" Spot on. And to further your thought on air pressure management. If you push too hard while compressing not only do you dry the cord but imagine a flag in a really strong wind, it begins to fray and tatter, our cords do the same if we don't manage air flow when singing under compression. Great video.

Freakin amazing. Fortunately I'm a lead guitarist so any sound I want I can get without physical injury, lol. But seriously, watching your tutorials has improved my background vocal ability and given me more confidence to belt out a little more. Mad mad praises to your amazingly trained voice and incredible tutorials.

I have trained many background vocalists to go on to become lead vocalists. They never thought that would happen, but life happens, and next thing you know, things change and they get promoted!

how to sing like chris cornell
    step 1. buy helium
    step 2. inhale said helium
step 3. try to sing in as high of a pitch as humanly possible.

      @JamesCroisdale 10 лет назад

Watch the Cuba gig they did. From the opening vocal line even Chris is surprised how high the songs are. He buries his chin in his chest to hit the notes and it doesn't come back up til the end! The look of surprise on his face is hilarious!

Great, great, little cover at the start there. You've really got an awesome singing voice for one but instead of cloning Chris Cornell you've effectively given the style rather than doing something which is basically an impression. Awesome dude.

It is the way you compress your air. You are allowing too much air to pass across the cords and then squeezing the cords to distort them. I actually compress the air and then relax the cords enough to allow this kind of distortion

Ken has demonstrated more singing than rest of the youtube vocal coaches combined. Not to mention he fearlessly tackles so many different genres.
There needs to be some award for this achievement.
