The worst thing that could happen is they say no. These hotels (especially if they are big corporations) can afford to give some guests an upgrade. If you have the confidence to ask or put out there you would like to be upgraded for free then do it.

Ive worked in a hotel chain doing everything from reception, to cooking to cleaning.
Free upgrades are standard for 'normal' guests.
Why give an old room if you can offer a new one... If it isn't rented out on the day if arrival, just gift it.

First of all Austin is a man after my own heart. Cuz you got to get the the membership points with these hotels and then I go through booking so I get points with them and then they also give me like rebate points with those extensions that you use (but maybe we shouldn't be using those anymore I don't know lol). But yeah you got to work the refs a little if anything you're making their day more interesting 😂
