Back in 2006, I bought a new Sportster 1200L. It has tubeless tires. I learned a long time ago to never get far from home on a bike with tube type tires. I was divorced, and my kids were grown. I was 47 years old, and had almost 4 months of vacation time saved up at my very secure job as a fleet mechanic for a large fleet department. I arranged to take it all. I put aftermarket slip ons on it, for that Harley sound, retuned the carburetor (2006 was the last year for a carbureted Harley) put a 24" high sissy bar on it, along with a couple of hard leather saddlebags using Easy Brackets, so they could be locked on, and removed with a key. I tied a bunch of stuff to the sissy bar, and also had a Cortech 14L magnetic tank bag. The '06 is a rubbermount model, but it still had a lot of vibration. It also has a 4.5 gallon gas tank, which gave me decent range. I did not use a windshield. I'd tried a couple of them when I was much younger, and they seemed to make wind buffeting worse, not better. They also tend to get covered with bugs very quickly, and instead of looking at what's ahead of you, you're looking at squashed bugs. I always wear a full face helmet. I took off from just southeast of Phoenix, AZ, and rode to San Ysidro, CA, then to Key West, FL, Madawaska, ME, Blaine, WA, then back home. That was about 10,000 miles. I took a 1 week break, serviced the bike, including new tires, and took off again. My goal was to cover all 48 lower states, including some time to look around a bit. I came back home twice more for around a week, then took off again. I wound up doing just over 26,000 miles in 4 months. I made all 48 states and D.C. I still have that bike. It has over 48,000 miles on it, and still runs like new. Who says Harleys aren't reliable? I retired a couple years ago, due to "political reasons". I just turned 65 a couple weeks ago. I'm going to keep riding that bike till the wheels fall off.
You can now fill up your vehicle with gas yourself in OR. I live in the AZ desert, and OR and WA were some of my favorite places to ride. Not anymore. I'm now afraid to even go there. Portland is now a complete ghetto. Astoria has to be the most beautiful place in the country. Been to Sturgis twice. My best advice, don't bother. At least not during the rally. The area is beautiful, but the rally is a nightmare.

Traveled farther and longer on my Sportster than most of the cruiser guys that I know. The secret is to take a break each hour or every 65miles or so. Had and drove the BIG Harleys, and sometimes hoped for the Batman fairing under the rain or cold, but at 52, the sportster will always have a place in my heart and garage.

So freaking rad! Exactly what I've been dreaming about since I bought my iron 883. Everyone keeps laughing about the fact I want to tour on this bike. So funny to me...what did people do way back when? You can do whatever you want, on whatever you want. May take more work and not be as comfortable...but isn't that the point? It's the reason I spend every summer backpacking with bare essentials as much as possible. Much respect brother!

    • @TylerRietz
      @TylerRietz  4 года назад +1

Thomas Knapp thank you man! You’re absolutely right. The pain and struggle of doing with what you have is the fun part about it all. I ride because I enjoy it and the freedom it offers.
I wasn’t about to let not have enough money or a bigger big stop me from my dreams of a ride to the west coast. I recommend taking a trip like this to any adventure. Just being some tools and extra oil when you go out there. Sportys like to vibrate and lose screws

I really enjoyed your documentary for several reasons. I was curious about the 883 and if it could do the job and it did even though your starter went out - all bikes have needs form time to time. The idea of a simple machine that one can maintain is good for most of us if we don't mind the wrenches. Your choice of music was great and I wondered if this was just a phone vid or you used something else. Nice setups and segue like planning ahead, setting up the cam and starting to ride off. You knew in your head how you wanted it to look and it was well done. I've had my street license for over 50 years and although a professional musician I worked for Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki and BMW motorcycles. My last tour was on a 97 1100 rt and I've spent many days riding solo across the desert and out to the beaches in CA when I was living in Vegas. Cycling is my Zen and it's always great to see fellow riders with the free spirit you have. Only thing is you have far more nerve than I do when it comes to camping out in bear country. Thanks for the great experience!

So cool! Love it. Reminds me of camping alone with my new Jeep Wrangler after going through Death Valley in CA. My coke cans started exploding from the heat. So I wrapped the couple of beer bottles in a towel in case they were going to do the same. Then I Camped at Trail of a 100 Giants and heard the guys next to me discussing their time in prison!
The beer was as hot as tea when I unwrapped it.
    I love the adventure!

    Hey Tyler
I absolutely enjoyed this video. So many just show 90% riding but you managed to show so much more with your short clips of camping and attractions. Superb…..
When you are young and naive, you just go for it. My first trip way back in early 80s was with my young wife on 2 Honda 400 customs. All the way to the Black Hills on 2 bikes with a range of about 75 miles. We musta looked the fool but we didn’t realize it and still remember that enjoyable adventure almost 40 years later.
Now my grandson has just bought himself an 883 Sportster.
I like others admire a young fella doing what you did, but for some reason, it does seem like it’s from the past.
    Weird.
    I’m getting old I guess.
    But still am riding.
    Thanks for the great video

I did sturgis and back from my place in PA on my 04 1200 sportster. About 3600 miles. No windshield and no helmet mostly. That was an easy ride compared to yours. Those solid mounted motors are hell to ride for long distances.
    Well done. Mad respect.

When you're ready ( if ever ) a small Milwaukee 8 107 on a shoestring budget Softail ( 2018 or later, when you can afford it ) is a motor that is counterbalanced, it doesn't vibrate or shake much.... and the screws, nuts and bolts don't fall out of it. It has a 6 speed gearbox, so the motor really loafs on the rpms, doesn't scream on highways or interstate. The suspension is pretty decent, you can get 4.5" of travel in the rear shock on some softail models, and the inverted showa fork up front is, I believe 5" of travel, or thereabouts. Think about it, when you're comfortable and further down the road in life. Yeah, an 883 is a sweet bike, easy to work on. Think of it as something to work towards, when the time is right in your life. The comfort is worth it. Came out of a Denny's restaurant on I-5 north of Los Angeles one day, and two young college kids were on a cross country trip in the summer on their bikes.... one of them on a Royal Enfield 650 Interceptor. His rear tire was bald, there were a few nylon threads showing just barely in the center, where tread should be. Rain was coming that day.... he worked for an electrical contractor, but work was a little slow that week. I handed him a $100 bill, just as you were handed a 50, and told him I hope that gets you at least half way there to getting a new rear tire. This was in 2019. Always gotta pay it forward!
